Sharing in Abundance
We all win when everyone pitches in. Here’s a look at our community impact.
At The Broadmoor, we firmly believe in the power of a thriving community, recognizing its benefits for everyone involved. This conviction drives our commitment to being a steadfast community partner. Every year, The Broadmoor family of employees dedicate volunteer hours to support various organizations, making a tangible impact and enhancing lives.
SPRINGS RESCUE MISSION
Supporting Springs Rescue Mission in their mission to provide holistic support for the homeless population, we recently collected warm outerwear through an employee coat drive. Additionally, El Pomar Foundation and The Anschutz Foundation, both associated with the resort, each contributed funds to purchase a refrigerated truck,
allowing the mission to safely transport prepared food from The Broadmoor and other organizations. The Broadmoor donates more than 8,000 pounds of food annually to the mission.
EL PASO COUNTY SCHOOLS
Recognizing education as the foundation of a thriving community, we’ve proudly supported initiatives in El Paso County Schools. This
past year, in honor of the 140th anniversary of Seven Falls as a tourism destination, The Broadmoor partnered with local third-grade classrooms to decorate four-foot-tall statues of Seven Falls’ mascot, Chester the Chipmunk. The students’ creations were displayed along a trail leading to Seven Falls, and each classroom enjoyed a field trip to see them on display.
HOMEWARD PIKES PEAK
Committed to ending homelessness in our community, we collaborate with organizations like Homeward Pikes Peak, offering support and donations.
CARE AND SHARE
Understanding that fighting hunger is a shared responsibility, we actively participate in Care and Share initiatives, ensuring that no one goes hungry. Our most recent donation amounted to $6,000 to support programs.
OLD STAGE ROAD
Actively engaging in initiatives around Old Stage Road, we contribute to the improvement of local infrastructure, keeping it clean for recreational use and wildlife.
FREMONT ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Strengthening educational foundations, our involvement with Fremont Elementary School includes dedicating a full day to help refresh and repaint the campus.
PEAK EDUCATION
Acknowledging the importance of empowering students, we proudly contribute to Peak Education programs, with our most recent donation being several dozen televisions.
WESTSIDE CARES
Reflecting our dedication to addressing the needs of vulnerable populations, our support for Westside Cares includes a recent donation of television sets and other items.
COLORADO MAKE-A-WISH
Collaborating with Make-A-Wish Colorado, we make dreams come true for children facing critical illnesses.
FAN FEST
Enhancing community bonding and entertainment, our participation in Fan Fest events includes sponsoring The Broadmoor Pikes Peak International Hill Climb.
ARMY COMMUNITY SERVICE
Prioritizing support for our military community, our collaboration with Army Community Service reflects our commitment.
VITALANT
Hosting two blood drives a year at The Broadmoor, our efforts have resulted in over forty whole blood donations, saving more than a hundred lives.
Saddle Up
The Broadmoor Winter Polo Classic revives a century-old tradition.
Polo returned to The Broadmoor in February 2022 with the inaugural Broadmoor Winter Polo Classic. The event, a collaboration between the resort and the Colorado Springs Sports Corporation, marks a renewed tradition at the resort.
The roots of polo at The Broadmoor trace back to its founder, Spencer Penrose, an avid equestrian who established The Broadmoor Polo Association and The Penrose Polo Park in 1924. The resort once had stables for more than 400 horses and at least four polo fields.
In 2024, more than 800 spectators gathered at the Norris Penrose Event Center to witness The Penrose Polo Team compete against Emerald Valley Polo. The spirited match, consisting of four sevenminute periods or “chukkers,” ended with the Penrose team hoisting the Spencer Penrose Polo Park Cup after a dramatic tiebreaker.

Jewel of the Rockies
Since its founding in 1918, The Broadmoor has shone like a multifaceted jewel amidst its stunning Rocky Mountain setting. The resort has also seen its share of colorful human history, from wild Prohibition-era parties hosted by founder Spencer Penrose to hosting celebrity guests and world leaders. There was even a time when actor John Wayne delivered a shrimp platter to the room of unsuspecting guests (less several shrimp). Explore the dynamic and ongoing history of the world’s most unique resort with the newly updated book, The Broadmoor Story, available in the Signature Shop and online at Broadmoor.com
Rise & Shine
Watching the sun crest above the horizon from the summit of America’s Mountain is an unforgettable experience. While The Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway operates yearround, weather permitting, it’s worth planning to board one of several specially scheduled sunrise trains to witness this panoramic natural masterpiece. Proceeds from sunrise train excursions benefit community organizations, including local schools, libraries, and first responders. Visit CogRailway.com for schedules and ticketing information, and pick up a copy of the new book All Aboard for America’s Mountain at the depot to discover the history and technological feats behind the world’s highest cog railway.
Bird’s-Eye View
The Broadmoor Soaring Adventure, ranked by TripAdvisor among the “10 Best Experiences” worldwide, is a highflying adventure that propels you across the “Grandest Mile of Scenery in Colorado.” Located in the secluded South Cheyenne Canyon, the Soaring Adventure consists of ten zip lines, divided between the Woods and Fins (pictured) courses. They range in distance from 250 feet to 1,800 feet, with some moderate hiking, two rope-bridge crossings, and a controlled 180-foot rappel at the end that offers stunning views of Seven Falls and the canyon below.

THE SPA AT THE BROADMOOR AND THE BROADMOOR SALON
Elevated Skincare
Top tips for caring for your skin at high altitude.
By Rebecca TreonAs much as there is to love about Colorado, it’s also the perfect storm of things potentially damaging your skin: Dry air, high altitude, sun, extreme cold and heat, and wind can all be irritating. We asked Cassie Hernandez, The Broadmoor’s Spa, Salon & Fitness Director, for tips on caring for your body’s largest organ.
DOUBLE DOWN ON MOISTURIZER
Use a thicker, more concentrated moisturizer with a serum base to penetrate deeper and provide a more lasting barrier.
WEAR SUNSCREEN
Wearing sunscreen daily is one of Hernandez’s nonnegotiables, as potentially damaging UVA and UVB rays are stronger at higher elevations.
DRINK WATER
The human body absorbs water at a surprising rate, Hernandez says, which promotes wellhydrated skin.
TAKE A COOLER SHOWER
A hot shower is one of life’s little luxuries, especially in winter—which is when skin is prone to dry out.
Hernandez recommends turning the shower to cool just before you get out to close the pores and lock in moisture.
CHECK YOUR INGREDIENTS
Natural is better, whether for your face or all-over products. Hernandez recommends avoiding products with lots of unpronounceable ingredients. She says pure coconut or avocado oil works wonderfully for your body.
ENJOY A MONTHLY FACIAL
Hernandez encourages including a monthly facial in your skincare routine. Hernandez’s fave is the Rise and Shine Facial, which gently exfoliates and leaves skin smooth and supple.
The Forbes Five-Star Spa at The Broadmoor and The Broadmoor Salon feature an array of treatments, products, and services in a relaxing environment. Spa guests are invited to use all the spa’s amenities on the day of their scheduled treatment. Treatment slots do book up, however. We recommend booking your services in advance to ensure availability. Visit Broadmoor.com or call (844) 508-6717 for reservations.
How Does Your Garden Grow?
The Broadmoor’s head of landscaping shares advice for cultivating a thriving home garden.
By Brittany AnasIt’s a common experience: After leaving The Broadmoor and admiring its beautiful grounds, you may find yourself inspired to enhance your own yard. From the more than 600 flowerpots blooming across the resort’s grounds to the airy, plant-filled Le Jardin Room at La Taverne, the impeccable landscaping complements the resort’s Mediterranean-inspired architecture.
Much of the landscaping magic happens on-site at The Broadmoor’s greenhouses, where staff members cultivate more than 200 varieties of flowers for the resort and its wilderness properties—tulips, daffodils, marigolds, petunias, geraniums, zinnias, and more. “We’re always one season ahead,” says Fred Dickman, Director of Golf Course Maintenance and Resort Grounds. “In July, we’re growing poinsettias.”
Here Dickman shares some of his best tips for creating thriving outdoor spaces at home:
Test Your Soil
The secret to growing beautiful flowers and thriving plants?
Having great soil, Dickman says. Every flower and plant has a pH range that it prefers. Most thrive in soil with pH levels between 6 and 7. For example, tulips need soil with a pH between 6 and 7 for their bell-shaped flowers to bloom, while marigolds, and their bright orange poms, are a little more laid-back, thriving in soils with pH levels between 5.5 and 7.5, according to the Old Farmer’s Almanac
Although pH soil test kits are available at local home stores, Dickman recommends obtaining a more comprehensive analysis of your soil’s nutrient composition, along with its pH, from a local nursery or cooperative extension. Once you have assessed your soil, you can determine the necessary steps to optimize it for the specific plants, trees, or flowers you intend to cultivate.
Go on a Plant Walk
Not all plants thrive in all growing zones. To give you an idea of what perennial plants will do best in your own yard, enter your zip code into the USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map. Dickman also recommends doing some on-the-ground research: Take a walk or drive around a historic neighborhood that’s near you and see what types of shrubs are thriving and that catch your eye. Use an app like PlantNet to aid in identification.
Plant in Varying Heights
When you walk the resort grounds, you’ll notice intentional layering within the landscaping, with graduations in height—from the manicured lawns to the flowers and shrubbery and, finally, largerscale canopies of trees. “It creates a great visual effect and adds contrast,” Dickman says.
Try Something New
Dickman has a few favorite flowers and shrubs. Roses make a big impact (but do beware, deer love them, too). Forsythias are a quick-growing option with vibrant yellow flowers that bloom in early spring. Lilacs not only enhance the beauty of your yard but also fill the air with a delightful fragrance. Dickman likes to place them near entrances so visitors are greeted by a subtle floral note.
For a more formal European look, consider parterre gardens —beds arranged in ornamental and symmetrical patterns. For an English countryside vibe, wildflowers are a charming choice.
In colder climates, evergreen shrubs can maintain visual interest even during the winter lull. Dickman particularly favors the Colorado blue spruce for its mix of greens, blues, and silvers.
Grow Your Own Herbs
Herbs are relatively easy to grow, as long as they’re in containers with proper drainage and receive sufficient sunlight. Dickman recommends cultivating oregano, basil, and cilantro indoors during the spring. Come summer, you can repot them and transfer them to your yard.
SAVOR
The Best of Everything
The Broadmoor’s culinary team cultivates a robust ecosystem of world-class ingredients to create unparalleled flavor.
By Callie SumlinThe Broadmoor’s Executive Chef, Justin Miller, oversees all things culinary on the property: That’s twenty restaurants, cafés, lounges, and bars; 315,000 square feet of banquet event space; eighteen kitchens; and more than 1,200 team members on the food and beverage staff.
But perhaps the most impressive component of the Forbes Five-Star, AAA Five-Diamond resort’s culinary program is the carefully orchestrated symphony conducted behind the scenes to ensure peak freshness, flavor, and sustainability. “I don’t think there’s any other resort that goes to the extent and efforts we are when it comes to amazing ingredients,” Miller says. “We’re bringing in the best of everything. From produce from our greenhouses and beef from our ranch to local produce from our community of small farmers to unique and incredible products from around the world.”
Whether it’s a high-end, contemporary meal at Summit, which recently earned a prestigious Forbes Four-Star rating, a Tuscaninspired feast at Ristorante del Lago, or a leisurely lunch at The Grille, guests can taste that dedication in every bite. From farm to fork and beyond, here’s a behind-the-scenes look at how Miller and his team have created a tightly contained and interconnected culinary ecosystem.
IN THE GARDENS The Produce
“I come from a small rural area where farming is woven in with the fabric of life,” Miller says. That connection to agriculture guides his dedication to local sourcing— which starts as close to home as it gets, with produce cultivated on-property at The Broadmoor’s greenhouses and gardens.
From fragrant, fresh herbs to juicy tomatoes, the chefs are hands-on in the greenhouses, growing good flavor from the ground up. Despite Colorado’s relatively short growing season, The Broadmoor’s greenhouses operate nearly year-round, with chefs harvesting radishes, turnips, lettuces, and more to use in the property’s restaurants. “There’s not much we have to do to such great ingredients,” Miller says. “We keep it simple and let the food shine.”
Beyond the resort’s borders, Broadmoor chefs also source the best from Colorado’s small farmers. “We are bringing in more fresh, seasonal items than ever: Palisade peaches, Olathe corn, Pueblo chiles,” Miller says. Given the size of the culinary program, The Broadmoor can purchase pallets of produce from local farmers, directly impacting the local economy and supporting the producers. From cultivated mushrooms to crisp asparagus to nutrient-dense microgreens, the culinary team considers every component of what makes it onto guests’ plates.

RESTAURANTS AND LOUNGES OF THE BROADMOOR
The Broadmoor Concierge is happy to make recommendations and reservations for any of our on-property restaurants. You can also make reservations online. Visit Broadmoor.com/dining or call (844) 508-6717 for dining reservations.
FROM THE RANCH The Proteins
Guests who have had the pleasure of tucking into a juicy steak at La Taverne or an expertly prepared beef crudo at Summit already know how delicious The Broadmoor’s Wagyu beef is. Raised exclusively for The Broadmoor at Eagles Nest Ranch, a 50,000-plus-acre ranch in northern Colorado, the cattle are the most genetically pure Wagyu herd in America, boasting 98 percent full-blooded heritage breeding. The cattle graze in open pastures—the same pastures that provide wildflower nectar and pollen for The Broadmoor’s Eagles Nest Ranch honeybees—and are fed a diet free of antibiotics and growth hormones. “The team at the ranch prides themselves on the quality of food that the cattle receive, and all of that yields the buttery-rich flavors that our guests enjoy,” Miller says.
SCAN THE CODE FOR INFORMATION AND DINING RESERVATIONS
The Broadmoor’s on-campus butchery program breaks these sustainably harvested animals down into gorgeously marbled hand-cut chops, steaks, and cuts for use in menus across the resort.
FARM-TO-FORK World-Class Products
From cultivating their own products to supporting artisanal farmers and producers from across the globe, no sourcing detail is too small for Chef Miller and his team. Take the resort’s honey program. Beekeeper KJ Tencza of Illuman Apiary has spent nearly a
decade tending to the resort’s hives. That signature honey, blended from honey harvests throughout the seasons, is integrated into countless applications and recipes throughout The Broadmoor, from cocktails to baked goods. Guests can also find jars of this sweet elixir for sale at Café Julie’s. “The honey is harvested here in Colorado from local fields, which is a benefit for nutrition and allergies and also offers a unique experience for our guests,” Miller says.
Then there are kitchen staples like olive oil. The Broadmoor has partnered with Castello di Ama, a small-production, 300-tree olive farm in Italy’s Tuscan hills, to source an exceptionally pure product. The resort goes through cases of this flavorful oil at Ristorante del Lago, along with other high-quality Italian imports, such as charcuterie and balsamic vinegar. From imported cheese to Valrhona chocolate, fragrant truffles to sustainably procured wild fish, The Broadmoor’s culinary team searches far and wide for the best.
Ask Chef Miller why he and his team go to such lengths to source their ingredients, and he will respond with one word: flavor. “Hands down, it all comes back to flavor. If you harvest a tomato in Mexico and ship it to Colorado, it’s green and sits in a warehouse. We’re in our greenhouse harvesting tomatoes at peak ripeness for use the same day. The sweetness and quality greatly impact the guests’ experience.”
Western Whiskey
At the intersection of rugged and refined resides celebrated Colorado Springs craft whiskey maker Distillery 291.
By Matthew SchniperIn his earlier life, Michael Myers was a jet-setting photographer shooting celebrities for magazines such as Vogue and Vanity Fair. Profoundly affected by the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, he left the glamorous world of New York fashion and beauty photography behind and headed West.
Myers relocated with his family from lower Manhattan, where they lived at the time, to Colorado Springs. He continued commuting for photography assignments and, on a flight home, read an article about the marketing professional who created Hendrick’s Gin. “If he can do it, why can’t I make whiskey?” Myers thought.
Myers read everything he could on the subject and watched copious YouTube videos. He enlisted his friend Mike Bristol, owner of Bristol Brewing, to teach him about brewing beer, a critical step in making whiskey. When Myers realized that even the smallest professional still cost tens of thousands of dollars, he drew on his mechanical drawing background to design his own. He engaged a welder to fashion copper photogravure plates from a past photography exhibit into a pot still. His past art would shape his new endeavor.
Myers didn’t intend to make anything akin to Kentucky bourbon or Tennessee whiskey. “I set out to make a Western whiskey,” he says. “Something big, bold, and beautiful, like the state of Colorado.”
Myers selected a yeast strain not typically used in making whiskies. He sourced malted rye and other grains more often used in brewing beer. He chose to add charred aspen wood staves to barrels of his aging whiskey to impart unique flavors. Myers named his distillery 291 Colorado Whiskey, after the number of his dorm room at the Savannah College of Art and Design and the Manhattan address of the world’s first gallery dedicated solely to photography.
Myers’s personal story also informs Distillery 291’s “rugged, refined, and rebellious” style, as its tagline states. Descended from Scottish, Irish, and English heritage, Myers was raised on his family’s horse farms in Georgia and Tennessee. “I used to play stuntman in the hayloft of my barn, falling into the hay bales,” he reminisces. He was also the only member of his family to saddle his horse Western style rather than English. In whiskey, as in life, Myers blazed his own path.
Others have taken notice. Shortly over a year after distilling his first batches inside a 300-square-foot workspace, his whiskies earned two Liquid Gold nods from the influential Jim Murray Whisky Bible. A string of awards and recognition followed.
“It’s about consistency,” Myers says of Distillery 291’s products, adding that each award signifies something special along the way. Although the distillery has grown into a much larger space and added to its staff, its bourbons, ryes, and other whiskies are still handcrafted using the same techniques and in a bold, Western style.
New in 2024, The Broadmoor has launched a single-barrel program, procuring private, single-barrel selections from major national distilleries. Barrels from Distillery 291 were some of the first chosen by Broadmoor VP of Food and Beverage David Patterson and his team. The bottles sport co-branded labels to highlight the collaboration, something that’s meaningful to Patterson who, as a Kentucky native, has “a strong affinity for the craft,” he says.
In February, 291 Colorado Whiskey was named Brand Innovator of the Year at the Icons of Whisky America Awards. The award specifically noted 291’s E Colorado Whiskey “Experimental” product line, demonstrating “a commitment to constant innovation and improvement,” as well as “relentless creativity and passion.”

MEET THE MAKER DINNER SERIES

Since then, the resort has hosted specially curated pairing dinners with Sazerac, Breckenridge Distillery, and Monte Bernardi winery. The ongoing series provides “an opportunity for us to showcase our partnerships for our guests at the hotel,” says David Patterson, The Broadmoor’s VP of Food and Beverage. “We spend a tremendous amount of time focused on procurement,” he says. The Scoop
Ice-cream-topped bubble waffles, available exclusively at Seven Falls, are the team’s latest confectionary creation.
By Matthew SchniperYou’ll undoubtedly encounter a variety of frozen treats during your stay at The Broadmoor—ice cream, gelato, sorbet, and more, available in an array of tempting flavors. All these delectables are crafted by The Broadmoor Creamery, the in-house kitchen
responsible for creating a diverse range of confections for every restaurant, café, lounge, and bar on the property, as well as for banquets. “In typical Broadmoor fashion, we do it all,” says David Patterson, The Broadmoor’s VP of Food and Beverage.
Play at The Broadmoor showcases classic American ice cream, while Café Julie’s and Ristorante del Lago are known for their gelato offerings. La Taverne features sorbets among its many dessert options.
Falling Waffles, a seasonal food cart located outside Restaurant 1858 at the base of Seven Falls, is the spot to experience The Broadmoor’s
newest creation—ice-cream-topped bubble waffles with enticing toppings. Patterson explains that these unique waffle cones, made with rice flour and boasting a crispy, crunchy exterior and chewy interior, originated as a popular street food in Hong Kong. “We’ve adapted them into a format that makes sense for sundaes,” he says.
Although guests can choose their own house-churned ice cream flavor, including vegan options, along with custom toppings and sauces, Patterson advises, “The best way to enjoy our bubble waffles is through the signature sundaes we created.” His top pick? The 1858 Gold Rush, a sweet-and-savory option made with vanilla bean ice cream topped with caramel popcorn, chocolate chips, and caramel sauce.
colorado famously boasts more than 300 days of sunshine annually. While the elevation also means that most days are temperate, there are stretches when the mercury climbs toward brow-mopping levels. Fortunately, The Broadmoor’s Concierge is happy to assist with information and booking details on the numerous ways to keep cool at the resort. Here are some of our favorites:
SOAR THROUGH THE SKY

It can snow any day of the year at the 14,115-foot summit of Pikes Peak, where temperatures are consistently about thirty degrees cooler than at the base. Take in the views from the Summit Visitor Center (and don’t miss the world-famous donuts) during a three-hour round-trip excursion on The Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway.
CAST A LINE INTO COOL WATERS
Fly fishing provides a perfect excuse to stand knee-deep in a cool mountain stream. Test the waters with a twohour introductory lesson at The Broadmoor Fish House, or opt for a half-day or fullday guided trip. For the ultimate experience, consider booking a stay at Fly Fishing Camp, The Broadmoor’s all-inclusive retreat situated along a private five-mile stretch of the Tarryall River.

PLAY Course Correction
Keeping The Broadmoor’s courses in championship shape requires a tightly orchestrated interplay of hands-on work and technological know-how.By Jon Rizzi
“Consistency,” Oscar Wilde once quipped, “is the last refuge of the unimaginative.” An occasional golfer, Wilde never played The Broadmoor, where achieving consistency of course conditions requires more imagination and technology than even he could have envisioned.
“It’s an oddball mountain property,” Fred Dickman, The Broadmoor’s Director of Golf Course Maintenance and Resort Grounds, says of the course he and his team are preparing for the 2025 U.S. Senior Open. “On the same day, you can have frost in one area and have it baking in another.” He understands that such variations matter little to golfers, whether professionals, club members, or resort guests. They expect consistency in fairway turf and bunker sand, and for putts to roll at the same speed in the sun or the shade.
Dickman, East and West Course Superintendent Michael Sartori, and Superintendents Scott Metz (East) and Kyle Schmidt (West) share those expectations and exceed them every day. Members of their fifty-person team—greenkeepers, irrigation specialists, horticulturists, equipment managers, and landscape workers—start their workdays at 5 a.m., with assignments dictated largely by information gleaned from observation and, increasingly, from data gathering.
“You get to know your property like a farmer knows his land,” Dickman says. “The art of greenkeeping is feel, vision, experience.”

GOLF AT THE BROADMOOR
The Broadmoor features two world-renowned golf courses—the West Course and the famed East Course, where many USGA championships have been decided. It also has a fully stocked golf shop with Callaway clubs, clothing, and available instruction. To book a tee time, schedule a lesson, or get more information, contact the Golf Pro Shop at (844) 508-6717
He knows, for example, the ideal particle size and shape of the sand that works best in the flatbottomed bunkers and how long to “spin it with a Sand Pro to fluff it just enough so you won’t get a ‘fried egg’ lie.” He also knows how low to mow greens without losing hole locations and which greens can and can’t take a roller.
In 2025, The Broadmoor will begin a phased installation of a new irrigation system and launch a restoration project to return forty-two acres of irrigated rough to native grasses.
Technology informs many maintenance practices. Just below the surface of the courses lie hundreds of sensors that relay soil temperature, moisture, and salinity readings to a terminal in the maintenance building. That data—integrated with information about relative humidity, evaporation rates, and dew points from The Broadmoor’s weather station—allows the team to manage more than 2,000 individually controlled sprinkler heads on the 300-acre facility.
In preparation for the 2025 U.S. Open, The Broadmoor and the USGA have started using a new technology called the GS3. The same size and shape as a golf ball, this “smart ball” collects more than 15,000 data points to measure green speed, smoothness, trueness, and firmness anywhere on the course.
The USGA successfully tested the GS3 at its 2023 championships, and The Broadmoor has been using the device since March. This will give Dickman and Sartori more than enough time to master it before the 45th U.S. Senior Open tees off at The Broadmoor June 26–29, 2025. The event will be the fourth USGA championship held at The Broadmoor since 2008 and the ninth overall. Experience—and meteorological data— show Colorado Springs has some of the most unpredictable weather in the state. “We have learned how much a course can change between morning and afternoon,” Dickman says, citing the hygrometric shifts at the 2008 U.S. Senior Open, 2011 U.S. Women’s Open, and the 2018 event. “We’re prepared for anything.”
During championship week, work will begin no later than 3:30 a.m. and may not end until 11 p.m. Working from a punch list created after the previous day’s round, Sartori gives the team of fifty its marching orders and dispatches them around the course.
Bunkers get spun, and green surrounds are trimmed. Per the USGA’s direction, the mowers always cut from tee to green, shaving the fairways to a half-inch. Teeing areas on most holes will be shifted from the previous day to provide different angles and yardages.
Every poa annua green gets double-cut and— except for the heavily contoured first, fourth, and eighth greens—rolled each day. Green speeds will roll about 12 percent faster than what members and resort guests typically face. The process is all carefully orchestrated. “We’ll go with the USGA and cut the cups about a half-hour to forty-five minutes after the guys have mowed and rolled the greens,” Dickman says.
Those hole placements are crucial to the par-70 course’s defense. Players in the last two U.S. Senior Opens here averaged 31.43 and 32.04 putts per round, and only ten players (three in 2008, seven in 2018) finished below par, the lowest being 2008 champion Eduardo Romero’s six-under 274.
When the last group tees off each day, a couple of members from the maintenance crew team will be right behind them, pulling the flagsticks to prevent them from becoming someone’s souvenir. When the final putt drops on Sunday, a celebration will follow, and then it’s back to business as usual. “The course gets stressed during the championship,” Dickman says, “and we have to have it ready for golf the morning after.”

BROADMOOR INVITATION
Insider Information
Competitors offer tips for playing well on the resort’s storied courses.
By Jon RizziEvery July, a hundred accomplished amateur golfers nationwide gather to compete in The Broadmoor Invitation—a tournament with roots dating back to 1921 and a prestigious list of champions, including World Golf Hall of Famers Lawson Little and Hale Irwin, as well as multiple PGA Tour champions.
“I love the history,” says Scott Beard, a two-time player from Trophy Club, Texas. “To be part of the tradition is such an appealing aspect of the tournament.” Like all invitees, Beard upholds this tradition as part of a two-man team in a flighted, scratch four-ball championship held over four days. The resort also offers activities for competitors’ guests, allowing Beard and partner Chris Goodspeed to “feel like pros” while their wives can play in a pickleball round-robin tournament, take a cooking class with a Broadmoor chef, or indulge in the resort’s other Forbes Five-Star, AAA Five-Diamond amenities. As Beard humorously notes, “They love it, and so do we—because we feel less guilty about playing.”
With many players returning annually, the competition has evolved into a friendly yet fierce contest, especially when tackling greens that Jack Nicklaus deemed more challenging than those at Augusta National. Inside information, such as the following, could enhance a player’s chances of leaving with a coveted blue winner’s jacket—and an invitation to return.
DON’T OVERCOMPENSATE FOR ELEVATION
“It’s a myth that all shots at The Broadmoor carry 15 percent farther than at sea level,” says Russ Miller, The Broadmoor’s Director of Golf. “Yes, a downmountain shot may travel 12 to 15 percent farther; however, a shot directly toward the mountain may carry closer to what it would at sea level.”
TAKE AN UPHILL APPROACH
“Set yourself up to leave the hole between your ball and the mountain, even if you wind up short-sided,” Beard says. “Otherwise, it’s a downhill putt that may not look that way—and can get away from you quickly.”
KEEP AN EYE ON THE SHRINE
“My first time there, the starter said putts would break away from the Will Rogers Shrine on Cheyenne Mountain,” says the event’s 2021 and 2022 champion Allen Schlup of Overland Park, Kansas. “Once you get a feel for it, it pays dividends.”
PLAY THE WEST COURSE
The Broadmoor’s East Course is famously challenging with its varied layout and unforgiving greens. But the West Course presents its own challenges. It features narrower fairways and more doglegs than its counterpart, making the course far more challenging off the tee.

SCORE ON THE FRONT, SURVIVE THE BACK
The front nine holes of the East Course offer the most favorable scoring opportunities. During the 2018 U.S. Senior Open, holes 1 through 9 averaged 1.44 shots over par for the championship, whereas holes 10 through 18 averaged 3.28 over par. Eight of the course’s ten toughest holes are on the back nine. The most formidable? The downhill, left-dogleg par-4 10th.
KEEP CALM AND PUTT ON
The putting surfaces on both courses defend par with frustrating regularity. “You’re going to have some bad putts,” Beard says. “A two-footer can turn into an eight-foot comebacker. An approach to a foot in front of the hole can slowly roll a hundred feet back to you. Have a short memory and be patient.”

On Top of Her Game
Colorado Golf Hall of Famer
Nancy Roth Syms is still honing her skills.
By Jon RizziOf the 154 inductees voted into the Colorado Golf Hall of Fame since 1973, fourteen have ties to The Broadmoor Golf Club. Only one continues to play there regularly. Now in her 80s, Nancy Roth Syms navigates the courses with grace, focusing on her short game as the years have tempered the power of her swing. “Up and down—that’s what saves you, especially with these greens!” she says.
Syms’s association with The Broadmoor began in 1968, when she and her husband, Billy, relocated to Colorado Springs. By then, her decorated amateur golf career already included multiple wins in prominent regional and national championships. Her prowess extended to international competition, contributing to triumphs as part of the 1964 and 1966 United States Curtis Cup teams against Great Britain and Ireland.
After missing the 1962 Curtis Cup, held at The Broadmoor, Syms reeled off five consecutive victories against strong fields in 1963 and qualified for a formidable 1964 U.S. squad, which retained the Cup with a victory at Royal Porthcawl in Wales. Syms considered turning pro until she “had the good fortune of marrying Billy” in 1965. His “sponsorship” allowed her to remain an amateur, competing on a third winning Curtis Cup team in 1976 and captaining another in 1980.
She also won prestigious tournaments like the 1972 and 1975 Broadmoor Ladies Invitation, then one of the premier women’s amateur golf events. In the 1975 championship match, she defeated future World Golf Hall of Famer Nancy Lopez. Syms earned medalist honors at that year’s U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship, and she won the British Ladies’ Amateur Golf Championship at The Old Course at St. Andrews—an accomplishment she calls the highlight of her career. “Billy caddied for me. He knew that course. He would walk it every morning. He knew exactly where I had to hit it,” recalls Syms, who lost her husband in 1992. Her display at the Colorado Golf Hall of Fame includes a photo of Syms holding the trophy at St. Andrews and another of her powering through a drive. “I’m amazed I was able to do that,” she says. “You don’t realize what you’re doing out there. You’re just trying to get the ball in the hole.”

Art of the Dink
Elevate your pickleball skills with these game-changing tactics.
By Tom WilmesPickleball is a popular sport with a silly name that’s seriously fun to play. With over 36.5 million players in the United States, it’s safe to assume that most people have some familiarity with the rules. The game begins with an underhanded serve into the opponents’ opposite square, and players then volley back and forth—known as “dinking”—taking care to avoid the novolley zone in front of the net called “the kitchen.” Only the serving team can score a point, and games are played to 11. A lesson with a Broadmoor pro is an excellent way to learn the ropes or take your game to the next level.

Understanding Aspens
• The name “aspen” comes from the Old English word “aespa,” which means “shaking tree.”
• Stands of aspen trees’ leaves turn gold simultaneously in the fall, as they are really one interconnected organism.
Explore Nearby Trails
• After large wildfires, aspens are usually the first tree species to colonize a burned area. They are also more resistant to fire than evergreens.
• Colorado is home to more aspen trees than anywhere else in the country.
From The Broadmoor’s campus, it’s an easy walk to North Cheyenne Canyon Park and Pike National Forest, where you’ll find multiple trails that meander through golden aspen groves. Once you’ve seen the aspens at higher elevations, take a short drive to the famous Garden of the Gods, where the hills surrounding the unique red rock formations are painted with a colorful fall palette scattered against a backdrop of evergreens.
• White-barked aspen trees reproduce through an interconnected root system, sending out new shoots that grow into trees.
• Once established, aspen trees can live 150 years or longer.

Not Quite Roughing It
A stay at The Broadmoor Ranch at Emerald Valley combines the destination resort’s world-class service, dining, and lodging with an authentic Western wilderness escape.
By Callie SumlinThe Broadmoor’s stunning Rocky Mountain scenery is a central feature of the resort. But for those looking to completely immerse themselves in an authentic Colorado wilderness setting—without sacrificing exceptional lodging and luxury—The Broadmoor’s Ranch at Emerald Valley beckons.
The all-inclusive experience begins on The Broadmoor’s main campus, where you check in and the friendly staff load your luggage into the back of a chauffeured SUV. The buildings on the resort’s main campus and its sparkling lake soon fade into the distance as the driver expertly navigates the twisting, turning dirt road that snakes up into the Pike National Forest.
The horse stables are the first clue you’ve arrived at The Ranch. A smiling staff member whisks your luggage to your cabin while another leads you to the Main Lodge, where glasses of lemonade and freshly baked, powdered sugar–dusted chocolate chip cookies await.
After the snack, the staff give you a tour of the Main Lodge. You take in the richly appointed dining room; the saloon-style bar, which looks out onto a patio with a sweeping view of two glittering blue ponds and forested hills; and a circular fire pit, where piping-hot cowboy coffee is served at sunrise.
With no more than thirty-two guests at any given time on the property, there’s a quiet, slow flow to life here. You can already feel your shoulders relax and your breath deepening. At 8,200 feet in elevation, the air up here is as unspoiled as the views.
You make your way to your cabin to rest before social hour. The accommodations are comfortably appointed yet authentic to the mountain environment. Your cozy cabin is outfitted with Western-themed art, a crackling gas fireplace with a pair of leather rocking chairs placed perfectly in front of it, and plush, handcrafted textiles. The door opens to a patio where you savor the fresh, clean air and listen to the birdsong.
After a quick refresh, you make your way to the Main Lodge for social hour. You belly up to the bar, where the bartender offers to shake up whatever you fancy, whether a craft cocktail or a time-tested classic. Perhaps you’d prefer a glass of wine or a Colorado-brewed craft beer?
You and the other guests are invited to take your seats in the spacious dining room, with dedicated table service for you and your group. You sink into a three-course menu of seasonal specialties prepared with peak-of-freshness ingredients. The most difficult part is deciding between entrées like a West Texas venison osso bucco, Alaskan halibut, or bison filet mignon.
After dessert and coffee, you don a plush robe and make your way to the cedar-lined hot tubs nestled into a grove of towering pine trees. As you soak your tired muscles, you gaze at the stars above, pointing out constellations and reveling in their clarity and number this far from the city.
You awake refreshed the following morning and take your time getting out of bed. There’s a nip to the morning air, but the bathroom’s heated floors keep you cozy as you prepare for the day.
You mosey over to the fire pit outside the Main Lodge and pour yourself a steaming cup of cowboy coffee in a blue-flecked mug, savoring the strong elixir as the sun bathes the valley in golden light. Inside the Main Lodge, you tuck into a beautifully arranged breakfast buffet, enjoying smoked trout, a rainbow of fresh fruit, fresh-baked pastries, biscuits and gravy, eggs, bacon, and sausage, before consulting with the Concierge to plan your itinerary for the day.
You’re feeling adventurous, so you opt to begin with horseback riding. At the stables, the expert ranch hands put even an inexperienced rider at ease, matching you with the perfect mount and assisting you into the saddle. Soon, you’re sauntering through lush, wildflower-studded meadows and aspen groves alongside a babbling brook, taking in the stunning scenery and assured by your horse’s steady, sure-footed gait.
After lunch in the dining room, you opt for some downtime relaxing outside your cabin before a fly fishing lesson. The knowledgeable instructor patiently teaches you to cast, and

100 Years of History
THE RANCH AT EMERALD VALLEY CELEBRATES ITS CENTENNIAL AS A MOUNTAIN RETREAT IN 2024
IN 1923, Broadmoor founder Spencer Penrose acquired the land that now houses The Ranch at Emerald Valley from the Colorado Springs Council of Girl Scouts of America, which had utilized it as a summer camp. Recognizing the property’s potential as a secluded wilderness retreat, Mr. Penrose established the Pikes Peak Camping & Mountain Trails Association, a subscription organization to enhance the property for personal use by himself and his associates.
they were also known for hosting lively parties at this mountain retreat.
IN 1942, El Pomar Foundation, responsible for managing the Penroses’ financial and philanthropic legacy following Mr. Penrose’s death, donated Camp Vigil to the city of Colorado Springs, which repurposed it as a youth camp. Four years later, a Texan acquired the property and named it Emerald Valley Ranch.
IN 2012, The Broadmoor’s ownership brought the site back under its umbrella, intending to reimagine Mr. Penrose’s original vision with contemporary amenities and luxurious standards. Presentday guests at the all-inclusive Ranch at Emerald Valley can still locate the spot where Mr. Penrose’s original cabin stood, marked by a plaque on the property. They can also partake in the timeless traditions of relaxation, socialization, and adventure in a pristine mountain setting. you eventually reel in a few rainbow trout from the pond, feeling victorious.
Tonight’s dining experience is one of The Ranch’s legendary cookouts—as they do every Wednesday and Saturday evening. The buffet-style meal hearkens back to the decadent hospitality of Broadmoor founder Spencer Penrose, with tempting delicacies like lobster tails, prime rib, trout, fried chicken, and homemade cobbler for dessert. Somehow, you save room to toast a few marshmallows for s’mores around the fire pit before retiring for the evening.
The weather is perfect the following morning. You opt for a hike, and your guide regales you with tales of the valley’s history as they drive you to the Grayback Peak trailhead. The challenging ascent is worth it for panoramic views at the summit.
After a three-course lunch, your afternoon is wide open. Will you play some lawn games? Take an archery lesson? Explore the pond via canoe or kayak? Or maybe you’ll lounge in a hammock with a book or challenge your companions to a game of Scrabble in the lodge.
Whether you’re in the mood for adventure or leisure, you know The Ranch will provide.
IN 1924, a newly constructed clubhouse and private cabins were completed, along with the introduction of electricity, a phone line, and water and septic systems. Mr. Penrose named the site Camp Vigil (“Ve-heel”) after a nearby peak. While Mr. Penrose, along with figures like entrepreneur Claude Boettcher, banker Carl Pforzheimer, and oil magnate Henry Blackmer, and their families found solace and relaxation at Camp Vigil during the summers,
At a Natural Pace
A mother and her two children discover adventure and quiet contentment at The Broadmoor’s all-inclusive Cloud Camp.
By Rebecca TreonI stood face to face with the mule who would be my ride the rest of the way to Cloud Camp, feeling a bit skeptical. Guests arriving at the all-inclusive wilderness retreat check in at the resort’s main campus and are driven up a winding forest road traversing a steep flank of Cheyenne Mountain to the camp, nestled into its forested summit. Upon reaching the stables just past Will Rogers Shrine of the Sun, guests have a choice: Continue to Cloud Camp in chauffeured comfort or ride the rest of the way on the back of a mule. While my 15-year-old son was decidedly anti-mule and opted to stay in the shuttle, my 11-year-old daughter couldn’t pass up the opportunity. This meant Mom was along for the ride, too.
While I had experience with trail rides on horses, I had never been astride a mule. Fortunately, the mules were familiar with the route, and despite their tendency to walk along the outer edge of the dirt road, our guide’s expertise provided reassurance. I settled into the peaceful pace—much slower than fleeting glimpses from a car window—and took in the beauty around me. It was a full-on Colorado fall and the final weekend of Cloud Camp’s season. Quaking aspen trees gleamed with yellow leaves in the crisp, mid-October morning. The fragrant scent of pine trees was like a natural balm after a harried workweek.
Cloud Camp’s friendly and attentive staff greeted us with refreshing glasses of blueberry lemonade upon
arrival—a dizzying 9,200 feet above sea level. Our chaps-wearing trail guide even gifted my daughter a horseshoe as a memento. It now hangs above our back door.
The camp’s resident manager showed us to our cabin, where our luggage had already been delivered. The trim log-and-mortar cabin looked like it had always been there, tucked among the trees. A rustic-luxe vibe carried through to the inside, with comfortable hewn-log furniture, Western art, and Southwest-style coverlets on the comfy beds. I peeked into the bathroom and noticed plush robes, cozy slippers, and upscale toiletries. It seemed every detail was accounted for. “Where’s the TV?” my kids asked.
It’s true. Tube time is a staple during most of our hotel stays, where microwaved popcorn and a movie in bed are typical highlights. I had a moment of panic: Would my kids (and my patience) endure an electronics-free weekend?
After settling in, we decided to check out Cloud Camp’s Main Lodge. We learned that the 8,500-squarefoot building, influenced by American National Park–style architecture, stands on the original stone foundation that once supported a lodge built by Broadmoor founders Spencer and Julie Penrose. In the 1920s and ’30s, Mr. and Mrs. Penrose used the location as a mountain retreat for their friends and family, hosting lavish dinner parties and soirees. Perhaps a few days of uninterrupted togetherness would prove as beneficial for us as it did for them.
We marvel at the panoramic views of Pikes Peak and Colorado Springs from the expansive wraparound porch before stepping into the lodge. The main space is flanked by two enormous stone fireplaces, each ablaze with a roaring fire. Comfortable couches and chairs are arranged around the spacious room, with drinks and trays of snacks laid out for an afternoon nibble.
My kids gravitate to a checkerboard table. To my surprise, they play for over an hour, which never happens at home. Meanwhile, I check out the lodge’s stunning art. I majored in art history in college and have always loved Indigenous and Western art. The collection at Cloud Camp is like nothing I’ve ever seen. The walls are adorned with Navajo rugs, intricately beaded buckskin moccasins and clothing, an array of antique spurs, taxidermy mounts, Western tack, and even a stuffed black bear. Glancing upward, I notice that panels in the soaring ceiling are painted with Native American imagery—each representing one of the thirteen indigenous Western tribes. I recognize the names of Western masters among the artwork, including Remington, Russell, Schreyvogel, Sharp, and McGrew.
As evening falls, the lodge buzzes with pre-dinner activity. We take a moment to give Cloud Camp’s resident pup some belly rubs before making our way to the porch for the flag-lowering ceremony and playing of “America the Beautiful,” whose lyrics were inspired by author Katherine Lee Bates’s visit to the area and a trip up Pikes Peak.
One of the most stressful aspects of trip planning, at least for me, is coordinating where to eat and making reservations. Even though my kids aren’t in booster seats anymore, I still need to choose a place that serves something they’ll actually eat. At Cloud Camp, that worry is off the table.
Dinner at Cloud Camp, a four-course meal served at a large communal table, is as much about getting to know your fellow guests and making new friends as it is about the excellent (and abundant) food. Although there weren’t any other kids there that weekend, it provided valuable practice for my kids to engage in polite conversation with new acquaintances during
dinner. We chatted with a Texan couple who had recently moved to Colorado, a retiree who made Cloud Camp a relaxing retreat each summer, and a couple from Tennessee who got engaged that weekend. While the conversation mostly revolved around small talk, connecting with people we might never otherwise encounter in our day-to-day lives was wonderful.
By the next morning, I was more relaxed than I’d been in months. In less than a day, my kids and I felt like we had shifted into “leave the world behind” mode. Time slowed down, and there was no urgency. We slept in, and then headed for the Lodge for a leisurely buffet breakfast: eggs, bacon, potatoes, pastries, fresh fruit, yogurt, and on and on.
We explored the woods and hiked to the flagpole, enjoying the sweeping view. After lunch, I read by the fire while the kids engaged in crafts. Later, as I relaxed in the sun on a rocker on the porch, I could hear laughter and chatter as my kids played lawn games in the yard below.
At Cloud Camp, you can be as busy or as still as you’d like. Daily options include exploring the mountain by mule, participating in a yoga class, hiking through the woods, taking an archery lesson, joining a cooking or cocktail-making class, playing high-altitude pickleball, soaking in a hot tub, or simply relaxing in one of the hammocks hanging among the trees.
After dark, under a blanket of stars, the outdoor fire pit is an ideal spot for s’mores and conversation. Cozying up on a bench, we watched the flames with fellow Cloud Campers, alternating between chatting and sitting in contemplative quiet. My kids and I were drawn together by staring at a campfire instead of a
screen. I love that by making time to disconnect from the regular world, we found ways to connect with one another.
I think this is why Cloud Camp appeals to guests of all ages and interests, whether as a romantic retreat for couples, a short family getaway, a multigenerational trip, or even an intimate wedding weekend or family reunion.
I know my kids get it. A few months after our trip, I asked them what they liked best about our stay. Their answers? Hiking, being in the woods, and enjoying the peace and quiet. I know what you mean, kiddos. Before bedtime, I like to listen to guided meditations. One of my favorites encourages visualizing a tranquil cabin in the woods. In my mind, Cloud Camp is just a thought away, allowing me to immerse myself in that serene feeling as I drift off to sleep.

Fish On
Four essential skills anglers learn at Fly Fishing Camp.
By Brittany AnasFrom selecting the right fly to entice a fish to bite to executing a gracefully arcing line during a cast, fly fishing demands a considerable amount of technique. However, the moment you successfully land your first trout, the payoff becomes apparent. The sport of fly fishing also comes with builtin serenity—from the ripples of the river to the silhouette of mountains in the backdrop to the almost meditative act of casting.
For those intrigued by the sport or seeking to refine their skills, The Broadmoor’s skilled fly fishing guides offer lessons, excursions, and even multiday overnight experiences at its Orvisendorsed Fly Fishing Camp. Just a seventy-fiveminute drive from the main resort, the camp spans a private five-mile stretch along the Tarryall River, teeming with wild brown, brook, cutthroat, and rainbow trout.
Over an afternoon or over a few days, guides can assist you in mastering the fundamentals of fly fishing. The beauty of this fast-growing sport is that you’ll learn new things nearly every time you get out on a river.
Randy Babas, The Broadmoor’s Fly Fishing Manager, has been fishing in the Colorado Springs area since his childhood. Here he shares some of the foundational elements of fly fishing to get the most from the sport.
Perfect Your Cast
Casting a fly rod might appear intimidating, but Babas affirms that it’s easier than it looks. Usually, newcomers to the sport can grasp this fundamental skill in less than an hour. “I tell people, ‘You don’t have to look like Brad Pitt in A River Runs Through It,” Babas says. “I describe casting like swinging a hammer.”
Broadmoor guides typically teach this skill on the water so they can model techniques and help improve your cast in a real-life setting. At home, you can further refine your casting skills by attending workshops at your local fly shop or watching free instructional videos from Orvis’s casting instructor Pete Kutzer.
Match the Hatch
Guide Robert Younghanz, affectionately known as the “Bug Guy,” is highly regarded for his ability to identify thousands of insects.
However, when you’re just starting out, Babas suggests you don’t have to delve too deeply into the science of bugs. Instead, flip over a rock in or near the river and observe what’s crawling around. Then select a fly that resembles what you saw under the rock—for example, a fly that’s the same color and size.
The way Babas describes it: If you’re sitting down and a conveyor belt of food is coming by, you’re going to grab at what you know and like. “Fish have the same mentality,” he says. “If they don’t know what it is, they’ll let it float by.”
Read the Water
Don’t just jump in the water and start fishing. Instead, sit and watch the water for about ten to fifteen minutes, Babas advises. You’ll start to notice patterns and identify areas where fish are likely hiding out, whether it’s behind a log or around rocks.
When you go fly fishing with The Broadmoor, the team will supply you with all the necessary equipment and gear, including boots and waders. However, make sure to pack a pair of polarized sunglasses because they’ll enhance your ability to spot fish, even allowing you to see their shadows on the riverbed, Babas suggests.

The Orvis-endorsed, all-inclusive Fly Fishing Camp is available for overnight stays, family reunions, and meeting retreats from May through October. All equipment is provided. Visit Broadmoor.com or call (844) 508-6717 for information and reservations.
Get Your Fish Pic
Catching your first fish is thrilling, and you’ll likely want a photo holding your trout, not just for bragging rights but also to maintain a photographic record of the types of fish you catch while out on the water.
To do this correctly, you must have wet hands, so dunk them in the river water. Then you’ll pick up your fish from the net underneath its belly and tail, being careful not to squeeze it, advises Babas. Your guide will be prepared to capture the shot swiftly so you can return your fish to the water within ten seconds or so. Pro tip: Hold your fish out toward the camera to accentuate its size.
From Every Angle
The Broadmoor and Orvis have teamed up to empower more women to get hooked on fly fishing.
By Brittany AnasOrvis is among the major players in encouraging more women to engage in the sport of fly fishing. The sporting company started its 50/50 on the Water initiative in 2016 to increase gender parity in fly fishing. The company spent the first two years listening to women anglers, hiring facilitators, and holding focus groups to better understand how to break down barriers to entry, says Laura Schaffer, vice president of conservation and sustainability with Orvis.
The initiative, made public in 2018, introduced better-fitting, highperformance waders, boots, and apparel for female anglers, along with classes at select retail stores, increased representation of women in its marketing, and support for nonprofits like All Girls Fish and SheJumps.
Female participation in the sport grew from 16 million to 19.8 million from 2012 to 2022, according to the most recent Recreational Boating & Fishing Foundation report.
The Broadmoor partners with Orvis for its women-only “These Boots are Made for Wading” weekends at Fly Fishing Camp, offering guided fly fishing clinics, dry land casting clinics, fly tying classes, workshops, wine tastings, self-guided hikes, and cooking demonstrations.
JUNE 7–8 AND JULY 19–20, 2024
Catering to anglers of every skill level and endorsed by Orvis, this female-only retreat encourages more women to embrace and relish the rewarding sport of fly fishing. The all-inclusive package includes a two-night stay at Fly Fishing Camp, all necessary gear, clinics and instruction, wine tastings, and more. It’s priced at $2,500 for single occupancy or $2,800 for double occupancy (plus applicable service charges and taxes). Visit Broadmoor.com for information.
“As part of our Orvis-endorsed fly fishing network, The Broadmoor provides trusted teaching for new anglers as well as veterans,” Schaffer says. “Our goal is that the experience will create an angler for life. And when you love fly fishing, you learn to love the ecosystems where fish thrive, and then you want to protect them.”

Let’s Make a Big To-Do
From exquisite weddings to intimate family celebrations, The Broadmoor’s events team helps create big impressions and memorable moments.
By Julie BielenbergFrom celebrity weddings to Colorado-inspired corporate functions, The Broadmoor’s conference and catering department creates thousands of events annually, and no request is too outrageous.
“We are challenged every day to design experiences that reflect our mountain destination as well as our classic elegance,” says Pierre Stone, the resort’s Director of Conferences and Catering. “Fresh concepts, colors, culinary delights, and surprises captivate our repeat guests.”
John Tobey, owner of John Tobey Events, is always thrilled when clients request The Broadmoor as their preferred location. “I’ve been planning events professionally at The Broadmoor since 2014, but my family has been guests since the 1950s, so my family history is steeped in all things Broadmoor,” Tobey says. He has worked with The Broadmoor’s team to plan an array of different types of celebrations throughout the resort. Here are a few ideas and inspiration for planning an event at The Broadmoor.
The Sky Is the Limit
Tobey fondly recalls a magical wedding weekend hosted by a Colorado couple who bought out The Broadmoor’s all-inclusive Cloud Camp for their big event. “They wanted an absolutely breathtaking, intimate, and exclusive venue,” Tobey says. Guests enjoyed mule rides, archery, hiking, and the outdoor hot tubs. The wedding ceremony was held on a large deck with panoramic views of the surrounding mountains as a backdrop.
A culinary “wow” moment occurred just after a multicourse dinner in Cloud Camp’s Main Lodge when The Broadmoor’s Executive Pastry Chef presented a Cloud Camp–themed wedding cake, complete with claw marks and a dollop of frosting on the nose of the Lodge’s resident taxidermized bear. “It made for a memorable and photographable moment for the couple,” Tobey says.
Sports, Spa, and Soirees
A day on one of The Broadmoor’s two golf courses, an afternoon in its Forbes Five-Star spa, learning to play pickleball or fly fish—the resort offers an array of all-season activities for guests. “With recreation being such an important part of our stays, we perfectly pair party food with the golf tournaments and healthy, mindful munchies for our spa enthusiasts as we create a thoughtful day retreat for our guests,” says Stone. Stone’s team can even create a themed luncheon or a fun, participatory event for your group. “Playful pickleball tournaments are always a hit with thirst-quenching canned cocktails and the iconic jar of pickles as an appropriate trophy for a fun day on the courts.”
Channel Your Inner Gatsby
Tobey has an idea for a stunning spectacle at The Broadmoor Estate House, a grand 12,000-square-foot, five-bedroom private residence on The Broadmoor’s main campus. “I’d love to plan a Great Gatsby–themed extravaganza at the Estate House, with guests arriving on the social lawn playing croquet. They’re offered a coupe of Champagne from a glass pyramid, and live music playing in the Grand Salon,” he says. “From ladies in flapperera dresses to dapper tux-clad gentlemen, I think this could be an event for the ages.”

There’s something about those two words on my calendar that look as heavenly as a doubledecker ice cream sundae: Girls’ Getaway! It feels decadent and delicious, almost too good to be true. And yet here we are, my best friend and I, ready to take off on a weekend away with nothing but time and adventure ahead.
Girls, Uninterrupted
Two former college roommates press pause on their busy daily lives to enjoy the ultimate girlfriends’ getaway at The Broadmoor.
By Meghan RabbittFRIDAY.
3 p.m. We hop into Jill’s minivan to make the hour-and-a-half drive from Boulder, Colorado, to The Broadmoor. There’s a hint of urgency not usually present in my laid-back friend. She toots the horn as we back out of her driveway, we wave dramatically to her 6-year-old daughter and 8-year-old son, and after we make the turn out of Jill’s neighborhood, she practically squeals, “Oh my goodness! Nobody got sick! No surprises came up! We are on our way!” Jill has been counting down the days to our girls’ getaway for the past month. With two littles and a brand-new puppy at home, this trip is a well-timed break. The same is true for me. I’m writing a book and my deadline is quickly approaching. The thought of an entire weekend spent catching up with my best friend in the lap of Broadmoor luxury feels like a gift.
7 p.m. After an easy check-in, we get settled and change for dinner. I glance at Jill putting on makeup as I apply my own mascara and I flash back to our years as roommates in college, getting ready to go out to parties. That was thirty years ago, and a lot of life has happened since then: jobs, relationships, marriages, babies, the death of Jill’s mom a couple of years ago. And yet we talk and laugh like we’re still those bright-eyed 18-year-old girls.
The snow is coming down harder as we walk around the corner to the Bee, an authentic 19th-century English pub. We doff our jackets and the host playfully throws embroidered bee stickers onto our shirts—a happy-making tradition at this historic spot. We choose seats at the bar and, yes, we do sing along as a fantastic musician plays one classic tune after another on an old-timey piano.
10:30 p.m. Jill and I are downright giddy walking back to our room, kicking fluffy Colorado snow into the air as we continue to chat and laugh. I feel so much gratitude for this time we get to spend together. Within minutes of our heads hitting our respective down feather pillows, we are sound asleep.
SATURDAY.
From the window of our mountainview room with two queen-sized beds, we watch as plump flakes of snow begin to fall. We grab oversized green umbrellas for the short walk from our room in Broadmoor West to Summit, a contemporary American restaurant with a sommelier-led world wine and cocktail program. Our server points us in the direction of not-to-be-missed dishes: the Summit Ceviche Trio, the Wagyu beef from Eagles Nest Ranch, and the tenderloin. We clink our perfectly paired glasses of wine and enjoy every delicious morsel of our first meal of the weekend.
9 p.m. “Where to next?” our server asks us as we take our last bites of the Chocolate Royale we ordered to share—a decadent chocolate mousse cake with caramel and Chantilly cream. When we meet for dinner in Boulder, there are kids and husbands to get home to. Tonight? Nothing but big, comfortable beds to spread out like a starfish in. “Where should we go next?” Jill asks. “There’s a sing-along at The Golden Bee every night—you’ll love it,” our server replies.
7 a.m. My iPhone’s alarm jolts me awake. Jill sits up and smiles. “It’s not a small child making a request for food!” she says with a laugh. We order coffees to go at Natural Epicurean and walk over to the racquet facility for our 8 o’clock pickleball lesson. Christopher, one of The Broadmoor’s world-class pros, greets us and leads us to the court. Before we know it, we’re “dinking” like champs (or so Christopher tells us), serving, and learning everything we need to know about what can and cannot happen in the no-volley zone near the net—a.k.a. the “kitchen.” Heads full of pickleball rules and tips, we leave the lesson plotting where and when we’ll play when we’re back in Boulder.
10:30 a.m. We swing by Café Julie’s on our way back to our room for a delicious breakfast of freshly baked goodies (an almond croissant for Jill, a bran muffin for me, and a chocolate chip cookie to split). The plan: Change into bathing suits and head to the hot tub. Yet when we get back to the room, we instead plop back into our beds and nap for two blissful, uninterrupted hours.
2 p.m. We head over to the spa a few hours before our 4 p.m. appointments to take full advantage of the Forbes Five-Star facilities. Jill and I proceed to participate in what I like to call a tribathlon: sauna, steam, cold shower, repeat. It’s a lot more relaxing than the swim-bike-run events of a triathlon— so relaxing, in fact, that I start to nod off (yes, again!) minutes after sinking into one of the Mountain View Room’s oversized loungers.
Nina, the esthetician who’ll do my Timeless Facial, gently nudges me awake and leads me to a treatment room where she proceeds to give me a hydrating and restorative facial with the best face massage of my life. When I meet up with Jill in the waiting room after her Signature Massage, she looks just as relaxed and cared for as I feel.
6 p.m. Walking across the bridge over Cheyenne Lake to Ristorante del Lago, the mountain backdrop glowing in the gathering dusk, Jill and I are thinking the same thing: How lucky are we? We tuck into the most delicious food—Prosciutto di Parma and Buffalo mozzarella
imported from Italy, freshly baked bread dipped in a delicate, peppery olive oil, a wood-fired pizza, and fresh pasta made in-house—and our conversation keeps circling around gratitude. We’re grateful for this uninterrupted time together at this amazing resort. We’re grateful for the ease we each feel in our friendship. Scheduling a few days away from our busy lives wasn’t easy, but the payoff is huge.
8 p.m. After our last few bites of Ristorante del Lago’s cannoli (a must, no matter how full you feel after dinner), we stroll over to Play for a couple of games of bowling and one of their famous “adult milkshakes”—a Bailey’s-spiked chocolate concoction that somehow makes the private-feeling bowling alley feel even more special. We laugh our way through each frame, playfully poking fun at each other. “You haven’t knocked down a pin in a while, Jill, you want the kid bumpers up?” “Meg, you need the bowling ball ramp so you don’t throw your back out?” We’re still laughing as we walk back to our room, feeling both energized and exhausted at the same time.
SUNDAY.
8 a.m. My alarm goes off and Jill and I happily jump out of bed after nine hours of uninterrupted sleep. We get ready for our semi-private “Get Fit for Tennis” class—a 50-minute session filled with footwork drills and some hitting, all set to music. We’re greeted by Christopher again, who jokes around with us like we’ve known him for years.
While the tennis sounds like sweatinducing fun, we’re the only ones who’ve showed up for class—so we float the idea of another pickleball session past Christopher. We’re officially hooked on America’s new favorite pastime. He smiles broadly and quickly swaps out tennis racquets for pickleball paddles. We’re soon working on more skills and even playing a few games.
11 a.m. While we’ve heard the brunch at the Lake Terrace Dining Room is outstanding, we vow to make that happen during our next girls’ weekend at The Broadmoor (which we’re already plotting!) and instead opt for in-room dining. The thought of having a stack of blueberry pancakes (me) and a smothered green chili breakfast burrito (Jill) while still in our plush robes feels too luxurious to pass up.
1:30 p.m. We reluctantly pack up, check out, and drive to the quaint nearby town of Manitou Springs, where we board the historic, iconic Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway. In operation since 1891, the railway underwent a $100 million–plus renovation in 2021. It’s still the highest cog railway in the world. The roughly three-hour round-trip journey to the top of America’s Mountain is the perfect end to a great weekend. Jill and I sit across from each other next to a large picture window, and our conversation flows as we slowly climb to the top of the 14,115foot mountain, enjoying breathtaking views along the way. From the top, it’s easy to see how the opening lines of what
would become the song “America the Beautiful” first struck poet Katharine Lee Bates in this very spot.
On our way down the mountain, we snap a selfie that might be my new favorite picture of me and Jill. We’re not dressed up. We’re not wearing makeup. We didn’t even frame the shot to showcase the idyllic mountain vista behind us. But we do emanate the kind of contentment that comes after spending a weekend in a magical spot, reliving past memories and making new ones.

Teaching the Art of Hospitality
Through Broadmoor University, employees can access best-in-class instruction that supports long-term career growth.
By Tom WilmesHospitality is a subtle art. It isn’t one skill, per se, but countless small gestures and considerations woven together to create an unforgettable experience. A friendly greeting with eye contact when passing, a door that’s whisked open upon approach, a server anticipating a diner’s needs before they even ask—at The Broadmoor, guests may not consciously notice every minute detail, but they undoubtedly feel the warm and welcoming environment that envelops them from the moment of arrival to when it’s time to say farewell.
“Visiting The Broadmoor has always been about thousands of small interactions that add up to be an experience,” says Broadmoor President and CEO Jack Damioli. “It’s a commitment to our guests and a commitment to quality and excellence that now spans 106 years and counting.”
A cornerstone of this commitment—and a primary factor in The Broadmoor annually maintaining its prestigious status as
the longest-running Forbes Five-Star and AAA Five-Diamond resort in the world—are the hundreds of staff members who comprise The Broadmoor family. From the grounds department to the kitchens and dining rooms, maintenance experts, cleaning staff, and events team to front-of-house employees and a host of behind-the-scenes professionals who support the entire enterprise, everyone plays a critical role in the resort’s continued success.
Supporting this mission and employees’ professional development is a program known as Broadmoor University. Unique in the hospitality industry, Broadmoor University is a comprehensive curriculum of essential knowledge and best
practices organized across various learning tracks. The program seamlessly integrates in-person classroom sessions and online learning, offering defined career tracks and advancement opportunities. It also fosters continuous growth while demystifying the path to success, and empowers individuals to envision long-term careers in hospitality.
“We like to think of it as a modern approach to the age-old art of hospitality,” says Rafael Muciño, Broadmoor University’s Senior Program Manager. “We’re using both in-person and remote experiences to allow people to learn in their most productive environment.”
New employees are “enrolled” in Broadmoor University the day they arrive on The Broadmoor’s campus for orientation. That’s when Muciño introduces himself and the program and invites new hires to log on and explore the various learning tracks.
“It isn’t just about The Broadmoor,” Muciño says. “The curriculum cultivates a mindset and outlines a path that employees can use in their everyday life.”
“Leadership Essentials” is one of the learning paths an employee may pursue. It begins with an instructor-led session to introduce essential concepts, followed by online microlearning sessions that expand and build on those concepts. The course concludes with an instructor-led session that ties it all together.
“If an employee expresses an interest in becoming a supervisor or a manager, rather than just saying, ‘Well, wait until a job is open and apply,’ they can begin to learn and develop those skills,” Muciño says.
The flexibility and opportunities afforded by The Broadmoor University program are also beneficial in recruiting and nurturing talent and helping current and future employees visualize potential career paths.
“Our most senior employee, Shona, has an incredible 65 years of service with the resort,” says Mr. Damioli. “Her daughter has already retired from The Broadmoor after 35 years of service!
“That type of commitment and opportunity now exists in a more transparent way with the new and improved Broadmoor University,” he says. “It’s an important tool to help us recruit, retain, and promote the next generation of employee leaders. We also need to reward and show appreciation for that talent. That’s part of the culture here at The Broadmoor and has been for years.”
“We
Part of that recognition, “Evening of the Stars,” is a long-standing tradition at the resort. The annual banquet recognizes employees with at least five years of service and each milestone thereafter in increments of five—all the way up to Shona Medina’s 65 years—with a red-carpet welcome and an overnight stay for themselves and a guest. This year, the resort honored 105 individuals during the event. A similar event in the fall recognizes returning seasonal employees.
“All of these individuals care so much about The Broadmoor and our guests and their co-workers,” Mr. Damioli says. “That’s what makes this place so special. We are a family, and we will go to every length to support and further that legacy of exceptional service.”
We have the team and equipment on-site at The Broadmoor to handle your event, no matter the scale or complexity.
Whether you are planning a board meeting, breakout meeting or require full event production we have the expertise and experience to make your event a success. From setup & teardown to concept & creative we are here to make your event exceptional.

Race divisions include purposebuilt racecars, GT4 cars, two and four-wheel drive vehicles, and open wheel sprinters and buggies.

SEA ISLAND
THE SPORTING LIFE
Enjoy the only Forbes Five-Star resort with a true Southern sporting club experience.
Carved from the grounds of one of the nation’s oldest hunt clubs, Broadfield Sporting Club & Lodge is a private hunting and fishing compound situated on 5,800 acres. It offers a variety of activities, including sporting clays, rifle and pistol ranges, quail hunting, pheasant shooting, and freshwater fishing on two lakes stocked with bass and bream.
For non-Broadfield members, access to the club is an amenity exclusively reserved for Sea Island guests. Those who have booked the resort’s “Broadfield Experience” are transported from their Forbes Five-Star accommodations and granted entry to the club’s private grounds. “Whether they come out for the day or a half day, Sea Island guests are introduced to the facility with a Lodge and Garden tour before being whisked off in a bird buggy for dog training, falconry demonstrations, and a fivestand shooting lesson,” says Broadfield Manager Lee Barber.
What sets this retreat apart from most other sporting clubs, however, is its exhilarating falconry program. Equipped with a leather glove, Sea Island guests literally join in the hunt with their arms wide open. Says Barber: “It’s like theater in the round to watch our peregrine falcons—the world’s fastest animal— come crashing down on their prey at speeds as high as 250 miles per hour.”

LOOKING GLASS
The Olmsted Influence
The Broadmoor’s original landscape architects created a harmonious and timeless design.
By Tom WilmesStrolling through The Broadmoor’s meticulously landscaped grounds reveals a harmonious blend of symmetrical gardens adorned with elegant fountains and other features, all meticulously planned by the original designers, the Olmsted brothers.
Frederick Law Olmsted Sr., who designed New York’s Central Park, stands as America’s most prominent landscape architect. Following his retirement, his sons, John Charles Olmsted and Frederick Law Olmsted Jr., continued on with an impressive portfolio of projects, including commissions from the National Park Service and American universities, including Harvard Business School and the University of Chicago.
At The Broadmoor—then essentially open fields—they utilized native grasses, flowers, and trees to create elaborate gardens and walkways that enhanced and unified the resort and its surroundings. The Olmsted brothers also designed features like filigreed metal lampposts, ornate fountains, and grandstands for the resort’s polo fields. Guests today will surely appreciate their influence in the sunken garden outside Broadmoor Main, planted with Japanese lilies, Shasta daisies, Madonna lilies, phlox, and tufted pansies.
