Editor’s message

Summer time! We’ve got lots to look forward to around the city this summer, from vintage markets to live music to events along the riverfront. Lots of these events can only happen thanks to volunteers. The Worcester Music Festival has twenty five people working behind the scenes for free, while venues make their facilities available and performers travel from across the country to donate their time and their talent. All of this effort makes a huge difference, so if you’re involved in any local events this summer, then thank you for making Worcester a great place to live!

Worcester Music Festival 29 - 31 August at Venues across the City

Three Choirs Festival 26 July – 2 August at Worcester Cathedral The Innsworth Military Wives’ Choir will be performing at this year’s Three Choirs Festival which starts on Saturday 26th July at Worcester Cathedral. The choir will be singing a programme of popular songs and marches in a concert with the Royal Marines Association Concert Band. This year’s festival has a theme reflecting the outbreak of World War One, and the opening performance is a setting of Housman’s ‘A Shropshire Lad’, written by the composer George Butterworth who was killed on a WW1 battlefield. The 450th anniversary of Shakespeare’s birth is also marked with music, and a performance of ‘Much Ado About Nothing’, a touring production by Shakespeare’s Globe. There are many other fun events, including a singing workshop titled ‘Pack Up Your Troubles’ which is a chance to explore songs from World War One. The festival finale on the night of Saturday 2nd August is entitled ‘Best of British’ and includes popular works from Handel, Elgar, and ‘glorious music loved by players, singers and audience’ according to Dr Peter Nardone, the festival’s artistic director. The festival, which is almost three centuries old, brings together internationally-known performers, and the full programme can be seen at www.3choirs.org

6

More than a thousand bands and performers applied for around 250 slots at this year’s festival – now in its seventh year, Worcester Music Festival has quickly grown into a popular weekend of live music from some of the best new acts around. A lot of the talent comes from Worcestershire and this year includes local band Bitterroots as well as bands from further afield; Fred’s House are coming from Cambridge and Xova are a reggae pop band from Birmingham. There’s also No Cars who are described as a ‘Kill Bill-esque Japanese pop rock trio’. Performances take place everywhere from pubs and clubs to cafes, historic buildings and outdoor stages, record shops and even a boat. The organisers are keen to open music to as many people as possible, and also offer workshops for both musicians and those who have never picked up an instrument before. The festival is organised by a team of volunteers and everything is completely free. For more information visit www.wumufest.co.uk

Big Dance Week 5 - 13 July An outdoor aerial performance is one of the many highlights of this year’s Big Dance Week. ‘Lovely Bugs and Other Delightful Creepy Crawlies’, involves dancers suspended on ropes from a six metre high rig which incorporates a giant spider’s web. It takes place in Gheluvelt Park on Thursday 10th July. The week is part of a national initiative promoting dance - local events are organised by Dancefest, which runs dozens of community classes across Worcestershire and Herefordshire. For details of the other dance projects and events happening locally throughout the rest of the summer, visit www.dancefest.co.uk

Worcester Festival BBC National 9 - 25 August Orchestra of Wales at Venues across the City This year’s festival is back with more than 60 events across the city during August. There’s music, exhibitions, things to do for young people, tours of local landmarks and markets. Since it began in 2002, the festival has grown year by year and describes itself as ‘a celebration of life and of Worcester and its people’. Conveniently falling during the school holidays, it offers lots of activities for children which this year include ‘Dress The Dragon’, ‘Sensational Clay’ and a workshop creating costumes, all at the City Art Gallery and Museum. The Festival reaches its finale with a firework display on Monday 25th August. For a full programme of activities, see www.worcesterfestival.co.uk

Wed 10 Sept, 7.30pm BBC National Orchestra of Wales at The University of Worcester Arena Conducted by Rory Macdonald, one of the evening’s highlights is a performance of the Elgar Cello Concerto, performed by Jamie Walton, a soloist who has performed around the world. As well as Elgar, the orchestra will also be performing work by Vaughan Williams and Dvorak. Tickets range from £15 to £28, For information please call the Arena on 0844 888 9991 or see www.ticketline.co.uk

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul Papandreou feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people

money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Malvern, Worcester & Hereford areas and Paul is finding that his approach is a major

factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people

I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

the best local summer markets Whether its arts and crafts, vintage fashion or artisan food and drink, there’s an outdoor event to fit every interest in the city this summer. Alexandra Martin looks at some of the best places around Worcester for a weekend of browsing stalls. THE WORCESTER FLEA

RIVERSIDE ARTS MARKET

The Worcester Flea takes place in Angel Place on the first Sunday of each month. There are normally around twenty stalls selling vintage clothing, jewellery and handbags, there’s books, homeware, collectible, curios, antiques, upcycled and ‘shabby chic’ furnishings, as well as handcrafted items by local designers.

This arts market takes place on three Sundays this August, along the picturesque South Quay right next to the Severn in the centre of the city.

All sorts of people come to The Flea according to Jo Bourke who helps to organise it. ‘This market has a lot of quality items’ she says. ‘It’s a really nice mix of collectibles, vintage and handmade so it’s not like a car boot or your average market. My favourite things are the unique items, you never know what you’re going to find.’ The market is now three years old, and visitors come from near and far to look around. Samantha Pugh has been selling at the Flea since last year, offering jewellery, handmade cushions, patchwork throws and heart garlands amongst other things. All the items are made by her and she likes to make things as affordable as possible that look as nice as possible. ‘My prices are reasonable as I’d rather sell things - if you price things too high you just carry the same stock around.’ Describing the Flea, Samantha says ‘The atmosphere is friendly and relaxed. I will be selling at the next Worcester Flea, I’m booked in all year. People should visit as it offers something different. There’s a mix of stalls and it’s always interesting.’ The Worcester Flea at Crowngate Outdoor Market is on 6th July, 3rd August and 7th September between 10.30am and 4.30pm. For more information see theworcesterflea.co.uk

10

The market has taken place for the last nine years and is a popular way to spend a summer Sunday in Worcester. Stalls are run by artists and craftsmen, who display paintings, photography, cards and hand crafted items. It’s a chance to pick up something for yourself or find a unique birthday or anniversary present. The Riverside Arts Market takes place on Sunday 10th, Sunday 17th and Sunday 24th August between 11am and 5pm. It forms part of the Worcester Festival, for more information visit www.worcesterfestival.co.uk WORCESTER ARTS, CRAFT, FOOD & DRINK MARKET Now in its sixth year, this popular market in the city centre has grown to include local artisan food and drink producers as well as a mix of art and craft stalls. It takes place on Saturday 16th August between 9am and 5.30pm, for information see www.boffyartsandevents.com

Worcester Roots Foundation By Alexandra Martin Worcester Roots Foundation is a charity which aims to raise awareness of sustainability issues in the local community. Alexandra Martin has been finding out more. Worcester Roots Foundation is a small charity with a big ambition. ‘We’re currently looking for an appropriate local location to create an ‘Earth Ship’ similar to the Brighton Earthship’ says Natasha Giaquinto who is the project’s manager. The building in Brighton is a community centre and ‘green’ building, built with recycled materials and using the earth’s natural systems to provide heat, power and water. ‘It’s an inspiration to us’ says Natasha, ‘our young people have already worked with architects to draw up a proposal, but currently we can’t take it further without land on which to construct it’. In the meantime, Roots has recently opened a new ‘Eco Hub’ in Cathedral Plaza to promote local environmental awareness. It’s run by volunteers and as well as holding regular craft sessions, the hub is a place for people to find out about the many other activities run by volunteers.

have a long-term future. Volunteers meet every Thursday to discuss ideas and make plans for new projects. They also take part in events in the community and meet a variety of people. Newly appointed staff member Emma Worman says the best thing about being involved is meeting people. ‘We meet everyone. People of different ages, people of different abilities, it’s a really welcoming environment for anyone that has a disability as well and that’s not something that you necessarily get in your day to day life.’ Rhys Astbury-Jones feels the charity has helped him make friends for life. ‘I absolutely adore it, there are so many things I like. This group has helped me build up friendships, I’m still friends with people I met here on my very first day. It’s helped build my confidence, it’s given me skills, and it’s just a wonderful environment.’

‘Volunteers are at the heart of absolutely everything that we do’ says Natasha. ‘They continuously amaze me. It’s so nice to be able to work with a bunch of young people that actually want to give something back and really contribute. The passion and the drive of the young people keeps us going.’ Set up six years ago, the group became a registered charity in 2010 and is run by a steering group. Last year around fifty people were involved in different activities, which include a weekly food co-op using local produce. ‘People order food from us’ says Natasha, ‘which is harvested and brought to us before they pick it up’. By generating income in this way, Roots doesn’t rely on grant funding, which it hopes will help it to

12

If you’re interested in volunteering for Worcester Roots Foundation or if you can work in the hub, contact Natasha on (01905) 24741 or visit The Eco Hub in Cathedral Plaza on Monday (Midday4pm), Thursday (10am-4pm) or Saturday (11am-4pm). You can read more at worcesterrootsfoundation.org.uk

A Dream Start for Worcester-based Kitchen Makeover Specialists Just one year ago there was nothing. Now, more than 150 kitchens later, the Worcester franchise of the UK’s largest kitchen facelift company, Dream Doors, has a portfolio bulging with satisfied customers. Run from a showroom on The Tything by husband and wife team, Mark and Dionne Battin, and Senior Sales consultant Jean Clutterbuck, the business supplies a cost and time saving kitchen door replacement service, as well as complete new kitchens – all fitted by approved and vetted local installers. “Last year was phenomenal – even better than we could have imagined,” says Dionne. “And the reasons for it? I believe we offer an outstanding product and service, and we deliver it in a manner that ensures total customer satisfaction. When a customer places an order, we only take a 50 percent deposit. The balance is then paid upon successful completion of the work. This means the customer is in total control, which means we have to do a good job! If we didn’t fulfil our promises, we wouldn’t be here today.” She adds: “Whatever our customers want, we’re almost always able to say yes to them. If they

need some new doors to fit an existing kitchen, we can supply made-to-measure replacements that can be fitted in just one day. If they want to incorporate worktops and a sink, or even a total refurbishment, we sell some of the best products around at very competitive prices.” “But it’s not just about price with our customers,” adds Mark. “They want to feel reassured that their money is safe, and to know that we will do a good job. Well, you only have to look at the Dream Doors website to realise we aren’t just an independent local family run business. With over 50 branches across the country and a fifteen year history, we are part of a national brand - and the biggest name in kitchen facelifts.” Contact Dionne or Mark on 01905 887548, visit www.dreamdoors.co.uk or call into the showroom at 42 The Tything on your next visit to the city.

Well-Being

What is it about short term ‘plans’? By Tracy Reck, Personal Fitness Coach in Worcester Open up a health magazine or step inside a fitness club these days and you’ll probably see an “Eight Week Programme” for this or a “Thirty Day” plan for that. They’re everywhere these days, and although we know that achieving great health and fitness is a lifelong endeavour, there must be something about these short term sprints that just does it for us. What is it? Quite possibly, it’s that as humans we have the attention span of a gnat. Okay, maybe it’s not that short, but for any given task we do it can be anywhere from 8 seconds to 40 minutes that we are capable of staying absorbed. If you watch any soaps or drama series, you can see this for yourself. Ever notice the amount of storylines happening at any one time, and the amount of time one scene runs for before jumping to another? It seems we need constant stimulation, distraction and shiny new things that catch our interest, and that’s only becoming greater as technology takes over more and more of our lives enabling us to keep Facebook streams, email inboxes and Twitter feeds in our pocket.

We are divided creatures - you’re probably a family member, employee, business person, community member, spiritual soul, all mashed together and living in one skin. Being undivided and laser focused with all these different hats we can only sustain it for so long. By doing an 8 week programme or a 30 day plan, you can change - and learn - a lot. It’s amazing what we can make happen when we really go for it. We just need a plan for the end if we want to make the changes and the learning we got from our laser focus stick.

With that in mind, is it any wonder that when it comes to bigger projects that engage our attention, we struggle to wrap our heads around “a lifelong effort” and prefer instead to commit ourselves to going at something for a few weeks? Let’s face it, whenever we try to change something as significant as our bodies, we need to throw ourselves into it. And that has to come at a cost. Other priorities slide down the list, but they don’t disappear. Sensible then, really, that we give ourselves a definable end point, knowing as we do that it’s inevitable that we can only hold off so long before everything else that needs our attention comes crashing back into our day to day existence.

Warm water is used in physiotherapy to speed recovery from injuries and relieve muscle soreness by facilitating the removal of lactic acid, opening the blood vessels to improve circulation and help the muscles around arthritic joints to relax. Hydromassage has been shown to stimulate endorphins, the natural painkiller and feel good hormone, thus reducing both physical tension and mental stress. All Jacuzzi® Hot Tubs are designed around the optimal jet formation, position of jets and shaping of the product around the jets which is critical in providing an all-over invigorating and therapeutic hydromassage. Local Talent

By Dave Webber

I’m Dave Webber and I present a weekly music show on Choice Radio, the service for Worcestershire Royal Hospital. Answer Back are an exciting Pop Rock trio made up of of drummer Chris Lewin, Jim Smith on bass and guitarist Oli Grizzell.

Oli’s background is in music technology and production, something that’s interested him since he was at school. He met Jim at an open mic night when they discovered a lot of common ground in their musical ambitions. Chris Lewin the drummer had been in other bands before meeting with Oli and Jim, together they developed and created their band, aiming to be fresh and original. The band pride themselves on creating solid tunes suitable for all and with strong lyrics. ‘We were looking for something that was a bit rebellious but had another message behind it’ says Oli. ‘The thing with Answer Back is you won’t find a band like us anywhere else. We have family-orientated lyrics, we’re not singing about drugs and booze and stuff, but that’s not at the expense of giving the audience a good time! We are explosive, energetic and entertaining with the bonus of appealing to younger audiences because of the good natured intentions behind our music.’ Their music is rock-oriented, upbeat and full of energy with three part harmonies and catchy lyrics. Oli believes their inspiration is the key to their unique sound. ‘I love my pop, I like the sound you get from McFly’ he says, ‘Jim is an amazing Blink182 fan, he loves his punk, and Chris is a massive Green Day fan so you mix those genres together you have pop, rock and punk. It’s a really nice blend.’

Officially together for two years, Answer Back write all their own lyrics and fund a lot of the business themselves. Family and friends have always been there and have supported them from the beginning. They now have their Debut EP out called ‘Here’s The Message’ which can be found on iTunes. They clearly believe in playing live, because there’s been a steady list of gigs all of last year and the first part of 2014. They’re playing gigs around Worcestershire in June and July before returning to Worcester on 30th August at The Pheasant. You can read about them and hear their music on their website which is answerbackofficial.co.uk

You can hear more of Dave’s interviews with local musicians on Choice Radio at choiceradio. org.uk and clicking on Live! In the Past. Choice is the hospital radio service for the Worcestershire Royal Hospital in Worcester, a voluntary service broadcasting a wide variety of music and programmes for patients seven days a week.

Malvern Theatre News

Who’s Afraid of Virgina Woolf? Edward Albee’s scintillating masterpiece takes place during the course of one brutal and hilarious night when George, a college professor, and his wife, Martha, invite a young couple back for late-night drinks after a faculty party. As the alcohol flows, the guests are coerced into witnessing and participating in George and Martha’s sadistic game-playing and vitriolic verbal scrapping which reaches its climax in a momentous revelation. First staged on Broadway in 1962, the impact of the vicious wit, frank language and riveting characters firmly established Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? as one of the great plays in post-war American drama, winner of the Tony and Critics’ Circle Awards for Best New Play. Its reputation was further enhanced by Mike Nichols’s 1966 film adaptation, starring Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, which won 5 Oscars. Claire Higgins is one of the finest actresses of her generation, the winner of three Olivier Best Actress Awards. Tim Pigott-Smith’s recent stage work includes The Tempest in Bath, Albee’s A Delicate Balance for the Almedia; King Lear, Stroke of Luck and Enron. Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf runs from 7th July – 12th July. Eves 7.30pm, Wed and Sat Mats 2.30pm. Tickets from £17.36 - £31.92 from Malvern Theatres Box Office on 01684 892277 or www.malvern-theatres.co.uk
