DIRECTOR’S LETTER 2022

MidCape Guide EDITOR Lisa Cavanaugh

Hello, New Friends and Old Maybe you have been coming to Yarmouth for decades, or this is your very first time visiting our town, but either way we think 2022 is a great time to Experience Something New! There is always something to discover and explore in our villages of South Yarmouth, West Yarmouth and Yarmouth Port. Whether you attend one of our concerts on the beach, stroll our many walking trails, uncover new fascinating facts at our museums and historical buildings, see an art exhibit or taste a new delicious delicacy at our dozens of restaurants, any time you come to Yarmouth, in every season, there is a new experience just waiting for you. It is so exciting to lead the Yarmouth Chamber of Commerce, where we work year round to support our local businesses and to enhance the quality of life for those who live and work here on Cape Cod. That excitement extends to helping share all the amazing possibilities here with visitors, since we believe that Yarmouth is truly “The Key to Your Cape Cod Experience.” So welcome to our town, and be sure to make 2022 the year that you experience something new in Yarmouth! EDITOR’S LETTER

HELLO AND WELCOME TO A NEW EDITION OF THE MIDCAPE GUIDE FOR 2022 ~

I am very excited to share with all of you – visitors, summer residents and year rounders alike – another collection of interesting features, guides and listings to help you enjoy the Town of Yarmouth to the fullest. As our theme this year states, Yarmouth is a town of trails, from historical sites, to recreational opportunities, entertainment, attractions, and wondrous shoreline discoveries. As a longtime beachcomber myself, I was so excited to chat with Gilbert Newton, an esteemed local marine educator and beach guide, to learn fascinating facts about the creatures and plants you can discover along our beautiful coastlines. I also was honored to spend some time getting to know more about the exciting Family Table Collaborative, a new nonprofit in town that has transformed the venerable Riverway Lobster House into a community gathering place for delicious food, local products and a chance to support nutrition services for Cape Cod’s vulnerable populations. You will also find some terrific ideas for following trails full of Family Fun, Hiking and Biking options, and the many locations and buildings across town that highlight centuries of Yarmouth history. I hope these pages add to your appreciation and enjoyment of our special Cape Cod town and that you will find new trails of your own here in Yarmouth!

Ryan’s South Yarmouth Historically known as Cape Bowl, the South Yarmouth Bowling and Game Room Center has been owned by Ryan Family Amusements since 1987. Open year-round, this family-focused business is located on Route 28 near the South Yarmouth Post Office and has plenty of parking. “We have eight candlepin lanes and twelve ten-pin lanes,” says Zack McCaul, Ryan Family Amusements operations manager, “and this year we are expanding our arcade, and adding axe throwing and corn hole areas.” McCaul explains that axe throwing has become very popular, and the South Yarmouth location will have laser projections, high-top table areas and touch-pad scoring for the 18-and-over activity. “The axe-throwing galleries are very interactive for players and spectators, and they are caged and continuously monitored by staff for safety.” The center has a full liquor license, refreshments including pizza, wings and other snacks and a Birthday Party Room. You can also participate in league and team bowling. “It is just a really fun place for the whole family to come have a good time,” says McCaul. “We are excited to keep evolving with our offerings and games, and bowling remains an enjoyable, nostalgic activity that is great for everyone.” 1067 Route 28, South Yarmouth, ryanfamily.com

Skull Island Adventure Golf and Sports World Skull Island Adventure Golf and Sports World: This activity center first opened as a miniature golf course in 1961 on ten acres of land on Route 28 in South Yarmouth. The traditional flat course with lollipop and windmill obstacles was augmented by batting cages and a driving range, and an arcade was added in the early 1980s. The facility was updated in 2001, and the resulting Swiss Family Robinson island-themed course, with its iconic giant white skull with lighted and steam-spewing eyes, features a beautifully landscaped and challenging course. Players golf past cascading waterfalls, over “alligator infested” waters, through a haunted treasure cave, and up into a Swiss Family Robinson Tree House. The adjoining Sports World center offers plenty of additional fun, with a driving range, go-karts, batting cages and a large arcade. The easy-to-reach property can also host birthday parties, family get-togethers and other group events for all ages. 934 Route 28, South Yarmouth, skullislandcapecod.com

Cape Cod Inflatable Park

INSET (LEF T ) BET T Y WILE Y

Since 2013, Yarmouth has been home to this incredible inflatable park, the largest in the U.S, and its accompanying water park, family resort, arcade and restaurant. The park is changing and expanding for the 2022 season, boasting 25 different slides, bounce houses, obstacle courses and interactive games and the new full-blown water park, named Wicked Waves Water Park, has added a wave pool, a toddler pool, a surfing simulator called a flow rider and an adults-only swim-up bar pool. Plans for the future include an elaborate water slide complex and family raft ride. “The water park is perfect for all ages,” says general manager Joe Marrama, “and the Inflatable Park is especially popular with younger kids.” The facility added a new retail gift shop and ice cream building this year. Marrama explains that a stay at the park’s nearby resort allows families to enjoy all the rides for two days per each one-night stay. “We are all about creating affordable and fun family memories.” 518 Main Street, West Yarmouth, capecodinflatablepark.com

Wild Animal Lagoon Originally known as Thunder Falls, this miniature golf center in West Yarmouth was refashioned as Wild Animal Lagoon in the early 2000s, and is now a family-owned business, complete with “gem stone mining” and an enormous faux gorilla named Lola. The locally based owners regularly update the artistically designed landscaping and add new “wild” animal statues each year. With their own five children serving as check-in and clean-up crews each summer, the atmosphere is family-friendly and lots of fun. Open from April through October for miniature golf, the location also sells freshly cut Christmas trees starting just before Thanksgiving each year.

Whydah Pirate Museum Open year-round, the Whydah Pirate Museum houses the largest collection of pirate artifacts recovered from a single shipwreck anywhere in the world. The Whydah Pirate Museum tells the story of the Whydah, a slave ship overtaken and turned into a pirate ship in the early 18th century, and then shipwrecked off the coast of Cape Cod in 1717. The exhibits combine artifacts of the slave trade and the pirate’s life, early maps of the Atlantic and Caribbean, and imagery of the 18thcentury world, as well as details about the wreck’s discovery in 1984, which utilized cutting-edge electronic remote-sensing technology, and the subsequent recovery and preservation of the ship’s artifacts. 674 Route 28, West Yarmouth, discoverpirates.com

YARMOUTH Trail of History Pre-1630s

1639

1640s

Town of Yarmouth first established.

Turtle Wetu

What is now known as Yarmouth had been home to tribes of the Wampanoag Nation for more than 10,000 years before the English settlers arrived. The Pawkunnawkut branch of the Wampanoag, believed to be several hundred strong, lived on both sides of Bass River. In the summer months they lived along the shores of the river, in cooler weather moving inland to the woods near Long Pond. There were freshwater ponds, woodlands and planting fields. Their dwellings, called “wetus,” were constructed of bent branches covered with a rush matting equipped with holes and doorways. The Historical Society of Old Yarmouth partnered with Marcus Hendricks, a native Wampanoag Nipmuc, to construct a replica Too’noopah (Turtle) wetu in the meadow near the Nature Trails and Kelley Chapel on Route 6A, which is open to the public to visit any time you are in the area.

Beach Combing WITH GILBERT NEWTON BY L ISA C AVA NAUGH PH OTOGR A PH Y BY BE T T Y W IL E Y

There is so much more to Yarmouth’s many splendid beaches than the perennial delights of sunning and swimming. We took a virtual walk with local marine educator Gilbert Newton to learn more about what discoveries await the curious beach explorer on the shores of the Bay and Sound.

30

MIDCAPE GUIDE 2022

A

s an avowed lover of seaweed, shells and crustaceans, Gilbert Newton believes that one of the best ways to enjoy the beaches of Yarmouth is to look down at the sand. “The beaches here have such a diversity of living things, it really is wonderful,” says Newton, who each summer leads groups of vacationers on marine science tours along the town’s Nantucket Sound beaches. “I love it when people come here and discover it for the first time.” The stroll along these sandy beaches and rock jetties is one of Newton’s favorite walks. “Each area has its own assemblage of plants and animals,” he says. “You can see interesting changes as you walk along.” One of the creatures that beachgoers will encounter here is the horseshoe crab. On the South Shore Drive beaches, horseshoe crabs are abundant, with both live specimens and the discarded molts in the late summer and early fall found strewn near the high-tide line. “It is one of the most unusual and unique animals you will find at the beach,” he says. “They predate dinosaurs and have remained relatively unchanged for 400 million years. They are amazing little critters.”

Not actually a crab, the horseshoe crab is an arthropod more closely related to spiders, and in addition to being an important part of the marine ecosystem, the animal offers benefits to humans in other ways. “Their unique blue blood prevents them from getting infections, and we actually use that blood to test pharmaceuticals for endotoxins. Horseshoe crabs have saved thousands of human lives.” “People can be frightened at first when they see them,” says Newton, “but they are harmless to us. They don’t bite, sting or poke, and they have great importance both ecologically and economically.” There are a lot of other fascinating livings things along the south-facing beaches of Yarmouth, including a great assortment of shells, razor clams, mussels and a variety of crabs. “In the summer you will see a lot of crabs in the water and in the intertidal zone, such as green crabs, spider crabs and a spotted specimen known as the lady crab,” says Newton. Terns and herring gulls love to dine on them, and the minute sand-burrowing mole crab is a favorite of sandpipers and plovers that peck at the ground in search of a meal.

attached to shellfish. It is somewhat of an invasive species that can block shellfish from feeding,” says Newton, “while sea lettuce (Ulva lactuca), is an edible green algae native to our waters.” There are also some beautiful red algae, such as chenille weed, and brown seaweed such as bladder wrack and rock weed, which are all abundant and beneficial. Rock weed, for example, attaches itself to jetties where it protects the small animals that live within its fronds. “Tiny anemones, sand hoppers and crabs, a whole little community lives under that seaweed,” says Newton. “Algae may seem to be a bit of nuisance at times,” says Newton, “but they are all truly important to the environment.” Finally, you may also come upon sea sponges on south-facing Yarmouth beaches. “There is a bright red one, the red beard sponge, which when it dies turns brown, that you can see occasionally at Smuggler’s Beach,” says Newton.

GILBER T NE W TON

Collectors of seashells will find a bonanza on Yarmouth beaches. Mottled-brown, shoe-like slipper snail shells are plentiful, as is the eye-catching shiny bivalve Anomia simplex, known as jingle shell. Its most common color is yellow, but sometimes you can find the more rare orange or grey jingle shell. “Beachgoers love to collect these,” says Newton, “as many people like to use them for hand-crafted jewelry.” You may also discover bright white and purple quahog shells and blue mussel shells, which are often found along the rock jetties that jut into the Sound. Eel grass beds will house sea scallops, and thus explorers may encounter both washed up on the wrack line of Nantucket Sound beaches. Newton’s favorite research subject is seaweed, and he explains that there are three general colors of seaweed on the local beaches in Yarmouth, green, red and brown. “Codium fragile, known as oyster thief seaweed is a stringy green variety that you often see

Many of these animal and plant species can also be found on the northern coastline of Yarmouth, at the popular Gray’s Beach on Cape Cod Bay in Yarmouth Port. “That is another one of my favorite spots,” says Newton. “It is such an intriguing environment, which includes woodland, a wonderful sand beach, mud flats and an extensive salt marsh system.” Specific to this coast are the tall marsh grasses, which protect the bay shore from erosion and storms. “The majority of the grass is made up of salt marsh hay, which harbors a lot of critters, including a huge population of ribbed mussels,” says Newton. “You can also find cord grass, which is an important plant. As it dies and decomposes it forms great mats, which float offshore and get eaten by fin fish.” At low tide the Bay’s mud flats are home to lots of crabs which in turn feed the gull and osprey populations. “There is a beautiful osprey platform to the west of the boardwalk there, says Newton, “where you can often see those magnificent birds building nests and feeding their young.” Overall, the beaches of South Yarmouth, West Yarmouth and Yarmouth Port provide a truly

wonderful experience for residents and visitors to relax, explore and learn more about the environment. “I think it helps to appreciate the ecology and biology of this amazing place,” says Newton. “We have wonderful natural resources here on Cape Cod, and it is one of the reasons we all live here and so many people come to visit. I love it when people can come with their families and friends, have fun and walk away with a better understanding of our unique shoreline environment.” You can find some of Gilbert Newton’s publications on the marine environment of Cape Cod at isaiahthomasbooks.com/products/author/ Gilbert Newton

Grab your walking shoes or jump on your bicycle because Yarmouth is the place to get moving—no matter your age, ability or time constraints! The Cape Cod Rail Trail is perhaps the best biking option on Cape Cod. The trail begins in Yarmouth and boasts a large parking lot off Station Avenue by the pedestrian bridge; there is also parking at Homer Park on Old Townhouse Road. Named for the former railroad line it follows, the trail is well paved and maintained, with multiple jumping-off points. Accessible to everyone, including people using adaptive bikes, wheelchairs and strollers, its mostly level route through the woods offers lots to enjoy.

Heading west from either parking lot, the trail winds along Old Townhouse Road to West Yarmouth Road and into the Bayberry Hills Golf Course through the woods, ending at Higgins Crowell Road. Heading east, you can travel all the way to Wellfleet through Dennis, Brewster, Orleans and Eastham.

The nearby Callery Darling Conservation Trails wander through the marshes of Yarmouth Port with amazing views of Cape Cod Bay. You can set out from Gray’s Beach behind the playground. There is also some street parking on Homers Dock Road and a small lot at the end of Alms House Road, with Barnstable’s Sandy Neck views. Walking through the marsh trails in spring and summer is often like walking through tunnels of shrubs in bloom as the branches reach overhead, competing with one another to be closest to the sun.

Around Sandy Pond, on Buck Island Road in West Yarmouth, you can find several easy walking paths. You can circle the entire pond, back to the large parking lot and recreation area, or connect to other trails that weave through thick forest to other town destinations.

Off West Yarmouth Road in West Yarmouth are Cranberry Bogs that provide a mix of walking in the open and in woodlands while offering a glimpse of one of Cape Cod’s local agriculture industries. The paths there are wide and a dog lover’s favorite. It’s also often a good place to spot wildlife.

Also in Yarmouth Port, behind the post office and close to the Bangs Hallet House, are the Nature Trails at the Historical Society of Old Yarmouth. Park in the small lot, pick up a trail map at the gatehouse and step back in time as you walk past a replica Wampanoag wetu and Kelley Chapel, built in 1873. As for hiking, since it’s Cape Cod, we must mention walking on the beach! South of Route 6, the beaches on Nantucket Sound, from Bass River to Parker’s River, or from Parker’s River to Great Island, provide miles of wonderful strolling. In the summer, walk barefoot at the water’s edge, and enjoy the splashes of warm water. In the winter, bundle up and luxuriate in the quiet expanse of sand and sea. While you can’t walk completely around Flax Pond, off White’s Path in South Yarmouth, you can discover short trails, through scrub pine and oak trees, that are perfect for younger kids.

44

We recommend that you try walking the same paths at different times of day; it can be a very different experience at sunrise or sunset. So, bring the whole family—including four-legged members: leashed dogs are welcome on the trails any time of year and on the beach between September 15 and May 15. In the summer take a sun hat, water and some bug spray, and if you are walking or biking in colder weather, be sure to wear layers and keep hydrated. No matter what the season, Yarmouth’s biking and hiking trails are a delight for everyone!

FOOD FROM THE

Heart

OF YARMOUTH

BY LISA C AVA N AU GH

Just about everyone who has ever lived in, or visited, Yarmouth has a meal memory from The Riverway Lobster House. “Everyone has a story about this place,” says Jeni Wheeler, Co-Founder and Director of Operations of The Family Table Collaborative (FTC), a local nonprofit which is the new occupant of the landmark restaurant. “Either they came with their grandparents, or celebrated their parents’ 50th anniversary or had their fifth birthday party at The Riverway. There is so much nostalgia here.”

The venerable eatery, which was originally opened in the mid nineteen forties by the Pazakis family, is now home to The Commons at Riverway, a multi-faceted entity that offers a weekly pick-up of prepared meals, a renovated tavern and cafe available for private functions and corporate events, the opportunity for local chefs and food entrepreneurs to rent FTC’s commercial kitchen and a Maker’s Market where local food makers and producers can sell their products. “It is another avenue for Cape-based producers to reach customers,” says Wheeler, of the market, which is located in the main lobby. “And it is a great opportunity for residents and visitors to the Cape to explore some fantastic locally created items.” Some of the products available include Gustare oils and vinegars, Lighthouse Keeper’s jams and jellies, Cape & Islands Craft Tea, Kayak Cookies and Chequessett Chocolates. FTC’s kitchen also allows for refrigerated and freezer storage for products that require it, which enables companies with perishable products, such as Chatham Ice Cream Bars, to distribute via The Commons at Riverway on an ongoing basis. All of the proceeds from the facility go back to support the mission of FTC, which is to assist Cape Cod families and seniors in need. Wheeler and co-founder Harry Henry, in partnership with the American Culinary Foundation, created the organization in early 2020, first by utilizing the donated kitchens of the Cape Codder Resort and Camp Wingate Kirkland, and the delivery trucks of Guaranteed Fresh and then eventually moving into the Riverway. “We realized there were a variety of factors causing food security problems here on the Cape, and that we could help,” says Wheeler. “Food that is not nutritionally dense impacts the healthcare system, the economy, and the physical and mental well-being of our community, so we are focused on providing nutritional security.”

FTC Co-Founder and Director of Operations Jeni Wheeler stands with Ophthalmologist and Cape Cod Women’s Association member, Kristy Wooler as The Commons at Riverway first opened for business, welcoming the Yarmouth community.

Now, in addition to making and delivering thousands of nutritious meals from its new permanent kitchen space, FTC is also hosting Wellness Eats, a nutritionally designed food program of the cancer support organization Cape Wellness Collaborative. All of these initiatives and partnerships reflect the goals of FTC to be truly collaborative within Yarmouth and the greater Cape Cod community. Wheeler also stresses the importance of using fresh, locally grown and harvested products. “We partner with many local farms and fishermen,” says Wheeler, who says she feels lucky to such wonderful resources on Cape Cod. “We want to show people the way to eat healthy, fresh, delicious, local food.”

47

The weekly take out pop-ups have proven very popular, and Wheeler expects to expand the days and times as the summer progresses. “We encourage everyone to come get a healthy, nutritious, delicious meal ready to enjoy at home, while doing some good for the community we all love,” says Wheeler. She also has plans to offer beach-ready nibbles, such as dips and salads. “It will be so simple to swing by, grab something to go, and head off to enjoy the Cape!” Being able to create and sell these nutritional delights from the Riverway makes it extra special. In fact, the original owner’s son, who is now in his eighties, came and donated cases of the famous Riverway dressing to sell in the marketplace. “They were the first folks to feed people from this building,“says Wheeler. “To get his stamp of approval meant so much.”

This is one of my all-time favorite recipes. That’s why it often ends up on the take-out menu at The Commons at The Riverway. Ingredients: • Fresh thick, locally caught white fish (or a head of fresh cauliflower if making the vegetarian version) • Trader Joe’s Chili Lime seasoning • Cilantro-lime seasoning and adobo (both available at almost any store) • Gustare olive oil, or your oil of choice • Jasmine rice • Can of spicy or regular black beans, or pinto beans • Chicken or veggie stock • Green and red cabbage (either or both) • Shredded carrot • Red onion • Local honey Riverway Dressing: • Apple cider vinegar • Fresh lime • Sour cream • Avocado or greens (or both) • Fresh cilantro (optional, but highly recommended) • Cape Abilities tomatoes and/or red bell pepper • Soft taco shells of your choice Almost all the vegetables can be found grown here on Cape Cod! Directions: Heat a cast iron skillet with 2 tablespoons of olive oil. Season the fish with adobo and Chili Lime seasoning, or slice the cauliflower into “steaks” and season the same way. Sear for 2 minutes on each side, cover, and cook on medium heat for an additional 2 to 3 minutes. In a small saucepan, bring 1 cup of stock to boil with 2 teaspoons of oil.

Add ½ cup of jasmine rice plus ½ teaspoon of cilantro-lime seasoning, and cook, covered, for approximately 20 minutes. With 5 minutes of cook time remaining, add the beans to the rice. When putting the tacos together, layer the slaw on the bottom, add whatever vegetables you choose (diced tomatoes and/or julienned red bell pepper add an extra pop of color). Add the fish and the lime crema (recipe follows), and top with fresh cilantro.

Slaw Directions: Slice finely the green cabbage and red onion and add pre-shredded carrots. Mix in 3 tablespoons of Riverway dressing, 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar, a teaspoon of fresh local honey, a splash of adobo and a squeeze of lime. Lime Crema Directions: To ½ cup of sour cream add 1 teaspoon Chili Lime seasoning and 2 teaspoons lime juice. It’s easy and super delicious.

Serve the rice and beans on the side.

Cape Cod St. Patrick’s Parade - 11 a.m. 2023 marks the 18th marching of the Cape Cod St. Patrick’s Parade! One of Massachusetts’ most well-known and well-loved St. Paddy’s Day celebrations, the parade takes over Route 28 for two miles from Long Pond Drive to Higgins Crowell Road. The parade has more than 70 participants, including more than 20 locally made floats competing for awards like Most Whimsical and Most Spectacular — 15 pipe and drum bands who lift spirits and keep the 60,000 spectators warm; and antique cars that inspire dreams of ownership and times gone by. Former Grand Marshals have included Bobby Orr of the Boston Bruins, Tim Kelley, NECN weatherman, and boxer Irish Mickey Ward. Route 28, South Yarmouth. capecodstpatricksparade.com
