Ijust love the gift of giving!

Whether that’s buying physical gifts or doing something nice for someone, it just feels nice to give!

I absolutely love unwrapping a gift, bought just for me by someone who loves me enough to make the effort to buy it in the first place.

I love the joy of seeing my nine-year-old son open his gifts on Christmas morning. It makes the manic lead up to squeezing in Christmas shopping during lunch times all worth it.

I love that my family comes together for Christmas lunch with beers, cheers and lots of laughs around the table, with my mum’s traditional Christmas ham as the centrepiece. She was handed down the glaze recipe from my Nana and it makes Christmas that much more special.

However, there is one big bit of giving that I am extremely thankful for this month that I’d like to share with our readers.

My husband recently lost his mum to cancer and the lead up to her passing was brutal for everyone involved.

While we had the support of family in Hervey Bay and Gympie, I was also so blessed to have my brother, sister-in-law and niece who left their lives in Brisbane, twice, to come and be by our sides.

They cooked us dinner, did the grocery shopping, cleaned my house, washed our clothes, did school pick-up and so much more.

We would have been absolutely lost without them and I’m so thankful that I have family who are willing to drop everything to make sure that we are OK! That kind of giving is absolutely priceless.

I would also like to take the opportunity to thank our very special columnists who give up their time to put their creativity on paper each month for our readers.

We are blessed to have such a vibrant and versatile team and we look forward to seeing what wonderful stories will come to life in 2023.

To all our readers, the team and I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a cracker of a year in 2023!

Bring it on!

MURAL OF THE MONTH - MARYBOROUGH MURAL TRAIL

WORLD PEACE MURAL

In a time of world conflict about race, sex and religion the Maryborough Mural Project has now made its contribution to this city’s wish for continued tolerance and acceptance and to celebrate our ‘differences’ – a wish for us all to continue to live in this community in peace. This mural was planned and designed to accompany our beautiful Peace Cake which is located at the beginning of the Trail in Maryborough’s City Hall. The Peace Cake commemorates the city’s Armistice Day celebrations. The relationship between the two pieces of art is illustrated through the duplicated symbology in the word “Peace” and the small sculptures placed on the Peace Cake. In this mural the addition of an olive branch into the mix symbolises peace and tolerance between world kind.

COVER STORY

THE SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS ALL YEAR-ROUND Meet our natural born givers

If nature has made you a giver, your hands are born open and so is your heart; and though there may be times when your hands are empty, your heart is always full. A little something borrowed from Novelist Frances Hodgson Burnett, author of classics, The Secret Garden and Little Lord Fauntleroy. It’s an insightful statement on why some people naturally give.

These days our lives are so busy, we’re caught on that treadmill of life, and for many of us Christmas is the only time we stop to think and make time for giving.

Let’s think of Christmas as the spirit of giving without a thought of getting. Let’s also turn our minds to the very unique individuals who are those natural born givers, and who thrive in a constant state of giving. They are most happy when they see joy in people by forgetting the self and finding time for others. In a 2022 paper by psychology student, Rebecca Matthews titled To Give or Not to Give, the author described giving as prosocial behaviour. She went on to explore the positive health benefits of giving. Apparently, givers stress less and are consistently happy.

Fortuitously we have many happy, healthy givers right here in Hervey Bay at the local Neighbourhood Centre and they’re gearing up for the best Christmas lunch money can’t buy. You see in the spirit of Christmas giving its free. Funded from its inception by the Hervey Bay RSL, this year’s Community Christmas Day Lunch will be better than ever.

During the past 15 years the popular event has changed names from Picnic in the Gardens and Picnic in the Park, depending on its location. This year it’s called the Hervey Bay RSL Community Christmas Day Lunch and the Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre’s enormous dining room is the venue. Air-conditioned, undercover and free from Covid restrictions, the tables with be adorned with Christmas tinsel, tassels, baubles and bells, and everyone will be treated to an abundance of food which will be served by the wonderful volunteers who are those natural born givers.

Comfort Kitchen’s Toni Halley was handed the Christmas Lunch baton a couple of years ago by Janet Newman, the original organiser. Toni the natural born giver is a long-term volunteer with the Wednesday Comfort Kitchen which serves a free weekly community

05 Alive Magazine Wide Bay | www.alivemag.com.au

meal. She tells us how it all started.

“I worked with Janet Newman down at Urangan with Christmas in the Park. I used to help her do the prep and help on Christmas Day until 11am. I basically knew what to do. Janet gave me the head up about the quantities.

“When she decided (to finish) she just said Toni will help you. When Tanya Stevenson (HBNC CEO) asked would I do it, I didn’t think long. I said Okay,” said Toni.

The old saying, if you want a job done, ask a busy person still rings true today.

There’s certainly something to that off the cuff statement by past American President Benjamin Franklin. After all, the busier we are, it seems, the better we manage our time. Busy people are able to get more done in a day because they don’t waste time. And that’s why highlighting Toni’s past life gives some context to why she’s up for the task. Toni, who is now retired, is a woman who can do everything and anything.

Throughout her career with Harper Collins Publishing Toni was constantly on the go. Living at Beachmere she was midway between Brisbane and Sunshine Coast airports. As a Sales Representative she had her own territory which included Bundaberg but would fly to and from Sydney airport once a month. It was a high high-flying life where she met celebrities like Ricky Pointing, Steve Waugh and Masterchef’s Pho Ling Yeow who presented Toni with an achievement award. Toni always went beyond her budgets (KPIs) and was recognised as Sales Rep of the year four times, with two of those twice in a row.

“During that time I would have four books on the

go and read them. I would need to know what I was selling. I got the gift of doing the children’s reading.

“QBD was my largest account. I would go to the Brisbane Airports and merchandise. I worked at BCF and did the prepackaging for the big schools,” Toni said.

She challenges me to think about how big a task that would have been which underscores just how much she can easily tackle in a workday.

“Try packing St Margaret’s school for grades 1 to 12. I had a huge budget with Harper Collins. It didn’t worry me. And I don’t stress,” she said.

She naturally transitioned to a career as a Real Estate Agent at Beachmere selling property but after two years, she and her partner Stephen Lockwood decided they liked the idea of living in Hervey Bay close to friends. Originally from Tasmania it seems the weather in Queensland is what she craves.

“I arrived in Queensland in 1971 and we were going to go back to Tasmania when I retired but I couldn’t survive the cold,” she said.

Fortunately, friends and the connections she made in Hervey Bay were the key. Naturally she found her way back to the book business and beyond to volunteering.

“I knew Cate Akaveka when she had Books by the Sea in Hervey Bay and now I help Cate with catering events at the Neighbourhood Centre.

”Originally, I volunteered at Meals on Wheels and then my hairdresser asked if I’d heard of Comfort Kitchen.

“Pre-Covid Wayne Martin ran it and I was his offsider.

Alive Magazine Wide Bay | www.alivemag.com.au 06

Covid came along and shut us down. We would do takeaways weekly, just me and Stephen. Now we’re back to eighty people every Wednesday,” Toni said.

After many years in operation, Comfort Kitchen is a smooth operation and Toni tells me they never run out of food. There are no bookings. Anyone can turn up and enjoy some great food and company. A great big welcome from the six to ten volunteers who regularly turn up, along with nutritious hearty meals is what participants receive.

Toni tells me there is a monthly turnaround with the menu with some amazing dishes like, chicken and sweet corn soup, bangers and mash, cottage pie with fresh carrots and beans, corned meat with white sauce and vegies, and for dessert hot pudding or fruit salad, ice cream and syrup and popping candy, which is an all-time favourite. Toni is proud to be a part of a great team of volunteers’ and wants us to know that it’s real hospitality at its best!

“Comfort Kitchen is not a soup kitchen. We have three people in the kitchen serving and three or four taking the meals out. It’s a real restaurant meal,” she said.

Toni acknowledges that she asked for a little help during 2022 when she was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent surgery. She is thankful that Andrew Stagg stepped up to the plates and now they continue to run the kitchen on a fortnightly rotation.

“Comfort Kitchen is staggered. The doors open at 4.30pm, they come and have a drink and everyone is fed around five. We leave the doors open and the diners arrive at different times. We have professionals who volunteer and come in after their workday. Some are happy to just do dishes.

“It sounds like a lot of work but we have it down pat. We have some of the best volunteers and Kuni and Linda turn up every week and just chatter away

together while doing their work,” she said.

Toni is a true battler who always thinks of others before herself and cancer for her was a bump on life’s which road she navigated with the assistance of her surgeon Dr Emilia Dauway and the amazing McGrath Foundation Breast Cancer nurse Megan Lynch.

Toni tells me they are all looking forward to Christmas, especially now the Covid restrictions of having three separate sittings is over. The opportunity to all join together in shared companionship over a sumptuous Christmas lunch is a welcome relief. In Toni’s first year the Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre catered for 110 and this year they are hoping for more, around 130.

“There will be Christmas carols playing on the big screen. It’s a smorgasbord with ham, chicken, smoked salmon and assorted cold cuts. We have salads of coleslaw, pasta and pesto salad. Then on the tables we will have nibbles and cheese platters.

“Of course there will be Christmas cake and custard. The community is very generous and often donate gifts,” she said.

After speaking with Toni it’s fairly evident that the best gift possible is kindness. It is possibly the greatest gift you can bestow upon another. To give to someone in need, and to lend them a helping hand may be more beneficial to you than you know. Don’t wait for a thank you. True kindness lies within the act of giving without expectation of something in return. It’s certainly what Toni and her volunteers do weekly with big hearts and smiles to match - no thanks necessary.

So, if you have some time and want to not only feel good but feel really good, get on down to the Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre, I guarantee you’ll be welcomed with open arms.

Bookings are essential for the Hervey Bay RSL Community Christmas Day Lunch and can be made online www.hbnc.com.au or by phone 07 4194 3000.

All volunteers need to be registered with Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre and hold a Blue Card.

A WOMAN LIKE NO M-OTHER

There is no doubt that most mothers and daughters share a special bond that’s unconditional.

The relationship is full of love, warmth, affection and care, and is unique and irreplaceable.

It’s unfortunately not the case for everyone but for 20-year-old Hannah Walker and her mum Tanya, it has and always will be.

Now, that very special relationship has been put down in words for the world to see after Hannah selfpublished her very own children’s book last month titled ‘Dear Mum, I Love You’.

The Hervey Bay resident first penned the heartwarming story as a final Year 12 assessment piece at St James Lutheran College four years ago.

Hannah’s English teacher, Ms Stewart, knew it was something special.

“I had a teacher who was amazing and for my final piece of assessment, we had to write a children’s book,” Hannah said.

“My teacher said ‘Hannah you need to publish this’. But I was only 16 at the time so how was I going to publish a book,” she said with a laugh.

The book was put on the back burner when Hannah went on to work full-time in social media marketing and other little side hustles, as well as starting her own jewellery business called XO HANNAH, which frequents local markets.

Four years later, the time was now right to fulfill her dream.

“I don’t make much profit from the book but it’s something I wanted to do to spread joy, especially for the well deserving mums of the world.”

“The book is a little gift for mums. There’s a space where the kids can pop a picture of them with their mum and a space where they can write about why they love their mum. I dedicated this to my mum.

“It’s just mind blowing to think it’s been published. It’s really overwhelming that I can put it in my hands and

say I’ve written this book!”

The 18-page read is filled with colourful and creative animal drawings by local illustrator Tinneale Fairey who captured the adorable scenes beautifully.

Hannah cleverly used pictures of animals to express the emotions of a loving Mum being wise like an owl, cuddly like a koala and encouraging curiosity like kitten with a ball of string.

Of course, Mum Tanya is Hannah’s biggest fan.

“She is over the moon. I wish I recorded her reaction when I showed her,” Hannah said.

“She is just so happy and so proud.

“Mum is my best friend, my number one supporter and any troubles I’ve got, I go to her. Without a doubt she is always there for me.

“It was just a book to show how grateful I am of her support and love and to express that she makes my world better every day.”

Hannah said she has received an overwhelming response from the community since publishing and thanks everyone for their support of her XO HANNAH business.

“I did a post on the community notice page on Facebook and the community has been so supportive, especially with XO HANNAH.

“I think the fact that they are seeing young people in the Fraser Coast community achieving such a great success is great!

“Many have been backing me, supporting me and buying my book.

“All my family and friends love it too and are so proud.”

Hannah has big plans for the future which include opening a shopfront on the Esplanade for her jewellery sales as well as publishing the sequels ‘Dear Dad, I Love You’, and ‘Dear Grandma, I Love You’.

The book is available to purchase at www. authorhannahwalker.square.site or at the XO HANNAH market stalls which are held most Saturdays at the Urangan Pier Market, 7am-12pm.

INSPIRED TO GIVE BACK

It’s been said many times, at many events, that the people who take part in the Dunga Derby are just one big unconventional family who all donate their time, money and effort to a common cause.

Evan Geale from HBW Food Service couldn’t agree more.

In fact, it’s one of the biggest reasons why the familyrun business put their hand up to be a Major Sponsor of the annual car rally in 2022 with a $20,000 donation.

In only their second year of taking part in the rally, Evan’s team - The Chiller @ HBW - were also named the highest fundraisers of the year after taking their tally to an incredible $53,800.

Funds raised by the Dunga Derby go to local charity Rally for a Cause, which supports Fraser Coast families and individuals affected by life-limiting medical conditions or have had their lives disrupted by circumstances beyond their control.

Rally for a Cause was started on the Fraser Coast in 2015 and since then the Dunga Derby event has raised over $2.3 million and has supported 181 local Fraser Coast families.

Evan said when you experience the camaraderie and see first-hand the vital work the dunga teams and RFAC is doing in the community, you can’t help but want to get involved.

“We (HBW) have always been involved in the community and dunga teams would come to us and look to us for sponsorship and we were always glad to do that,” Evan said.

“But two years ago, we wanted to step it up a notch and get more involved, so we went on the dunga and had a fantastic time.

“We stepped up to be the major sponsor and haven’t looked back.

“We have a lot of support behind us, a lot of suppliers we can call on and they love seeing what we can do for the community.

“I would like to thank everyone for their support; our workers, our sponsors and the community.

“Thank you everyone for the support. It’s good to be able to give back.”

What got the team behind the wheel of their Nissan Elgrand, designed to look like a delivery vehicle, was the fact that the charity was all about Hervey Bay, Evan said.

“Rally for a Cause have done such a wonderful job to make it about the Bay and we just wanted to be a part of that.

“It’s such a big community event. It’s for everyone. In our industry we know the people, we know the chefs, people in health services etc in the industry we deal with.

“Then, going along to the dunga you see that there are so many of those people involved in the event and in the whole community.

“It opens your eyes up to so many more people and friendships. It’s so much bigger than just us.”

The first dunga awards night the team attended in 2021 really brought home just how vital their fundraising efforts are for locals in need.

Videos and clips of the recipient families were played and parents of often critically ill children took to the lectern to share how the financial support changed their lives.

At these nights, there’s generally not a dry eye in the house.

“It was pretty emotional. They have some families come up on stage and speak and that was very special.

“It’s such a big thing. Rally for a Cause help so many people.”

Giving is in the family’s blood with Evan’s parents Frank and Lerie Geale starting the tradition when they opened the business 42 years ago.

“We just wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for my parents. It’s also the team; it’s just a good family business that everyone plays a big part in.

“You need many great people to make a business like this happen. The support of the community also allows us to give back as well.”

HBW has also been long-time supporter of the community through donations to other local individuals, sporting groups and not-for-profit charities.

One of those groups is Trish and Josie for the Homeless who host a breakfast twice a week at the back of the Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre to fill the stomachs of those who may not otherwise have the means to buy food.

“We have had a lot to do with Trish and Josie over the years and they are absolutely amazing!

“We try to help them out wherever we can.”

The Chiller @ HBW team will be back and hopefully better on next year’s four-day dunga adventure with a fine for a breakdown now recorded on their dunga history.

“We’ve pushed the boundaries on the Elgrand… it’s not the greatest car to take on the dunga,” Evan said with a laugh.

“This year we were driving along, turned a corner and the steering wheel turned on its side and I thought to myself, this doesn’t feel right.

“So, we pulled up to have a look and the back wheel was just hanging on by a thread.

“But the Greased Monkey mechanics took the car away, gave us a spare to drive, fixed it all up and off we went the next day.

“We’ll have to do more work on it for next year.”

Evan encourages everyone to get on board and experience the fun, frivolity, mud and dust of the dunga at least once.

“My biggest saying is if you’re thinking about it, just do it!

“Give it a go. It’s all worth it. You will have a lot of fun, meet a lot of new friends and what you get out of it in the long run just gives back to yourself.”

Alive Magazine is proud to be a media partner and we look forward to highlighting all the dunga action and recipient stories again in 2023.

GEM OF THE sky

With a current shortage of specialist care and surgery available locally, many neurological, cancer and cardiac patients have to find a way to make ongoing trips to Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast for medical treatment.

Travel is not only costly but also leads to travel fatigue for the patients.

River Heads Pharmacy owner and veteran pilot Mark (Maverick) McMurtrie, kept hearing from his customers about the struggle to get to these appointments, especially those who are immune comprised and can’t travel on public transport.

So, Mark made it his goal to make a difference and take to the air for free.

With the help of Director of Operations Melissa Lay, Mark now donates his Piper Arrow aircraft, piloting skills, time, and money into the not-for-profit Community Flights Charity to help close the gap to healthcare access for those doing it tough.

Sponsorship and donations from local supporters play a big part in keeping this service in the air and the Hervey Bay RSL is proud to be a major sponsor with a Community Grant of over $10,000 this year to cover the cost of the charity’s office rent.

Community Flights aims to provide a flexible, safe, and free transport service to bring patients from their nearest regional airport to their medical treatment or services destination.

Mark said approved travel is for those who need it most with criteria to meet before take-off.

“We are very specific about who we take,” Mark said.

“It’s charity money and we are catering to those people who are struggling so our criteria include those who are in financial hardship or need ongoing medical treatment all the time; that can be very taxing on people financially.

“Or, If the doctor says their immune system is so bad that they can’t go on a train or a bus because they are at risk, we will take them.”

Mark said the response from all his passengers since starting the service in July this year had been overwhelming.

“They are all super appreciative and they can’t imagine that someone is doing this, especially for free! A few do cry and that’s heartbreaking.

“Some of the people I have flown have been to the point where they were just about to give up.

“There was a lady from Childers who was at the point of her cancer treatment that she was in so much pain and just couldn’t drive (down to Brisbane) anymore.

“The week before Melissa had handed out flyers to the doctors and her doctor referred her to us.

“She told me I was her “angel”. I’m not good with compliments but that was very rewarding.

“I love doing it. It’s so good to know that’s it’s needed and appreciated.”

LIZZIE LEARNS TO… CARE FOR THE COMMUNITY

Alive Magazine Wide Bay | www.alivemag.com.au 14
LEARNS TO
LIZZIE

It’s no secret.

The demands on the country’s public health system are stretched to an all-time high.

Patients are waiting longer than ever to be treated. The incredible workers who treat them are stretched to breaking point.

It’s a bit of a mess for all involved.

So it was hugely exciting to meet with two women who have taken big action to help ease the burden at a local level.

Local mother and daughter duo, Sue and Nadine Dodd have become the Fraser Coast’s go-to service for home care at lightning speed.

It’s hard to miss them in their bright pink, flowery work car, and even harder not to smile when you see them.

Our Nurse(s) Next Door are going to make a massive difference to so many households on the Fraser Coast.

Sitting with them before we got to work, it was clear they had big ideas for all the different ways they could help our ever-changing community.

From offering retreat and respite facilities for clients and carers, through to expanding their services beyond care, it’s so clear they key word at the heart of everything they do is ‘care’.

As a nurse working in the public health service, Nadine saw first-hand where the gaps in service were appearing.

Setting up this fabulous home care service meant that more patients could recuperate in the comfort of their own home, and the pressure felt within hospitals could be lightened.

As someone who cares deeply about the Fraser Coast community, I was excited to hear that even just for a day I could be part of the solution.

What was most interesting, though, was how wrong I’d been about who the service was for.

I’m sure I’m not the only one who’s made the mistake of thinking home care services were more specifically for our more senior residents.

However, when we got to talking, the true potential of what they’ve created started to dawn on me.

There are times where all of us have needed a helping hand.

Possibly we might have resisted at first, but there is always a point where you can no longer ‘do it all on your own’.

The new mother who’s overwhelmed and simply needs a break.

The injured worker who would love to dress their wounds, but can’t quite reach ‘the spot’.

The widower adjusting to a new world order who can’t yet face the shops alone.

It’s not always easy to ask for help, but most times when we do, we look back and kick ourselves at how much better our lives have been, and wonder why we didn’t ask sooner.

The importance of what Nadine and Sue have created can’t be understated.

On the one hand, their growing body of qualified nurses and carers means a huge array of employment opportunities for locals.

On the other, people who need care can receive it with dignity in the privacy of their own home.

As enthralling as our chat was, eventually it was time to get to work.

My experience with Sue and Nadine is proof that even a simple conversation can hold a whole lot of value for someone – anyone – who spends the majority of their time on their own.

We met with the wonderful Rose, a gentle, kindhearted woman with a smile that would light up any room.

While Rose was self-sufficient, needing very little support, we spent time connecting, getting to know each other and sharing our love of this region which has given us both so much.

I suppose the most powerful impacts of the conversation weren’t immediate.

But with time to reflect, I can see how both carers and clients get a lot out of these visits.

This was ‘it feels better to give than to receive’ playing out in real time.

I realised through my time with Rose that not every minute of every day needs to be filled in order for that day to be valuable.

Sometimes a lingering moment is all it takes for your day to be made.

As we left Rose, I was so pleased to know that so many locals would be having a similar experience every day thanks to Nadine, Sue and the Nurse Next Door service.

I pictured the relief that so many would feel at the sighting of that bright pink uniform coming towards them.

I imagined the satisfaction that surely fills the heart of every team member with every interaction.

I thought towards the day that Nadine and Sue’s dreams of making their incredible service available to absolutely anyone come true (trust me, it’s on the horizon, and coming quickly!)

Being able to help others, and do it for a living, is not without its challenges.

But my goodness, what a fulfilling, noble pursuit.

I can’t wait to see what’s next for our ladies in pink.

It might be the We’ve Got You Foundation not-forprofit arm of their business.

It might be securing land for their respite retreat centre.

It might simply be expanding their services to ensure that anyone who needs it has the best care available. Who knows.

But whatever that turns out to be, I know it’s going to be good for everyone.

With thanks so Nadine and Sue Dodd for their time and service to the community. If you’re looking to use Nurse Next Door’s services – either for yourself or a loved one – phone 1300 600 247 or go to nursenextdoor.com.au/locations/fraser-coast/.

EPIC RIDE FOR CHARITY

Alive Magazine Wide Bay | www.alivemag.com.au 18
THE PROFILE

AHervey Bay man’s attempt to shine a light on inclusivity in the disabled community and raise money for charity will be no easy feat.

However, Rod Gothe is determined to take on a legendary adventure, travelling from Hervey Bay to Melbourne via Sydney in three different mobility chairs to raise funds for local charity Community Flights.

The charity, which started flying in July this year, provides a flexible, safe, and free transport service to bring patients from their nearest regional airport to their medical treatment or services destination.

Rod said he will be stopping at towns and cities along the way, not only to learn about the disabilities of others but also to spread his message and raise awareness.

Residents of those regions will be invited to walk or wheel with Rod for a short distance to have a chat about life and the reasons behind choosing to help this vital charity.

“I don’t see myself as disabled really,”

“I just say that I get a comfortable chair!

“I don’t really feel that disabled to be honest and I guess most of us don’t really. Sometimes it’s a choice, sometimes it’s not.

“If the glass can be at least half full, your life is 100 times better than if your glass is half empty.” Rod said.

This quote echoes the philosophy of one Rod’s heroes; Julius Sumner Miller who famously said, ‘it’s not empty, it’s full of air’.

Rod said the use of three different chairs - including a manual wheelchair with a powered wheel on the front,

an electric 4WD wheelchair, and a mobility scooterwas so that other wheel-chair bound people could relate to him in some way.

There will also be a trailer on the back of the chairs carrying extra batteries in case of a breakdown on the three-month journey.

The Fraser Coast community can cheer Rod on and donate through live streaming on YouTube via Accessible Globe TV, plus find out which celebrities will join him on the adventure of a lifetime.

Rod will leave Hervey Bay in June next year.

LINDA JONES

Alive Magazine Wide Bay | www.alivemag.com.au 20
LOCAL ARTIST

For a lover of visual art, a gallery is the perfect place to spend your days surrounded by an ever changing display of stimulation and inspiration. That is how the past nine years has been for creative photographer Linda Jones. She has dedicated her time as a volunteer gallery assistant at Gatakers ArtSpace for nearly a decade and worked alongside a team who has nurtured and inspired her in her creative pastimes.

To Linda, the world is seen in still life. Beautiful memories are captured in a still image and hung on her white walls to chronicle her life. From her beautiful photographs she remembers smells, sounds, moods. Carefully placed objects resting in filtered light with layers of grainy texture, soft, smudged backgrounds and bleeding, inky edges. Linda’s photographic journey commenced when her daughter Laura moved to the UK, and between the two women, their communication happened through a series of images. Many years later the images became an exhibition at Gatakers, an assemblage of colour and layered texture that was created between a mother and daughter who were bound together by a visual language. Linda’s husband, Ian is her personal bowerbird and gifts her with objects he has found on his daily walks with their harlequin Great Dane, Harlow. A twisted stick, sun-bleached bird skull, or split seedpod is dropped into Linda’s hands upon his arrival home and from that gift, Linda captures the moment in a restful, calming style.

It’s this restful, calming style that flows through Linda and creates a sense of peace and safety. Strangers often share personal stories with Linda in a moment

of repose, and it’s natural for her to offer a cup of tea in the gallery when she knows it’s really needed. Over the years Linda has volunteered in numerous positions including time as a Lifeline counsellor, and working for Home Assist helping those incapacitated by age, dementia and disability. She feels the often difficult and challenging times paled in comparison to the rewarding and wonderful feeling of knowing she was able to help someone who needed some kindness, just like those who gravitate to her now and share their story with her.

Linda carries a special and unique quality that has been embraced by the team at Gatakers. They see her beautiful kindness as an element that enhances the experience of the gallery, and after nine years of happily volunteering her time there, she has officially been made part of the casual staff. This astonishes Linda, because she proclaims, “They could have chosen someone with younger legs, and a better memory!”

But the qualities Linda possesses are rare like the precious gem that she is, a treasure to be cherished.

TASH

Alive Magazine Wide Bay | www.alivemag.com.au 22 LOCAL MUSICIAN

Who are your musical influences?

There are quite a few for me, but all for different reasons. Adele, Elton John and (Bernie Taupin), Billy Joel, Amy Winehouse and Etta James. Each of these artists have played a massive part in my music and songwriting world. Each of them inspire me in a different way.

Favourite line from a song?

I wouldn’t be able to just pick one because there are too many to choose from, but Wicked Games by Chris isaak song that is written so beautifully and is filled with lyrics that other people have always been able to relate to in the midst of heartbreak, that’s what I like the most about song lyrics.

What instruments do you play?

I play guitar and piano.

Do you write your own songs?

Yes. I’ve written my own songs for a long time. It’s taken me a little bit of time but I will finally be releasing a recorded original next year.

If you could play any gig or venue, where would that be?

Playing for any popular radio show in Australia, but if I had to choose a venue it would definitely be the Adelaide Entertainment Centre. That place with a fully packed crowd is just amazing.

It was recently “Include a Charity Week” which aims to highlight the impact you can make for a cause close to your heart through leaving a gift in your Will. Two locals Enid and Marie have both stepped up and made a pledge to leave a gift in their wills to the local charity Rally for a Cause.

Rally for a Cause is a local charity that supports people with life limiting medical conditions or those whom have been subject to tragic circumstances beyond their control. During the week dedicated to raising awareness about gifts in wills, both Enid* and Marie* attended presentations about how they can support a local charity, and both ladies expressed an interest in wanting to know how they could go about including Rally for a Cause.

“For me, it’s about knowing I will make my mark, and leave positive impact on the lives of locals, and it could potentially be people I know, my own children, family or friends. That’s really important to me, I can help a charity and I know it helps locals at the same time,” Enid said.

Making a Will is the only way you can be sure your wishes will be followed after you’re gone. If you don’t make a Will, the law will dictate how your Estate is distributed meaning part or all of your Estate may end up going to people you never intended to benefit. There are different types of gifts you can give to charity, but all will make a lasting impact. Don’t forget your superannuation. This is not typically covered by your Will as it is held by a trustee. You could choose to add your super to your estate and gift it to your favourite charity.

Gifts in Wills are an important source of income for many charities and enable them to carry out much of their vital work. You can decide how small or large your gift is.

When asked about her thoughts on supporting a charity through Wills Marie added that hearing that gifts of all sizes are welcomed was important for her.

“I don’t have millions of dollars, but hearing that a local charity would be grateful for any contribution made me realise I can actually help with what I have to offer.”

Including a charity in your Will is simple; the process is the same as providing for your loved ones. Your gift can be as little or as large as you want, and if done at the same time as writing your Will, your bequest can be done after other financial considerations like leaving money for loved ones and funeral costs have been accounted for.

The reality is that most charitable gifts in Wills are left by thoughtful Australians who are people just like you who simply want to make a difference and see their vision for the world live on. It is always recommended to seek professional guidance about your individual circumstances, and understand that everyone’s position is different.

To learn more about Rally for a Cause and the ways you can help make an impact, reach out anytime admin@ rallyforcause.org.au or by calling 0429 224 682.

GIVING THE GIFT OF HEALTH TO YOURSELF

When we are young we have plenty of spare time, all of our health, but no money. When we are middle-aged we are healthy (to a degree), we have some money but we have no time. When we are retired we have all the time in the world, all the money (usually) but do we have our health?

Priorities change over the years. Having a social life, getting bogged down with careers focusing on raising a family and even making enough money to retire. Are we constantly putting ourselves last or even putting our own health and fitness on the back burner?

I’m very sorry to say but we are extremely unhealthy as a region and a nation.

Most Fraser Coast residents are overweight and over a third of us are obese. The rate of child obesity is climbing. Over 65% of admissions to Wide Bay Hospitals are due to chronic disease (99% preventable). Alcohol sales continue to increase. We miss the mark by a mile when it comes to recommended weekly exercise. We are more sedentary than ever before and most of our time is spent glued to highly addictive devices. We feel the need to be connected all of the time in only a digital way, so much so that we need to wear our phones as a watch.

Do you want to make a change to be healthy now and for the years to come?

If you’re searching the internet for answers, be ready to swim in the online sewerage that is fake or enhanced social media ‘influencers’, diet culture and the con-artists trying to take your money with fear mongering techniques, the expensive supplement pyramid schemes, the pseudoscience cherry-picking documentaries, and the list goes on!

We have an emotional attachment to our body, our food, our image and also worry about the perspectives of others. The ‘snake oil’ selling charlatan’s parading online are honing in on that emotion so that you buy, buy, buy.

The good news: there IS some gold on the internet if you know where to look. It comes in the form of people like highly recognised nutritional scientist, Alan Aragon or exercise scientist Dr. Mike Israetel to just name a few.

There ARE people out there in cyberspace who want to help others with the truth about nutrition and exercise. ALSO There are professionals in our community that are genuinely assisting others to be healthier, fitter and stronger. Education is the key. For those raising children,

what are you teaching them about nutrition and exercise? What example are you setting? It’s too me to change your priorities now! Go to the gym, go running, play a sport, do anything but make sure you enjoy it so you can carry on with it. Spending time with your children can be active instead of group screen time on the couch. You can make low calorie nutritious food choices. That’s right, it’s all just a choice.

If you have read all the way down to this part, I’m guessing you’re thinking of making a healthy change. If you need help or unsure of what to do, we would love to help you. Get in touch if our free health seminar in January is something you would be interested in. It’s time to give to yourself, change your life and inspire others.

‘TIS THE SEASON

s December rolls around, that busy time of year takes hold and stores from supermarkets, shopping complexes and all manner of retail experiences pronounce The Season (some many months in advance)!

It is the time for giving of gifts but not everyone embraces this wholeheartedly. In his book, ‘The Five Love Languages’, Gary Chapman lists ways that can improve the communication in relationships. 1. Receiving of gifts 2. Words of Affirmation. 3. Quality Time. 4. Acts of Service. 5. Physical touch.

So although gift giving may be high on the list, you may possibly find one of these other options makes more impact! One thing is for certain though, when it comes to children and gifts, you cannot go wrong. This month we’ve sorted some wonderful pressies for you to think about for those young ones near and far. Happy Shopping, have a wonderful Christmas and a blessed year in 2023!

AN EXPERIENCE TO REMEMBER

For many, Christmas comes as a time of overwhelm and stress, for others there is a deep spiritual connection to Christmas and as a time to give back to others and find the perfect gift for their family and friends (for some, it can be both!).

What presents or experiences do you give to your closest that are meaningful and memorable?

One year I was on a mission to find my friend the perfect gift. I searched every store and spent many hours racking my brain and researching online gift guides to give me the answer. These gift guides were based on a person’s likes and dislikes, areas of interest or their hobbies. Still, I could not find the perfect gift. I was living the ‘what to get the person who has everything’ dilemma.

As such, I decided to forget trying to find a physical object. As Maya Angelou famously stated: “At the end of the day people won’t remember what you said or did, they will remember how you made them feel.”

Instead of buying my friend a material object, I decided to share an experience, creating a memory that would last longer than any material item. Since that day, I very rarely buy people material gifts anymore. I love to buy people an experience that they can either enjoy with someone they love, or something we can do together. Just recently for my daughter’s 17th birthday, I asked her what she would like and all she wanted was to go out on the boat for a few nights with a friend and us. It was the best thing she could have asked for and we created some really fun and lasting memories.

Here at Mineral Earth, we pride ourselves on giving every guest a memorable experience, a journey. We offer beautiful experiences that you can enjoy as a group, a couple or by yourself. If you are looking to give someone the gift of pampering this Christmas or would like to enjoy our spa with a group of your friends or your loved one, we have many different treatments to offer you. Wishing you all a Christmas of joy, love and happiness.

I’ve always lived by a notion that the more money you make, the more money you have to give. I often see people in business with a scarcity mindset that undervalue themselves and therefore undercharge for their services. When I see this I question how they are going to provide their services to those people when they’re no longer in business due to lack of income and cashflow.

When we value our services we radiate a different energy to our clients. One that gives them confidence in our abilities. When we deliver the outcome expected, chances are they are going to be more than happy to pay for the service they have received.

I have observed a pattern across all business owners that reflects when you’re in financial hardship your mindset is blown as well as your cashflow. In most cases the mindset has deteriorated first and the money has followed. If you charge accordingly you are not only doing yourself a favour but also your clients. They want to see you there for the long run. If you asked them to choose between paying less and having you in operation for a short time or paying more and having you open to them in the future, chances are they’ll choose the latter.

So, value yourself. Take pride in what you do and charge accordingly. You will run a more successful business, you will have happier clients and you will have the cashflow to match.

When you build up the cashflow, that’s when the fun starts. That’s when you are then in a position to give back. What a fulfilling feeling that is. I can guarantee when that extra income gives you the ability to pass it forward and do something remarkable you will wonder why you ever doubted yourself in the first place.

If you have this scarcity mindset, work on making small incremental steps to change your thought process. What is a cause that you would to give back to? To be in a position to give back to that cause do you need to be financially stable? What are you willing to do to get there?

A cause or a purpose can be a powerful driver in business and in life. You might be one decision away from making an impact. If increasing your price can help you instigate change, what are you waiting for? Charge accordingly.

Be brave. Be ambitious. Know your worth and always, always give back!

ecember has rolled around again and the fishing is heating up!

The pelagic action has been great this year and should continue into the New Year.

If you are after table fish there has been plenty inshore on the reefs in estuaries. The Barra closure is in full effect now so please be mindful when fishing in tidal waters.

Burrum

The Burrum has been a great place to escape the winds with mangrove jacks being a favourite species to target. Casting Zerek prawns, Rapala X Raps and Z-Man 4-inch Swimmerz have been getting the bites. For the bait fishos, a live mullet or herring has been getting the job done on the jacks. In the deep holes, tarpon, trevally and queenfish have been taking soft plastics and soft vibes.

Local Reefs

On the local reefs grass sweetlip, blackall, cod and coral trout have been reported. Lure anglers have been doing well on big golden trevally jigging micro jigs and plastics over reefs like the outer banks, the Arty and around the beacons. A few mac tuna can also be found locally as they work the bait in the shipping channels.

Urangan Pier

The Urangan Pier has seen some catches of queenfish and golden trevally out towards the end on live baits. The beaches and channel have been producing a few whiting on the bigger tides.

Platypus Bay

Things have been tough with the odd grunter, golden trevally and queenfish reported. Working the surface has been more productive with tuna, mackerel and trevally found around the bait.

Sandy Strait

The strait has fished well for bread and butter species like grunter, whiting and flathead. For those who are willing to put up with the sand flies the creeks of the island have been producing some great jack fishing. Mullet strips fished on the run-out tide has been the most effective as the jacks move out of the mangroves.

Some nice cod have been coming from the ledges along with a few blackall. Threadfin salmon have been on the move with the recent rains as move down from the upper reaches. Mud crabs will also be a great target, taking a few crab pots should be worth your while.

A PRECIOUS GIFT

Welcome to our Life-Chat this month. I was happy to learn that the theme for December is ‘Giving’ because a friend recently gave me something very precious. It is gift that will last me for the remainder of my life and will never lose its preciousness. As you can imagine, this is a very valuable gift indeed. I hope you won’t mind if I share the details with you.

I had a tough time for a few months this year, and there’s something about having a tough time when you are usually the one who helps others, that makes it hard to admit there’s a problem. I was very reluctant to own up to the fact I was struggling. I did not want my friends and family to know that my old nemesis of anxiety had swamped me again like a king tide.

The insidious thing about anxiety (and I mention this because some readers will identify with what I am saying) is that it attacks our self-esteem. Confidence in our ability to live a sane, healthy and normal life, disappears. We feel inadequate, guilty, and so much less than our best self.

It was during this period that my dear friend Twila gave me my precious gift.

I had invited her to my place for a cuppa and some puppy-talk. While I struggled to put on a happy face, Twila knew that my tears were not far away, and finally I confessed to her that I was embarrassed and upset that I was unable to get on top of my feelings.

With eyes that held the kindness of eons, Twila said to me, “Michelle, I love you as my friend, not because of the work you do, not because of what you do for me, not because of how you look, but because you have a beautiful essence. I choose you as my friend because you are beautiful at your core, and nothing

else matters. I love you for that.”

Twila continued with words that reassured me I would find a way back to myself because the real me was resilient and strong. She offered to take me out for coffee, for puppy-play dates and to stay in touch so that I felt her support in tangible, regular ways.

The gift she gave me was to restore my faith in myself. She helped me realise that despite my current anxiety and embarrassment, none of that defined me. She looked into my soul and found beauty there. How amazing was that? And how humble, grateful and restored I felt for the gift of her words and her presence in my life.

Twila was not the only earth-angel to help me out of those times. I am blessed with special people in my life, and I am back to my old self again now. I did seek some professional help, so if this story strikes a chord in you, please don’t hesitate to do the same. Life’s challenges test even those of us who are trained to help others, and as my doctor wisely asked me, “Don’t you think I ever get sick?”

My key message is this – sometimes, it is far more important to gift kindness and support than to give a present in colourful wrapping. Genuine words that reassure someone they are strong, wise, lovable, worthy, beautiful or courageous may be the most precious gift you can offer not just this season, but in every season. That’s my thought, anyhow. Until next time, have a wonderful month. GIVING WITH Repurpose

This festive season has increased challenges of high inflation, rising interest rates, product shortages and a general sense of instability that has been lingering since Covid arrived in 2020.

For those watching their budget and are keen to get their hands dirty, I have created a collection of affordable DIY gifts that will surely please, the projects don’t feel low-cost even though they are! Each project can be done in an afternoon and cost very little.

Giving a handmade gift is environmentally conscious especially when using repurposed unwanted items, offering landfill bound items a second life. To be honest I wasn’t always into working with used goods, I didn’t understand the pleasure of the hunt but now I really get a kick out of finding a bargain then transforming into a unique, functional, aesthetically pleasing piece.

Sharing your time, energy and creativity is a thoughtful gesture that should not be confused with being a cheap ass! Time is one of our most precious commodities!

WASHING MACHINE POT PLANTERS:

Big pot planters make a statement, they are great for patios, suit renters, are low maintenance, and moveable. These planters are one of a kind and ideal to gift to someone special this Christmas.

Your local tip shop should have plenty of old Washing Machine drum tubs already removed from the machine unit and ready to use with only a few modifications.

The Drums make great Fire Pits, check out my social media to see one I made. It works brilliantly. It is an affordable gift idea that everyone can enjoy together.

TIPS FOR DRUM SELECTION:

*Flat bottom is good for stability

*Holes in the bottom for drainage or you can drill

*Doesn’t have lots of plastic parts that may require loads of time removing

Pick a drum size that suits your potting mix budget and plant choice. Standard drums will require about three bags of potting mix available from my favourite nursery Hervey Bay Garden Centre starting from $9 per bag. I use this nursery because they always have new stock, sell unique plants, family owned and operated and will take the time to have a yarn.

Inspect your drum options with drainage in mind, not only at bottom but also around top lip and sides.

Fraser Coast Council Tip Shop has washing machine drums for $5 each.

No suitable drums available? Hunt for your treasure and think outside the box!

Teapots, wheelbarrows, metal bins, even a sink or toilet. You never know what you will find at the Tip Shop or your backyard. Your imagination is the limit.

I found drum no1 in a retro green colour. I liked raw look simply cleaned and kept as is. Additional drainage holes were drilled to avoid any plant rot and fungus forming around the lip. Easy Peasy!

On Wall Hanging Drum no2, I spent many hours hand painting with acrylic paints.

Using stencils and freehand techniques to create a vibrant piece of garden art that can be uniquely viewed from all sides.

A much quicker option would be two coats of a quality spray paint containing a primer. Freshening the drum and giving it new life. Make sure you thoroughly clean drum first and ensure drum is dry before painting. Approx. $18 per can, does 2-3 coats.

After 48hrs drying time, I sprayed drum with a protective seal. Wait another 24hrs before potting.

Drum 2 had a large hole drilled in back panel by a handyman, he also drilled a sturdy bolt into my brickwork to hang on exterior wall. When the drum has potting mix and is watered it will become extremely heavy. Ensure you have a qualified person to assist with any hanging or major drilling to avoid injury to yourself or property damage.

Planting your Drum is going to make it heavy to transport so consider giving unfilled. It could be a fun activity for you to do together.

You can’t go wrong with a kangaroo paw plant for instant height, vibrant colour, plus bonus bird attracting.

Hervey Bay Garden Centre Urraween has new season vibrant colours available of Kangaroo Paw. Rainbow, Purple, Blue, Aqua - they really need to be seen to be believed.

If you have succulents, yucca, or aloe vera on hand, take a cutting or transplant a portion to keep your budget low

Water daily for 3 weeks, then every couple of days but less in the cooler months

This will be the most fun you will have with a washing machine this Christmas!
