Welcome to the January issue of ‘All About Malvern’.

January 2011 Published and edited by: Sascha McDonald All About Local Magazines Ltd sascha@allabout-local.com 07906 573352 www.allabout-local.com Photo Front Page: The Beacon in the Snow Graphic Design & Layout: All About Magazines Editorial: Sascha - 07906 573352 Advertising: Tina Palmer - 07952 591031 Distribution: All About Malvern is distributed to 7,200 homes and businesses in Malvern Booking Deadline: For February - 13 January

Now that 2010 is finally over, many of us will be thinking about New Year’s Resolutions. The key to setting goals for ourselves is to make them realistic. If we make them too big they become intimidating, we quickly lose the will to complete them. Often, its about taking smaller steps, which over time lead us towards what it is we want. I’m pleased to say that MSJ Sports & Fitness Centre have kindly offered one reader the chance to take a ‘Health MOT’, which will help them along the path towards better fitness. Our resident nutritional expert Allison Maxwell will also be on hand to offer advice about healthier eating. Take a look at Page 12 for more information. If that doesn’t appeal then perhaps a personal makeover is in order, or even a spot of hula hooping – read on for a little inspiration! Happy New Year! Sascha, Publisher & Editor

Malvern’s Mystery Fourteen years ago Michael Shiner was out walking his dog near his home in Malvern, when he came across something of a mystery. Fiona, a Golden Retriever, had stopped under a tree and was indicating to Michael she’d found something. On walking over Michael spotted a cast-iron post with the date ‘1863’ and the name ‘Clerkenwell’ in raised lettering. Intrigued, Michael visited Malvern Library where name of the Clerkenwell district of London. In the a book on local history said the posts were seventeenth century a charity for the poor bought boundary markers. ‘My appetite was whetted’, the land as an investment, with the purchase he says. ‘I found another post with a similar vested in the Trustees of St James’ Church in inscription but of a different shape. Searching Clerkenwell. Their transaction must have paid off the brambles and ditches, in the next few years handsomely because by the nineteenth century I found ten marker posts, all with different land around Great Malvern was in demand as the dates and mostly town expanded rapidly. with different names’. It appears there was After carefully tracing some uncertainty about ‘To my intense joy it all over historic maps, the exact boundaries Michael plotted the married up. I came home of the charity’s land, so positions of the posts from time to time the beaming like a small boy!’’ and discovered they trustees came to visit corresponded with the Malvern. The markers boundary of the old still in the ground today Cockshute estate. ‘To bear different dates my intense joy it all married up. I came home and the names of different churchwardens, beaming like a small boy!’ he tells me as we pore presumably those who visited at different times over the many documents and maps that show to make sure their land wasn’t being taken by the extent of his research. others. The boundary that Michael plotted coincided As word spread about Michael’s research, with a Victorian map of the Clerkenwell estate other marker posts turned up in ditches and in held by the Malvern Hills Conservators. Markers housing was built on the old estate, road names including Clerkenwell Crescent remind us of the locality’s links with its past. The story could easily have faded into obscurity if Michael hadn’t devoted so much time to his research. The material and information he’s gathered has now been placed in the care of the Records Office at Worcestershire Council. Although approaching 90 years old, his interest in the boundary markers continues. ‘I never set out to be an author’ he says, ‘but it’s been very enjoyable’. A 24 page booklet telling the full story has sold out, a second edition has just been printed and is now available. ‘The growth of Malvern really took off when the railway arrived’ says Michael, ‘and the markers date from around this time. Its true to say these posts are a reminder of the land grabbing that must have gone on as Malvern expanded so quickly’. What is there to see today? Several of the posts stand close to roads or footpaths, others are on private land and Michael asks that people don’t trespass in order to see them. ‘The Civic Society does occasionally organise walks around the markers and this is a far better way to see them and learn more about their history’ he says.

'The Clerkenwell Markers' by Michael Shiner is available for £2.50 from Beacon Books and the Tourist Information Office in Malvern town centre. And Michael's book 'On Top Again', charting walks with his dog, is now on sale. To advertise call Tina 07952 591031 or sales@allabout-local.com

New Year, New You “May Your New Year be a Healthy One” By your local expert Allison Maxwell Exercise

“All Health Clubs see a huge spike in numbers attending the gym in the New Year. These numbers soon drop off at the end of March. This might be because of unrealistic or unachievable targets, boredom, aches and pains and even injury”, explains Mike Bourne, manager at MSJ Sports & Fitness Centre. The trouble is we all want a quick fix and the body of our dreams in just a few months! It’s no wonder the majority of exercisers are doomed for failure. Goals are the key to success, but your goals should be short, medium and long term. You should reassess these regularly as your journey may occasionally need changing. You should feel good about what you have achieved at the end of the week and not guilty about missing the gym or having a treat. Most importantly you shouldn’t feel disappointed that you are still 2 stone away from your ideal weight!

New Year Resolution

Every year your car goes for its MOT and it makes sense to carry out the equivalent maintenance for your body. As well as eating sensibly, the health benefits of physical activity are well documented. In Take a look at your current diet and how physically active you are. If you are less able bodied there are even ways of improving fitness while sitting in a chair.

Win a ‘Health MOT’ All About Magazines in collaboration with Allison Maxwell and MSJ Sports & Fitness Centre are offering one lucky reader a ‘Health MOT’. This MOT will include a nutritional consultation and fitness assessment. Six weeks after intervention the reader will be featured in All About Magazines. Have you got a nagging health, diet or selfimage problem? Please write to us by the 31st January 2011 and let us know how you think a health MOT would help you. One lucky reader will be selected to have a full tune-up from health and fitness experts to get them right on track. Send your entrance to: competition@allabout-local.com or post to All About Magazines Competition, 10 The Crescent, Colwall, Malvern WR13 6QN Please note: The winner must be prepared to to write a short piece on their experience from the 6 weeks, to be published in the magazines.

Ask yourself these questions: ★ How does your weight compare to a year ago? ★ Do you feel healthy and have lots of energy or are you tired all the time? ★ Do you eat at home most of the time? If so, what types of foods? Whole fresh food or boxed, processed food? ★ How physically active are you? Do you exercise regularly? ★ Do you eat healthy size portions or stuff yourself with every meal? ★ Do you smoke? ★ How much alcohol do you drink each week?

12

It is important to be honest and look at your health and dietary habits in order to set goals for 2011.

Aches and Pains Treatment Clinic at Prospect View Medical Centre Ask the Osteopath

David V Jones BSc(Hons) DO Registered Osteopath

Your questions answered: After 20 years in practice and over 50,000 treatments I have seen many interesting cases.

When is a knee not a knee?

Answer: “When it’s a hip.” Many years ago an elderly retired schoolteacher visited me with pain in her left knee. She had already had an X-ray of the offending joint and this had shown no abnormality, so she soldiered on. My own physical examination also revealed nothing out of the ordinary in the knee. However as I moved up to the left hip it became obvious that she had a severe restriction here and even the examination itself provoked her knee pain. I sent her back for another X-ray and sure enough it confirmed my suspicion of severe osteoarthritis of the left hip. Referred pain This lady was exhibiting a classic case of “referred pain”. The pain was coming from the hip but was felt purely in the knee. Although the mechanism isn’t fully understood, it is thought to be due to the complex nature of the “wiring” of the nervous system. The sensations from different areas of the body often share the same nerve fibres within the central nervous system as they travel to the brain. When the brain receives the pain signals

The new clinic is privately run at Prospect View by David Jones DO. All treatments are drug-free and use techniques recommended by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence. Prospect View Medical Centre 300 Pickersleigh Rd Malvern WR14 2GP www.themalvernosteopath.co.uk

from one of these areas it has to choose which area the pain is really coming from. Often the brain “guesses” wrongly and this leads to the referred pain phenomenon. Other examples Other examples of referred pain include left arm pain in heart attack, right shoulder pain in gallstones, and so-called “phantom limb pain” in which the patient still feels pain in an arm or leg that has previously been amputated. The outcome In the case of the elderly lady, she went on to have a full hip replacement and immediately her knee pain vanished. Interestingly, at this time there were long waiting lists for NHS hip replacements. Being of a practical disposition she decided to sell her car to fund the surgery privately. As she explained, her hip problem made it painful to drive, so the car was best sold, and after the operation she wouldn’t need a car because she would be able to walk everywhere! And sure enough the next time I saw her she was on foot.

Treatments cost £35 per session. For an appointment or informal chat ring on 01684 573989 or 07732 157772. No ache too trivial. No pain too severe.

All About... ...the Malvern Baby Gym Club Malvern Baby Gym Club offers activities and fun for pre-school children and meets weekly Alison Winters explains more.

Tell us what you do

We are lucky enough to have the use of amazing new facilities at the Downs School in Colwall. Every week we put out larger apparatus such as benches and tables for children to crawl, balance and jump from. We also have a large range of games equipment such as footballs, stilts, hoops, bats and balls. There is lots of equipment to use and the children get really creative, building pirate ships, trains and all sorts of amazing things. We organise simple running races and sometimes parachute games during the session. The whole point of Gym Club is to provide activities and equipment so parents can help their children enjoy those they are interested in. For Christmas we’ll probably organise a special trail or activity during a session or have a trip somewhere towards the end of term.

who runs the club?

The Club is run by three local mums, Alison, Marie and Tania. I am the secretary which involves keeping up with membership, letting members know of upcoming events and changes as well as organising events including trips during school holidays. The current group has been at the Downs for about two years but many members went to Baby Gym Club when it met at Malvern College, where it was run for many years by

Frances Thurlow. We’re enjoying being in a new location and sharing our activities with new parents. We have a maximum of 30 families as members at any one time. Some people come every week whilst others drop in occasionally but we usually have between 10 and 15 families at a session.

what do the children get out of it? Lots of fun! They love the freedom to run around in a big space and let off steam. There’s also the opportunity to develop new physical skills in a safe environment. They play with friends and perhaps best of all is the chance to be the boss for an hour while mum or dad takes their lead!

And what do the parents get out of it?

The enjoyment of seeing their child grow in confidence while developing physical skills. It’s a relaxed, informal environment where everyone joins in and has fun. There’s the chance to meet parents with children of a similar age while spending an hour of quality time with your child doing something you both enjoy. This is a really friendly, welcoming group with mums, dads, grandparents and childminders joining in. You don’t need any special skills to help your child with these activities, just be willing to take the lead from them and have fun .

Malvern Baby Gym meets every Wednesday at the Downs School during termtime from 10am till 11am. It costs £5.00 a term per family, or half price if you join after half term. Anyone is welcome to come along and try a session to see if it’s for them. You can call Alison on 01684 567777 to find out more.

New branch opens in the heart of Malvern Smith Weale Associates are proud to announce the opening of their new branch in the heart of Great Malvern. Founded in 2002, with offices in North Worcestershire, it has been the long term goal of Colwall resident Rob Weale to establish a local office to offer the very best service to the community, bringing traditional business values and cutting edge technology coupled with a wealth of knowledge and expertise.

Rob Weale pictured above, and left, Jeremy Smith

Smith Weale Associates is the brainchild of Jeremy Smith and Rob Weale, who between them have over 40 years experience in the financial services industry both having held high profile roles for some of the world’s largest financial institutions.

INdepeNdeNt AdvICe For those of you who are not familiar with Smith Weale Associates, they are an Independent Financial Advisory practice (IFA),offering financial planning solutions across the spectrum, indeed they would class themselves as general practitioners, that is to say that they advise on all aspects of financial planning from basic life assurance through to investment portfolio design and management, however there are also specialist areas which they cater for, for example Pre and Post Retirement Solutions, Equity Release and Long Term Care Funding to name a few. Of upmost importance is their ‘Independent’ status, meaning that they represent their clients when seeking the very best solution for them, rather than representing a company and their own products and services. Jeremy points out that ‘many people often make the mistake of thinking all financial advisers are the same, however this is not the case, many advisers represent a single company or organisation, a good example might be a high Street bank or a large multi tied firm such as St James’s Place, who in essence cannot source the right product from the whole of the market, only from their own limited product selection’. Smith Weale Associates also conduct regular reviews with all of their clients, tailored to suit their requirements, this may be quarterly, half yearly or annually, thus ensuring the continued suitability of any recommendation or product.

the pARtNeRS Rob Weale is West Malvern born and bred and now resides with his family in Colwall having moved back to the area in 2007 after a successful career

spent in Birmingham. Before setting up Smith Weale Associates his final role was as an Investment broker for the Zurich group, Rob says ‘having spent an entire career in financial services, and particularly in the final few years before setting up Smith Weale Associates, I was able to see the whole gamut of IFA practices, which really helped Jeremy and I design our own model which is why the business and the brand has gone from strength to strength over the last 8 years and continues to evolve’ Jeremy Smith is Birmingham born and bred and whilst still resident there with his family sees a real opportunity to offer sound financial planning solutions to the people of the area, Jeremy comments ‘I am very excited to be opening an office in such a picturesque location, and very much looking forward to establishing my business in the fabric of the community and affording the residents the very best bespoke service’

the SeRvICe At Smith Weale Associates we offer a comprehensive menu of services, and any initial meeting is free and without obligation, Rob points out ‘sometimes we are approached to just give some free helpful impartial advice and nothing more, which we are happy to do, in fact we welcome the enquiry. We feel it is important to help educate and assist members of the public wherever possible, after all, the more financially astute we all are, the greater the benefit to the wider community. It is our intention to write an editorial at least once a quarter on a topical subject, for example Long Term Care, Inheritance Tax planning or even a budget summary which readers will see in this magazine’. Both Jeremy and Rob are keen to demonstrate their services and welcome you to contact them.

Local Astronomy January is a great time to view the heavens, so we’ve enlisted the help of a local expert for advice and inspiration about what we should be looking for. Dr Chris Baddiley appreciates living in Mathon. It’s not just the village social life, or the countryside, but it is above all else about the darkness. ‘Although I spent many happy years in Malvern, I became increasingly frustrated with light pollution and losing sight of the starry skies’ he says. Since astronomy is one of Chris’ great passions, Mathon has no street lights anywhere near, with the hills helping to block out light pollution from the larger settlements of the Severn Valley. Walking through Chris’ house, I come across an impressive framed photograph of the Space Shuttle blasting off into space. Its signed ‘With sincere thanks’ by a member of the shuttle’s crew. It’s not just astronauts who appreciate Chris; his work to try and improve our view of the night skies is appreciated by astronomers, both amateur and professional, worldwide. Chris became interested in astronomy as a child. He grew up in an academic environment, his father was a professor, specialising in organic chemistry at Cambridge. In the 1970s infrared astronomy was taking off, and Chris completed a doctorate at Imperial College in London, before moving into other astronomical research projects in Edinburgh and Manchester. Corona Mare Copernicus andTycho

His specialised knowledge brought him to work at R.S.R.E. in Malvern in 1979 and he’s lived in the area ever since. Like many astronomers, the glow from street lamps made looking at the stars something of a challenge. In a way that only a scientist can, Chris began thinking about the problem, eventually coming up with a mathematical program to help lighting designers better understand how to reduce light pollution. His ‘Skyglow’ model conclusions have since been taken up by sections of the lighting industry and has won him the prestigious Galileo Award two years ago. Chris has the most amazing collection of night sky photographs that he’s taken over many years. As we pore over the many images of comets, gaseous nebulae, globular star clusters, galaxies and planets, he tells me it is challenging but possible with practice, thought, and with the camera fixed to a good tracking mount. ‘All of these images have been taken with standard cameras’ he says, ‘although the lens quality does need to be very good’. ‘It is quite possible to see all kinds of things in the night sky on a clear night, even with the naked eye. A pair of binoculars, with a magnification of 10x50mm is perfectly adequate to reveal thousands of stars, galaxies and nebulae’. Eclipse Corona

CHRIS’ WINTER NIGHT SKY Winter is a good time for star gazing because of the longer nights and so especially good for young people who can’t stay up late. In general the winter constellations are easily accessible and clearly discernible with many interesting things to view. Orion is ideally suited between December and February; the great Orion nebula, below Orion’s belt, is a glory to behold through binoculars. You’ll see a huge nebulous patch although not in colour because our eyes are not sensitive enough to see this at low light levels. There are many globular clusters and open clusters visible throughout the winter season. In addition there are galaxies like the Andromeda Galaxy M31 which is particularly spectacular, even through binoculars, compared with others further away. Winter is a good time to observe different planets, lower on the horizon. Hale Bopp Because both we and they revolve around the sun, the positions of the 1997 planets vary from year to year and season to season. Over the Summer and still now, Jupiter has been visible as a bright evening planet, with dim Uranus nearby; and presently Venus is visible as a bright morning planet. In September I imaged horizon to horizon shots of the spectacular Perseid meteor shower, seen by many who looked. This last mid December we had the Geminid meteor shower, best seen after the moon had set, in dark skies. Then a Lunar eclipse as it set in the morning of Dec 21st. Early January promises the Quadrantid meteor shower on the 3rd and 4th, the opportunity to see Jupiter, Uranus and Saturn, and even a partial solar eclipse at dawn on January 4th, (although you must not attempt to view this directly unless you know how to observe it safely otherwise you could be blinded). If you want to learn more I suggest contacting a local astronomical society which holds regular talks and can give help and advice with observing and suitable binoculars.
