20 MIDCAPE MAGAZINE 2024
In an age of convenience-driven online shopping, it is easy to forget that the best quality products and services can often be found right down the street. From candy and coffee to art and jewelry, our local makers offer a personal connection to their work and their community. These are just some of the businesses worth stopping by for handmade gifts or unique treats while visiting the MidCape towns.
YARMOUTH
Harvest of Barnstable
The shelves of this nature-inspired gift shop are filled with handmade gifts you won’t find elsewhere. Open since 1981, Harvest of Barnstable is treasured for its handcrafted silk botanicals, wreaths, and wall designs, as well as seashell wreaths and décor. In addition to walk-in customers, the manufacturer sells to retailers and catalog companies nationally and internationally. harvestofbarnstable.com
Voila!
Designs by Frederique
Those searching for one-of-akind, handcrafted items need to look no further than Frederique Poulain’s Main Street shop. The French artist specializes in painted ceramics, bags, and apparel featuring floral and equestrian designs. Her work is featured annually at equestrian and flower shows, including the Boston and Newport flower shows and Equine Affaire at The Big E. designsbyfrederique.com
Sur Tan
With four generations in leather design and manufacturing, the Sur Tan family knows its product. Handcrafted belts, accessories, jackets, and vests, including motorcycle riding gear, can be found in the store. Popular styles from the 1960s and ’70s have recently been reintroduced, proving that quality leather never goes out of style. surtanusa.com
Cape Cod Creamery
Although Cape Cod Creamery ice cream is sold at businesses throughout the Cape, it’s worth visiting one of its charming ice cream shops for hand-scooped deliciousness. The hormone-free ice cream is made with cream from New England dairies. Flavors with Cape-inspired names (Bass River Black Raspberry, Dennis Double Chocolate, and Cotuit Coffee) add a bit of local flavor. Besides South Yarmouth, Cape Cod Creamery also has locations in Dennis (seasonal) and Hyannis (year-round). capecodcreamery.com

Kandy Korner
For more than fifty years, the big, colorfully trimmed house on Main Street between Winter and High School streets in downtown Hyannis has been a sugary draw for generations of Cape Cod residents and visitors. Kandy Korner has been owned and managed since 2012 by Paulo Paraguay and his wife, Molly. As a teenager, Paulo started working for the previous owner, Paul Mazzeo, whom he considered a great mentor. The business is family-focused and kid-friendly, with a bright pink interior, plenty of penny candy choices, and delicious house-made salt water taffy, chocolates, ice cream, and caramels. kandykorner.com

Moonshine Leather
With more than 30 years of experience, leather craftsman and Indiana native Mike Kline recently had the opportunity to open a Cape Cod location of his Moonshine Leather Company. “A wholesale customer of ours decided to retire after 39 years of running his own leather shop and graciously invited us to take over his Main Street storefront in Hyannis,” says Kline. The busy family-run shop has a working leather studio where a team of artisans, including Kline’s daughter Anya, handcraft and sell a variety of stunning leather items such as wallets, purses, aprons, belts, cell phone holders, and accessories. They also feature handmade buckles made on the Cape by local artists. moonshineleather.com
Bayside Mattress Factory
At Hyannis’s Bayside Mattress Factory, you can purchase handmade and handcrafted mattresses tailored to each customer’s needs and comfort level. Owner Chris Kehoe, a Cape Cod native, has been making mattresses for over 45 years, starting as a young apprentice at Bon Repose Mattress, a local company founded in 1962. Kehoe says custom-sized mattresses for unique shapes and sizes of beds are Bayside’s specialty, and customers are welcome to visit their factory and showroom, where they can test a selection of mattresses and choose their perfect style. baysidemattressfactory.com

Today, in addition to their full slate of marine services, you can still purchase a custom-crafted Crosby Harbor Cat, Striper, Launch, Tug, Hawk, or Canyon from their experienced boat builders. The skilled team at Crosby is committed to long-standing standards of quality, functionality, and durability. Three Fins Coffee Roasters
Beloved by locals, this coffeehouse and roastery was designed as a gathering space where coffee lovers can enjoy their favorite drink and simply hang out. Along with their small-batch brews, Three Fins sells a selection of pastries and light snacks, with most of them baked on site. threefinscoffee.com
Ross Coppelman Goldsmith
In a sea of traditional Cape styles, Ross Coppelman’s artistic jewelry designs make a statement. His aesthetic was initially inspired by antiquity until he and his wife moved onto the Yarmouth Port tidal marsh over 20 years ago— and then everything changed. “I did a 180-degree turn to all of my work being nature-inspired,” he says. Incorporating natural elements like leaves, driftwood, and ocean waves has become a signature of Coppelman’s work. And for him, it never gets old: “It’s the creative part of it that gets me going every day.” rosscoppelman.com
Mill Stone Pottery
Eye-catching patterns and textures are a distinctive quality of Gail Turner’s creations. Stop by the little yellow shop to browse bakeware, planters, urns, art pieces, and more. Serveware clustered with tiny shells gives the impression of being found at the seashore, and a series of beige and copper-hued pumpkins and gourds make the perfect fall décor. millstonepottery.com

Hiking & Biking
Hike, bike, jog, bird watch, or take a leisurely stroll along any of the dozens of natural trails in the MidCape.
The 27-mile paved Cape Cod Rail Trail begins in Yarmouth, with parking available on Station Avenue and Peter Homer Park. It then crosses the Bass River, heading east, and continues through Dennis, with parking lots at Route 134 and Old Main Street. The Dennis Cycle Center and Barb’s Bike Shop are conveniently located right off the trail. Perfect for everyone from serious cyclists to multigenerational amblers, the trail wends its way through multiple towns to its endpoint in Wellfleet on the Outer Cape.
The iconic Bass Hole Boardwalk at Gray’s Beach is at one end of the expansive and fascinating Callery Darling Conservation Area, while Sandy Pond Conservation Center in West Yarmouth, South Yarmouth’s Flax Pond Recreation Area, and the Historical Society of Old Yarmouth’s Trails in Yarmouth Port are just a few of the idyllic locations to enjoy some time in nature.
Dennis also has a profusion of nature trails in gorgeous locations across town, such as Indian Lands, Sea View Park, Crowes Pasture Conservation Area, Fresh Pond Conservation Area and Dog Park, Whitfield Johnson Nature Trail, Flax Pond Conservation Area, and the Swan Pond Overlook.
Mass Audubon has a stunning location in Barnstable: the Long Pasture Wildlife Sanctuary off Route 6A, which has preserved sandy beaches, meadows, and woodland trails next to Barnstable Harbor. Two and a half miles of trails are open to the public to enjoy for a small fee.
Osterville’s Armstrong Kelley Park offers 8.5 acres of gardens, rare trees, and shady trails. Crocker Neck Conservation Area and Eagle Pond and Little River Sanctuary are both in Cotuit, while West Barnstable Conservation Area provides access to more than 20 miles of trails that meander through pine-oak forests. Barnstable Land Trust protects and conserves much of the natural space in Barnstable and offers guided hikes, lectures, and special programming.

Putt Putt!
A trip to Cape Cod is just not complete without a visit to a miniature golf course. Accessible and enjoyable for people of all ages, mini-golf offers a great chance to socialize, get a little exercise, and share plenty of laughs with your friends and family.
The MidCape has several fun and festive mini-golf facilities where you can showcase your putting skills. Three of our favorites are all located right on Route 28. West Yarmouth’s Wild Animal Lagoon takes you on a challenging course past elephants, giraffes, lions, gorillas, and hippos. South Yarmouth’s Pirate’s Cove delights players with a half-sunken pirate ship and other buccaneer-themed decor. Skull Island Adventure Golf & Sports World, also in South Yarmouth, is a complete fun center with a driving range, an arcade, and a spectacular mini-golf course featuring waterfalls, a haunted treasure cave, and a Swiss Family Robinson Tree House.
Catch a Wave
The shoreline isn’t the only place on the MidCape to dip your toes (or your whole body!) in the water. With an epic expansion launching this June, the newly renamed Wicked Waves (formerly Cape Cod Inflatable Park) is a splash-tactic outdoor adventure center.
The family-friendly park offers five enormous waterslides, a 650-foot lazy river, a FlowRider stand-up surf machine, lily pad walks, a toddler pool, and Cape Cod’s only swim-up pool bar. With a food truck for snacks and a game-filled “Sharkade,” Wicked Waves is guaranteed to provide a bucket full of fun.
Water Adventures continued…
With the largest harbor on the MidCape, Hyannis is a gateway to on-the-sea adventures. Both Hy-Line Cruises and The Steamship Authority offer a robust schedule of harbor cruises and ferries to Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard. There are sailing and fishing charters available at Hyannis Harbor, such as the Helen H, and whale watching opportunities aboard Hyannis Whale Watchers, which departs from Barnstable Harbor and Dolphin Fleet departing from Provincetown. If you have your own vessel, Hyannis Marina has over 180 slips that can accommodate small motorboats to deep draft sailboats and mega yachts.
If you want to travel a bit further from the MidCape for more on the water fun, you can take an exciting nature discovery cruise with Monomoy Seal Excursions which departs from Harwich, or a delightful Falmouth to Martha’s Vineyard boat ride on the Island Queen

Yarmouth Sand Sculpture Trail
GET READY FOR SANDY ADVENTURES!
The popular and creative Yarmouth Sand Sculpture Trail is back and as fascinating and entertaining as ever. For more than a decade, the genius duo of Sean Fitzpatrick and his wife, Tracey, of Fitzysnowman Studios have transformed grand piles of sand into hundreds of astounding sculptures throughout town.
In partnership with the Yarmouth Chamber of Commerce, participating businesses and organizations collaborate with Fitzysnowman to conceive of a perfect theme and design for the sandy creation that will adorn their grounds. Then, each May, the Fitzpatricks get to work, dumping and treating tons of sand and then carving and perfecting a delightful collection of crabs and castles, lighthouses and lobsters, mermaids and motorcycles.
Sean and Tracey toil at a breakneck pace, often happily observed by curious onlookers, to ensure the entire trail is ready for the busy summer season. Each artwork uses between 3 and 5 tons of sand and takes at least a day to pack and carve. “It’s all physics,” says Sean Fitzpatrick, of the combination of sand, water, pressure, and balance. The finished sculptures are sprayed with a coating of water and glue to set and protect the structure and allow everyone to enjoy them all summer long.
The Sand Sculpture Trail features approximately 30 different sculptures across every part of Yarmouth. Starting in late June, you can pick up a map at the Yarmouth Chamber of Commerce or download one from the Chamber website. Discovering all the sculptures is an incredibly fun family activity, so be sure to grab a map and go!

Hyannis Kennedy Legacy Trail
WITH LAST YEAR’S SOMBER 60TH
ANNIVERSARY of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, interest in the Kennedys’ longstanding connection to Cape Cod is greater than ever. You can explore the history of this iconic family on the Hyannis Kennedy Legacy Trail. This self-guided walking tour travels through downtown Hyannis, with stops highlighting important milestones related to JFK and his family.
Beginning at the John F. Kennedy Hyannis Museum at 397 Main Street in Hyannis, the 1.6-mile trail, funded in part through the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Gateway City Park Grant program, will take you to such notable spots as St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, where the family has been attending services since the 1920s, and the Hyannis Armory, where JFK gave his acceptance speech upon being elected as the 35th President of the United States.
Look for refreshed signs with updated information along each stop on the trail about the location and its link to the Kennedys.
The family first began summering in Hyannis Port in the late 1920s, when JFK’s parents, Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy and Joseph P. Kennedy, purchased a beachside home, which expanded to include additional structures to become what is known as the Kennedy Compound.
The Cape took on great nostalgic and restorative meaning to the family, most especially JFK, who once said, “I always come back to the Cape and walk on the beach when I have a tough decision to make.”

Dennis Village Art Stroll
MORE OF A SELF-DIRECTED MEANDER, this
unofficial route through the town’s premier art and cultural facilities can be considered the essential “Dennis Village Art Stroll.”
Charmingly situated on Route 6A (also called the Old King’s Highway), this creative campus, known as the Cape Cod Center for the Arts, includes the renowned Cape Cod Museum of Art (CCMoA), the historic Cape Cinema, and the illustrious Cape Playhouse. Also in the vicinity is a collection of eateries, wine bars, gift shops, artisans’ galleries, and services.
First imagined by the late local potter and sculptor Harry Holl in the 1980s, the CCMoA was created to celebrate and preserve the work of artists associated with Cape Cod and the Islands. Through its permanent collection, temporary exhibitions, and educational programming, the museum serves as an art hub for the region.
Next door is the Cape Cinema, which has been providing first-run and retrospective films, and concerts since 1930. Looking quite a bit like a renovated church, the white clapboard building has always been a movie house, albeit one whose design was inspired by the South Congregational Church in Centerville.
Inside, the ceiling of the main cinema space is adorned with an enormous constellation-themed mural by renowned painter and illustrator Rockwell Kent. Over the years, both the mural and the rest of the cinema have undergone renovations, and today, it is a fascinating place to sit back and enjoy a film.
On the eastern edge of the campus is the historic Cape
Playhouse, which has been operating continuously since 1927. As the country’s longest-running professional summer theater, the Playhouse has seen such acting luminaries as Julie Andrews, Bernadette Peters, Bette Davis, Henry Fonda, and Ginger Rogers.
Every summer, this vibrant artistic center presents three months’ worth of old favorites and innovative new plays and musicals, hosts a summer theater school, and stages children’s shows. The venerable theater has recently undergone some upgrades, adding air conditioning and new seat cushions. In preparation for its 100th year anniversary celebration, more improvements are planned, including adding heat to make the theater a year-round venue that residents and visitors can enjoy.

FARMING HAS BEEN AN ESSENTIAL PART OF CAPE COD’S HERITAGE FOR CENTURIES.
Once the European settlers were taught about the local soil and harvestable crops, such as corn, beans, and cranberries, by the native Wampanoag tribes, working the land became a major livelihood for the early colonists. Even as locals took up marine-based occupations, Cape Cod remained an agricultural hot spot because of its favorable weather conditions and transportation access to major ports.
While agriculture is no longer a significant industry here, Cape Cod is still a marvelous place for growing fruit, vegetables, herbs, and flowers, with a vibrant community of small farmers. Here are a few local farms on the MidCape that offer delicious fresh produce and a chance to make friends with some animals, connect with the community, and savor the sights and sounds of traditional Cape Cod.
TAYLOR BRAY FARM
Tucked north of Route 6A in Yarmouth Port is Taylor Bray Farm, a historic 17th-century farm that allows visitors to glimpse Cape Cod’s past, support conservation, and observe farm animals at play. Now maintained by the nonprofit Taylor-Bray Farm Preservation Association, the farm was first founded in 1639 by Richard and Ruth Taylor, passed down to their descendants (some of whom fought in the Revolutionary War), and eventually purchased by a pair of local brothers, George and William Bray, in 1896. To preserve the unique and important site, the town bought the property in 1987.
The Preservation Association has rebuilt the livestock barns and restored pastures so visitors can enjoy the resident Scottish Highland cows, goats, miniature donkeys, sheep, and chickens, stroll the
boardwalk into the Black Flats Marsh, or take a walk through the woods or a hayride along the Don McIntyre Trail. Staff members at Taylor-Bray Farm are excited to have a newly established beehive, as their bees help pollinate the farm’s plants and trees, including the blueberry patch, pumpkin patch, and community garden.
Working in partnership with the Town of Yarmouth, the organization has also restored the late-18th-century farmhouse and is working on the 19th-century barn. Visitors are welcome every day from dawn to dusk. Admission is free, and donations are greatly appreciated. Farmhouse tours and special farm festivals are also on the calendar throughout much of the year.

CAPE ABILITIES FARM
“Shopping at the farm allows our customers to be a part of our mission,” says Tracey Fraser, Director of Cape Abilities Farm. “They appreciate the farm atmosphere, quality customer service, the skills of our team, and the diversity of our product offerings. They get to experience our team members’ amazing abilities and talents first hand, and respect and wish to support the Cape Abilities mission.”
Located on Route 6A in Dennis Village, Cape Abilities Farm was established in 2006 as a social enterprise of Cape Abilities, a nonprofit that provides jobs, homes, transportation, and social and therapeutic services for people with disabilities across Cape Cod. “The Farm employs individuals of all abilities—together, we are an inclusive workforce learning and working side by side,” says Fraser.
“Every team member brings their unique perspective, strengths, and goals to the job, and we are a stronger team because of it.”
Open to the public yearround, the farm sells fresh produce, organic and local food, flowers, gifts, art, and more.
It hosts various pop-up events with local makers, participates in other farm markets, and offers produce membership programs.
“Our customers know it is more than a farm,” says Fraser. “It’s an inclusive community.”

CAPE COD ORGANIC FARM
When he first started Cape Cod Organic Farm in 1996, Tim Friary was a newly single dad who wanted an occupation that would fit his and his kids’ schedules. Now, nearly 30 years later, he runs his thriving certified organic farm on historic Route 6A in Barnstable Village. The farm specializes in growing organic fruits and vegetables, cut flowers, herbs, and native grasses used in land restoration.
“My customer base says they keep coming back for our on-farm-produced organic produce for several reasons,” says Friary. “They know we sell only the freshest nutrientdense produce, which tastes great and has a long shelf life.” CC Organic Farm has its own farm stand and sells its produce at local farmers markets across Cape Cod. Friary and his team also offer pick-your-own flowers and often have CSA programs for longterm visitors and residents to enjoy. capecodorganicfarm.org

You can learn more and find out how to enter an antique car (typically at least 25 years old and maintained in its original condition) by visiting dennischamber.com
