THE INSPIRATION OF CREATION

Alive Magazine Wide Bay | www.alivemag.com.au 04

INSPIRED.

This is both the theme of the issue and an ‘I am’ statement.

I am inspired.

A few key events have occurred in just one short month, and I’ll outline some of them below.

There was a very intense breath-work session held in Hervey Bay by a Mr Brendan Holland, who I met many moons ago and got to write one of my first feature articles on (title: ‘Freedom to be’).

It was the most people in attendance so far and something was in the air (or maybe the cacao) because I’m not the only one who had a powerful experience.

I cracked through barriers that felt like layers of ego and felt a profound connection to my true self. No light without dark, it also showed me where I was not showing up as I could and you might argue, deserve. It was like an awakening and a remembering at the same time.

I also had a birthday and turned 42. Douglas Adams fans will know this number is indeed the answer to ‘life, the universe and everything.’

Something of an auspicious number to me, I noticed myself being more present than usual and I reflected on how I would usually celebrate a birthday compared to how I wanted to celebrate this one. I also noticed something of a graceful trade between youth and wisdom. I took some time to ponder this and noticed the difference between this year versus the big ‘four oh’.

At 40, I noticed I was somewhat remorseful about the years I would never get back and the youth I would never have again. This year was much more peaceful in the idea that those years behind me were not for nothing.

I’ve seen four decades of human civilisation, accumulated knowledge and experiences, seen many foreign lands and met some of their people.

I’ve also been through multiple careers in various

fields. More specifically I’ve created photography businesses from scratch and been through the highs and lows of a full-time professional artist’s career.

I reflect on the early stage when it was all so exciting and the possibilities were endless. I remember how exciting it was and how every day was a new experience and an opportunity to learn, grow and create.

I remember seeking mentors both in business and the craft itself - learning from the wisdom and experience of those who had done it before me.

This notion segues into the final event I wanted to share that has led to my currently inspired spacethe interview I shared with two young men who are very much in the afore mentioned early stage of their careers.

Both started professionally last year (2023) and both produce video. Yes, video is different to photography but the two are also like potato, tomato if you get my drift.

I met with Xavier Marello and Zac Shaw at local coffee hotspot Operation Underground (OU). Not only was it an ideal location for a meeting and portraits, but it also happened to be the guys’ initial meeting place as well as the inception of their collaborations.

At just 21 and 22 respectively, they both had significant knowledge and beautiful work for the relative infancy of their careers.

It was easily the least ‘interview’, interview I’ve done—it was much more ‘grab a coffee and talk about creating.’

The exchange was inspiring on many levels, and we also had a ton of laughs.

As we waited for Zac to join us, Xav started telling me the story of the night they first met each other. He pauses:

“Actually, I’ll wait until Zac gets here because he tells it better.”

COVER STORY @russbenningphotography

I noted that this was the type of ‘know your strengths’ attitude that lends perfectly to a collaborative partnership.

I got to hear the story from both sides, and it was both entertaining and insightful to their dynamic.

They separately volunteered to capture an open mic night at OU. Not knowing what to expect of the other, they each had first impressions that the other was much better than themselves.

“In walks the handsomest feller I’ve ever seen in my life with the most you beaut, next gen setup” Zac explains as he tells me his side.

Xav went on to fill in some blanks about how green he was at the time and was grateful for some instruction and guidance especially around getting good motion shots with a gimbal. As it turned out he had just upgraded his gear with the intention to step into videography as a profession.

Zac admitted he had just finished training on how to use the equipment, and from a healthy competition point of view, was glad he had the upper hand on experience. I saw this as another synergy marker for a complimentary team up.

I ask about the partnership dynamic and Xav goes on to say, “technically we’re each other’s competition, but I believe in the motto of ‘surround yourself with people that are better than you or know more than you’”.

They first worked together after this as a collaboration on a personal project of Zac’s and have since done various productions together. Still operating under their own umbrella’s, they hint

towards merging businesses or at least having a joint entity as well as their individual work.

They share how watching each other’s work improve is healthy because they’re both proud of the other guy and also gives them an updated benchmark for their own quality of work.

The conversation went straight into camera bodies and lenses and quickly moved onto to the similarities and differences of still photography compared to video. We discussed the huge jump in quality from when I started my career to the present day.

Also of note is the introduction of social media and learning tools such as YouTube and the massive impact they play on the role of a modern creative.

We share a bonding experience when I reveal from my own camera bag another Sony to put on the table next to theirs. I was met with a collective, “Ah yes!”

Later, as we get to the actual portrait section of the meeting, we even swap lenses to try out different looks.

At this point it’s worth noting, on the topic of inspiration, that no longer is there simply a ‘Written by’ tag on the first page of this article. This is the first issue I produced the photography and the story.

The differences and compatibility of their personalities clearly shone through. The dynamic was both complimentary and quite entertaining - a mixed bag of playful quips and clear adoration for each other and their work was refreshing.

Alive Magazine Wide Bay | www.alivemag.com.au 06

Returning to the topic of collaboration Xav shares, “I am most excited and most inspired when I’m working with other creatives.”

Zac continues this sentiment. “There’s definitely a pride to producing work on your own, but when you collaborate you bring in other people and you get to ask the question, what will make the work better?”

I loved the maturity and humbleness these young creatives bring to the table.

Towards the end of our meeting, we discuss how we can work together on some upcoming projects and in that moment, I’m struck by the thought that no matter what stage in life or a career there is always something to be learned from each other. It can always be a back-and-forth transaction if you’re open to it.

The uncanny timing of this months’ significant events combined lead me to a fresh realisation in respects to the concept of youth vs wisdomeach stage of life/career brings a different level of contribution. One is not greater than the other.

I enjoyed so much the revisiting of the fresh, youthful, exciting stages of a creative career and I hope some of my experiences and wisdom made an impact on my two new friends and

collaborators!

I think it’s safe to say we all left feeling fresh inspiration.

I wonder how many of you, my beautiful readers, feel the same way? I challenge you this month to reflect on what it is you’re inspired by and what impact that can have on the greater collective.

We are inspired.

I AM INSPIRED.

WOMEN’S WALK & TALK HERVEY BAY

Alive Magazine Wide Bay | www.alivemag.com.au 08 COMMUNITY CONNECTION

Superheroes come in many forms; however, the real-life ones don’t wear capes and their superpowers include a loving heart and the ability to create and enforce positive change.

One superhero that deserves a special mention is Alicia Wade who has risen from her own dark place to assist the community across many platforms.

Alicia, one of the co-founders of Women’s Walk & Talk Hervey Bay, shares a story of how the group came to life during a conversation at the Hervey Bay Chamber of Commerce.

The idea was to create a space for women to walk, talk, and support each other. Fraser Coast Mates and Men’s Walk & Talk Hervey Bay provided collaboration, support, and guidance in setting up the initiative.

From her childhood days, walking has served as a therapeutic ritual for Alicia.

The simple act of walking to school and back with her sister laid the foundation for a lifelong connection with this activity.

As the years unfolded, she grappled with a fear of driving and battled social anxieties that loomed over her.

So, walking became her everyday lifestyle instead of driving a car.

Despite these challenges, Alicia embarked on a transformative journey, gradually building her confidence and self-esteem. It wasn’t until the age of 30 that she finally conquered her fear of driving and obtained her driver’s license.

Throughout this personal triumph, walking remained a steadfast companion, providing solace and grounding.

Alicia’s enduring relationship with walking inspired her to weave it into the fabric of her life in a profound way.

In a testament to the power of perseverance, Alicia has not only overcome her own obstacles but has extended a helping hand to others.

Recognising the myriad of benefits of walking, she established the Women’s Walk & Talk Hervey Bay charity.

This initiative is not merely about putting one foot in front of the other; it’s a movement that promotes health, fitness, and community connection through the simple yet powerful act of walking.

Alicia’s creation, Women’s Walk & Talk Hervey

Bay has become a beacon for women seeking connection, growth, and mutual empowerment.

It provides a nurturing space where women can come together, share their journeys and uplift each other.

Through this charity, Alicia has not only transformed her own life but has also become a catalyst for positive change in the lives of countless others, one step at a time.

Alicia emerges as a seasoned and adept professional within the Early Childhood Education and Care domain, boasting an impressive career spanning over two decades across various Australian states.

Her extensive expertise encompasses a range of skills, from proficient business management and strategic planning to adept financial control and dynamic marketing strategies.

Throughout her illustrious career, Alicia has proven instrumental in guiding numerous early childhood services to meet and surpass national quality standards.

Her impactful contributions extend beyond the conventional realms of education, seamlessly blending with business acumen and strategic foresight.

Alicia’s multifaceted skill set positions her as a transformative force within the field, consistently ensuring that the early childhood services under her purview not only adhere to but excel in meeting the rigorous national quality benchmarks.

Motivated by an intense yearning to effect positive change in her community and discover the deeper meaning of life, Alicia encountered a profound turning point after facing the aftermath of a traumatic event - a failed marriage resulting in the loss of everything.

Battling anxiety and panic attacks in the wake of this personal upheaval, her journey took a challenging turn when her professional life as an Operational Manager became entangled in the rapid expansion of a company, ballooning from 60 to 150 Early Childhood centres within just six months.

Amidst these adversities, Alicia found herself at a crossroads, prompting her to pause her life and embark on a transformative pursuit.

Delving into coaching, she specialised in life coaching, leadership coaching, and business coaching, seeking not only personal redemption but also a meaningful legacy.

In 2018, a pivotal year in her odyssey, Alicia’s narrative took a positive shift. She not only authored a book but also embraced public speaking, sharing her powerful story of resilience against domestic violence and triumph over learning difficulties.

Remarkably, Alicia, struggling with dyslexia, defied expectations and excelled in her first semester of her Masters in Positive Psychology and earnt a high distinction.

Her remarkable journey serves as an inspiration, illustrating that despite confronting formidable challenges, Alicia emerged not just triumphant but as

a glimmer of hope, embodying the power of resilience, self-discovery, and the pursuit of purpose.

In 2021, Alicia created The Gratitude Method™, a transformative approach rooted in cultivating gratitude.

The genesis of this method traces back to 2018 when Alicia birthed the Little Black Book Gratitude; journal, initially crafted through photocopying as a personal endeavour.

Its humble origins soon evolved into a notable project, with Alicia printing 100 softcover journals that traversed borders, reaching over six countries.

Observing and watching the success of the initial venture, Alicia elevated the journal to a hardcover edition, releasing another batch of 100, which swiftly sold out within six months.

The impact was more than imagined, resonating with a diverse audience whose lives were positively influenced by adopting a gratitude-centric mindset.

Messages flooded in, attesting to the method’s efficacy in transformative ways, including aiding individuals grappling with profound issues like suicidal thoughts. Recognising the potency of her creation, Alicia took a strategic step by trademarking The Gratitude Method™; solidifying its unique identity.

Furthermore, she curated a collaborative effort, publishing a book featuring insights from 22 authors across Australia, amplifying the reach and impact of The Gratitude Method™.

Alicia’s journey stands as a testament to the profound ripple effect that intentional gratitude practices can have on individuals worldwide.

Alicia has overcome a lot of obstacles to become successful and now she’s passing on her knowledge and experience to the community. She’s empowering them and giving them a voice, thereby giving them the confidence, they need to shape them lives into one full of positivity rather than one of loneliness.

And that is the true superpower.

CAPTURING HEARTS THROUGH RECYCLING

In a remarkable display of talent and environmental consciousness, eight-year-old Archer Lorenz emerged victorious in the Fraser Coast Council’s ‘Waste to Art Competition,’ displayed at the Gatakers Art Gallery, securing the coveted People’s Choice Award.

Archer’s vibrant masterpiece, crafted entirely from recycled materials, caught the attention of both judges and the community.

The young prodigy showcased not only his instinctive artistic ability but also a mature stance on environmental protection that belies his age.

The winning creation was a meticulously assembled sculpture using ingeniously repurposed discarded items, transforming them into a visual feast.

Archer’s innovative use of materials sent a powerful message about the potential beauty hidden within waste, inspiring onlookers to reconsider their approach to consumption and disposal.

What sets Archer apart is not just his artistic prowess but also his profound understanding of the importance of environmental stewardship.

The young eco-artist expressed his commitment to raising awareness about reducing waste and protecting the planet for future generations.

“I wanted to show that even things people throw away can be turned into something amazing,” Archer said.

“We need to take care of our planet.”

Archer’s parents, beaming with pride, mentioned that their son has always displayed a keen interest in nature and recycling.

His journey into eco-art began as a simple family project and quickly evolved into a passion and a platform for advocacy.

The Fraser Coast Council applauded Archer’s contribution to the Waste to Art Competition, emphasising the importance of engaging younger generations in environmental initiatives.

The People’s Choice Award, determined by popular vote, reflected not only Archer’s artistic talent but also the community’s endorsement of his eco-friendly message.

As Archer Lorenz basks in the well-deserved limelight, his story serves as an inspiring testament to the potential impact that even the youngest members of society can have in shaping a more sustainable future.

HENRY (WILHELMUS) BREIKERS

Tell us about yourself...

My favourite colour is napthol crimson and I ride a Harley Davidson Switchback.

Born in Geleen, Holland, I came to Australia on the ship the Johan van Oldenbarnevelt, heading to Brisbane by way of the West African Coast, Freemantle and Sydney.

My wife and I have three children and I have one brother and two sisters who also live in Australia.

I date the start of my serious involvement in art to the 1970s, but I have made stuff up for as long as I can remember.

From constructing boats out of balsa wood on a small table in the hallway to losing my footy boots out of the train window on the way home from school, to being a bank teller to driving Brisbane Council buses. Followed by a job at TAFE.

What’s your most memorable arts or cultural experience?

Attending a recital given by Michael Nyman and his band at QPAC and seeing works by Frank Auerbach at the TATE in London. Both are contemporary and both have deep arts-theoretical underpinnings. They’re realist-abstract-conceptual and super inspiring.

And although it sounds like two, music and art go together so it’s really one.

Who inspires you?

Anyone inspires me who gets things done and has something to say that pushes ideas.

But after all is said and done, and in the fullness of time, if I have to nominate one person who inspires me at the moment it would be Anselm Kiefer or Emma Thorp or Tracey Emin or Damien Hirst or Jeff Koons or Guido Maestri or Gareth Sansom or Rick Amor or Benjamin Bratton or Kate Crawford or Stephen Edgar or Jeroen van Veen or Larry Siedentop or Jesus.

However, tomorrow will be a different day and probably a different inspiration.

Where do you feel most at home?

I am an immigrant, uprooted from his birthplace and dispossessed of all he held dear, and whose feelings about being transported were overlooked, teased by the locals of his new ‘home’ because of how he spoke and what he wore, never again to see his grandparents… but in spite of all that, enamoured of the landscape of his new place and well fed by its offerings, opportunities and abundances.

Although the idea of feeling most at home somewhere specifically/ architecturally/locally doesn’t make a lot of sense to me, I will say that I feel most at home wherever it is that I can get on with something artistic.

When is your next exhibition?

My art show “Eat the moon (this is not a dystopian parable)” opens at The HBRG on February 23 and it’s free.

I’d like to invite everyone to come along and see paintings, drawings and a group of dizzying/dazzling sculptures that people will find provocative and fun.

The exhibition will be opened by David Lewis and the catalogue essay written by Joseph Breikers.

INSPIRED TO KEEP LIVING HIS BEST LIFE!

Jared is a member of the Fraser Coast community and has dedicated his time to assisting community members with new jobs, showcasing our region and organising events for people to seek jobs matched to their passion. He is also a talented DJ bringing fun to the lives of people who live and visit the Fraser Coast.

One night after having a great time out with some mates, the unthinkable happened! As he was leaving a local establishment an incident occurred that changed his life forever.

Listening to the extent of his injuries was horrific. He had a fractured eye socket, fractured nose and a bulging disc in his neck. His injuries required significant treatment, which is still ongoing and has left him with shoulder pain, numbness in his fingers and impaired vision in the right eye.

Due to his extensive injuries, he required treatment away from home in Brisbane

and the Sunshine Coast. He was unable to continue working comfortably and required time off work unpaid. A family member lodged a nomination to request Jared be considered as a recipient of Rally for a Cause.

“The process was so easy, they contacted me within a week and within a couple of days they were paying for fuel and groceries. Rally for a Cause gave me the ability to heal. The worry of paying bills whilst not working went away, providing space and time for me to take care of myself. I can’t thank them enough, what they do is amazing.” -Jared Jared’s determination to continue to recover and strive to be the best version of himself post-accident is inspiring. His days are harder now and this unfortunate incident, changed his life. It is humbling to watch him smile, talk about helping others and continuing to be a valued member of our community.

We wish you all the best Jared! – Rally for a Cause

Have you faced any barriers in your career due to being a woman? If so, how did you overcome them?

I have been very fortunate to be surrounded by people that have always encouraged and inspired me to live my best life. My partner(husband) is my biggest fan. He has always said “Well, just do it! You get stuff done, so why not this? ”

My Grandmothers, Mum, Aunts, and extended family have always supported women in our family. The only barriers that I have ever faced is my own selfdoubt. But the village of strong women around me have always pushed me to achieve my goals.

How can we encourage more women to pursue entrepreneurship or senior leadership roles in their careers?

Be their biggest supporters! Lead by example and tell our daughters, nieces and all their friends how awesome they are. Ask “How can I help you achieve your dreams”.

Take them to any and every event around their interest and inspire them to reach for the top.

Introduce them to your tribe as soon as you can. The people that support you, support your young entrepreneurs. Motivated people, motivate others.

What is the most important message you want to send out to young women thinking about their careers?

You have your whole life ahead to “grow up”. Age is just a number. You can reinvent your self at any time. Don’t be limited by your fears, in fact if its not scary its not challenging you. So many people fear failure, but this is where we learn.

Any other notes you might wish to have mentioned….

Engaging in groups, service Clubs and online forums are the best source of knowledge. The people that are “doing” things in our community have the best contacts and ideas for your success. Use their knowledge and advice, Its free!

And READ, every day, read something educational. Expand your mind. It doesn’t have to be novel a day, but something that feeds your energy.

MICHELLE BYRNE

Have you faced any barriers in your career due to being a woman? If so, how did you overcome them?

I have been very lucky and feel that I have not had to face too many barriers in my career due to being a woman. I like to learn my job from the ground up and work hard, when it comes time to applying for a promotion within the company my track record and knowledge I have gained generally speaks for itself.

How can we encourage more women to pursue entrepreneurship or senior leadership roles in their careers?

It depends, everyone is different. Some women may be happy where they are and that’s ok, but if you are thinking of applying for a promotion or senior leadership role, just go for it. Apply for the job/ promotion, you never know it may just be your confidence holding you back, however, if you do not get the position, ask for feedback, learn from this and work on improving in these areas to give yourself a better chance the next time something comes up.

What is the most important message you want to send out to young women thinking about their careers?

Go for something that you love or are good at. If you do not get into the position you want, go for a smaller/ similar job that could lead into that roll and work your way up, you can learn so much more and it gives you a broader range of skills to take into your application for a promotion or new job.

Have you faced any barriers in your career due to being a woman?

If so, how did you overcome them?

I would not call these barriers, instead they are challenges, and I don’t believe they are gender defined. Every business owner, regardless of being man or woman, will experience challenges throughout their working career. Sometimes these challenges are personal, and you doubt yourself, sometimes they are economic or environmental, sometimes they are out of your control. Over the past 28 years in business, these challenges have made me grow stronger both mentally and emotionally. Every challenge overcome has enabled me to move forward with my business.

I learned a long time ago that if I was to wait for someone to come up with the solutions, map out the plan and give me the tools to implement... I would still be waiting.

It’s also OK to acknowledge when things don’t go right and to share these experiences with others. I have found that sometimes when you are ‘in the thick of it’, it is difficult to be objective about a situation or to arrive at a solution. So having the strength to be honest, to share it and give others permission to offer suggestions, to actually say ‘I’m not sure what I should do here’ and then to listen with an open mind and heart is the first step. The magic will happen from there.

How can we encourage more women to pursue entrepreneurship or senior leadership roles in their careers?

Finding a mentor who is like-minded, not necessarily in the same industry (sometimes it’s much better to have that distinction), who you can work with and learn from. Someone who will support you but at the same time, let you know if you are off track, someone who will keep you accountable to what you say and do and the promises you make to yourself.

I have sought out these people (both males and female) all of my working life and I continue to do so because my role in my business is ever changing and I want to continue to give my best to my clients, my staff members, my business partners and most of all to myself. My best advice ‘if you want to move ahead, take that first step’!

What is the most important message you want to send out to young women thinking about their careers?

Find true happiness in your work and trust yourself. Identify your strengths and weaknesses and develop them, but don’t try to be all things to all people. One of my favourite mantras has always been “Recognise the things you’re good at and outsource the rest”. Growth and success is not guaranteed in any area of life, you have to chase it, so get your running shoes on. You have to train and develop yourself for it, so drag out the gym gear. You have to fight for it, so pull on the boxing gloves, and you have to want it, so open your heart and your mind. Opportunities come to those who chase them – I don’t believe luck is ever in the equation.

When you realise your potential and access your inner strength, knowledge and power, miracles are known to happen, and the doors will unlock – you still have to open them and march in!!

Have you faced any barriers in your career due to being a woman? If so, how did you overcome them?

Reflecting on my career, I can’t say I’ve experienced significant barriers in my career. Though, I have definitely faced challenges both personally and professionally.

Early on in my career, I was juggling being a single Mum, working full-time, all while studying to become a financial planner. Being surrounded by passionate women at work and in my personal life I’ve been able to have a mindset of ‘I am exactly where I am supposed to be’, helping me gain perspective at times where I was being challenged.

How can we encourage more women to pursue entrepreneurship or senior leadership roles in their careers?

Encouraging women to pursue entrepreneurship or senior leadership roles in their careers is crucial for promoting diversity and empowerment in the workplace.

This can come through mentorship and networking - by bringing experienced and successful women together to offer guidance, support, and career advice. For me professionally, I’ve sought out, and continue to receive coaching and mentoring. It’s also important to me that I give back, and with a predominately female team in our financial planning practice, being a mentor is a highlight for me.

For a workplace’s culture to be inclusive, it’s important women feel supported, respected, and valued for their contribution. Working is a balancing act, between advancing our careers and enjoying life with our loved ones. In my experience and as a leader, fostering a flexible working environment allows our team to expand their career opportunities.

What is the most important message you want to send out to young women thinking about their careers?

For me, an important message to send out to young women thinking about their careers is one of empowerment and selfbelief. We come across people who doubt us, but we need to believe and have confidence in ourselves.

Have you faced any barriers in your career due to being a woman? If so, how did you overcome them?

I wouldn’t say I had barriers. To me a barrier would stop something and I wasn’t going to be stopped. It was more like obstructions or humps in the road. Ones, that you would work your way around or over.

Yes, there were a few. Being a new kid on the block (so to speak) up against the big, branded agencies, a single middle aged female starting a new business from scratch. I had to show how and why I and DSB Property Management would be different. I am a firm believer in actions speak loader than words and each obstacle placed in front of me, made me more determined to go through it and show my worth.

How can we encourage more women to pursue entrepreneurship or senior leadership roles in their careers?

Personally, I believe you must have passion for what you are doing or want to do. When you find that passion, then you can build your dream. I must admit, it can be hard and scary and you will want to give up….Just Don’t Give Up! and don’t let others dampen your dream and vision. What is the most important message you want to send out to young women thinking about their careers?

Create a plan on what it is your choosing to embark on. Speak to someone for insight and guidance. Join women’s groups, networking groups, get a business coach, and build your dream. With your passion, you will work through it. No matter how hard times get, just don’t give up. Any other notes you might wish to have mentioned?

When I started my business, I had a $5000 credit card, I printed flyers and presentation booklets and every day, I would pick an area in Hervey Bay and walk the streets doing letter box drops with the flyers. I would then door knock businesses that I felt would assist me with growing my business, banks, home loan companies etc. It’s not easy and with persistence it will pay off. DSB Property was born in May 2015 and still going strong.

Have you faced any barriers in your career due to being a woman? If so, how did you overcome them?

There is always some sort of barrier when it comes to business, I am not sure if they are directly related to sex, age or learning experience. We are taught as women to be more gentle and submissive. I think naturally that was never something I fully understood or accepted just because I am a female. The biggest thing when it comes to business is the support network you surround yourself with. It’s incredibly important to have people who are in your corner and lift you up when you’re having those hard moments.

How can we encourage more women to pursue entrepreneurship or senior leadership roles in their careers?

I think we are naturally starting to progress in this direction. If we teach young women to go for what is truly passion driven for them, it will naturally progress into entrepreneurship or leadership roles.

What is the most important message you want to send out to young women thinking about their careers?

Ask for a mentor, go and talk to people who are in the roles you want to be in. A lot of women want to share their knowledge and will happily guide and support, just put yourself out there!

FEAST YOUR EYES ON THIS

Nestled on the banks of the Burnett River amidst what was an old school shed and seafood processing site, lies a somewhat sleeping giant.

Known to locals as Bundy’s Biggest Beer Garden by the River, Riverfeast is performing a feat akin to Lazarus, making a welcomed comeback in 2024.

In BC (Before Covid) times, Fridays at Riverfeast were a “thing”. People from all kin and creed came together, where anyone could belong because the atmosphere radiated “community”. They ate, they danced, drank local beers, and watched a glorious sun set, perfectly punctuating an end to their working week. Fun times!

When the pandemic hit peak in 2021, as with many businesses in the hospitality sector, the patron restrictions, distancing, managing legislation, vaccinations, and a formidable list of procedural and legislative requirements, took its toll.

It became a reality that it was no longer viable to open the gates. It was a heartbreaking decision for owners Greg and Karen Wittkopp.

“We tried, we really did, to keep operating and open to the public – to offer some hope at a time that was so gloomy.

“But in the end, we had to make the tough decision and close. At the time, we had no idea just how long that

would be”.

The last couple of years has seen Riverfeast operate solely as a private function venue for hire. But towards the end of 2023, Greg and Karen decided it was time to open the Riverfeast gates once more.

“The old girl (Riverfeast) has so much to give. Location, space, river views, sunsets, two bars, and ample parking,” Karen said.

“We felt it was time to open the doors once more and share with people our little piece of paradise.”

Kicking off in February, on the first Friday of each month, Riverfeast gates opened to the public once more. A slightly different offering – a little less “Eat Street” and a little more “beer garden”, but with that same Riverfeast vibe is what’s on offer.

So, mark in your diaries for the first Friday of each month from 4pm, to enjoy a sunset by the river with a brew in hand and a bite to eat as you toe tap to some dulcet tunes.

On occasion you’ll also be treated to a pop-up local artisan market where you’ll find a treasure or three!

To stay up-to-date head to the Riverfeast socials Facebook/Instagram - @riverfeastbundaberg or head to their website www.riverfeast.com.au

THREE GENERATIONS OF INTERIOR DESIGNERS

HOW THE INTERIOR DESIGN BUSINESS HAS EVOLVED SINCE 1960.

Alive Magazine Wide Bay | www.alivemag.com.au 26
STYLE IT

When you studied interior design in the 1960s you were trained in textile and design. You had to be able to make the components of the job specified. The skilled stitching was practiced on making your own garments among other things like upholstering, cushions, and curtains.

I still remember my mother talking about her first paid job. The job was located on Sydney Harbour. The brief was to design, make and install floor-to-ceiling curtains and a full linen package to a fully custom round bed.

Imagine loading up your car full of fabric books with bookmarks and spending hours with your client blending the brief, then having to measure and order by post, hoping you have the right amount, or the dye match is the same.

This high-level interior design still exists but we are so lucky to have the choice of readymade cushions, throws, and luxury linen to give your project a touch of glamour.

Second generation designer, Amanda, brings the skills she has learned through her mum when looking at fabrics and how some things should be made and presented to your client.

Amanda teams up with her daughter, Victoria, who is a new generation of designer – presenting via the internet, running client portals, social media, and other new-age design software.

New technology is always evolving but having a real person with our personal touch will always be in vogue.

Thanks Mum! Happy International Women’s Day.

TRUST THE PROCESS

Life can certainly throw us some curveballs; no-one escapes trouble in this world.

Overwhelming challenges are entirely personal and are often accompanied by feelings of helplessness, sadness, and even depression.

But the light at the end of the tunnel is the fact that these seasons will, with time, come to a close. That is why it is so important to ‘trust the process’. It involves letting go of control, of preconceived expectations, of disappointment, and shifting your focus to those things that bring you joy.

Trusting means there’s no need for anxiety about whatever happens because it’s all part of the journey of life.

Also, seeking inspiration from those who have walked through similar situations, seeking wise counsel, setting boundaries, actively hoping for a better future.

I have been inspired by many people who stand up for integrity and truth. The following quotes are from the faith-filled, optimistic and encouraging Shelley Giglio who is based in the USA.

5 things you should quit right now:

1. Trying to please everybody.

2. Fearing change.

3. Living in the past.

4. Putting yourself down.

5. Overthinking.

And, in case retail therapy ticks your box, we have collated a range of items to treat yourself or to gift someone who needs a touch of your encouragement.

AWESOME AURAS

Welcome to March’s edition of The 6th Sense. In this column I explore some of the questions mystically minded readers may have about the spiritual realms.

This month, my focus is your energy field, also known as your aura.

I’d like to begin by busting a myth.

When I attended psychic circles in the early 1990s, I was told that only ‘living things’ had an aura.

This confused me, because once I began to see auras, I saw them around everything, ‘living’ or not. As well as the beautiful energy fields around trees, people and animals, I saw auras around the edges of inanimate objects like clouds, chairs, pictures on the wall, mountains and so on. Finally, I realised that everything on the planet that seems solid is actually comprised of rapidly moving energy. This energy creates an energetic field – an aura.

If you gaze at the tops of trees at dusk or let your eyes relax as you observe a mountain against the sky, you may see a clear energy outline that seems to waft around their edges. This is how auras are first seen – an edge of clear, fluid energy surrounding what you are observing. Another great way to see auras is to hold your hand up in a room at night and watch the energy flowing from your fingertips. When you put two hands together, touching just at the fingertips, and then slowly draw them apart, you may see the energy stretching in long lines between them. I remember being very excited when I could first see auras. Practise improves this skill.

The aura of the human body is quite complex. There are a series of layers within the aura and each layer

has a different function. Our aura is the record keeper of our life. Our physical health, thoughts, feelings, memories, challenges, joys and even spiritual experiences such as patterns from past lives are stored here.

When we consider that our feelings and thoughts affect our aura, it’s easy to see why keeping a positive outlook is important for our wellbeing. Our aura is impacted by our emotions. If we feel depressed, lonely, or sad for any length of time, the aura becomes less vibrant and pulls closer towards our body in protection. We tend to withdraw into ourselves.

When we revel in our creativity, enjoy time with people we love or feel the passion of inspiration, our energy field expands and shines brightly. We trust others, are open hearted, are empathic and willing to engage in life.

Taking care of ourselves with good nutrition and attention to our physical health also promotes a vibrant energy field. Unhealthy habits, not surprisingly, have a negative effect on the strength and beauty of our aura.

I’ll continue to discuss the human aura next month, delving into its colours and also how relationships impact our energy levels.

Until then, have a wonderful month. If you’d like to receive an uplifting Oracle Card message each day, feel welcome to join my free Facebook group, Your Intuitive Gifts At Work.

THE 6TH SENSE

YEAH THE GIRLS!

In light of International Women’s Day and a recent podcast I did with Emily Wilson, I’d like to pay tribute to the women that inspire me.

I’m surrounded by women; mothers, sisters, aunties, grandmothers and friends that are constantly progressing in life. I could compress this article to include only the parts of how these women inspire me when it comes to money, but truth be told the solid foundations these women lay are the ones that build lives of wealth and richness.

That said there is nothing more up my alley than commending the women around me for how amazing they are.

Who better to celebrate than the nurturers, the carers, the glue, the foundation. Our lives thrive on the contribution that women have in our society. They are the givers. The champions. I am blessed to be one and be surrounded by many. It amazes me to watch how they lead, raise children, manage families, work and do all the things and still expect more of themselves.

I recently watched a video that filmed a job interview. It was unknowingly to the applicants, an interview for the job of a mother. The job description was endless and the closing line, you do not get paid, this job is for free. Once disclosed it was the job of a mother one of the applicants happily exclaimed “mums are the best.” Mother or not. Women hold this place in many relationships. When I speak of foundation I do think of women.

I think of the women in society creating change. Exchanging their time and money for a greater good. Raising children and teaching the ways in which to lead and create a greater society for the next generation. It’s generally not about them. What they do is about others and that is where the gold lies. Their lives, their struggles, their worries are ammo used to better the world in which their kids and their kids’ kids will grow up in.

Money makes the world go around. Money is power. From a bottom to top perspective, the more women are championed on the ground level the more solid of a society we will have to build upon. From stay-athome mums to small business owners to CEO’s. Thank you to all the women striving to make their money work for change. I know so many of you and I commend you! Keep being your awesome selves and today we celebrate you!

THE BEST TIME OF THE YEAR!

MBURRUM

arch is a fantastic time of year and with a change of season brings some great fishing ahead.

Queenfish, barramundi, whiting, flathead and trevally have been reported. Out the front tuna have been about around the Burrum 8 mile along with the odd spotted mackerel.

LOCAL REEFS

Recent rains over the past few months will do the local reef scene some good this can fire up the inshore reefs. Grass sweetlip, parrot, cod, coral trout and blackall have been reported. Soft vibes and prawn imitation lures have been working well on the reefs.

PLATYPUS BAY

Platypus Bay has seen tuna move in the bay over the last few weeks. Working stick baits, soft plastics and metal slugs has seen the best results. Spotted and school mackerel have been found under the tuna along with golden trevally. Anglers looking for a feed can find good numbers of scarlets at night on cut baits.

URANGAN PIER

Live yabbies have been the best baits for the whiting. Bream, barramundi, GT’s and flathead have been other captures from the Pier. Working the night tides will see the best results for those targeting whiting.

SANDY STRAITS

Salmon have been reported down the straits around the Diamonds and Ungowa. Working the deeper holes and drains with soft vibes and prawn imitations has seen great results. Barra are often in the same location and can be some lucky dipping between barra and salmon at times. Whiting have been caught on the western flats along Fraser Island with grunter and flathead also about. Whiting have been taken on small poppers but it is hard to beat live yabbies particularly when fishing at night.

SAIL ON, CAPTAIN!

As the Captain of your life, there are times you will spend adventuring out at sea, and others moored safely in port, gathering supplies and charting your next course.

Whichever port you may find yourself at, be sure to always be ready for the next adventure, for a ship was never designed to be moored for too long.

Adventures await the brave and the bold, and you Captain, have all that you need to sail forth and discover new lands.

There are times in our lives when we can feel the need to rest and recoup before the next journey but remember to always be ready to set sail should the opportunity arise. It takes strength and determination to sail uncharted waters, but you have all that you need to succeed, you just need to ask.

As are the waters you traverse, this life runs on ebbs and flows. Accepting the flow of life is your greatest strength, for as a Captain it is always important to be ready to change your course in the uncertainty of the seas.

Allowing for change and seeking new adventure is what makes your journey the best it can be. Whilst it is comfortable to sail the waters that you know, you have not been put here to do only that.

So my Captain, be sure to set your sights as far as you can see. Embrace the adventure and be sure to enlist a good crew for no sailor should ever go forth alone.

When you lack the skills required, remember that there are others there to help you through.

Set your vision and spread the word and others that resonate will soon board your ship and look forward to joining you on your great adventure too.

Once out at sea, embrace the weather and the tides as the most fulfilling adventures in life are often the ones that come with the most challenges to overcome. Rather than turning back when times get tough, tighten your sails and be ready to face what may come head on. You’ve got this!

So, untie your ship from its berth and venture out of port. Should the destination be unclear, follow your heart and set sail anyway, allowing yourself to be guided in the right direction by the feelings deep inside, trusting that all authentic sailors sailing a worthy cause are protected out at sea.

While arriving at a new destination is always to be rejoiced, it is the journey there that brings the most satisfaction.

Be proud Captain, and wherever you end up, know that you never gave up!

MARCH INSPIRATION

How apt that this month’s theme is Inspirations, just like this column!

There is a saying that goes” ‘Do what you love, and love what you do’, which I have framed, hanging in my clinic. It is so true! When you love what you do nothing is a chore, and I love guiding you all with this column every month!

Capricorn Dec 22 -Jan 19

This month will be an amazing time for you to explore your true colours. Have you been hiding your talents? Well, let me tell you, you have nothing to fear because you are well supported. So, take a big deep breath, and a big leap of faith because inspiration is about to strike! You better believe it!

Aquarius Jan 20 - Feb 18

March looks like it is going to be a cruisey month for you. This card is your reminder to slow down, recharge, and just let things happen. I believe you are on top of things, so no more stressing and just go with the flow! You have so got this!

Pisces Feb 19 - Mar 20

Is there someone you need to make peace with? Perhaps you have to make peace with and forgive yourself for having such high expectations of yourself. Cut yourself some slack and be kind to you. While you are at it, also give yourself a big hug. Well done!

Aries Mar 21 - April 19

Mmm, Aries, have you been trying to or wanting to diet? This card suggests that you look at what you are eating and drinking this month. It is a good time to boost your immune system with a variety of fruit and vegetables. Be mindful to eat a variety of different coloured ones too. It is also a month of positive change for you, so look out for that.

Taurus April 20 - May 20

Be on the lookout for challenges or delays this month Taurus. Perhaps with travel plans, or with just plain traffic holdups. My advice, don’t lose your cool, or the plot, just ride it out. Sit back, be patient, and allow the flow to take as long as it is going to take. You have no control over this.

Gemini May 21 - June 20

Unclench those fists Gemini! Something this month may want to make you scream out or be a source of frustration. When you are in a state like that, clear logical thought does not come easily. Rather than reacting, take a step back, breathe, and put the palm of one hand on your forehead. This is known as activating your stress release points. It now won’t take long to calm down and find a solution. Good luck!

Cancer June 21- July 22

It looks like March will be the start of a new beginning for you. How exciting! Something has changed and a past chapter has closed. This will allow a new chapter to open and only you know what this could be. With new beginnings on the agenda, it is a good time to set clear intentions on this and watch it come to fruition.

Leo July 23 - Aug 22

Change is in the air Leo. Could this be a career change? It might be time to sort out your resume because the timing is on point. There of course, may be change in other areas of your life, and I feel these changes will be positive for you. I want to say clear the decks because something different is on the way!

Virgo Aug 23 - Sept 22

This month may be cause for a celebration! I see nothing but joy and happiness surrounding you. Another interpretation could be, do what makes you happy. Often, we put our needs last or hide what we really want. Life truly is too short, so get out there and have some fun!

Libra Sept - 23 - Oct 23

March is looking very prosperous for you, Libra! You are in the flow, and everything seems to be aligning for you. Well done! You are positively radiating! I feel you are on cloud nine about something you have been working towards for a while now. Reap the benefits! On another note, believe you are truly worthy of good things, because you deserve it!

Scorpio Oct 24 - Nov 21

I am wondering if you need to acquire some sort of new knowledge this month. You know the saying; you can’t teach a dog new tricks? Maybe it’s time to broaden your horizons and your learning! Also, there may be something you need to put more focus on. Especially, if you have been neglecting something. This may even mean putting more focus on yourself.

Sagittarius Nov 22 - Dec 21

Have you been feeling a bit out of sorts recently? Perhaps you have been holding back or being a bit fearful of something. This month, I want you to know you are supported on many levels, so surrender any worries to the universe. I also feel March will provide a lot of peace and tranquillity for you as well. Enjoy this time!
