Spoiled for choice You can’t fail to know that Worcester has a long and fascinating history. Just take a walk along Friar Street amongst its black and white buildings and you’ll get a sense of the city’s heritage that is still around us today. When it comes to local museums, we’re spoiled for choice. I love visiting the albatross, and taking a peek at the old chemist’s shop at the City Art Gallery and Museum on Foregate Street. We also have the George Marshall Medical Museum, The Museum of Royal Worcester, the Elgar Birthplace Museum at Broadheath, and several other museums besides! You can read more about a project that’s breathing new life into some of these collections on Page 6. If you’re ever looking for a day out, don’t forget – when it comes to museums we’re spoiled for choice. Have a great Christmas!
All About Worcester is distributed to 14,600 homes and businesses over two months.

Worcestershire’s Treasures feature
Have you ever marvelled at the beauty of the porcelain on display at the Museum of Royal Worcester? Or read some of the ornate medieval manuscripts held in the library at Worcester Cathedral?
Did you realise that for almost a century Kay’s of Worcester influenced the fashions of a nation? Today, the company’s archive including its famous catalogues is held by the University of Worcester, one of many collections dotted around the city that tell us much about our shared history. New life is being breathed into these archives by Worcestershire’s Treasures, a project providing training for graduates who are carrying out valuable work while learning new skills. Danielle Joyce is one of the trainees at The University of Worcester Research Collections. After gaining a degree in History she was determined to work in the Heritage Sector and moved back in with her parents in order to volunteer before applying for this traineeship. ‘As soon as I saw it advertised I knew it was perfect for me’ she says, ‘I’m learning a lot about how to manage archives which will make me much more employable.’
6
Museums Worcestershire, National Maritime Museum and the Arts Council. As well as gaining new skills, the trainees are taking some of the stories from the collections to a wider audience online. ‘We’re blogging and tweeting items that people didn’t know existed’ says Danielle, ‘and we’re also collaborating together on projects which helps Worcester’s Heritage Sector to become more prominent.’
Danielle’s work is benefitting the archive and includes cataloguing and conservation work as well as research into some of the many thousands of books and documents which it holds. The collection is notable for its children’s literature dating back to the Victorian era. Apart from offering an insight into how childhood has changed, many of the books are miniature works of art in their own right, with embossed covers and colourful illustrations.
‘This is good for Worcester’ says Alex, ‘with the opening of The Hive, the expansion of the University and this training scheme, there are exciting things happening locally in the heritage sector.’ This is the third round of traineeships for the project which is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund with additional support and funding from the University of Worcester and Worcestershire County Council. The project is managed by Museums Worcestershire.
Other trainees on the scheme are based with the George Marshall Medical Museum, Infirmary Museum, Worcester Cathedral, Art Gallery and Museum, The Elgar Birthplace Museum, Worcestershire Archive and Archaeology Service and The Museum of Royal Worcester. ‘This project allows us to pass key skills from the heritage sector to a new generation’ says Alex Kinnersley who co-ordinates the project. ‘Employment for recent graduates has been extremely hard to come by but this offers a chance to gain skills that help secure jobs.’ Previous trainees have gone on to find employment with Ironbridge Gorge Museums,
In the meantime Danielle is busy sorting out the Gordon Batho Collection – more than 4,000 text books which help to chart the history of education. ‘I’ve learnt so much and met so many interesting people’ says Danielle. ‘Without this I wouldn’t have the opportunity of training and paid employment.’

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul Papandreou feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people
money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Malvern, Worcester & Hereford areas and Paul is finding that his approach is a major
factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people
I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Recipe
Roasted Squash Nowadays squashes in many shapes and sizes are abundantly available. Grown on most allotments and available particularly from farm shops or in vegetable box schemes they are the essence of family food! I was first introduced to squash when as a new mum I was looking for organic vegetables suitable to process for weaning foods and a South African friend who stayed with us at the time showed me a few tricks on dealing with these strange looking vegetables.
Roots at Rushwick is a Worcestershire Farm Shop on the Bransford Road. 01905 421104
Serves 4
Ingredients 750g Squash 6 Beetroots 1 Medium Red Onion 75g Feta Cheese, Parsley or Coriander (optional) For the dressing 1tbsp balsamic vinegar 3 tbsp olive oil 1 crushed garlic clove salt & black pepper
Here is a recipe for a winter salad that has the advantage using roasted squash chunks turning them into a sophisticated lunch dish (also ideal for a winter buffet if you are entertaining!), but who is to say you couldn't keep some of those chunks to puree and feed the smaller members of the family at the same time!
Roasted Squash & Beetroot Salad with Red Onions 1. Firstly roast the main vegetable components. The beetroots will take about 1 hour to roast with a little oil, water in the tray which should be covered with tin foil. 2. The squash can be cut into wedges, deseeded, drizzled with olive oil and roasted with the skin on for about thirty minutes, then scooped out of the skin later. 3. The onions should be peeled and cut into wedges, tossed in olive oil and will take 20-30 minutes, you could squeeze them in the tray with the squash! 4. While the vegetables are roasting make the dressing by crushing the garlic clove and then whizzing together with the oil, vinegar, salt and pepper. 5. When you are ready to serve, toss the cool roasted vegetables in the dressing, place in a serving bowl and crumble feta cheese over the top. You can also add some freshly chopped parsley or coriander if you choose. To dress this dish up further (and given that Christmas is around the corner!) you could include some fresh orange zest and juice in the dressing and slice fresh orange segments into the salad.

Local Talent
By Dave Webber
I’m Dave Webber and I present a weekly music show on Choice Radio, the service for Worcestershire Royal Hospital. Wes Dance is a multi-talented musician from Worcester who I believe is under-rated as one of our most creative local artists.
It’s been a few years since Wes recorded any of his music. His last album, Penance, was recorded five years ago but is filled with distinctive and catchy tracks. With strong vocals and acoustic guitar, Wes mixes in other instruments that give his music an eclectic feel. Photograph: Joe Singh
‘I think that might be down to the guy who produced it’ he says. ‘I’ve known Phil Bridges since childhood but we lost touch. I came across his music again on Youtube and we got back in touch before recording the album.’ Wes has mostly taught himself to play different instruments. ‘You just keep practising until you get it right’ he says with a hint of modesty. ‘It was a friend who first got me interested in guitar’ he continues. ‘He leant me his guitar for a couple of weeks and before I knew it I was playing. I started transferring my music to piano, a few people showed me how to play it correctly and I was picking it up as I went along.’ He has been playing a lot of live shows throughout 2014, not just in Worcester but around the Birmingham area as well. It’s given him a chance to try out some of his new songs to lots of different audiences. ‘There’s a good music scene in Worcester, but its been good to play in Birmingham where people might come across your music by chance. At most gigs I’ve had people come up to me and ask where they can hear more of my music.’ Wes doesn’t have any more gigs pencilled in but expects to be up and running once the new EP is recorded. ‘I’ve had offers to play for December and January but I haven’t accepted them’ he says. ‘I’m hoping to start playing in London next year and I’m talking to contacts and old band members there.’ In a former life, Wes played in a band that performed at the Cambridge Folk Festival and
18
appeared on BBC Radio 2. As a solo performer he admits life is tougher as you only have yourself to rely on, but there are highlights as well. ‘I played at The Wychwood Festival which was good and I’m looking forward to rejoining Phil Bridges to record my new EP.’ The EP should be ready by the end of January. ‘I’ve been meaning to record something new’ says Wes, ‘but I’ve been gigging a lot and haven’t got round to it. I’ve got the songs ready and the drums are set up so I hope to start recording any day now.’
You can hear Wes Dance’s music at www.wesdance.bandcamp.com and he is available for bookings via email wes_dance@hotmail.co.uk

Well-Being
In pursuit of Exuberance By Tracy Reck, Personal Fitness Coach in Worcester If, when you’ve exercised you feel great, and by eating better you feel better, then you already know that great health - and every step towards it - leads to exuberance, the quality of being full of energy, excitement, and cheerfulness. Fitness, vegetables, water, protein, squats, sleep, meditation - all these things that we seek to master - are a means to find and experience exuberance as a permanent state. And you know what exuberance leads to? Success. In every endeavour. It’s not, as we most often think, the other way round. We think that hard work leads to success and once success is attained, happiness (exuberance by another name) will follow. But Shawn Achor has a different viewpoint. He’s an American Researcher and Teacher of Psychology whose lecture “The Happiness Advantage” is one of the most popular TED talks (a nonprofit devoted to ‘Ideas Worth Spreading’). He believes that every time you achieve success in something, you move the goalposts. Once you’ve achieved good exam results at school, you set your sights on better grades. Once you’ve got the job you wanted, you start hankering after a better one. In other words, once you hit your target, you immediately start working on a bigger, better target - which means you never actually reach success, you just keep pushing it further and further away. If you’ve tied success to happiness, you keep pushing that away too. You can’t reach it that way. Luckily for us, the research Shawn presents in his talk shows that our brains work the other way around. By feeling more positive in the
22
present, your brain experiences what he calls a ‘happiness advantage’ which means you perform significantly better than you would if you were feeling negative. Your levels of creativity and intelligence rise and so does your energy. In a nutshell, this is how we can use happiness to create success, rather than hoping success will lead to happiness. If you’re intrigued, have a watch of the full talk over Christmas - it’s at www.ted.com and it might just change your whole approach to your new year’s resolutions… Being in pursuit of exuberance is to be in pursuit of success: in pursuit of feeling amazing every day of your life; of keeping your relationships strong; of enhancing your creative streak; of becoming even more awesome than you already are! Exuberance is something really worth having. And it stems from health. Invest in that and you’re investing in everything that’s important to you.

All About...
ASPIE ASPIE is a social self-help and motivation group for adults with Asperger’s Syndrome and their families, based in Worcester. Julia Micklewright is a trustee and tells us more.
How did ASPIE came about? ASPIE was founded by my daughter Sarah who ‘got through’ school, college and university before being diagnosed with Asperger’s during accountancy training. Understanding the complexities of the condition, knowing how difficult it is to make friends and discovering a dearth of suitable opportunities where Aspies can meet and find acceptance, led her to set up ASPIE. We launched on 28 September 2011 and received charitable registration in January 2012. Adults with Asperger’s are highly intelligent but sometimes unable to communicate easily and can encounter numerous problems. They are often bullied particularly through early life, and although some are able to fit in, others do not and become withdrawn and isolated, unable to cope with everyday living.
How many members do you have? We have a database of 150 adults. Our growing membership includes adults from all walks of life from most Worcestershire towns, and, because they tell us there is no other group like us, from Birmingham, Coventry and Hereford with some travelling considerable distances to be with us. The age range is between 18 and 70 with about 25 to 35 attending each week. The success of ASPIE is important because for so long adults with Asperger’s, a hidden disability, have been forgotten. From our experience the most important need for adults with Asperger’s is acceptance, friendship and a sense of belonging, closely followed by employment and a desire to make a contribution to the community.
What sorts of activities do you offer? Primarily we are a social group where adult members with Asperger’s do not have to ‘pretend to be normal’. Our building is light and airy with several rooms ideal for splitting into different groups for computer/internet access, discussions, games, boxing on the Wii console and importantly a quiet room. The low pressure
24
environment, tailored to their needs, allows them to breathe, joining in, if they wish and at their own pace, board games, discussions and quizzes, and meals out. We are fortunate in having an excellent Australian psychologist who is able draw out members or help them address their issues on a one-to-one basis and we provide practical and emotional support at any time to members’ families.
In what practical ways does your work improve lives? We must be doing something right as many of our members have been with us since we opened in September 2011 and others travel considerable distances to be with us on Wednesdays. Members report acceptance of themselves, reduced meltdowns, reduced depression, less anxiety and self-harm. We’ve noticed a marked improvement in their confidence, wellbeing and motivation which transfers to other areas of their lives. Some have returned to university courses, others have either returned or remained in employment or gained apprenticeships. Friendships are being formed and members meet outside the group. We also see improvements in family relationships, and help on the occasions when a diagnosis leads to tensions within families. Parents and family members find much needed relief and support enabling them to carry on coping.
ASPIE meets every Wednesday 1pm to 9pm at 26 Sansome Walk, Worcester WR1 1LX. For more info, you can contact them by calling (01905) 27825, or visit their website www.aspieeverywhere.org.uk

Aladdin Vacuum your magic carpets, dust off your old lamps and get yourself down to Malvern Theatres for that most magical of Christmas family pantomimes Aladdin, from Thursday 11th December 2014 to Sunday 4th January 2015. Will Aladdin, the poor son of a laundry owner, played by Hi-5’s Chris Edgerley, get to marry the Princess played by Rebecca Marks, or will his plans be foiled by the evil Abanazar played by the one and only Robert Powell (Jesus of Nazareth, The Detectives, Holby City)? On hand to help Aladdin is the Slave of the Ring played by Carrie Rawlings, and hindering rather than helping with his hilarious antics will be Channel 5’s Milkshake presenter Derek Moran as Wishee Washee. Owner of ‘Twankey’s Laundry’, the old scrubber herself Widow Twankey is played by one of the country’s leading pantomime dames Ian Good. They’ll be joined by Mark James as PC Pong, Spencer K Gibbins as The Emperor and Connor J Barrie as The Genie. The show, with a full supporting cast, features lavish sets and costumes and a spectacular CGI flying carpet sequence. The pantomime is once again produced by UK Productions Ltd. So book today for the magic carpet ride of your life! Aladdin runs from 11th December – 4th January. Matinee and evening performances. Special Days - All Tickets £10.02, Normal Days £12.88 - £25.20 from Malvern Theatres Box Office on 01684 892277 or Malvern-Theatres.co.uk
