There are dozens of local businesses on the MidCape where you can indulge your sweet tooth. Here is a roundup of some of the best in Yarmouth, Barnstable, and Dennis.
BY KELLIE INNES
has become a tradition for generations. “We’ve been here since 1968, and we’re part of the community and part of these people’s childhoods and vacations,” says owner Paulo Paraguay. 474 Main St., Hyannis, kandykorner.com
Snack on a sweet and practice your putt at Steve and Sue’s Par-tee . When Steve and Sue Fardele met at a chocolate store as teenagers, it was only fate that they would go on to open the ice cream stand and mini golf course together in 1977. Now, generations of the family still working at the business blend old-fashioned picks like hot fudge sundaes with specialty treats such as Pina Colada ice cream or a series of blended flurry flavors. 455 West Main St., Hyannis, parteefreeze.com
Barnstable
Transport yourself to the streets of Paris with a stop at Chez Antoine Café. Offering comfort food inspired by French and Belgian culinary traditions, the café offers customers a wide variety of affordable coffee, pastries, and desserts. Take home a taste of European delicacies with a collection of confectionery products sold exclusively in the US at Chez Antoine. 357 Main St., Hyannis, orderchezantoinecafe.com
Wake up and smell the bagels at Bagels & Beyond, a breakfast and lunch place with locations in Hyannis and West Yarmouth. With fresh bagels made every morning, visitors can go simple with house-made cream cheese—with flavors including garlic herb and maple walnut raisin—or make it a sandwich with plenty of fixings. For those looking to stay on the sweet side, check out the pastry and muffin cases, which are filled daily with freshly baked muffins, cinnamon rolls, Danish pastries, and mini bread. 394 Main St., Hyannis and 311 Rte. 28, West Yarmouth, bagelsandbeyondcc.com
Looking at the pastry options of the Mariner Cafe feels like looking at works of art. Each pastry is crafted by hand and exquisitely designed, folded, baked and decorated. The New York Rolls are a particular treat, with a croissant dough base and pastry cream filling. The pastry chef at Mariner Cafe tops them with various flavors from traditional chocolate ganache to Lotus Biscoff cookies. The drinks are just as eye-catching and mouth-watering. 282 Main St., Hyannis, mariner.cafe
As the oldest ice cream shop on Cape Cod and in Massachusetts, Four Seas Ice Cream has delivered old-fashioned, homemade ice cream for more than 90 years. Known for fruity flavors like Fresh Strawberry and Fresh Peach, Four Seas also embraces local New England flavors. Take, for instance, the Penuche Pecan flavor, featuring a brown sugar fudge made from an old family recipe. And if you’re looking to order a milkshake, be ready to know local lingo—true New Englanders know that Four Seas Ice Cream serves frappes. 360 S. Main St., Centerville, fourseasicecream.com
Bass River Mercantile’s 200-yearold building overlooks the Bass River Bridge. Inside the Victorianera storefront is an aura of retro nostalgia: shelves of old-time penny candies surround the décor featuring captains’ wheels and wooden mermaids. Iconic with Cape Cod visitors and residents, Bass River Mercantile even inspires creativity. “One of my young customers wrote a poem about the store last year and got an A+,” laughs owner Frank Cadwell. 2 N. Main St., South Yarmouth, facebook.com/BRmercantile
Yarmouth
West Yarmouth’s Hole in One Bakery stands out from a world full of coffee shops. The staff is always enthusiastic about helping customers find the perfect, scrumptious treat. The bakery offers a wide range of homemade goods, from hand-cut signature donuts and French toast coffee rolls to egg sandwiches made fresh to order. Check out their custom cakes if you want to take the Hole in One experience home. 582 Main St., West Yarmouth, theholecapecod.com
Cape Cod Creamery is a MidCape mainstay that uses the finest ingredients mixed with hormone-free cream sourced from New England dairies. Flavor names like Dennis Double Chocolate and Bass River Black Raspberry make them a neighborhood favorite. The South Yarmouth location at 5 Theater Colony Road is open seasonally other locations are in Dennis (seasonal) and Hyannis (year-round). 5 Theater Colony Rd., South Yarmouth; 645 Iyannough Rd., Hyannis; 716 Main St., Dennis, capecodcreamery.com
Enjoy homemade gelato at Caffè Gelato Bertini. Each batch is made from scratch following old Bertini family recipes from Florence, including local milk, sugar, and imported Italian flavorings. This results in a smooth, dense, bold treat with a lower fat content than American-style ice cream. Try a taste from their rotating selection—including the classic Stracciatella—in a traditional scoop or paired with their house-made espresso. 1196 Rte. 28, Unit D, South Yarmouth, capecodgelato.com
Where every visit is a
With its bright-red awning and large-scale Candy sign, it’s hard to miss Cape Cod Candy Company on Route 28 in South Yarmouth. This old-fashioned candy store sells popular handcrafted sweets such as fudge, saltwater taffy, and tons of candy choices to choose from (and you can buy it in bulk). 975 Rte. 28, South Yarmouth, capecodcandy.co
SUGAR RUSH
Dennis
Nothing says Cape Cod like a fudge and candy store located in a historic house. The locally owned and operated Stage Stop Candy has thrived for 40 years based on its principles of tradition, family legacy, and commitment to sweeten their customers’ days. Sweetness is the name of the game when it comes to the made-in-house confections, such as chocolate fudge, sea-salt caramels, and chocolates shaped in sea-themed molds of shells, lighthouses, and more. 411 Main St., Dennis Port, stagestopcandy.com
While Captain Baker Donut Shop is relatively new on the Cape Cod scene—it opened in August of 2020—it’s become an instant classic. The historic landmark attracts tourists for photo opportunities, and the smell of breakfast keeps them walking through the doors. Though their donut flavors rotate depending on the day, one beloved and recurring flavor is the Birthday Cake Donut, featuring vanilla glaze, rainbow sprinkles, and strawberry drizzle on an old-fashioned donut. “We get a lot of donut lovers from around the world,” shares owner Lauren Rengucci. 485 Main St., West Dennis, captainbakerdonuts.com
Woolfie’s Bakery is a local hot spot, open only in the summer. Visitors are encouraged to arrive close to opening (7 a.m.) to get their first-choice pastries, coffee, and other goods—they stay open only as long as supplies last. If you crave your favorite muffins—such as Double Chocolate or Orange Cranberry Nut— over the winter months, check out Woolfie’s shipping schedule online for on-demand delivery. 279 Lower County Rd., Dennis Port, woolfies.com
Featured in several publications, including the Boston Globe and Food and Wine magazine, Sundae School is well known for serving homemade ice cream since 1976. From its historic barn location to the nostalgic ice cream parlor interior, Sundae School seeks to invoke old memories from generations of fans while creating new ones. Each small batch made in-house is bursting with flavor due to the finest and freshest ingredients—the pistachio ice cream even has real pistachios in the mix. 381 Lower County Rd., Dennis Port, sundaeschool.com
Almost anyone can feel a sense of nostalgia when they hear the bells and music of an ice cream truck coming down the street. Cape Cones capitalizes on this feeling by serving all the novelty hits that kids (and adults) know and love. Cape Cones is also recognizable beyond its traditional jingle. Matilda, as owner Brien Hines lovingly calls the truck, is painted a bright aquamarine color, calling to mind both the nearby ocean and mint ice cream. “I am creating smiles, one customer at a time,” Hines says. capeconesllc@gmail.com
While Kream ‘N Kone might be known for its award-winning fried clams, seafood platters, and fresh lobster rolls, it started as a small ice cream stand. You can still taste the iconic soft serve in the traditional vanilla, chocolate, or a swirl, or explore 24 additional unique flavors. For those dining in, you’ll get a chance to see a view of the Swan River and a Cape Cod landmark: the iconic Kream ‘N Kone sign that reminds customers of a nostalgic time of driveup diners and stands. 961 Main St., West Dennis, kreamnkone.com

For the History Buff
From Indigenous people’s homelands that date back 10,000 years and sites vital to the American Revolution to the Shiverick Shipyard of the early 1800s and classic Captains’ homes, from the journey of the Coast Guard to sports cars from the 1960s, the MidCape covers every era imaginable. We encourage you to dig into the past at these museums and collections in our three towns. Also, check out the Cape Cod Museum Trail (capecodmuseumtrail. com), which provides an online source of information about more than 75 museums and cultural and historic sites.
The Historical Society of Old Yarmouth (hsoy.org) has a mission to preserve Yarmouth’s history, HSOY oversees several museums, nature trails, event spaces and the Captains’ Mile collection of historic homes.
Yarmouth Port is a storied part of town with many fascinating sites. The Edward Gorey House - 8 Strawberry Lane, was once the home of the renowned author and illustrator, and its annual Gorey exhibits are open to the public from early April through December. Around the corner on Route 6A, Thacher Hall hosts events and programs open to the public. A fine example of American Gothic architecture, this was originally a church. Winslow Crocker House, a historic circa 1780 house, is filled
with an impressive collection of antique furniture, colorful hooked rugs, ceramics, and pewter.
Further east in Yarmouth Port is Taylor Bray Farm, 108 Bray Farm Road, a Colonial-era farm with friendly animals, restored buildings, and a marsh boardwalk.
Elsewhere in Yarmouth, you will find the Judah Baker Windmill at 89 River Street, South Yarmouth, which has free tours of this historic windmill, and the Whydah Pirate Museum, 674 Route 28, West Yarmouth. This family-friendly attraction has an extensive collection of artifacts recovered from a pirate ship wrecked off the Cape Cod coast in 1717.
In Dennis, many historic locales
are overseen by the Dennis Historical Society (dennishistoricalsociety.org). This nonprofit educational organization promotes and preserves museums and historical sites in town, like the Jericho Historical Center, Carleton Hall, Liberty Hall, and the Dennis Union Church. The Historical Society also provides a searchable digital archive and an online bookstore.
Barnstable covers land, sea, and presidential history through museums and collections.
The Coast Guard Heritage Museum at 3353 Main Street, Barnstable, offers many informative exhibits that trace the Cape’s role in developing the Coast Guard from its early Massachusetts origins to its modern service. The Cape Cod Maritime Museum on 135 South Street, Hyannis, is a harbor-adjacent center that celebrates Cape Cod’s rich maritime traditions and history. It features a collection of artifacts, photographs, and a historic boat collection. Programs include boat building and restoration, art exhibitions, classes, and kids’ activities.
The oft-visited John F. Kennedy Hyannis Museum, 397 Main Street, has a mission to preserve and promote the legacy of President John F. Kennedy and his family and their deep connections to Cape Cod.
The Toad Hall Classic Car Collection, 288 Scudder Avenue, Hyannis, showcases a collection of 30 all-red, classic English, Japanese, and European sports cars from the 1950s and 1960s.

For the Outdoor Adventurer
Take a cruise on your bike or onboard a whale watcher. Paddle, swim, or float on our ponds, lakes, and rivers, or head farther offshore into Cape Cod Bay or Nantucket Sound. On land or sea, the MidCape is ideal for whatever energetic or relaxing activity suits your fancy.
WHALES AND WATER!
Seek out cetaceans with Hyannis Whale Watcher Cruises, 269 Mill Way, Barnstable aboard the “Whale Watcher,” a 100-ft. catamaran with licensed captains and a professional naturalist aboard—a speedy, comfortable, and environmentally friendly ride to search for whales. Or travel to the tip of the Cape and join a Dolphin Fleet Whale Watch, 307 Commercial Street, Provincetown, where trained naturalists guide you in observing the whales that seasonally visit Cape Cod’s waters.
Take a shore cruise or ferry to your next destination or day trip with HyLine Cruises, 200 Ocean Street, Ocean Street Dock, Hyannis. Hy-Line operates passenger ferries to Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard, deep-sea fishing excursions, and cruises through the Cape Cod Canal and Hyannis Harbor. The Steamship Authority, at 69 South Street, Hyannis, has daily year-round passenger (and on some vessels, passenger and vehicle) ferry service from Hyannis or Woods Hole to Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket. Farther afield is the Island Queen, 75 Falmouth Heights Road, Falmouth. From mid-May through
mid-October, board the 125-foot “Island Queen” for a 35-minute trip to Oak Bluffs on Martha’s Vineyard
See the sea-sights with Monomoy Island Excursions, 731 Rte. 28, Harwich Port, which offers naturalist-narrated tours of Monomoy, a barrier island and wildlife refuge, home to thousands of gray and harbor seals plus hundreds of species of birds, or jump aboard a lighthouse harbor cruise or Hyannis Harbor afternoon or sunset tour on the catamaran “Bay Spirit” or enjoy a two-hour sailing adventure on “Bay Breeze” with Bay Spirit Tours, 180 Ocean Street, Hyannis.
CYCLE-MANIA!
Grab your wheels (two wheels, that is) and enjoy the many paths and trails ideal for a day of pedaling. Barbara’s Bikes & Sports Equipment, located at 430 Rte. 134 in South Dennis, is easily accessible and has a wide selection of rental bikes, including mountain, comfort, road, tandem, and e-bikes. Another spot with direct bike path access is Dennis Cycle Center on 249 Great Western Road, South Dennis,
an all-purpose center offering bike rentals, sales, and repairs. Palm City Bike Shop, 1055 Route 28, South Yarmouth, is just over a mile from the beach. This full-service bike store offers rentals, sales, and repairs— including tune-ups and assembly of e-bikes, hybrids, BMXs, kids’ bikes, and more. Brewster Cycle Center, 442 Underpass Road, Brewster, is located just up the road from MidCape and close to the Rail Trail. This friendly bike shop rents high-quality cycling equipment for the whole family.
RENT YOUR OWN
Get out on the water on your terms, with a rental from Bass River Kayaks and Paddleboards, 118 Main Street, West Dennis. Single and Titan (3-person) paddleboards and kayaks are available for rent on the Bass River. CC Waterways is located on the banks of the Swan River, and offers four different rental boat models: kayak, stand-up paddleboard, canoe, and pedal boat. MOCEAN, 708 Main Street, Route 6A, Dennis, is a retailer with a great selection of apparel, beach toys, accessories, and gear to outfit your outdoor adventure, plus kayak and paddleboard rentals.

The Division of Natural Resources protects, preserves, promotes, and manages the town of Yarmouth’s natural resources, waters, and wild animal resources.
When living on or visiting the MidCape, we are always close to wild animals— even though we may not realize it.
“It’s amazing what’s out there,” says Ian Ives, the Sanctuary Director at Mass Audubon Long Pasture Wildlife Sanctuary in Barnstable. “We have set up cameras at our sanctuary, and we always see an astounding amount of wildlife movement. Even in close proximity to our Nature Center buildings, we have seen nine different mammals within 100 feet of our discovery center.”
Ives explains that subsets of animals live within the various habitats that are prevalent here.
“For example, there’s a lot of open grassland habitat that people can explore, and there’s a very specific subset of birds in that type of habitat in the spring and summer,” says Ives.
Spring/summer field birds include
• Crowes Pasture Beach
• Princess Beach
• Shoop Garden
DENNIS
• Flax Pond
• Indian Lands
The Dennis Department of Natural Resources is available to help with emergencies regarding wild animals.

• Chase Garden Creek, Dennis;
• Sesuit Creek, East Dennis;
• Cedar Pond, East Dennis;
• Sesuit Harbor, East Dennis;
• Nickerson Trail, South Dennis;
• Fresh Pond, South Dennis;
• Swan River Overlook, West Dennis.
American woodcock, American kestrel, Meadowlark, savannah and grasshopper sparrows. “You might spot these species at the Marston Mills Airport, Long Pasture Wildlife Sanctuary, and Fuller Farm,” says Ives.
Summer woodland birds such as the eastern towhee, ovenbird, scarlet and summer tanager, eastern wood peewee, hermit thrush, cooper’s hawk, great horned owl, and eastern screech owl tend to like places like West Barnstable Conservation Area and the Barnstable Great Marsh Wildlife Sanctuary.
“It is easy to go to your nearest pond, walk out three feet with your binoculars, and see seven or eight different species of birds,” says Ives. Some freshwater fowl you can see in winter are Northern pintail, wood duck, ring-necked duck, and hooded merganser, while, in spring and summer, you might observe belted kingfishers, Canada

Clean Water, Thriving Future
Imagine crystal-clear waters, healthy shellfish, and a thriving Yarmouth ecosystem. The Wastewater Project makes this a reality, investing in clean drinking water and protecting our natural beauty. While construction causes temporary disruption, it means a stronger future for local businesses and a healthier environment.
Yarmouth is committed to minimizing impact and keeping you informed. “Today’s Work, Tomorrow’s Clean Water.” Enjoy Yarmouth this summer as we pause construction, and please
geese, mute swans (which are not native), common yellowthroat, and red-winged blackbirds.
Most of us will, at some point, spot chipmunks, squirrels, and at night, raccoons and opossums in and around our neighborhoods, but Ives also describes the lesser-known but still prominent mammals we share the MidCape with throughout the year: coyote, mink, short-tailed weasel, otter, and the very rare, secretive fisher. These animals frequent Long Pasture Wildlife Sanctuary, Skunknett River Wildlife Sanctuary, and the Bridge Creek Conservation Area.
No guide to animals on Cape Cod would be complete without our beloved sea mammals and shore birds. Summer beach birds include piping plovers, sandpipers, American oystercatchers, Northern harriers, osprey, least tern, and common tern. On the MidCape, these can be seen at Sandy Neck Barrier Beach, Grays Beach, Crowes Pasture, Long Pasture Wildlife Sanctuary, and Sampsons Dead Neck Island. On these beaches in the winter, you might spot Scoters, Eiders,
bufflehead, mergansers, red throated loons, common loons, snowy owls, or even a bald eagle.
“Prominent iconic sea creatures here in the summer are seals, sea turtles, and the humpback whale,” adds Ives, “Oysters, horseshoe crabs, moon snails, fiddler crabs, quahogs, and spider crabs make their home on Cape Cod’s tidal flats.”
Keeping safety and the environment in mind is always essential, regardless of where you are looking and what you discover. “Tread lightly to enjoy the natural world,” says Ives. “Take pictures but keep a respectful distance and honor that they’re the wild creatures and we’re visiting.” He reminds people to leave no trace, stay on designated trails, keep dogs on leash, and make little noise. “If the wild animal “flushes” out upon your presence, you have gotten too close.”
Ives notes that wild animals are all around us, but we never look up. “There’s a lot more out there than people might think, so if you dive in a little deeper, you’d be surprised what you see.”
Cape Cod’s beautiful natural world has long captivated and inspired artists, from painters to poets to photographers, such as Yarmouth resident Betty Wiley, whose evocative images grace these pages.
Headquartered in Yarmouth, the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) rescues and protects animals worldwide. With projects in more than 40 countries, IFAW rescues individual animals, works to prevent animal cruelty, and advocates for protecting wildlife and habitats. Here on Cape Cod, the organization’s animal experts see more instances of live mass strandings of dolphins than are seen anywhere else in the world.
IFAW’s marine mammal rescue program has rapid and effective response techniques that have increased the survival rate of these stranded animals. IFAW’s new Dolphin Rescue Center on Cape Cod is a firstof-its-kind rehabilitation facility that provides shortterm intensive care designed to improve post-release survival for stranded small cetaceans (dolphins and porpoises) suffering from acute conditions.
