CAMPING WITH JARRAD ANTHONY

’Tis the season to send your southern dwelling loved-ones a picture of you in summer clothing, bathed in warm sunshine while they shiver, inside, wrapped in all the layers. Apologies to all my Victorians reading this (sorry not sorry; come visit!).

It’s the time of year we (Queenslanders) get to enjoy the warm days and cool nights. We get spoiled by the softer light and extra magical sunsets. We also get excited to celebrate the unofficial ceremony that is the annual wearing of the uggies, jacket and beanie.

Oh and more topically, we get to win the State of Origin. At this point I’d like to note I’m grateful there’s no comments section in a magazine.

What a perfect time to go camping!

If only there were somewhere special to go… Somewhere completely world class. Somewhere with so much biodiversity it feels like you could have travelled four corners of the globe in a day. And if it could be situated ‘just there’ that’d be great. It exists? It’s K’gari (Fraser Island)? We’re definitely spoiled here on the Fraser Coast.

One man who knows a thing or two not just about the island but camping over there as well, is a long time friend of mine, Jarrad Anthony.

Having run tours on the Island for over nine years, and having perpetually visited the stunning slice of wilderness his whole life, I got the sense that K’gari was not just a destination but a silent character in Jarrad’s story.

The way he spoke about it was quite beautiful to hear.

“There wouldn’t be a year where I haven’t done a couple of [K’gari] trips.”

He goes on to tell me a classic coming of age story— receiving his driver’s license and the next day being on the island with a car full of his mates for a ‘boys trip’. We laugh as he humbly recalls making several ‘rookie mistakes’ and learning from them the hard way.

Still but a wee teen was Jarrad when he had his first experience leading tour groups on the island with Palace Adventures. Operating behind the scenes in the workshop at the time, there were instances where during the briefing it became apparent that the foreigners who signed up for the tours couldn’t actually drive a manual.

“You’re going to the island for three days.”

He recalls his boss giving him the news. The subtext in this exchange is that Jarrad was being asked to be the driver for the self drive tour group. This was the beginning of a solid two years guiding camping tours on Fraser.

Clearly the bug bites, and this initial situation leads to many more adventures (sorry I meant ‘jobs’) all over the country.

The next chapter of his career takes place in Alice Springs. He becomes based there as he leads tour groups to Uluru (Ayers Rock), Kings Canyon and surrounds.

As the company, Adventure Tours, expands, so too do the tour offerings. Before too long, he is now doing long distance tours from Alice Springs to Darwin, visiting all the iconic highlights along the way.

As he accumulates tickets, he finds himself as the sole guide to also have accreditation for Kakadu National Park. Fortuitously, he gets the highly sought after job of taking groups into the breathtaking region.

To give some perspective, these are nine day tours

right into the heart of the land including a real taste of outback life.

“That was all swag based camping, cooking over fires, that sort of thing.”

Then Jarrad would say goodbye to that group and hello to another that would become his charge for the return journey to Darwin.

The next big challenge came when he got an opportunity to do a training trip to the truly ‘out of this world’ Kimberly’s region in Western Australia.

“Later that year, right place right time, they were short on Kimberly drivers. Normally you have to wait 3-4 years to get a Kimberly’s gig but I just got that straight up.”

He recounts his fortune and shows his character explaining an exchange when after only one training trip was asked if he was ready and he replied “Absolutely!”

Then shares,

“Because I hate training, I’d rather just get out there and do my own thing.”

We spend a significant chunk of the chat going into more detail about this part of his career. I could tell this was especially memorable for him as he vividly points pictures of true remoteness and beauty.

“Apart from the bugs and stuff out there, the views and the stars… It’s just insane.”

And on a more personal note,

“It was just so good. I had everything I needed. I’d sleep so well, right through the night, never wake up in the middle of the night.”

Not just a job but a lifestyle, Jarrad goes on to explain he struggled to sleep inside on a bed around that time!

“I actually found it difficult to sleep inside after the nine months in the Kimberly’s. It was so strange.

Getting used to a bed again and the silence especially. It was so different to what became normal to me.”

He would only spend an average of three nights per month in a bedroom and at one point he chose to just set up his swag outside and sleep there instead. After the season he recalls it taking two full weeks to re-adjust to regular inside living.

I’ve known Jarrad for close to two decades at this point. We met via the tourism industry up in the beautiful Whitsundays.

We reminisce on the ‘good old days’ and laugh about how we thought we were grown up and knew everything back then.

Long term readers may remember a piece I wrote on another close friend and how much of a delight it was to take the time and focus to ‘interview’ someone you know so well.

This was another of those experiences for me.

“I’ve lived in Airlie Beach, lived in Alice Springs, lived in Darwin, spent a lot of time in Broome; these are all really beautiful places, but they never really felt like home.”

Based back in Hervey Bay, Jarrad now has a position somewhat resembling a ‘real job’, as an operations manager for SeaLink K’gari.

My look of surprise is quickly replaced as he details the amount of time he actually gets to spend on the island.

“I just love getting over there.”

The official theme of this issue is CAMPING but to me it has felt more like friendship. Maybe they’re not mutually exclusive? Maybe that’s the sub-theme and this is your reminder to reconnect with your people and get outside!

And if it gets to be on that beautiful, big island that’s sitting patiently in our backyard, even better!

CRAZY FOR SOLUTIONS

If you’re *old* like me, you’ll still remember camping back in the ‘good old days’…

Our station wagon would be loaded up with our heavy duty canvas tent complete with a million poles and guide ropes, that took so much time and effort to erect it’s a wonder more parents didn’t get divorced! It weighed a ton and took up the entire boot of the car leaving only room for the bare necessities. Windows down, heads out the windows (no seatbelts in sight!), we’d be packed to the hilt and on our way.

Ahhh the ‘80’s summer holidays, long days spent at the beach covered in colourful zinc, kerosene lamps dimly lighting up the surrounds at night, and an esky full of food floating in melted ice - it was all part of the adventure.

Once we grew a little older, we graduated into our very own saggy little A frame tents. With only two end poles and one zip in the middle they were much simpler to erect. But beware of the wind and creepy crawliesthere was no protection here!

Fast forward to the 90s when the lightweight dome tent became a game changer. Could camp life get any easier, we wondered?

It could and it did. In fact now we can expect most of the creature comforts of home to come with us. While we can look back longingly to those simpler days, our expectations of what makes a camping trip successful, have changed a lot.

Comfort is key. We want to arrive at our camp spot and get camping. We want cold food and drinks, an organised kitchen, flush toilet and to BBQ in bright, energy-efficient light in the evenings.

Technology and innovation have upped our camping comforts and checking out the neighbours set-ups and gadgets, is one way to work out ways to improve our own.

One person, who has no doubt been the envy of most of his camp trip neighbours, is Jason Hogan owner of Crazy Dog Canvas. A longtime lover of the great outdoors, with a creative mind that seeks out a solution to every problem, you’ll find no shortage of clever innovation in his camper trailer.

His super power involves being able to take a simple piece of canvas and transform it into something you never knew you needed. He simplifies camp life with his clever canvas contraptions, focusing on functionality and organisation.

His passion is evident in his excitement about one of his latest canvas inventions - the fishing rod holder.

To overcome the burden of transporting delicate fishing rods in vehicles- he’s attached his rod holder to the outside of his vehicle with a simple sail rack. It’s a handy bag with multiple uses, Jason explains.

“You can fit two two-piece rods down each end, and leave everything rigged up. Then in the center I’ve got a couple of pockets and a clear pouch where you can put tackle and items like your lip grippers and soft plastics, whatever you need, and then zip it back up and off you go.

“I saw the need after going to Fraser Island. It was such a pain pulling all the rods out and setting them up. As you get older, you get lazier,” Jason concedes.

“I saw a problem and then I thought about a solution to fix it.”

Jason hasn’t always been a creator of all things canvas.

It wasn’t until 2012, when he started working for a local camper trailer manufacturer, that he acquired the skills to sew canvas.

• Granny Flats &

• Support local suppliers

After a few years the opportunity arose for him to go out on his own. However, six months in the situation changed. Jason was left with a canvas business but no market for his tents.

He realised that if he wanted to be successful, he would need to diversify his product from what was already on the market.

His sewing skills became an advantage and gave him the ability to create products from a less ‘trained’ viewpoint and he was able to come up with sometimes unconventional solutions.

Jason quickly worked out that in a market dominated by overseas imports one must find ways to create a product not found elsewhere. His belief is that here in Australia, where the manufacturing of products is much more costly, there is no point in copying products that are already made cheaper elsewhere.

The key to success is in taking products already available and modifying them – a skill that comes naturally to Jason and has given him the ability to succeed in a potentially challenging market.

“For instance, to compete with much cheaper Chinese products we have to be efficient and avoid overengineering designs,” Jason said

“We used to sew a bag out of six panels, but I came up with the idea to just use two panels where possible. Not only is it stronger, with less stitching to come apart, but also much more cost effective,” he explains.

A quick look inside his own camper trailer reveals another of his innovations - guaranteed to be an inspiration to others seeking to get better organised.

Attached to the inside of each door are his very popular modular canvas storage pockets that come in all sizes and fit a variety of purposes. Plates, cutlery, utensils, paper towel, and toiletries are secured in place, with everything at his fingertips while saving a whole lot of space.

However, as much as Jason would love to focus on creating something new, it’s always a fine line between doing what you love and keeping a business financially viable. The better part of his time these days is spent making canvas tents for larger manufacturersworking closely with local mob Dynamic Slide-On Campers and Sunshine Coast based Zone RV.

This is not to say that he has put his creations to the side, as it’s quickly apparent how busy his mind isconstantly looking to improve and create things most of us take for granted.

“I get bored quick, so I’ve got to make another product, design something else,” Jason admits with a smile.

“I can be one to go flat out at times when I’m creating, but then I have to tell myself, ‘hang on mate, you really should stop and set yourself up better’. I love systems and spreadsheets but I can be a bit lazy in the way that I’m not completely organised in other areas.”

Thankfully, even with Jason’s amazing brain, constantly firing on all cylinders, it turns out he’s human like all of us.

Now, imagine going back to those camp trips in the early days, and just think, if we managed to camp for weeks on end in our very basic tents, it would be no surprise that our newfound access to the outdoor comforts we have today, would make us never want to go home.

But as our modern world dictates that we need to work to keep up with the lifestyle we enjoy today, reality kicks in. I guess the one saving grace we have is that, thanks to the inventive nature of creatives like Jason from crazydogcanvas.com.au, a quick weekend getaway is easily achieved, given the incredible range of innovative camping products we have on the market today.

Time to get packing, and head to the great outdoors!

LEADER OF THE DINGO ADVENTURE PACK

Ashley Needham was behind the wheel of his dad’s Ferguson tractor and FJ40 ute from a young age, navigating muddy tracks and terrain on the family’s property in Papua New Guinea.

Four-wheel-driving, combined with a passion for bush walking, hiking and camping, just runs through the veins of the owner of Fraser Dingo 4WD Adventures in Hervey Bay.

This massive part of his childhood ultimately led to establishing one of Hervey Bay’s biggest and longstanding 4WD adventure businesses.

“When I look back, I think I’ve had about 10 lives,” Ashley said with a laugh.

“Where I grew up was pretty rough on a tropical island in the middle of nowhere. I had the best childhood ever.

“Dad used to put me on the tractor, and he’d be in his office doing bookwork and I’d be driving this thing around and around the property with only a small gap where I would drive between our yard and a cliff face that went straight down … there was no cotton wool for me.

“I progressed to a short-wheel-based FJ40 with three Ford gears, and I’m sure the brakes weren’t that great in it.

“In the wet season I’d test myself trying to get through the tracks and it gave me great driving experience.”

One of Ashley’s most memorable experiences was a trip to the Red Centre in Central Australia in his 20s, with all his family on a self-guided 4WD convoy through desert plains, rocky gorges, mountain ranges and camping at Ayres Rock.

“We camped at Ayres where the whole Azaria Chamberlan thing happened, so we called ourselves the “Dingo Crew” with the cars being named Dingo 1, 2, 3, 4 etc.

“And now every morning when we’re sending out the tours it’s dingo 1, 2, 3 and so on. It’s weird how that all happened.”

The qualified National Park Ranger has had a variety of outdoor-based jobs over the years but in 2010 came one of his biggest adventures and challenges yet.

While driving buses for a local tour company on K’gari, Ashley was constantly stopped by people on self-drive tours to give directions, help with getting the right tyre pressure or answering general 4WD questions that should have been covered by the

hire companies’ safety briefings.

It was right at the time too many accidents by self-drive tourists forced the Government to introduce regulated tag-a-long tours which meant that only drivers over 21 could drive a vehicle in a convoy behind an experienced guide.

Ashley felt there was room in the market for someone with his experience and knowledge.

Someone who would really take the time to make sure his guests had the best experience but also had the knowledge they needed to safely tackle the biggest Heritage-listed sand island in the world.

“So, it was a golden opportunity to enter the market,” Ashley said.

Ashley started Fraser Dingo 4WD adventures from a small shed in Urangan with options for hiking, with or without camping gear and a handful of vehicles for self-guided tours.

His wife Jane continued her full-time job as an art teacher to keep the couple financially afloat while the business got off the ground.

Ashley said it was a tough gig being the new kid on the block.

He was determined to build a business on the premise of safety and offer something unique to those wanting to fully experience the magic of K’gari.

Ashely’s own hour briefing is complimented by the mandatory Government DVD which could potentially save lives for people who have never driven on sand before.

They have even created a safety briefing option for the hearing impaired and translation sheets for non-English speaking guests.

“From the get-go, we have always done a very thorough safety briefing with our customers, and they have been extremely thankful for that.

“If they have a good experience they will come back and recommend you.

“We do a full, complimentary itinerary for the guests so they know where to be, how to drive to the tides and know how long it will take to get from point A to B.

“Then we get them home closer to the ferry at the end of their trip.”

The business continued to grow, the fleet of vehicles got bigger as Ashley introduced their signature product called The Couples 4wd Camper – a self-contained 4WD with a double bed and all equipment provided.

There were so many times when I was up against a brick ball with Covid and fires, but we just kept going.”

Jane said that’s when things really fired up.

“We came into the market with a five-seater 60 series Landcruiser and the Couples Camper with a bed in the back.

“We were innovative at the time and it’s still working. We are the only ones that offer that.

“It’s Ashely’s resilience that has kept us going and his foresight to be innovative enough to stay ahead of the game,” Jane said.

“It has been a constant evolvement and we’re always constantly improving,” Ashley added.

“There was no rule book about 4WD hire so I just had to teach myself and I just never gave in.

“There were so many times when I was up against a brick ball with Covid and fires, but we just kept going.”

The business also gained the permits to do the guided tagalong tours in 2014 and now, 14 years on since opening, it’s thriving.

So much so that Jane left her teaching job to work alongside Ashley, and even Jane’s daughter Ayeisha has been involved as a powerhouse behind their social media and marketing campaigns.

The fleet of four-wheel-drives has now grown to about 30 and the ever-growing team offer a great range of options for youth adventures (backpackers), families, couples and singles from all over the world to discover K’gari.

The business now operates out of purpose-built facility in Urangan where the bookings, vehicle cleaning and mechanical repairs are all done on site.

Jane said it was imperative to remain innovative and offer a great range of options for their guests like camping with or without hire equipment, hiking with or without a guide, and Luxury Hiking where the guests just sit back at night and relax in deluxe accommodation,

enjoy gourmet meals and private 4WD transfers.

They are also the only business to hold a permit for pack-free camping hikes.

Both Ashley and Jane absolutely adore K’gari and love hearing about their guests’ positive experiences after their adventure.

“It is one of the most amazing places in the world to walk,” Ashley said.

“I have walked all over the world, and I tell people it just doesn’t get any better than this.

“Every place on K’gari has its own special magic and it changes every day over there.”

The couples’ favourite spots are Lake Boomanjin and the Valley of Giants.

“We go through that area a lot on our walks, and we just sit there and listen to the abundance of bird life.

There is an amazing amount of birds there,” Jane said.

“It has an amazing body of water and people don’t usually swim in there a lot so it’s a really lovely space.

“The Valley of Giants is also a really special space that we love to show to the hikers,” Ashley added.

“Walking in from the Happy Valley end from the M12 to M11, is just amazing.

“There are trees in the forest that are absolutely huge that just go on and on.

“It’s an amazing spot.”

So, if you are looking for a truly unique way to experience K’gari be sure to visit www. fraserdingo4wdhire.com.au

“I really enjoy meeting all the different types of customers and providing a service that ends with them being on cloud nine at the end of their trip,” Ashley said.

“That’s when you know you’ve done a good job.”

SPLITTERS FARM GLAMOROUS CAMPING

Right, I am just going to rip the band-aid off and tell you straight.

I do not like camping. It confuses me.

A complicated nylon pod, you must pitch yourself, while cursing your ancestors about bent poles, and whoever packed it last time did a rubbish job. Then there’s marking your territory on undefined ‘sites” down off-beaten tracks through overgrown, generally untamed national bushland, ideally next to water not-ideally next to neighbours. Camping involves some degree of discomfort in exchange for outdoor wonder; a terrible sleep, disorienting midnight trips to perform perfunctory toilet visits, the loss of any sense of reason at 7am as your desperate attempts to light the Coleman for your morning coffee – coffee you’ve earned – become apparently futile.

So, when my editor casually mentioned that the theme for our next magazine issue would be ‘camping’, from what you now know of me, you can imagine how akin to a “rabbit in a set of headlights” I was feeling! My mind swirled with thoughts of damp tents, flat airbeds, and persistent mosquitoes. Yes, I

have been camping before, twice in fact. You didn’t think I would publicly declare my vehement dislike of one of our nation’s most cherished traditions, rites of passage, and quintessential Aussie experiences rolled into one, without actually being 100% certain?

So, I began to wonder if perhaps I could look at this an opportunity for myself, a gal with a penchant for high thread count sheets, to explore a different side of this camping lark, one that might reveal the hidden charms of the great outdoors in ways I had never considered.

Enter Splitters Farm and their glamping (“glamorous camping”) tents!

As I drive through the gates of this sprawling 166acre working farm, animal rescue and lifestyle accommodation property located just outside Bundaberg, the air is filled with the sweet scent of blooming flowers, dulcet tones of mooing cows and the gentle hubbub of the farm animals. With both the breathtaking beauty of the landscape stretching out before me and the embracing welcome from the staff, I’m feeling most peaceful and it’s setting the stage,

for a what I hope, is a delightfully indulgent campingnot-camping experience.

I am directed to Charbray, one of eight riverfront “glampers” on the property. I realise I’m exhaling with a sigh of relief…. This is most definitely my kind of kingsized bed, private bathroom “tent”. These luxurious canvas glamping tents make for a comfortable and stylish retreat, with every detail thoughtfully curated to ensure maximum comfort and relaxation, whilst keeping you connected to nature.

For me, it’s the little details that add up to make the biggest impact. From the “Welcome to Splitters” card, the toiletries range, Sheridan bath robes, and fluffy white towels, to a myriad of pillows, fresh blooms and little acts of thoughtfulness, it was obvious that “customer experience” was cornerstone in the decision making process of Farmer Carly and Farmer Ash, the owners of Splitters Farm.

It was however the morning after what I can only describe as the best sleep I have had in years; the real highlight occurred at around 8am in the form of baked goods. Delivered to my door and snuggly wrapped in a linen tea towel were warm flaky croissants and sourdough with farm fresh honey and homemade strawberry jam. I languidly devoured these tasty morsels while sitting on the outdoor deck, with my barista made coffee (coffee van on site!) watching the river, amused by two geese – Cheese and Quackers.

As check-out time rolled around, I was met on the footpath by owner Farmer Carly herself! She asked if I had enjoyed my stay and what I thought of the glampers – as it turns out, not a lover of camping herself, the glampers were Carly’s love project and she personally project managed, designed, and decorated each of them with her unique style. “I wanted each of the glampers to offer those personal touches, and an authenticity whilst being a little bit wow!” she commented.

As we walked down towards reception together, she invited me to join her in saying good morning to her three new rescues, Loco, Sahara and Alice, camels all the way from Elbow Creek, saved from an excruciatingly sad life. I had no idea camels were so friendly! After letting out the sound of childlike glee, Carly looked at me and replied simply – “connection and wonder”.

“When you stay at Splitters this is what we want you to experience - It’s all about connection -whether that be to self, loved ones or nature”. At that very moment I understood the idea of camping and what it represented.

I am not a camping-convert by any stretch of the imagination, but whether you’re a glamper, camper or caravanner, I am sure we can all agree on the joy and wonder of feeling connected, and the neverending sense of awe the great outdoors provides us with.

FINANCING YOUR LIFESTYLE ASSETS

Did you know you can finance your lifestyle assets such as camper trailers, caravans, boats and jet skis? As these assets are not classed as primary assets there are certain lenders that finance these toys better than others. When going through dealer finance you will notice that there are particular finance deals that offer a low interest rate at a certain price that is non-negotiable.

Disclaimer: Don’t be fooled here! The reason this is a “deal” is because your purchase price is set. You may be getting a low interest rate but you cannot have the price reduced because the dealer is not going to lose on both sides of the fence. They’re not in business to lose money hence why the parameters of this “deal” are set in stone.

To get the best deal overall it is in your favour to negotiate your purchase price and then contact us to get the most competitive finance. As brokers we have many lenders on our panel and have the options at our fingertips. This leaves you with the power to negotiate on price and on your finance. As I will always say “it is best to know all of your options.” You can then rest assured you have all bases covered and you know that whatever way you choose to go is the best way for you.

You can also buy these assets privately. Again there are many lenders that will allow the purchase from a private seller. There are also multiple was to finance a used asset. These are via a unsecured loan or secured loan. The process is a little longer with a secured loan as the seller and the asset have to be

identified, whereas with an unsecured loan the bank pays you the money direct and you pay the seller. In this case there is no need for the bank to be involved in what you are purchasing. This is a quicker and simpler way to finance a used asset but please be aware it is more costly as it is higher risk for the bank to lend you money with no security offered over the asset you’re buying, hence “unsecured” loan.

TRAVELLING TO UNKNOWN DESTINATIONS

This year is the 10th Year of the Fraser Coast Dunga Derby will see the teams leaving the Fraser Coast and heading out on a big 5-day camping charity car rally, raising funds for the local charity Rally for a Cause.

The theme of the rally is Coast to Country where the convoy travels out to small country towns to try and leave them just a little better then when we arrived. We consist of 65 teams, 22 official vehicles including our own medics, tow trucks and our beloved mechanics, who keep the wheels turning and motors running on our ‘Dunga’s.

The adventure consists of travelling to unknown destinations, you read correctly! The teams have no idea where they are going each day. They are handed route notes in the morning and then again at lunch time. They follow their notes which indicate an odometer reading (which they use an app to map their kms) and then are only given the street name or road to turn onto. This is where our official pace car ‘The Road Hog’ stays at the front to keep the convoy moving and our Sweep makes sure no ‘dunga’ is left behind.

We try and find roads off the normal bitumen track and take the convoy through dirt roads, private properties and national parks. The scenery through the countryside is breathtaking. The Dungarians love pushing their cars through some challenging terrain and their favourite is the water crossings.

Upon arriving to their country camp, they unload and set up swags for a night under the stars. Depending on where we are staying, we either have dinner at our camp site around fires or descend on a little country pub. We then wake up before the sun to pack up camp and be on the road again in the morning, to do it all over again.

The Dunga Derby car rally is all things comradery, camping and country, while making a difference to the lives of the recipients of Rally for a Cause who are experiencing life limiting medical conditions in need of financial and/or practical assistance.

Our teams are still fundraising, if you would like to support head to www. frasercoastdungaderby.com.au If you would like to register your expression

FATHERHOOD

Being a dad is one of the most fulfilling parts of my life, and at the same time, it is also one of the most challenging. This month, I felt called to touch on fatherhood as it is a major aspect of my life. I am a dad to four! My boys are 11 and 1 years old, and my girls are 7 and 4. As I’ve written previously, we homeschool and live in our van, so we are with our kids a lot! Would I change it? No!

Up until my eldest was 6, I worked in the Australian Federal Police, a role that kept me away from home a lot. Commuting long hours, plus 12-hour shifts, meant most days were at least 16 hours long. I’d come home, eat, sleep, and do it all over again. For the first 6 years of my eldest son’s and the first 3 years of my eldest daughter’s life, I was pretty much absent. I would go 4-5 days at a time without seeing them, and when I was home, I was angry, distant, and honestly didn’t really know how to be a dad. My own father left before I was born, and without positive male role models, I was flying blind. Never mind I was still just a boy myself.

As I reflect on my early years as a dad, I can’t help but feel sad and regretful because I wasn’t a nice person. I can only imagine how I must have come across to my kids during those times. I was parenting from my own conditioning, and I need

facebook.com/thehealingb @ the_healing_breath

to forgive myself and embrace that part of me. The beautiful thing now is I have the awareness and consciousness to be a more present and engaged parent. I come from a place of love and understanding rather than annoyance and reaction.

Our kids just want us. They are so innocent and pure, and sometimes we can forget that. We get too caught up in our own past, our own stressors of life, and we end up taking it out on them. Over time, we create adults who then need to work on their past. We don’t want that.

One story I want to leave you with shows the power our actions have on our kids. I was sitting in ceremony a few months back, feeling very tense and tight. I closed my eyes and asked myself, why am I so tight, why am I so tense? Straight away, I was taken back to my childhood and my mum yelling at me. I felt my body tense and tighten with fear, and in that moment, I broke down in tears as I realised the effect my shouting has potentially had on my kids… how I’ve stressed and tensed their bodies through my inability to regulate and navigate my own emotions.

When we are in the trenches with our kids, take a short, millisecond moment to take a breath, and then respond from the heart rather than reacting on auto-rage-pilot, you and your kids will notice the difference.

ICAMPING

n all honesty, camping and I are on a mutually exclusive basis. As a colleague of mine in Hong Kong once put it; ‘Why you pay so much money for house and then sleep outside like a beggar?’ I must admit he did make a good point.

When it comes to living on the Fraser coast though, the promise of perfect camping conditions grabs the attention of even the most seasoned city slicker like me, which is why I recently set out on what I thought would be a delightful escapade to a well know island camping area. Little did I know that the camping gods had something quite different in store for me.

It all started with the tent. As a self-proclaimed expert in all things DIY (thanks, YouTube), I confidently took charge of pitching my temporary abode for the night.

Little did I know that a tent standing proudly on its four legs was merely a suggestion of what could be attained given the right circumstances – in my reality, it became a lopsided, half-collapsed structure. Cue the laughter and the first of many groans from the more seasoned locals watching nearby.

As night fell, so did the temperature, and my feeble attempts to start a campfire proved futile. It turns out that rubbing two sticks together only works on TV, not in real life. So, armed with a box of matches and my own naiveness , I fumbled my way through a series of comical mishaps – from setting fire to the

wrong end of the matchbox to accidentally soaking kindling with water instead of fire-starting fluid.

With my stomach growling and my spirit dampened (literally and metaphorically), I turned to my meagre food supplies for sustenance. This is where my genius culinary skills came into play. Who knew that burnt marshmallows could double as a charcoal-flavoured delicacy?

While my onlookers may have begged to differ, I like to think I elevated my camp cooking experience to gourmet levels. Despite the chaotic series of events that unfolded that fateful night, a strange sense of camaraderie emerged among us (possibly inspired by the cold drinks I passed out of my esky).

As we huddled together under the stars around that great Aussie leveller, the campfire (lit by one of the locals), we told stories and our laughter mingled with the sounds of the wilderness. I realised at that point that the true joy of camping lies not in an immaculate tent or perfect campfire meals, but in the shared moments of comradery and adventure, not to mention being able to experience the sheer beauty of the incredible camping locales that the Fraser Coast offers.

So here’s to disastrous camping trips, burnt marshmallows, and lopsided tents – may they always remind us that sometimes, the best memories are made when things don’t go according to plan. And who knows, maybe next time, I’ll remember to pack the bug spray. Or not. After all, where’s the fun in a perfect camping trip?

ALBUM OF THE MONTH

Kate was discovered by Pink Floyd band member David Gilmour when she was 16. Shortly afterwards she released her eponymous debut album; ‘The Kick Inside’, which contained the haunting, ground-breaking single ‘Wuthering Heights’ - whose vocals and melody changed the landscape of music forever. The album contains several hit singles and was certified platinum after almost a year in the top ten of British album charts.

Well known for her incredible vocal talent and lyricism, Kate’s music recently saw a resurgence in popularity when the track ‘Running up that Hill’ was used in Season 3 of the ‘Stranger Things’ television series in 2023.

Best listened to on a cold, stormy winter’s night with a glass of wine or two.

CAMPEDIA CAMPOUT BRINGS OVER 170 ADVENTURERS TO THE FRASER COAST

The recent Campedia Campout at Trinity Islands Holiday Park, Burrum Heads, was a resounding success, drawing over 170 enthusiasts from as far as South Australia and Victoria. This exciting event, proudly listed on the Campedia platform, contributed to over 190 nights of accommodation, marking a significant boost for the local economy.

A Community United by Adventure Campedia, more than just an online travel agency, has established itself as a thriving community for those passionate about exploring Australia. The platform not only facilitates travel bookings but also fosters connections among like-minded adventurers. Content creators can share their YouTube and TikTok videos, while local businesses can list their services with various membership options, ranging from free directory listings to premium memberships with booking calendars and payment gateways.

Workshops and Learning Sessions

The campout featured a range of engaging workshops designed to educate and entertain attendees. One of the highlights was a session led by Greg, Miriam, and Chris from Aussie Destinations Unknown. A Facebook comment from a community

member, Off The Beaten Track Oz, perfectly encapsulates the experience:

“It was an absolutely epic session we had with Greg, alongside the ever-so-wise Miriam and Chris from Aussie Destinations Unknown. I mean, seriously, we learned sooo much that my brain felt like a blender!! Huge shoutout to Campedia for putting this on. We can’t describe how much fun we had over the weekend. It was like a wild party mixed with a TED Talk on steroids. We laughed, we learned, and we left with our brains buzzing like caffeinated bees. We’re already counting down the days until the next session. Greg, one question: can we maybe make it a beachside extravaganza? So thanks again, Campedia, for making our brains happy and the weekend unforgettable. We can’t wait to see what you have in store for the next one!!”

Fun and Games for All Ages

In addition to the educational sessions, the campout was packed with fun activities for both kids and adults. These games not only provided entertainment but also helped forge new lifelong friendships among the participants. The event also offered the unique opportunity for attendees to meet their favourite YouTubers in person, adding an extra layer of excitement to the weekend.

The Vision Behind Campedia

Greg Hollier, the founder of Campedia, attributes the platform’s success to the genuine spirit of its community and technology. “It’s about bringing together a group of like-minded people who are genuinely interested in helping each other,” he explains. “Whether it’s recommending the best locations or sharing tips on equipment, the Campedia platform thrives on the contributions of its members.”

Boosting Local Tourism

The impact of the Campedia Campout extends beyond the immediate participants. By attracting over 170 visitors to the Fraser Coast region and generating over 190 nights of accommodation, the event provided a substantial boost to local businesses. This aligns with Campedia’s mission to support and promote local enterprises through its platform, offering them visibility and tools to grow.

Looking Forward

The success of the Campedia Campout has set the stage for future events. Participants are already eagerly anticipating the next gathering, with hopes for new locations and even more engaging activities. As Campedia continues to expand its community and refine its offerings, the potential for more unforgettable experiences grows.

In conclusion, the Campedia Campout at Burrum Heads was more than just a weekend getaway; it was a celebration of community, learning, and adventure. With the combined efforts of its members and the vision of its founder, Campedia is not only transforming the way Australians travel but also enriching the lives of those who share a passion for exploration. The future looks bright for this dynamic platform, with many more adventures on the horizon.

CAMPING OR GLAMPING

With upgrades available on almost anything, from ‘would you like fries with that’ to ‘upgrade to business using your frequent flyer points’, it is not surprising that you can now upgrade your camping experience.

Whilst the call of the wild is a welcome change for some, the risk of inclement weather, limited amenities and blow up mattresses is not for everyone.

Hence, there is an upward trend to glamping, or boutique camping, because it combines the traditional outdoor experience with luxury accomodations where someone else does all the hard work.

This idea came to fruition in Africa, when the wealthy wanted all the comforts of home whilst on safari. So these expeditions were equipped with upscale tents, including airconditioning , large bath tubs, nice linens, wifi and even your own Nespresso machine!

Closer to home, and with similar offerings, are a number of websites where your hosts provide any number of premier sumptuous experiences. It is worth checking them out.

To further add to the enjoyment of your trip, spend some time shopping for the perfect outfits to take with you. This month we are featuring our take on elegant, relaxed winter separates to keep you cosy and comfortable on your travels, and when you get home as well.

CAULIFLOWER AND CURRIED LENTIL SOUP

WHY AM I HERE?

One of the most frequent questions I asked myself in my younger years was, “Why am I here?” This question echoed my need to know if my life had a purpose and meaning.

Was my life a series of random events or was it planned and overseen somehow by a Power greater than I could understand? Significantly, if my life was part of an unfolding greater plan, how could I know that I was on the right ‘path’? How could I know that my choices were leading me in the direction I was supposed to go?

It has taken me until the middle of my sixth decade to find the answers that feel right. It was hard to break the conditioning of a traditional church upbringing in which I was told God would punish me for sins I didn’t even understand. I no longer believe that I or anyone else is born into sin, and I don’t believe that suffering is the result of God’s anger or disappointment. Far from it.

What I do believe is that God (or the Divine Light, Source, Universe and all the other names we call the creative force that flows through all things) is the essence of Love. Not human love, but unconditional Love without judgement, hatred or any intention to inflict suffering. As souls we are gifted a human life, and the purpose of that life is to live it. To live it with an awareness that we are souls in a human body, on

Earth to get the practical experiences our soul needs to grow.

It is okay to feel unsure of our direction, because we are given opportunities to make our own choices, learn from our mistakes and hopefully grow in wisdom. Our free-will allows us to create experiences and then see the consequences of our decisions. That’s how we get the practical lessons our souls need to grow.

It’s perfectly natural to reflect on some decisions later in life and think, “What was I thinking???” I know that I have done that. If life had come with a GPS or a guidebook, I might have made fewer decisions I regretted, yet how could I have grown in empathy and love if I was spared the challenges that awakened them within me?

I now believe we are guided by an inner compass, which is the whispering of our soul. I no longer get hung up on my life’s purpose because if I am bringing the best of who I am into every day, no more can be asked.

I feel gratitude for all experiences, even the tough ones, that have guided me to who I am, where I am and my love for life. That’s what feels right, and why I’m still here.

May your life’s path be a blessing in whatever belief system you hold. Many paths lead to the same destination.

JULY INSPIRATION

What a magic time of the year for a camping trip! This month’s theme brings back memories of my children camping in the backyard. Travelling away is great, but I must say my backyard camping memories bring a smile to my face. A little campfire - roasting marshmallows, listening to music, rugging up, and sleeping under the stars with the kids. Talk about a beautiful bonding family experience.

Capricorn

Dec 22 -Jan 19

Connections are highlighted this month, Capricorn. Whether this be spending time with family, or reconnecting with friends. Also note, someone in your circle may need a little extra support. I also would suggest reconnecting with nature, whether it be bush walking, mountain climbing, or a beach visit. Soak up nature’s beauty, because your body will enjoy it!

Aquarius

Jan 20 - Feb 18

Communication is highlighted for you this month, Aquarius. There is an emphasis on making sure you communicate and express yourself clearly, as you do not want to be open to misinterpretation. On another note, make time to find some peace, in your busy schedule, as you work way too hard!

Pisces

Feb 19 - Mar 20

Life is looking bountiful for you, this month. I have a feeling you will have the Midas touch! In other words, everything you touch will turn to gold! Enjoy this time, making sure to eat well and play well. Speaking of food, build your immune reserves by eating fresh fruit and veggies, and boost your intake of vitamin C. Happy days!

Aries Mar 21 - April 19

The Eucalyptus card suggests making healthy body choices. Winter is well and truly here, and so are those winter viruses. Winter nights are perfect to snuggle up with a blanket and get plenty of rest. It is important to recharge at this time. Enjoy the sunshine, and remember eucalyptus is great for those stuffy noses.

Taurus April 20 - May 20

What jobs have you been putting off Taurus. This month is ideal to sort out all those unfinished jobs, so you can move on. I believe you are on the edge of moving forward, and it is exciting. If you have a goal, keep your eye on the prize and take it one stepping stone at a time. You’ve got this!

Gemini May 21 - June 20

Watch out for conflict, this month Gemini. I want to say, be careful of getting involved in other’s dramas, just walk away from it. More importantly, reserve your energy and fill up your own cup! Nourish yourself and do more of what gives you peace and joy.

Cancer June 21- July 22

You are such a beautiful soul, Cancer. Your sensitivity can leave you open to vulnerability. Be on the lookout for people that aren’t as genuine as you. I want to say, your strength will also bring you positive opportunities this month, but be wary- if it doesn’t feel right, forget it!

Leo

July 23 - Aug 22

July is a good month to stand up for what you believe in Leo. You are not silly, and your thoughts are important, you better believe that! I feel you are solitary, and perhaps like to stay in the background, and keep the peace. No more standing back, you are worthy and have value!

Virgo Aug 23 - Sept 22

I get a really positive feeling for you, this month, Virgo. Acknowledge, and be proud of where you are right now. I’m feeling you underestimate your talents and abilities. I want to say stand tall, and believe in you. Be open to the ideas you are having. You may be surprised, but you have a lot of support around you, and your ideas.

Libra Sept - 23 - Oct 23

Come on Libra! There is an emphasis on you taking control of a situation you have been unable to take action on in the past. I know finding the confidence can be hard however time to face the fears and just go for it! I think you will be pleasantly surprised. Good luck!

Scorpio Oct 24 - Nov 21

If you were to measure your body battery, what percentage charge would you be? Like our mobile phones, we have to plug in and charge our bodies, by getting adequate rest and sleep to be able to cope with the stresses of daily life. Please be aware of burning the candle at both ends. Rest up!

Sagittarius Nov 22 - Dec 21

Ok Sagittarius, time to release and surrender behaviours, patterns, limiting thoughts, stress and anything else that no longer serves you. When you surrender your worries to the universe, you literally feel free. So this month, like the song says, do what you want to do, and be what you want to be. Yeah!
