Editor’s message

Summer time! Lots of people are working hard right now to make sure the weekend of 21st and 22nd June is a special one in St John’s. On Saturday 21st there is a fete, a craft fair and many other activities in and around the church. On Sunday 22nd, Minifest returns to Cripplegate Park with a free afternoon of music. If the weather stays fine this summer (fingers crossed!), there’s plenty more free weekend entertainment, including Bands in the Park. On most Sundays through the summer there will be a mix of traditional brass bands or jazz music playing in either Gheluvelt or Cripplegate Parks. Check out our website allaboutworcester.com for more ideas on how to spend your summer in the city.

Minifest Sun 22 June Starts at Midday in Cripplegate Park

With thanks to Geoff Robinson & Youthcomm for the photos

St John’s Fete Sat 21 June From children’s activities to art and even archery, there will be lots to do around the centre of St John’s for this year’s fete. ‘This will be the start of a whole weekend of fun’ says Hayley Sherwood from the St Johns Traders Association. ‘St John’s is a village within the city and we hope our event will bring the whole community together.’ The Fete is centred around the church, with face painting and children’s activities, stalls to browse and a barbecue run by local butchers Dayus and Narraway’s. A Craft Fayre will run inside the church and there are plans for an exhibition of old photographs, showing the history of the area. More events will be happening in St John’s Library, while individual shops and businesses will be running their own activities as well. ‘It should be a lot of fun to spend the day browsing from place to place’ says Hayley. ‘Many of the businesses here are family run and have been in the same family for generations, this will be a chance to discover more about how much the area offers.’ ‘There is lots of organising to do and if anybody can volunteer some time to help we’d be really grateful. It will be lots of fun and give the local community a day to remember’. If you would like to help out, get in touch with Gina at H Dayus Butchers, or via the Traders Association website, stjohnsworcester.co.uk.

Minifest is a free event offering a relaxed afternoon of live music where you can settle back and enjoy the entertainment. ‘This is very much an event for the community where we celebrate some of the best local music’ says Dave Wooldridge, who’s fronting this year’s event for Youthcomm Radio. Minifest has become an annual fixture in the park and is steadily growing. Last year’s event saw an audience of four thousand people and the organisers expect it to be even bigger this time around. ‘We know this is an event that people love’ says Dave, ‘and we always manage to attract a mix of local talent plus some well known up and coming bands. This year there’s more than twelve acts, with performances from Tom Barnwell and Beth McCarthy who are well known for their appearances on The Voice on BBC One. The headline act is a local band and another of our artists has supported Bon Jovi.’ Joining Dave to host the afternoon is Liam Cash, the breakfast presenter from Youthcomm Radio. 'This is Worcester’s biggest party’ says Dave, 'its become such a big thing and we’re proud to have helped create something that is so much fun.’ The entertainment begins at Midday in Cripplegate Park, with the music continuing through the afternoon. There will also be a Minifest Market and children’s activities. For updates see youthcomm.co.uk.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul Papandreou feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people

money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Malvern, Worcester & Hereford areas and Paul is finding that his approach is a major

factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people

I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

barely used baby stuff By Alexandra Martin There are plenty of ways to buy and sell secondhand goods online, but a new site hopes to become the place for parents to buy, sell and donate children’s toys, clothing and equipment. Alexandra meets the woman from Worcester who has created Barely Used Baby Stuff. Charlotte Brennan wanted to change the way families buy things. ‘I thought there was a gap in the market after my children were born’ she tells me. ‘I started using Facebook selling pages, but it was hard to determine the quality of clothing and other items. I’ve used eBay but if you’re searching for something specific there might only be seven of it available and they are dotted all around the country. I wanted a pure focus on baby items for those people who might suddenly find themselves needing specific items.’ The Barely Used Baby Stuff website is a quick way to look at items in your local area. It’s really easy to use and if you want to sell or donate then registering only requires a few basic details. You can look through different categories of items available, search for specific items and even select a distance from where you live. Once you like the look of something, you click buy and then chat with the seller about meeting up and paying for the item in cash. In this way you can see what you are getting before you decide to pay. The website is free, safe and easy to use. ‘The idea is that people will meet up at a baby group or somewhere to make the exchange’ says Charlotte. ‘They can make sure they are getting what they want and pay for it. Although there isn’t any transaction online, buyers still click ‘buy it’, then a messaging service within the site allows the buyer and the seller to meet. There is no giving away of personal details as everything is done through the website.’ The business is set up as a Community Interest Company and aims to cover its running costs through Feature Advertisements, which highlight relevant businesses that serve new parents. Things only got off the ground with a modest

10

financial award from UnLtd, a national provider of investment support to individuals whose ventures deliver positive social change. ‘After having twin boys I found myself immersed in a new life, and was ready to move forward from my career in Arts Management Consultancy’ Charlotte says. ‘I wanted a job that would fit around having children and I was keen to utilise my professional skills in a way that addressed the issue all new parents face - the cost of all the paraphernalia that comes with having babies!’

You can visit the Barely Used Baby Stuff website at barelyusedbabystuff.co.uk The business is also on Twitter: @bubs_cic and on facebook.com/ barelyusedbabystuff

How to Save Thousands on a New Kitchen Our kitchens have changed dramatically over time. Drawers are wider, appliances are smarter and you can now make a cup of tea straight from the tap. But, despite years of innovation, much of what we do in the kitchen remains the same. We still need a sink and a tap and a work surface. We rely on ovens to heat, dishwashers to clean and fridges to keep everything fresh. And, of course, we need cupboards to store our pots and pans as well as the myriad implements and ingredients every home cook requires.

All of which raises the question many kitchen companies would prefer we didn’t ask: if the layout of our kitchens are just as they should be, then why bother changing the cupboards?

Dream Doors Worcester, based on The Tything, is a family-run business owned by Dionne and Mark Battin who also employ Jean Clutterbuck, their Senior Sales Consultant.

But not every kitchen company is the same. There are those, like kitchen facelift retailer Dream Doors, that specialise in kitchen makeovers which, typically, involves swapping the doors and drawer fronts with made-to-measure replacements, then adding new work surfaces, a sink and taps. Crucially, though, the existing base and wall units remain untouched.

“Most people are looking for reassurance,” says Dionne. “They want to know they can trust us with their homes and that we’ll deliver on our promises. Customers also appreciate the fact that we’re local business owners. That we’re accountable.”

Dream Doors, a national company with a showroom in Worcester has tens-of-thousands of satisfied customers to its name. By choosing a kitchen facelift those customers saved thousands of pounds and avoided the upheaval of a full kitchen refit, as most Dream Doors makeovers are completed in just a couple of days.

The couple welcome feedback through the independent consumer monitoring website, Checkatrade.com, getting an average score of 9.8 out of 10. A customer in Worcester gave the Battins top marks recently, writing: “Clean and efficient work. I was delighted with the result. Have recommended to neighbours.” Contact Dionne or Mark on 01905 887602 or visit www.dreamdoors.co.uk

Well-Being

Boost your willpower

in 2 easy steps

By Tracy Reck, Personal Fitness Coach in Worcester When your favourite treat is in plain view, it’s an immediate reward. The temptation it brings is pretty overwhelming. This isdopamine at work. Dopamine is the active agent in your reward system. A brain chemical that fills you with the desire, the motivation, the need to act. It’s released any time you come upon something that you feel - at a conscious or unconscious level will make you feel good. And once it is released, you’ll feel like a heat seeking missile, except the heat you’ll be seeking will be chocolate, wine, late night tv, bargains, funny videos on youtube... Longer term future rewards, imagined and present only in your mind, are left in the dust. Your prefrontal cortex (where your willpower lives) isn’t strong enough to cause you to act on those when dopamine is around. Chocolate brownie versus being slimmer in a couple of months? Late night tv now or feeling brighter in the morning? Buying something now or having more money in your savings down the line? Which one’s going to win? It’s a no brainer, right? We need to make the prefrontal cortex strong enough to overrule the dopamine. How? Here’s one way: practice sloooooow breathing. This tactic comes into its own when you’re in the midst of a willpower challenge, staring down a brownie, say, and that’s one of the best times to use it. It activates your prefrontal cortex, which makes slow breathing willpower’s “on” switch. Whatever your willpower challenge, when those cravings come up, deliberately slow your breathing down. Don’t hold your breath, but inhale and exhale more slowly.

Here’s a different one: put some yards between you and the immediate reward. Delaying by 10 minutes works. Delay your immediate reward (and preferably put it out of sight) by 10 minutes, and you’ll massively increase the chances of you beating it altogether - because you’ll have made it into a future reward. Cool, huh?! With a willpower challenge for something you need to do less of (eg. eating less chocolate) this is pretty straightforward. Wait 10 minutes and then tell yourself you can indulge if you so wish. You probably won’t - especially if during your 10 minutes, you focus your mind on the real future reward - your goal. With a willpower challenge you need to do more of (eg. doing more exercise) do 10 minutes and tell yourself you can stop after 10. Again, focus your mind on the real future reward and odds are that you’ll keep going. Squash the dopamine and activate your prefrontal cortex. And in so doing, put your rational self - the self that makes the goals in the first place - in a better position to control your behaviour.

Worcestershire LitFest Over ten days in June there will be poetry, readings and performance across the city and the county for this year’s Worcestershire LitFest. Maggie Doyle is one of the festival’s directors and tells us more. There is so much going on at this year's festival, but among the many highlights is a visit from Mike Harding, who will be reading some of his poetry at Avoncroft Museum. There is an event at the Severn Valley Railway with the Steam Poets, and we’re organising a coach trip around Worcester where poets will join the trip and recite poems along the way. We also held a writing competition for young people which this year has seen more than 100 entries which is excellent. The winner will be announced at the opening of the festival on June 20th at the Guildhall in Worcester, after the announcement of the fourth Worcestershire Poet Laureate. We’ve given the festival a new name this year and adapted what we do. We asked the public to help us choose what sorts of things they want to see. We want to be a community festival but we are staying true to our core value which is to raise the profile of the written and spoken word. Our reputation is spreading and more people are showing an interest in this festival. There is so much heritage to explore in this part of the world, one of our events is a Pilgrim Workshop in the crypt of the cathedral. After an introductory talk about the Worcester Pilgrim we will hold a poetry workshop on the same theme. As well as the festival, the fringe continues throughout the year with events taking place both for children and adults. On the second Thursday of every month we hold SpeakEasy – our poetry/ prose/storytelling performance evening at the Old Rectifying House, which is an opportunity to enjoy readings by both established as well as emerging writers. This is rapidly becoming our jewel in the festival crown!

20

Running a festival like this is hard work but we are keen to see it grow and many different people have put a huge amount of time and energy into this. It is hard work but it is very touching to see so many different people striving to make it happen. We are always looking for volunteers to help with organising; the chaperoning of guests and helping out at events. It’s lots of fun and if you’re interested then please either visit our website or email me, maggiedoyle_poet@yahoo.co.uk

Local Talent

By Dave Webber

I’m Dave Webber and I present a weekly music show on Choice Radio, the service for Worcestershire Royal Hospital. Answer Back are an exciting Pop Rock trio made up of of drummer Chris Lewin, Jim Smith on bass and guitarist Oli Grizzell.

Oli’s background is in music technology and production, something that’s interested him since he was at school. He met Jim at an open mic night when they discovered a lot of common ground in their musical ambitions. Chris Lewin the drummer had been in other bands before meeting with Oli and Jim, together they developed and created their band, aiming to be fresh and original. The band pride themselves on creating solid tunes suitable for all and with strong lyrics. ‘We were looking for something that was a bit rebellious but had another message behind it’ says Oli. ‘The thing with Answer Back is you won’t find a band like us anywhere else. We have family-orientated lyrics, we’re not singing about drugs and booze and stuff, but that’s not at the expense of giving the audience a good time! We are explosive, energetic and entertaining with the bonus of appealing to younger audiences because of the good natured intentions behind our music.’ Their music is rock-oriented, upbeat and full of energy with three part harmonies and catchy lyrics. Oli believes their inspiration is the key to their unique sound. ‘I love my pop, I like the sound you get from McFly’ he says, ‘Jim is an amazing Blink182 fan, he loves his punk, and Chris is a massive Green Day fan so you mix those genres together you have pop, rock and punk. It’s a really nice blend.’

Officially together for two years, Answer Back write all their own lyrics and fund a lot of the business themselves. Family and friends have always been there and have supported them from the beginning. They now have their Debut EP out called ‘Here’s The Message’ which can be found on iTunes. They clearly believe in playing live, because there’s been a steady list of gigs all of last year and the first part of 2014. They’re playing gigs around Worcestershire in June and July before returning to Worcester on 30th August at The Pheasant. You can read about them and hear their music on their website which is answerbackofficial.co.uk

You can hear more of Dave’s interviews with local musicians on Choice Radio at choiceradio. org.uk and clicking on Live! In the Past. Choice is the hospital radio service for the Worcestershire Royal Hospital in Worcester, a voluntary service broadcasting a wide variety of music and programmes for patients seven days a week.
