A little bit of history about the Chatham Chamber of Commerce & Merchants Association THE CHATHAM CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

CHATHAM MERCHANTS ASSOCIATION

Incorporated in 1942, as a successor to the Chatham Board of Trade, the Chatham Chamber of Commerce, with its nearly 400 members, is dedicated to blending the interests of the business community with those of town government as well as Chatham’s residents and many seasonal visitors. We are especially proud of Chatham, with its wonderful heritage and its natural beauty, and our members, each of whom continually strives to keep and preserve what we are blessed to have here.

The Chatham Merchants Association is a branch of the Chatham Chamber of Commerce. It is made up of an active group of retailers and other business managers who direct certain special events and programs in Chatham. Among the many CMA events are the Art in the Park, Pumpkin People in the Park, Oktoberfest and December’s Christmas by the Sea Stroll. chathaminfo.com

all about chatham PHOTO COURTESY OF BET T Y WILEY

One of Cape Cod’s oldest townships, Chatham was settled in 1656 by William and Anne Busby Nickerson. Incorporated in 1712, Chatham now has approximately 6,200 residents, according to the town census list.

SELECT BOARD

Originally a farming community, Chatham’s inhabitants found deep sea fishing to be a more lucrative occupation. Today, small boat deep sea fishing and shellfishing continue as important maritime industries.

Jeffrey Dykens

Chatham covers an area of approximately 17 square miles and is a happy combination of past and present. You will find Chatham to be an old-fashioned and picturesque New England seaside village, yet offering the best in modern facilities. Surrounded by water on three sides, Chatham benefits from Mother Nature’s “natural air conditioning” with cool summers, exquisite autumns, and mild winters. It is a comfortable place in which to live year-round or visit on vacation. Chatham operates under the town meeting form of government. The executive officers are a board of five part-time Selectmen and a Town Manager. The citizens of Chatham enjoy the special benefits of forward-looking zoning and planning, and both public and private conservation efforts.

weather SUMMER: Chatham lies at the “elbow”

of the Cape — at latitude 41.40 North and longitude 69.58 West. We are fortunate in having navigable waters on three sides, and, as a result, the average summer temperature is close to 70 degrees. We do have fogs but they’re rarely cold in summer. They are a boon to our gardens and usually yield to the sun by noon. Chatham fogs are just one more “conversation piece.”

AUTUMN & INDIAN SUMMER: This

is one of our finest seasons, growing more popular each year. The water is never bluer than in October, the air is bracing and dry, the scenery at its best with the sharpest colors of the year. Swimming in September or early October is not too cold for hardy folk. Indian Summer lingers through September, October, and well into November — a

succession of glorious days and cool evenings. It’s an uncrowded time for tennis and golf, bicycling and hiking, beach exploring, sailing and fishing. It’s all part of Chatham’s Indian Summer. Come savor it with us!

WINTER: Our average winter temperature is about ten degrees warmer than on the mainland. We do get an occasional fall of snow which doesn’t last.

SPRING: March to May is our spring, when

we expect the thermometer to read in the upper thirties to low fifties most of the time. But when June comes, it “Busts Out All Over.” The waters of Pleasant Bay sparkle, and soon our famous roses and early flowers are in bloom everywhere.

90TH ANNIV ERSA RY!

Chatham Band

The “World-Famous” Chatham Band is celebrating it’s 90th Birthday this year! Starting in the summer of 1932, this Cape Cod musical group has been playing summer Friday night concerts to the delight of hundreds of thousands of happy and enthusiastic townsfolk and tourists! It started with just 12 men playing a variety of instruments and has blossomed into an ensemble of more than 35 members of which fifty percent are now women! Concerts are every Friday night at 8 PM in beautiful Kate Gould Park on Main Street in downtown Chatham, starting on July 1st and ending on September 2nd. This traditional concert band plays everything from Sousa to Sondheim, Broadway to Ballroom and of course their most beloved weekly rendition of The Bunny Hop! This year, they’ll be playing lots of new scores including Highlights from Jurassic Park, Sweet Georgia Brown, and even a marvelous piece called Harlem Nocturne, played by one of their alto saxophone

24

soloists and Chatham resident Karl Fehrle who will celebrating his 101st birthday in July! They are scheduled to play at the Chatham Municipal Airport Open House on June 11th and Oktoberfest on October 22nd. And of course, the band will be playing in Chatham’s Independence Day parade on July 4th! Look for their newly updated website with all the details about one of Chatham’s most enjoyable and time-honored institutions at chathamband.com.

Historic Chatham Chatham is steeped in history and home to wonderful museums, hidden architectural gems, and the locations of significant Native American settlements.

Weekend is the primary collaborative effort among Chatham’s many nonprofit museums and organizations focused on history.

Historic Chatham is a cooperative effort among Chatham’s many museums and organizations focused on history, with a mission to heighten both residents’ and visitors’ appreciation of Chatham’s fascinating history and the vibrant organizations that celebrate it.

HISTORIC CHATHAM SMARTPHONE TOUR

The website historic-chatham.org provides contact information and website links for the following member organizations of Historic Chatham: • Atwood Museum • Marconi-RCA Wireless Museum • Chatham Railroad Museum • Chatham Lighthouse • Chatham Windmill • Caleb Nickerson House • Eldredge Public Library • Mayo House • Monomoy National Wildlife Refuge The website focuses on an appreciation of the charm and significance of our historic town, with tours and information about special events and celebrations of all kinds.

Also called eTourChatham, the Historic Chatham Smartphone Tour is a virtual tour guide that encourages you to get out and visit historic and scenic points of interest all around Chatham. Find your own way around to whichever locations interest you, or follow one of the predefined Tours that will take you on tours such as Chatham’s museums, all the points of interest around the Chatham Lighthouse area, Main Street historic buildings, or the Chatham Loop tour. Each location’s page provides a summary of its history or significance in the community. An audio track accompanies each description, enabling you to listen to the story about each site, rather than read it on a small screen. A map provides an overview of where all the Historic Chatham Smartphone tour locations are, and you can also put yourself on the map using the built-in GPS inside most smartphones. Go to eTourChatham.org to be connected to the Historic Chatham Smartphone Tour.

North Beach Island/Inlet

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW NORTH BEACH ISLAND/INLET Swim at your own risk North Beach Island does not have lifeguards or beach patrol. The beach is swim at your own risk. Please be aware of rip tides, surf conditions and dangerous currents. No swimming at the Cut The new inlet that divides North (Nauset) Beach and North River Beach Island is closed to swimming. The currents are severe and treacherous. No flotation devices are allowed. There is absolutely no swimming in the cut by mandatory order of the Chatham Board of Health, the Harbormaster and the Park & Recreation Commission. Please pay attention to all signage.

chathaminfo.com

Boaters/Kayakers The surf conditions and currents in the inlets are extremely dangerous. Anyone without local knowledge and experience should avoid using the inlets at all times. Small craft, sailing vessels, kayaks and boards of any kind should not use the inlets. They can be easily swept out to the ocean and into dangerous surf. Chatham Harbor The currents are also very strong in Chatham Harbor. Ocean waves break in the harbor. Please pay attention to the tides and the shifting shoals. Schedule boating activities according to the tides. All vessels should heed the “Rough Bar’ warning (quick flashing yellow light) at the Chatham Lighthouse Coast Guard Station. Careful operation and navigation is required by all mariners and swimmers.

The Chatham Anglers had a season defined by hot streaks followed by cold streaks followed by hot streaks, with the impact of the pandemic making for an uneven season punctuated by a constantly changing roster. Returning Manager Tom Holliday expects a bit more stability this year and another season of contending for the league’s championship. “How can I not be optimistic considering the talent we’ve assembled and my staff,” said Holliday, who has more than three decades of coaching at universities like Oklahoma State, North Carolina State, Auburn and Texas. “This is a great group of athletes and as long as we work hard and play up to our abilities, we’ll make Chatham proud.” Holliday will again be aided by former Major Leaguers Dennis Cook (pitching coach – 15 years in the Majors including two trips to the World Series) and Mickey Tettleton (hitting/catching – won three Silver Slugger awards during a 14-year career). Players like Alek Manoah (9-2 in his 2021 MLB debut season with Toronto), Spencer Torkelson (#1 in the 2020 MLB draft to Detroit), Kris Bryant, Evan Longoria, Matt Harvey, Mike Lowell, Andrew Miller, recent Hall of Fame inductee and Boston native Jeff Bagwell, and Thurman Munson highlight the more than 150 young men who played in Chatham before moving

seal watching Harbor and gray seals are the most common species in Chatham, and can often be seen resting or hauled-out on rock piles, ledges, sand bars, and jetties exposed during low tide around the Chatham shoals from the North Beach breakthrough to South Beach and Monomoy. They’re also found resting on isolated beaches, in marshes, and on floating docks at all tide stages. The best time to see seals is within 2 hours of low tide on a sunny midday afternoon. Because seals cannot move well on land, during high tide they position themselves over submerged jetties. When the tide goes out they are left exposed, sitting on the jetty basking in the sun. If left undisturbed, they will stay on the rocks until the tide comes in again. If conditions are right, approximately 1,500 to 2,000 seals can be seen in the

is a constant source of interest to our summer visitors. The members of the fishing fleet make their run each suitable day to the fishing grounds from 3 to 100 miles off Chatham. Their catch consists of haddock, cod, flounder, lobster, pollack, dogfish and halibut. The fresh fish is placed in ice and transported in refrigerated trucks to the New York, Boston, New Bedford, and local markets, arriving less than 24 hours from the time it is taken from the ocean. The boats start returning to the pier shortly after noon, depending upon the tide. You may watch from the visitors’ balcony — be sure to bring your camera. Please observe local traffic and parking regulations while at the Fish Pier. Parking in upper lot for visitors, lower lot by permit only. CCCHFA’s Pier Host Program: Learn about the maritime history of Chatham while having a fisherman show you the ropes at the Chatham Fish Pier. On select days, there will be a Pier Host available to tell visitors about an industry that is vital to the Cape’s past, present, and future. ELDREDGE PUBLIC LIBRARY

The Eldredge Public Library celebrated its 125th anniversary in 2021. The Library was built in the Renaissance/Romanesque Revival Style with a Quincy granite foundation, red West Barnstable brick walls, and the interior was finished with quartered oak wainscoting and a beautiful carved oak fireplace. Upon completion, Chatham native Marcellus Eldredge gifted the Library to the people of Chatham. Over 125 years later it continues to be a treasure on Main Street, housing a vibrant modern library that offers a wide range of services, resources, and programs for Chatham residents and visitors of all ages.

FISHERMAN’S MONUMENT

Several years ago, a community committee was formed to recognize the Chatham fishing industry in our town. It was decided to plan and erect a monument to this unique industry at the Chatham Fish Pier. From an international competition with about 100 entrants, the committee narrowed the selection to a final three, which were submitted to our fishing community for a final selection. The winning choice was designed by Sig Purwin — an artist and sculptor from Woods Hole —and dedicated in June 1992. The monument, entitled “The Provider,” features a strong hand pulling a fishing net from the sea with many fish and shellfish indigenous to Chatham caught in the net. Visit the monument at the Chatham Fish Pier. It shows our pride in the people of our fishing industry — the proud, independent providers to the world of the Atlantic’s best seafood!

PO IN S O H EA DTER HFERI N E T ER E S T MAYO HOUSE

The Josiah Mayo House located at 540 Main Street is an excellent example of life on Main Street in the 1800s. It was built between 1818 and 1820 by Josiah Mayo, a Blacksmith by trade, who was Postmaster in Chatham for 40 years, Treasurer for 27 years and Selectman for two years. The house was occupied by members of the family until 1938. In 1974 it was purchased by Cape Cod Five Cents Savings Bank, and two years later it became the property of the Chatham Conservation Foundation. The CCF has restored the house. ATWOOD MUSEUM

Owned and operated by the Chatham Historical Society, the Atwood Museum is located at 347 Stage Harbor Road. The original part of the museum is a house built in the 1750s by sea captain Joseph Atwood when he was a subject of George II of England. The house was occupied by the Atwood family until 1923, before the Historical Society acquired it in 1925. As such, it has remained unchanged since the time it was built. The house provides an excellent view into the way of life during the 18th and 19th centuries in New England. Over time, several wings have been added to the original structure, with the latest expansion constructed between 2003 and 2005. Today there are twelve spacious galleries featuring art, artifacts, maps, charts, and decorative arts portraying life on Cape Cod since the 17th century. The museum is displaying three new exhibits in 2022: Weird, Wacky & Wonderful: Curiosities from the Collection, The Clubs of Chatham: A Century of Summer Leisure, and Alice Stallknecht – American Regionalist: Beyond the Murals. Weird, Wacky, Wonderful, sponsored by Kemper Family Foundations, displays some

of the most fascinating objects that have come into the Chatham Historical Society’s collection over the last hundred years, many of which have never before been featured in our exhibits. We are thrilled to share them with our visitors in an ambitious and innovative new installation. Chatham is home to a multitude of summer clubs and institutions, many of which are about to or have recently celebrated their centennials. Our new exhibit, The Clubs of Chatham: A Century of Summer Leisure, highlights the histories, characters and activities of the organizations that been a part of the fabric of our community for so long. Examples of featured clubs include: Eastward Ho!, Chatham Yacht Club, Stage Harbor Yacht Club, Chatham Beach and Tennis Club, Monomoy Yacht Club, and many more. While our Mural Barn building houses many of the larger murals for which local artist Alice Stallknecht is famed (more on Alice Stallknecht later), she has a varied portfolio full of beautiful and whimsical works that are much lesserknown. Our exhibit about Alice, her life in Chatham, her family, her influences, and her work educates visitors about one of Chatham’s most fascinating residents. Returning in 2022 is Double-Take: Historical & Current Panoramic Photographs of Chatham which features images of various locations and landscapes taken in the early 1900s and pairs them with photographs of the same places today. Visitors can view vistas like the iconic Twin Lights of the past next to the current single lighthouse; Stage Harbor then and now; Mill Pond and more. The exhibit was created and sponsored by former Atwood archivist Jean Young and her husband, photographer Andrew Young. Back by popular demand is The Rescue of the Pendleton, which highlights the crew of the famed CG 36500 in their daring rescue on February 18, 1952. Another gallery is devoted

CALEB NICKERSON HOMESTEAD

One highlight of the museum is the Mural Barn that houses the nationally renowned portraits of 130 townspeople painted by Alice Stallknecht between 1932 – 1945, which captures the life and struggles of local residents during that period.

Tour the Caleb Nickerson Homestead, a c.1829 Cape, and see the reproduction postand-beam outhouse. Walk the grounds of this historic landmark where Chatham’s first English settlers, William and Anne (Busby) Nickerson, purchased the land from the Monomoyick natives in 1664. Stroll the short path out back to the archaeology dig on the premises, then view the archaeology artifact exhibit to see what was unearthed in 2017. Be sure to also see the historic plaques by the driveway.

On the grounds is the Nickerson North Beach Camp built in 1947 which was moved, with all of the contents intact, to save it from being washed into the sea as the beach eroded; and the working lighthouse lantern of one of Chatham’s former twin lights, with its original Fresnel lens. Visitors can also explore a recreated Wetu—a traditional Wampanoag dwelling located on the grounds. Hundreds of interesting antiques are displayed throughout the museum, providing something for all art lovers, history buffs, students and friends of Chatham and Cape Cod, regardless of age. Reservations for 90-minute visits can be made through our website. Don’t forget to visit our gift shop, which is stocked with items and books relating to the museums’ collections. As stewards of the region’s history and culture, the Chatham Historical Society strives to educate, inform and enlighten the public and bring enthusiasm to the Cape Cod community. The Atwood Museum exhibits are open from May to October with special festive happenings during the holidays. The research library and special programs including a monthly lecture series are available year round. As listed in the National Register of Historical Places, this building is more than 100 years old and on its original site. It served the town for over fifty years from 1887 to 1937. In 1951, Mrs. Jacob Cox of Cleveland, Ohio, and Chatham purchased the structure and land as a gift to our town. It was restored as a “country depot” and a museum in 1960. Starting with relics of the first commercial railroad in the U.S. in 1826, the exhibits grow each year and include hundreds of items of historical significance in the railroad field, plus models and objects that never fail to interest the visitors. The fully restored 100-year old caboose, the gift of the New York Central System, is open for all to enjoy the sounds of the rails. Young and old will enjoy this “Home on Wheels” of the railroad train crews.

MARCONI-RCA WIRELESS MUSEUM The Marconi-RCA Wireless Museum of the Chatham Marconi Maritime Center is located at 847 Orleans Road (Route 28) across from Ryder’s Cove in North Chatham.

In 1914, radio pioneer Guglielmo Marconi’s company built a wireless receiving station here paired with a transmitting station in Marion, Massachusetts intended to provide commercial point-to-point radio service between the United States and Northern Europe. The campus of 10 original buildings on 11.3 acres has been preserved by the Town of Chatham as the Marconi-RCA National Register Historic District. Following World War One and with the intervention of the US government, Marconi’s American assets were acquired by the newly formed Radio Corporation of America. By 1922 - a century ago - RCA’s Chatham station with call sign WCC was in full operation, but now for maritime ship-to-shore service. It would soon become the largest US coastal station in the marine service.

Through informative panels, videos and interactive exhibits, visitors to the museum’s Wireless History gallery explore radio pioneer Guglielmo Marconi’s life and legacy, the role of maritime radio in world events, ship-to-shore communication with the actual shipboard radio from the hospital ship SS Hope, and artifacts from Chatham Radio WCC’s history. Visitors experience firsthand how a radio operator touching a Morse code key in Chatham could be heard by his counterparts aboard ships sailing the seven seas, and learn about the talented and skilled people who

55

PO IN S O H EA DTER HFERI N E T ER E S T conceived, built and operated the station. In addition to relaying commercial and personal messages to ships, WCC communicated with pioneer aviators including Charles Lindbergh, Amelia Earhart and Howard Hughes. From 1942 through 1945, Chatham Radio played a key role in defeating Germany during the World War II Battle of the Atlantic by intercepting Enigma-encrypted wireless messages between the Third Reich’s headquarters and its ships at sea. “Station C” (its wartime US Navy designation) forwarded these intercepts to Washington, D.C. for decoding. As the control station for the East Coast direction-finding network, Station C also directed the search for telltale radio signals that allowed enemy vessels to be located and tracked. The museum’s Navy Years exhibit features working electronic Enigma cipher machine simulators allowing visitors to try their hand at message encryption. The museum’s other gallery is truly “open space” and open year-round. This is the Antenna Field Trail, a winding path through the flora and fauna of Cape Cod with interpretive signs describing the station’s antennas, and offering views of the preserved 1914 station campus. Some of the antennas are scaled replicas of the originals, actively used by amateur radio operators to communicate around the world. The museum and its Museum Shop are open most days from Memorial Day until Columbus Day and on weekends during the Spring and Fall. Interpretive lectures and presentations provide context for the museum’s exhibits, and the Center offers engaging science, technology, engineering & mathematics (STEM) classes for youth year-round. For information on museum hours, programs and events, Summer Science classes for kids, and ticketing please visit ChathamMarconi.org or call 508-945-8889.

THE CHATHAM LABYRINTH

The Chatham Labyrinth, located in Chase Park just beyond the Grist Mill, provides a meditative walk in a peaceful space in the center of town. The large stone labyrinth, 44 feet in diameter, is a replica of the beautiful 12th century labyrinth inlaid on the floor of Chartres Cathedral in France. Made out of cut and sealed earthtoned pavers, the labyrinth is wheelchair accessible and a permanent legacy to the Town of Chatham. It is surrounded by green grass, scrub pines and native landscaping. Visitors are invited to walk the labyrinth or sit for a while in meditation or contemplation. The Chatham Labyrinth was given to the town by the Chatham Clergy Association in celebration and honor of its 300th Anniversary theme, “Find Your Way Here.” The labyrinth is thought to represent the life journey. The Labyrinth is open to the public during regular park hours. Guided Labyrinth Walks offered during July and August. If you are interested in knowing more about the labyrinth and any of The Chatham Labyrinth related events, please call Pilgrim’s Landing, 880 Main St., 508-945-1304 or visit pilgrimslandingcapecod.com chathamlabyrinth.com

FISHERMAN’S HERITAGE GALLERY

Filled with artifacts, authentic fishing gear, photographs, storytelling and even a short documentary, the Fisherman’s Heritage Gallery pays tribute to the heritage of Chatham’s fishing community while highlighting the contemporary issues facing today’s small-scale fisherman. All ages welcome. Open daily during regular Pilgrim’s Landing Hours. Please visit PilgrimsLandingCapeCod.com/ our-heritage for more information.

dining Recognized as home to one of Cape Cod’s most prolific fishing fleets, Chatham is well known for its fresh fish and seafood. While many restaurants feature the “catch of the day” and other local favorites, there is no lack of other fare, including Italian, French, Continental, Asian and, of course, good old traditional American. Dining in most establishments is casual; and while shoes and shirts are always required, the need for a jacket and tie is rare. Most

restaurants do not accept reservations in season, but they generally do honor major credit cards. On pages 76 and 78, you will find a list of dining establishments in the Chatham area. The information presented is designed to serve as a guide only; and while we have made every attempt to verify the facts, you should always check with the individual establishments regarding reservations and other details.

The delightful physical characteristics of Chatham, such as the beaches, marsh and wetlands, and meadows, have long been known to our residents and summer visitors. Preservation of these resources is a benefit to our economy, our fisheries, wildlife and flora, a fact now recognized to a greater extent in the past few years by federal, state and local authorities. Chatham is fortunate in having, in addition to the town Conservation Commission, a privately operated organization in the Chatham Conservation Foundation, Inc., (104 Crowell Road, Chatham, MA 02633), dedicated to the preservation of these valued areas. The Foundation, chartered in 1962, is in the hands of eighteen trustees, including officers and executive committee, all without salary. Call 508-945-4084 for information, Tuesday and Thursday from 9 am – 1 pm. Many gifts of wetlands and marshlands have been donated to this organization and others obtained by purchase. To date, more than 588 acres have been put into conservation by the Foundation so they may be enjoyed by our residents and visitors. A highlight of the Foundation’s work in the field of education is its publication A Beachcomber’s Botany, with illustrations by Marcia Gaylord Norman and text by Loren C. Petry. It is a valuable guide to the interesting plant life in the marshes, along the shore, and the upland. You will find a copy of the publication in the public libraries throughout Cape Cod.

MONOMOY NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE

Chatham is a mecca for bird enthusiasts. In autumn, Cape Cod is a veritable habitat for birds of numerous species. Its temperate climate attracts many birds through the winter when most have winged south. The summer months see the migration at its height. Chatham and Monomoy Island afford unexcelled opportunity to observe many species, both rare and common. Nearly every species recorded from New England has been seen at some time in this area. The Monomoy National Wildlife Refuge is a link in the chain of migratory waterfowl refuges along the Atlantic Flyway. Access is available by car, by a short boat trip from Chatham. Local boat charters are available. (See “Boats” p.83) The refuge provides nesting, feeding, and resting grounds for a known 285 species. This is one of the most famous and productive ornithological points on the Atlantic seaboard. Monomoy National Wildlife Refuge consists of North and South Monomoy Islands and a portion of Morris Island, Wikis Way. The nearly 3,000 acre refuge stretches approx. ten miles southward into the waters of Nantucket Sound and the Atlantic Ocean. Ninety-four percent of Monomoy’s acreage was designated a Wilderness Area in 1970, and is managed under the guidelines of the Wilderness Act of 1964. It is the only Wilderness area in southern New England.

N AT U R E T R A I L S & PA R K S To reach the headquarters on Morris Island, take Route 6 east to Route 137 south to Route 28. A left turn takes you through downtown Chatham (about 3 miles). Turn right at the stop sign to the Chatham Lighthouse and Coast Guard Station. Take the first left after the lighthouse, then the first right. Follow Morris Island Road to signs for the refuge on the left. Open Mon – Fri 8 am – 4 pm. For further information, call 508-945-0594. fws.gov/refuge/Monomoy Massachusetts Audubon Society’s Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary conducts guided natural history tours of Monomoy throughout the year.
