The Great Notts Show Returns for its 5th Birthday! The Great Notts Show returns to Nottingham’s Old Market Square for another year and this year it’s the shows 5th Birthday! The event celebrates all things ‘Great’ about Nottinghamshire, including food, drink, live music, crafts, arts and more! Last year over 120,000 people descended on The Old Market Square and the surrounding areas to enjoy what the show, which is now sponsored by Central College, MANGO, Robin Hood Energy, Leaders and Deliverpp, had to offer. Chris Stephenson, Marketing and Communications Manager at Central College has said: “Central College Nottingham is again proud to be a sponsor of the Great Notts Show. Last year we showcased our courses to thousands of people and this time around there will be some new activities for people to get involved in. It’s a brilliant event to be involved in promoting all this is good about Nottingham and we are looking forward to help celebrate the Show’s fifth birthday!” Mr. MANGO also commented saying: “‘Over the last 5 years the Great Notts Show has grown into a fantastic event that celebrates the best that Nottinghamshire has to offer. MANGO has been the county’s favourite travel card for nearly 8 years so we’re pleased to be partnering with a local show and supporting the community. The Old Market Square is at the heart of the city so getting to the event on the bus or tram with your MANGO will be cheap and easy. I have lots of treats lined up for MANGO customers at the event, and one lucky person will be winning a year’s free bus & tram travel! I can’t wait to see you all there.” With up to 100 stalls selling a variety of foods such as hog roasts, burgers, nachos, jewellery and lots more will be spread over Market Square, there will be some much going off for everyone to enjoy. There will be seated bar areas, real ale bars and an array of other alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages on offer, for the adults to try out. With live music, as you drink in the sunshine, from some of Nottinghamshire’s best and upcoming talent provided by I’m Not From London, is there anything better? So make sure you are in Nottingham around the Old Market Square from the 22nd to the 25th September to help Nottingham celebrate everything that is ‘great’ about the county! www.greatnottsshow.co.uk

THE ULTIMATE CREATION In The Club creator Kay Mellor talks about the joys of motherhood, famous fans and why she has absolutely no regrets.

When Kay Mellor became pregnant she was terrified and thought her life was over. It was 1967 and at 15 she felt wildly underprepared for parenthood, as did her boyfriend Anthony who was 17 and an apprentice motor mechanic. So the couple decided to keep it a secret until at five months her growing bump became impossible to hide. Now, almost fifty years later, Mellor,65, is one of the greatest writers in British television and credits motherhood with shaping her incredible career, she is also still happily married to Anthony and the pair have two daughters, TV producer Yvonne Francas and actress Gaynor Faye. “At the time it seemed like an absolute disaster; five months pregnant and getting married at 16. But in the end it was one of the best things that could have ever happened.” she explains. “Because I was a young mum I was able to study when the girls were at school, and that eventually led me to where I am today.” After studying drama at university she went on to form her own theatre company, but it soon became clear that Mellor’s real talent lay in writing and over the last three decades she has become famous for her specific brand of drama; honest, heartfelt and intrinsically Northern. From her first major series Band of Gold to her most recent BBC drama, In The Club , Mellor rarely strays from her beloved Yorkshire, saying: “Leeds is my home and when it comes to my characters I simply write them where I see them. But I think that intrinsic ‘Yorkshireness’ that people talk about is in the warmth and humour.” To further her point, Mellor recalls the time Steven Spielberg called her up to say how much he enjoyed her hit lottery drama The Syndicate : “He said he thought it had ‘a real sense of community and place,’ and thinking about it, that must be because I draw inspiration from the people and world around me.” Given her reputation for writing from experience, it seems surprising it has taken Mellor so long to pen In The Club , which encompasses every aspect of parenthood, both good and bad. The BBC drama, now in its second series, follows six women who bond in their antenatal class and go on to remain close after the birth of their children. It is a fearless and refreshing look at the many joys and pitfalls of life as a new parent and Mellor says that it was a perfect opportunity to ‘exorcise her demons.’ “I had the idea quite a while ago but wrote Fat Friends instead, and I thought to myself ‘it’s a shame I never wrote that.’ Because there’s a lot to said about birth and life itself. It’s the ultimate creation isn’t it? Life. you can’t create anything more than that AND it is life changing. Life will never be the same for again after you’ve had a child.” In The Club is now on DVD alongside In The Club Series One and Two Box Set.

Great Food and Drink Festivals! The Great Food and Drink Festivals had a fantastic 2016 with big named chefs attending their shows and thousands upon thousands of people coming along to enjoy the atmosphere, the wonderful food and the drink that was on offer. In 2016, chefs such as Tom Kerridge, Nayida Hussain, Simon Rimmer, Rustie Lee, John Torode and Dean Edwards, to name a few, attended the shows and cooking some delightful dishes that people could then replicate in their own home. Nottingham Castle was the first major Great Food and Drink Festival of the year and for the second year running, it certainly didn’t disappoint. Tom Kerridge, Nadiya Hussain and Rustie Lee all attended the Nottingham Castle event in 2016 and they were all a massive hit with the public. The Newstead Abbey Great Food and Drink Festival proved to be just as popular, if not more so, than its debut year! With Simon Rimmer, Michael Caines and Nancy Birtwhistle all taking to the Chef Demonstration Kitchen, people flocked in their thousands to see them cook up a treat! The final event of the year was the brand new event at Calke Abbey! This two day event was a welcome addition to the Great Food and Drink Festival calendar, with John Torode, Gregg Wallace and Dean Edwards showing off their culinary skills.

What’s coming up in 2017? Well, we’ll be back at Nottingham Castle and Newstead Abbey for a third consecutive year and also be heading back to Derbyshire for a second successive year at Calke Abbey. There may well be some great new venues on the horizon too! So make sure you are keeping up to date on the venues and the celebrity chefs by visiting our Facebook page www.facebook.com/ greatfooddrinkfestivals and our Twitter @GreatFoodDrink.
