Malvern seems to have more than its fair share of creative people. We have lots of writers, craftsmen, artists and musicians living in and around the town. The highs and lows of an artist’s life are spelled out on Page 42, where Lee Morris and his friend Tom tell us how creating distinctive images of Elgar almost landed them in court. Their story, thankfully, had a happy ending. Don’t forget, we are also spoiled for choice locally with independent shops, so do take the time to read about some of the Christmas gift ideas from local retailers. And if you’re looking to start something new in 2015, towards the back of the magazine you can find many ideas. Lastly I’d like to express my thanks to all our deliverers who tirelesly work in all kinds of weather to get the magazine out to you. They are a star team! The All About Team would like to wish you a very happy Christmas and a great start to 2015.

Advice

Investing… Where to turn with all this volatility? By Independent Financial Advisor Rob Weale from Colwall These past few weeks have been a particularly testing time. Global growth is slowing, oil prices dropping, inflation falling, political unrest in Ukraine, Syria, the Middle East and until very recently closer to home in Scotland, and to top it off, an investigation at Tesco! So with all this uncertainty, never has it been more important to ensure the correct strategy is applied to your investments. Whether it is your rainy-day ISA, income-producing investment holding, or your critical retirement plan, diversification and risk management are crucial. Asset Choice The single best way to protect your portfolio is to spread your risk across several different types of investments. There are many different assets in which you can invest, each with different risk characteristics. While the risks attributable to assets cannot be avoided, when managed collectively as part of a diversified portfolio, they can be diluted. Company specific risk Next, one of the best things you can do is to diversify within the assets. For example, you can spread your investments into different shares or bonds to ensure your portfolio is exposed to lots of different types of investments rather than, for example, having shares in just a few large companies. In this way share-specific risk can be reduced should one of those companies experience difficulties. Sector exposure It is just as important to spread your investments across different sectors. A sector is a grouping of funds with a similar investment objective and make up. For many reasons, companies within different sectors perform in very different ways. By diversifying across sectors you can access shares with high growth expectations, without overexposing your portfolio as a whole to undue risk. Geographical Location It’s natural to feel more comfortable investing in your home market, but this is not necessarily the most sensible option. Because investments

6

in different geographical economies generally operate in different economic cycles, they have less than perfect correlation. Investment funds Keeping track of lots of individual assets can be a daunting task. A much simpler solution is to buy investment funds containing those assets and leave the diversification worries to professional management where one can easily spread investments across hundreds of different assets. Risk profiling Some financial advisers are still guilty in a somewhat broad-brushed manner, of categorising their clients using three basic levels: ‘cautious’, ‘balanced’ or ‘aggressive’. However there are now many sophisticated risk profile questionnaires and online tools available to help financial advisers measure your appetite for risk more precisely, and even your tolerance for loss. The more accurate your risk profile, the greater the chance of recommending the most suitable investments for your needs. Summary At Smith Weale Associates we are a great believer in diversification at every stage of the investment process, risk rating clients, risk rating assets and risk rating funds, to the extent that where appropriate we will recommend a fund of funds as another layer of diversification. If you have not explored true diversification before, might I suggest you do it now and ensure you are prepared for whatever the future holds.

before making an investment decision – Smith Weale Associates can help you with this. We welcome your enquiry.

Coach House

Theatre

The Coach House is a gem of a theatre, standing in the heart of Great Malvern. After three decades of work to create a versatile performance space, a new extension to the building was recently completed, creating a vibrant centre for local performers. The building is popular with actors as an intimate setting. Imogen Stubbs became a patron after visiting and suggested some of the improvements that have since been made. It’s an amazing turnaround for a building that was facing demolition just 30 years ago. A successful campaign saved the Coach House which was used as a store before further work turned it into a studio theatre. ‘We’re hugely satisfied with what’s been achieved’ says Chris Bassett, Company Manager for the Players. ‘It’s thanks to the efforts of so many individuals but also support from the local authority, The Arts Council and The Elmley Foundation. Its amazing what can be achieved by a sustained team effort.’

THE HISTORY OF THE COACH HOUSE THEATRE This Grade 2 Listed Victorian building was originally the stables and coach house for a large property nearby. It was used as a store and garage by The District Council and as a scenery store for the theatre next door. Around 1984 it was declared unsafe and scheduled for demolition. A campaign saved the building and the structure was re-roofed and reinforced. An extension in 1997 gave new workshop, office and prop space – a foyer, dressing rooms and other improvements allowed it to open as a studio theatre, with a production of Billy Liar in May 2006. The latest extension creates even better facilities which will host meetings, music, drama and much more.

8

More building work has just been completed which gives the theatre new dressing room and backstage facilities that were badly needed. The Theatre is now the base of The Malvern Theatre Players and will play an active role as a local venue that promotes up and coming talent. ‘We have helped small professional companies to grow’ says Chris. ‘Vamos Theatre, one of the UK’s leading full mask theatre companies started out here and we built their last set for them. Because this is a small, versatile theatre space run with volunteer help, it’s affordable for up and coming musicians. We’ve just hosted a concert by the musician Matt Woosey, who chose us for a gig to launch his new CD. We did the same for Babajack who have just performed a concert at the Royal Albert Hall which was broadcast on BBC Radio 2. Offering a step up for new talent is very rewarding.’ Chris estimates it’s taken at least £200,000 in the last three decades to get the theatre where it is today. ‘Of course that’s in addition to all the countless hours of work from volunteers who have done everything from hard physical work improving the building to fundraising. The hard work continues, we see it as a new adventure!’ For further details of The Coach House Theatre, see www.coachhousetheatre.co.uk

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul Papandreou feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people

money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Malvern, Worcester & Hereford areas and Paul is finding that his approach is a major

factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people

I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

welcome to the carpet forest A magical forest is springing up in Malvern over Christmas. Strangely shaped branches cast dappled light onto the forest floor while the song of birds can be heard high in the canopy.

Welcome to The Carpet Forest, an art installation coming to Malvern Cube, the community space on Albert Road North. The Forest was originally created as a one-off for The Kidderminster Arts Festival, but was so popular it has been taken on tour. It might just be the perfect place to escape to before and after Christmas! ‘This was very much locally generated’ says Loz Samuels, once of the driving forces behind the project. ‘It has been inspired by Kidderminster’s connections to carpet making. The soundtrack, created by musician Andy Edwards, takes visitors on a journey through the day. From the birds tweeting in the morning through to the sound of carpet looms as the day’s work gets underway, you see visitors getting sucked into the experience.’ The floor of the art installation is carpeted – literally – with sections of patterned carpet from Brintons which is based in Kidderminster, and it encourages people to sit down and reflect. ‘Some people bring a picnic with them’ says Loz, ‘and in Bristol a group of young skateboarders spread out and began reminiscing about their granny’s carpets! We’ve found that wherever we take it, people respond to the forest in different ways.’

18

‘The trees are over fifteen feet high and it can really feel like being in a wood’ she continues. ‘The lighting and trees cast shadows which create a special atmosphere that stimulates the senses.’ Many visitors are children who seem to be especially inspired by stepping into an imaginary forest. And its not just the children who like it. ‘We’ve seen dads turn into bears and chase their kids around!’ laughs Loz. During its time in Malvern, there should be festive performances taking place and a winter theme coming into the forest. Entry is free and you are welcome to come in and play or relax and perhaps enjoy a mince pie under the trees.

The Carpet Forest is at Malvern Cube, Albert Road North in Malvern. It will be open from 20th to 23rd of December between 11am and 4pm. It closes from Christmas Eve to Boxing Day and re-opens from 27th to the 30th of December between Noon and 4pm. Entry is free of charge and the forest is suitable for all ages.

Parrys of Malvern Original jewellery from a local designer makes its debut at Parrys in Malvern in time for this Christmas. Jim White creates individually designed earrings, pendants, brooches and other wonderful items at his studio in Upper Colwall. ‘It’s the first time we’ve stocked something made so locally’ says David Siviter. ‘Jim has created some beautiful pieces which include celtic knots and apple pendants as well as stylish earrings with a hint of Art Noveau and Art Deco in their design.’

offers an opportunity to give a really special Christmas gift. ‘As with all our jewellery, we’re very particular about the quality of the precious stones’ says David, ‘whether that be diamonds or rubies and emeralds - in all cases we choose stones with brilliance and vibrant colour.’

Trollbeads continue to be very popular with customers. These unique beads, crafted in silver, gold and glass are highly collectible. ‘We have many customers who collect them and want the new designs which are regularly launched’ says David. The shop keeps its stock of Trollbeads fully updated and give customers the opportunity to stay informed of what’s new with special Trollbeads events.

The shop, which David and his family have run for 40 years, sees returning customers from the second or third generation of the same family, who appreciate the chance to browse jewellery and seek advice before buying. ‘We have long experience in all aspects of the jewellery business’ says David, ‘and as we approach Christmas we look forward to welcoming both new and returning customers.’

There is plenty to choose from in Parrys’ collection of watches from several high quality brands while their range of diamond jewellery

Aches and Pains Treatment Clinic at Prospect View Medical Centre Ask the Osteopath Your questions answered: After 24 years in practice and over 50,000 treatments I have seen many interesting cases.

David V Jones BSc(Hons) DO Registered Osteopath

Topic of the month:

Neck pain and sleeping position Sleeping is a surprisingly hazardous business. Over the years I have seen hundreds of people who went to bed feeling fine and woke up in severe pain.

The ideal

There are over 20 joints in the neck which work together to produce an excellent range of movement in flexion, extension, rotation and side bending. Although the neck can move through a large range of movement it is not happy to stay at the outer ranges of any given movement for very long. At night we stay still for relatively long periods and so it is important to try to keep the head in a neutral position at 90 degrees to the shoulders.

The problem

Anatomically the joints of the neck are adjacent to the nerves that supply the arms, chest and upper back. If these nerves become compressed or irritated pain follows. Poor sleeping position is a major contributor to these problems.

This clinic is privately run at Prospect View by David Jones DO. All treatments are drug-free and use techniques recommended by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence.

Prospect View Medical Centre 300 Pickersleigh Rd Malvern WR14 2GP www.writingourwayhome.com www.themalvernosteopath.co.uk

The answers

Firstly try to avoid sleeping on your front. I believe that those who habitually do this are at greater risk of neck problems as the head is continuously held in full rotation night after night. It’s a hard habit to break. Some people try to hug pillows as they go to sleep or block themselves in with pillows or put a pillow between the knees. Others tie ribbons between wrist and bedpost to stop them turning over and I’ve even heard of people velcroing a tennis ball to the front of their pyjamas! Side lying is best. Next best is on your back. On your front is the worst. Secondly, a quality shaped pillow is a good idea. There are many different types available. Personally I am impressed with the “Complete Sleeprrr Pillow”. It is more adjustable than most and the memory foam used is softer than average. I have used one myself for several years. I currently have these pillows in stock at £50. Please ring if you want one. They make an excellent Christmas present!

Initial consultation (with treatment) costs £45. Follow-up sessions £40. For appointments and enquiries ring on 01684 573989 or 07732 157772. No ache too trivial. No pain too severe.

North Malvern Arts There have been feature films, dramas and music galore at St Peter’s Church in North Malvern this autumn. It’s thanks to the hard work of North Malvern Arts, a Co-operative set up to promote live performances, film as well as arts and crafts, mostly using the church as a venue. ‘Some years ago we thought it was silly not to use the church for more than occasional services’ says Andrew Judd, the churchwarden and Chairman of the Co-operative. ‘We became involved with Shindig, an organisation that supports local venues and put on a couple of shows which were sucessful. We wanted more people but I’m not an impressario!’ says Andrew, ‘and so two years ago the Co-operative was formed.’ Today, North Malvern Arts runs a busy programme of events throughout the year. This autumn there have been several films, a performance of ‘The Tell Tale Heart’ and music. Regular craft courses are also held. The prime aim is to promote the arts locally, but if any profit is made it’s divided between the co-op and the church.

‘We continue to put on three shows with Shindig every year’ says Andrew, ‘and we are also founder members of Rural Reels which organises film screenings locally.’Another of the Co-op’s big successes are its folk nights, which regularly see audiences of around 80 people. ‘We’re currently planning to hold another one this month (December) says Andrew, ‘so please check our website for updates.’

New Year, new term: how can you help your child to achieve their best this year? Do you make new year resolutions and give up before the end of January? As parents we can’t give up on our children. We need to set a good example and help them to get into good habits: eating their 5-a-day, cleaning their teeth, doing homework! But we don’t want any of these to be a battle – so how do we achieve them all? Does it really work if we hide broccoli in a sauce or buy a TV character toothbrush? Our children learn most from us, so if they see you reading the paper or a recipe, checking your bills or making DIY calculations – they discover these skills are an essential part of life. So, just like the routines we put in place for the daily necessities, it helps your child to have a set time for learning at home. Many children are better at mental maths early in the morning, so reciting tables while waiting for the toaster to pop up is a good start to the day – can they do it faster the next day? Make up sums or questions from what’s around them. One of my Kumon students told me he was working out how many baked beans there might be in a can – so I challenged him to multiply it up to 12 cans! At the end of the day it’s time to settle down with a good book and escape into a new world of language, characters and imagination or fascinating facts. School reading schemes serve specific functions but reading for pleasure, above all other factors, has the most influence on a child’s academic attainment. The Kumon maths and English programmes are based on the premise of ‘a little bit every day’ to build skills, confidence and good study habits. Why not make it a habit for your family in 2015? Call me to find out more.

Elgar Art Imagine being an artist and waking up one morning to discover that everybody was talking about your work. Lee Morris knows how that feels. In March this year, together with a friend, Tom Brown, he created an image of Elgar leaning against a phone box that got the whole of Malvern talking – and almost got him arrested. ‘That one idea sparked off a chain of events’ he says.’It’s been a roller coaster ride.’

Lee and Tom still wince slightly when remembering how they were stopped by a police officer just as they finished stencilling the picture of Elgar on a wall under Rosebank Gardens. The image, however, became hugely popular, and photographs of it were shared online. Soon afterwards the original artwork was auctioned, raising thousands of pounds for local charities. ‘Looking back, its been a good year’ says Tom. ‘We couldn’t believe it when the images received a thousand likes on Facebook.’ As the story made national newspaper websites, Lee found that living in the limelight had its drawbacks. ‘My phone was ringing off the hook’ he says, ‘I was bombarded by calls from the media.’ Things did calm down and Tom and Lee were invited to take part in City of Colours, a national street-art festival that was held in Birmingham. Commissions for further works followed from The HMV Store in Worcester and The Elgar Birthplace Museum at Lower Broadheath. Something else Lee and Tom didn’t expect back in March was the continued interest in the work, with cards and prints of the Elgar images on sale for Christmas at iapetus on Belle Vue Terrace. ‘I would never have tried to create art using a stencil’ says Lee, ‘it was Tom’s idea and it worked. What followed was a hell of an adventure!’

Community Volunteers Most people can find themselves in difficult situations at some point in their lives. It might be difficulties with a housing situation. Some elderly people struggle financially and may not be aware that help is available. Some people may slip into financial difficulty and can’t find a way out.

In the Malvern area, people like this are helped on a daily basis by the volunteers and staff at The Citizens Advice Bureau in Malvern. Whatever the difficulty, the team in the Malvern Hills District Office don’t judge but simply step in to help. While they manage to help thousands of people every year, the Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) was worried it wasn’t able to reach everyone. ‘Some people living in rural areas may be isolated either through poor public transport or disability’ says Paula Kingston from the CAB ‘and as a result aren’t accessing the help we offer.’ As a result a new team has been formed to get into rural communities and help. They are Community Liaison Volunteers, who can attend local groups, are contactable by phone and are the first port of call for those with a concern. The team is dotted around the Malvern Hills District from Eldersfield and Longdon in the south to Lindridge and Knighton in the north. ‘In these days of cuts in services, especially those which affect the most vulnerable in society, I really feel the work of the CAB is more important than ever’ says Margaret Watkins, one of the new volunteers. ‘At some time, most of us can find ourselves in need of help – we can all be affected at some time by illness, disability, or a relationship breakdown. As Community Liaison Volunteers we can be readily contacted to provide access to appropriate information, advice and support.’ As well as providing an important service, the volunteering is fun according to Liz Mills who together with her husband looks after the Welland, Castlemorton and Birtsmorton area. ‘I had two spells in 1970s and 80s as a voluntary worker for CAB and found it really interesting, enjoyable and fulfilling. Sometimes the people we help just need someone to listen to them. At other times it is a complicated problem they need guidance with. Whatever it is I love helping.’

46

‘As an elderly widower I continue to feel useful and able to delay calling myself ‘retired’’ says John Lakeman, another of the Community Liaison Volunteers in the Teme Valley. John previously set up a Neighbourhood Watch project and was looking for a new way to help his local community. The scheme has been started together with Worcestershire DIAL, supported by lottery funding, and will initially run for two years. The volunteers available across the district are: Teme Valley parishes : Stuart Cumella (01886) 888797, John Lakeman (01299) 896846, Margaret Watkins (01299) 270073 Alfrick : Nigel Tudge (01886) 822284 Bransford, Leigh and Leigh Sinton: Lillian Somervaille (01886) 833526 Castlemorton, Birtsmorton and Welland: Liz and Neville Mills 07592 055998 Berrow, Eldersfield, Pendock, Longdon, Holdfast, Queenhill, and Bushley: Philippa Pipe 07512 797212

If you’d like to talk to somebody at the Citizen’s Advice Bureau in Malvern, please call (01684) 563611. The office is open between 10am and 4pm on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday and also runs sessions in the community.

Aladdin

Competition

Vacuum your magic carpets, dust off your old lamps and get yourself down to Malvern Theatres for that most magical of Christmas family pantomimes Aladdin, from Thursday 11th December 2014 to Sunday 4th January 2015. Will Aladdin, the poor son of a laundry owner, played by Hi-5’s Chris Edgerley, get to marry the Princess played by Rebecca Marks, or will his plans be foiled by the evil Abanazar played by the one and only Robert Powell (Jesus of Nazareth, The Detectives, Holby City)? On hand to help Aladdin is the Slave of the Ring played by Carrie Rawlings, and hindering rather than helping with his hilarious antics will be Channel 5’s Milkshake presenter Derek Moran as Wishee Washee. Owner of ‘Twankey’s Laundry’, the old scrubber herself Widow Twankey is played by one of the country’s leading pantomime dames Ian Good. They’ll be joined by Mark James as PC Pong, Spencer K Gibbins as The Emperor and Connor J Barrie as The Genie. The show, with a full supporting cast, features lavish sets and costumes and a spectacular CGI flying carpet sequence. The pantomime is once again produced by UK Productions Ltd. So book today for the magic carpet ride of your life! Aladdin runs from 11th December – 4th January. Matinee and evening performances. Special Days - All Tickets £10.02, Normal Days £12.88 - £25.20 from Malvern Theatres Box Office on 01684 892277 or Malvern-Theatres.co.uk

Well-Being

new

beginnings In December we move through the longest night, the days begin to lengthen, January appears, and we think about resolutions and new beginnings.

By Kaspa Thompson As I write this the new beginning that I am facing is the opening of our new Buddhist temple in the centre of Malvern. The house buying process is in the final stages but not complete. I hope that by the time you are reading this we will be settled in, but at the moment all of that is in front of me. New projects are exciting. There can be a rush of energy as the pieces fall into place and we imagine our future successes. At the same time new projects, like New Year’s resolutions, can take us to the edge of our comfort zones. In the space between excitement and fear, and the known and the unknown, we meet hidden parts of ourselves: deeply held beliefs that may have been an unseen influence on our lives for many years. Occasionally I catch myself imagining what life will be like in the new temple. Sometimes I imagine that things will go smoothly and I’ll enjoy my life there, and sometimes I imagine that I will have to work hard to stop people being disappointed in me. I find myself imagining that someone doesn’t like the new cupboard I’ve chosen, or the way I’ve decorated the hall, or the talk I have just given. I imagine how to protect my reputation from their disappointment, even though it hasn’t happened yet. It’s inevitable that someone will be disappointed in me at some point. But the frequency that my thoughts turn to that particular scenario suggests that this is something more than the wandering of an idle mind. Somewhere in the depths of my unconscious is a belief that I’ll only be okay if no one is ever disappointed in me. When I bring this belief out into the light it’s plainly false. People have been

62

disappointed in me in the past and I’ve survived. This belief has the potential to get me into trouble. If I’m worrying about what people think then how can I choose the best cupboard that’s right for the space, or how to decorate the hallway, or give a half-decent talk? I’d be frozen into inaction and the worry about disappointing people would, ironically, make it much more likely that they really would be disappointed. Having caught a glimpse of this belief I can look out for it in my daily life. If I catch myself putting off work I can ask, “Is this for a good reason or has that old worry come back?” If it’s the worry, I can notice that it’s there and then get on with the work anyway. The work will get done, some people will like it and some won’t, and the belief will be shaken in the face of the evidence that it really is okay to disappoint people sometimes. Eventually it might disappear altogether. If we always live inside our comfort zones we don’t get to learn these things about ourselves. Beginning a new project and being taken to our learning edge is not always the most pleasant place to be. There can be fear and confusion alongside the excitement and celebration. If we can allow ourselves to see the unhelpful beliefs we have been keeping hidden, we can start to let them go and move forwards more lightly, relaxed and efficiently.

New Year, New You - Relax! The new year gives us an opportunity to invite something different into our lives, a clean slate after the festivities, a time to attend to what we really need, a new class, yoga, taichi or a creative right brain activity like an art class? Learning to relax is a very important key to unlock tensions and stress, to reverse the fight or flight mechanism, which turns on at speed to get us through the stressful times frequently throughout the day, but leaves us tight, below par and wrung out. Learning to relax can be so simple, but giving you a few minutes to practise and be still, herein lies the problem. Relaxing calms “the monkey mind so we can listen to our needs and discover what really nourishes us. Top tips You can sit on a chair or lie down and place your hands on your collar bones and observe the collar bones floating and spreading as you breathe, after a few minutes move your hands to your belly and observe the front body lightly lifting, spreading and sinking under your hand prints for a few minutes. What we no longer need to carry can leave the body and is replaced by clear, vital, bright energy to see us through our days, with an energized mind and body. For more tips see my website www.meridianyoga.net or join my new relax class! Alexandra Jones

Need to reduce that tummy? Did you know that mid-section fat is the most dangerous fat in the body? It produces 17 hormones, 15 of which are inflammatory! The largest contributors to body fat are the hidden sugars. Tips to help you reduce sugar: • Sugar is addictive. Cut it down gradually and you won’t even notice it! • Avoid processed foods with words ending in ‘ose’ such as sucrose, dextrose, maltose, glucose, especially if these ingredients are high up on the food label ingredients list. • Be aware that fat free can be more fattening than ‘normal’ foods! • Go for an oat-based cereal, add nuts and seeds full of nutrients and good fats. Also add ground flax seeds (gradually increase amount added to a heaped dessertspoon) – this will keep you feeling fuller longer thereby reducing the need to snack! • Reduce alcohol gradually. • Replace cakes and biscuits with a piece of fruit and a few unsalted mixed seeds and nuts. • Set yourself realistic goals to reduce sugar. • Eliminate foods to which you are intolerant.
