Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul Papandreou feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people

money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Malvern, Worcester & Hereford areas and Paul is finding that his approach is a major

factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people

I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

All About...

Worcester Ramblers Group Walking is one of the easiest ways to get more active, lose weight and become healthier. Regular walking has been shown to reduce the risk of chronic illnesses, such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, asthma, stroke and some cancers. With Spring just around the corner, Cliff Dimond, Chairman of The Worcester Group of The Ramblers tells us about their activities and how you can get involved.

How often does the group get out walking? Our walk programme typically offers at least two walks each week, one mid-week and one at the weekend. Some weeks we might put on as many as four different walks. The walks can take place over full days, half days or evenings. The lengths are typically between 7 and 24 kms (4 and 15 miles). Walk details are included on our website.

Where are the best places locally for your walks? Our walks take place anywhere in the lovely countryside of Worcestershire, Herefordshire, Shropshire or the Cotswolds. We meet at a prearranged location, normally within easy reach of Worcester, Droitwich, Malvern or Tenbury Wells although sometimes we will schedule a coach trip. One thing is certain; our walkers will see views, features, buildings, flora and fauna that they would otherwise seldom be likely to experience.

What kinds of people are members? We are a friendly and sociable group of walkers with currently over 400 members from all walks of life and age groups. Some members like to walk regularly and prefer challenging routes; others walk infrequently and prefer gentler routes. There are no expectations and members choose walks from the programme that suit them.

Apart from organising walks, what else does your group do? We have a working party of volunteers that liaises with the Worcestershire Countryside Service to improve access to and safety of our footpaths and bridleways. Tasks can range from vegetation clearance to constructing small bridges. The working party currently operates every 4-6 weeks and we are always looking for additional volunteers.

6

We also organise social events such as pub nights and our special events programme for 2014 includes a walking week in the Peak District National Park; an eleven day walking holiday in Mallorca; our 25-year anniversary celebrations; a weekend of walking and canoeing at Lucksall Park; a walking week in Buttermere; our annual long distance walk (St Cuthbert’s Way); plus various one day coach based excursions.

Can people come and meet your group and try a walk before becoming a member? New walkers are welcome to come and try a few walks free of charge before joining the Ramblers so there is no problem with visiting us to test the group out and we are always happy to meet and greet new people. Newcomers can check the description and length of the walks and choose those that they consider within their capability. If they are new to walking we recommend trying some short walks first.

Full details of all our walks, events, holidays and lots of other information can be found on our website at www.worcesterramblers.org. uk or alternatively, people can contact Dave or Sandra on 01386 556543

Community Group

St Richard’s Worcester Whether it’s running a marathon, walking the length of the Malvern Hills or even skydiving, dozens of fundraising events are planned to mark the thirtieth anniversary of St. Richard’s Hospice. Since it was founded in 1984 it has cared for thousands of individuals and their families. Rachel Jones from the Hospice’s Partnerships and Events Fundraising team tells us more.

We’re using our anniversary year to organise many special fundraising events. Every year we need to raise almost 70 percent of our running costs from voluntary donations. In the current financial year that target was £6.7 million and thanks to the hard work and generosity of local people and businesses, we can continue to provide our services. Perhaps our most exciting fundraising event this year takes place on 20th September, when the Northern Belle, one of the Orient Express trains, will take paying guests on a luxurious journey from Worcester. After enjoying brunch on the train, guests will arrive in Bath for a day of sightseeing before the homeward journey which includes a champagne dinner. Some of the people who have already booked tickets are treating loved ones, or celebrating a birthday or special anniversary. It will truly be a very unique and memorable day. There are literally dozens of other events and challenges, many of which are seriously demanding! Our full and half-marathon takes place on 4th May with a route taking in the beautiful countryside to the east of Worcester. Our Malvern Hills Walk on 17th May is a popular annual event and we have a number of different distances to suit all abilities. We will be walking the Worcestershire Way from Bewdley to Malvern, there’s a four day cycling challenge from London to Paris, we even have an ‘Ultra-Challenge’ where the aim is to cover 52 miles by walking or running and within 24 hours. If you are brave enough, we have Sponsored Skydiving taking place in June and September. We organise fundraising treks abroad, this year

10

our sponsored trekkers will be heading to Burma. It will be an amazing experience and should help us to reach our fundraising target. We always organise lots of social events, at the moment we’re just putting the finishing touches to a Bollywood Evening which will be held in June, with an indian banquet, music and dancing. We hope to make it as authentic as possible and we’ll encourage guests to come dressed in traditional indian attire. Towards the end of this year we’ll be holding our Lights of Love evening once again. We start at Worcester Cathedral, where there’s a chance to come together and reflect on loved ones that people might have lost. We then process along Deansway to our Christmas Tree next to St Andrew’s Spire, where each light on the tree is sponsored to commemorate a loved one. As well as the many generous donations from individuals, we are fortunate to be supported by many local companies. We’re always very grateful for more corporate help, its not just about financial donations but also gifts donated for auction, the use of a venue or the time of staff for volunteering duties. We have around 1,000 volunteers who help at the hospice or act as marshals and stewards at events, we really couldn’t survive without them. There are many different ways to support us in this, our 30th year, and if you think you can help then please call us, or take a look on our website.

The Hospice can be contacted on (01905) 763963 or via the website, www.strichards.org.uk

Worcestershire Association of Carers It’s estimated that 63,000 people across Worcestershire are unpaid carers, looking after a relative or a friend. It can be a demanding, difficult and sometimes unrecognised role according to Worcestershire Association of Carers. ‘There are more people in this situation than many of us realise and the numbers continue to grow’ says James Harris from the Association of Carers. ‘They might be caring for a spouse or elderly relative who can no longer look after themselves, or looking after someone who is disabled or terminally ill. All our support services are free and we help people in many different ways.’ ‘Perhaps our most important service is the Carers’ Helpline’ says James, ‘which offers basic advice and is often people’s first point of contact with us. ‘When people first contact us we look at all aspects of their caring role; how they are coping practically, but also the emotional and financial impact on their lives. As well as giving advice we often refer them on to other organisations in the county that will be able to offer them further help.’ The Association also runs ‘Talk Time’, a volunteer run service which offers friendship and a listening ear to carers who become isolated from the outside world because of the demands on their time. ‘They don’t necessarily talk much about the issues around caring’ says James, ‘its more of a chance just to have a chat about what’s been on tv, or other things going on in their lives.’ Regular courses and practical sessions are also very popular. ‘Our Legal and Financial course helps people with areas as diverse as setting up a trust, writing a will or navigating their way through the care system’ says James. ‘We also run Caring with Confidence sessions which gives carers practical ways in which they can deal with

14

the day to day challenges they face. We run these courses at a variety of locations and in the evening as well as during the daytime, so that people can find a course that fits around their lives.’ There is a GP Support Service, that helps both carers and local health and social care services to make sure people have the correct help, and the Association runs twelve Carers’ Groups across Worcestershire. ‘These are a chance for people to meet others in a similar situation’ says James Harris. ‘These are all run by volunteers and meet once a month. The most valuable thing is carers helping each other and sharing advice that’s invaluable.’ ‘We help around 8,500 people in Worcestershire which is still only a small number of the total number of unpaid carers’ says James. ‘Part of the difficulty is that a lot of people caring for somebody don’t even see themselves as a carer. We do our best to reach out to these people and try to raise awareness of the help they can access through us.’

The Carers’ Helpline can be reached on 0300 012 4272 between 9am & 7pm Monday to Friday, and between 9am and Midday on Saturdays.

dealing with health professionals and care homes and suddenly it stopped. Having professional support on board has helped me to rebuild my world piece by piece. You never get over losing somebody but you have to rebuild your world and keep busy.

Erika's Story Erika from St. John's in Worcester cared around the clock for both her husband and mother, before losing them both within 8 months of each other. ‘I cared for my husband for four years after he was diagnosed with cancer. At the same time my mother had a series of mini strokes. I'm an only child so I had to care for them all on my own. Its mentally, emotionally and physically draining. I felt my world had been shattered and you have to deal with it; you can't escape it. It’s very demanding, you're dealing with it 24/7 you may have to go to hospital in the middle of the night. You're on tenterhooks all the time. Watching somebody you love suffer is very difficult. I wanted to wave a magic wand and make it go away, but you can't, its there in front of you all of the time. I always had to pretend to be chirpy and happy which was very difficult because inside I was dying. You'd put on a smile and try to appear positive and happy. I always put others before myself because they were the most important thing in my life. Those two people were my world and when they died it was like part of me died. I felt redundant; I had been a full time carer,

Worcestershire Association of Carers have been fantastic. If I needed help with something there was always phone support. I attended a monthly group where I could talk to other carers, who are the best people to talk to because they're living and breathing it every day. You can pick up tips and ideas and you realise you're all in the same boat. I also attended the Association's bereavement course and discovered other people felt the same way that I did. I suddenly realised that I wasn't the only person going through this on my own, but that every day somebody else will walk in my shoes.’

Watch a film about Worcestershire Association of Carers on our website: www.allaboutworcester.com Worcestershire Association of Carers always needs volunteers to help to run its support services. Well-Being

Fitness

Is there a short cut? By Tracy Reck, Personal Fitness Coach in Worcester I don’t know about you, but I’m getting really tired of seeing “super fast weight loss!” stories. “Lose your baby weight in 2 weeks!” “Drop a stone in 9 days!” Really? Really?! As a personal trainer, I’m meant to buy into all that. I’m supposed to be all about getting amazing results in a super-speedy time, and whilst that is possible, it’s just not the reality for most of us. The stories are intended to be motivating. But by continually holding up the success stories of the high flyers and making people believe that it’s the norm, the main result being achieved is this: the disheartening and demoralising of people who have hopes and goals around their own health and fitness but who aren’t achieving these lightning speed results; so figure they must be doing something wrong. I’ve been there too. When I was a newbie business owner, I met someone who used to leave me feeling quite awe-inspired because they’d achieved masses in their new business in a pretty short space of time. But on days when I wasn’t feeling so positive, I’d compare my first 18 months with theirs and feel completely deflated. I’d wonder what I was, or wasn’t doing that was preventing me from reaching those same heights that they had done. What was I doing wrong? Then I learnt the truth behind that shiny, impressive, high achieving exterior. They started their entrepreneurial career when they were 14. They are 33 now. I started mine when I was 32 and I’m 34 now. All of a sudden, the first 18 months of our respective businesses are no longer comparable. Do you think the same is true of health? That the people who are getting results in record time more than likely laid the groundwork for that success through previous attempts and a history of working towards it? I believe it is. It took me seven years of concerted effort from when I decided to do something deliberate about my fitness, body shape and health to get into the shape I’m in today. And that

18

isn’t accounting for all the foundational stuff I did as a kid, where my dad played cricket with me in the park and made me walk to school every day and so on. All that had an impact too. The truth is that getting in shape takes a while. Super quick weight loss is possible for some, but the results rarely last and often cause rebound weight gain. Slow and steady is the way to go, and yes, that sounds super dull. I know. Changing your eating habits and getting to grips with exercise requires not just your actions but also your brain to change. Think of a time you learnt a new skill, like playing the piano or even learning to drive. In the same way, being “in shape” is a skill we must learn. The interesting difference is that nobody expects to be able to find a “quick fix” that will have them playing Beethoven within three weeks. It’s exactly the same with weight loss. For that too, we have to learn new techniques, like how to get flavour into potentially boring ingredients. New practices, like getting up a bit earlier to prepare food for the day. New information, like which foods stimulate fat burning rather than fat storing hormones. Then we have to practise our butts off. And that takes time.

Learn the Art of massage

All kinds of people come to Sarah Cohen to learn the art of massage. ‘On a course last year we had every decade represented, from one student in their 20s right through to someone in their 70s! They were from all kinds of backgrounds including a fire officer and a credit controller.’ Based at The Fold at Bransford, Sarah is part of the team at The Bristol College of Massage and Bodywork which began almost thirty years ago and has built its reputation on teaching a holistic approach to massage, drawing techniques from different traditions. Students are taught the principles of anatomy, physiology and pathology which is integrated into the core techniques of massage.

minimise strain on their own bodies when giving a massage, as the process can be quite intense. No prior knowledge is needed’ adds Sarah, ‘it’s a very enjoyable weekend and is for people who just want to use massage for their mates or for those who are thinking of turning it into a profession.’

‘Our strength is that we take a person-centred approach to teaching, rather than simply giving students a routine to follow’ says Sarah. ‘One student once described our technique as being a bit like a horse whisperer, there’s no overload of rules and information, they simply found themselves doing it correctly!’ Massage works physically to relax tight muscles and improve circulation. It can improve wellbeing for some people at an emotional level as well. ‘We developed our current mode of training around fifteen years ago. There are several key principles of massage but our training remains person-centred and we work to help students develop their own style. The course is quite intense and our students develop a long way during eleven sessions through almost a year.’ After training, some students begin working as massage therapists around existing jobs while one or two take it up as their main profession. There are also four introductory weekend workshops per year, where the programme might include self-massage as well as working with a partner on shoulders, the back, legs, arms or face. ‘We also teach students how to

Local Talent

By Dave Webber

I’m Dave Webber and I present a weekly show highlighting local music talent on Choice Radio, the service for Worcestershire Royal Hospital. Dean Elliott from Worcester has already had a taste of fame in London’s West End, and he’s on the road once again with a brand new musical, The Simon & Garfunkel Story.

Dean played the lead role in the musical Buddy, and performing in such a prestigious show must have been an amazing experience for somebody in their twenties. The show went abroad, on tv he appeared on the Jonathan Ross Show and was interviewed on Radio 2 but the success doesn’t seem to have gone to his head. Instead, he decided it was time to bring another great musical story to the stage. ‘I have always been a fan of Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel. Their music is exceptional but I knew that if we were going to perform it there was no room for error: we had to be one hundred percent perfect.’ After devising and scripting the show, Dean auditioned the other performers before rehearsing and booking venues. It’s a huge venture to undertake but the result is a tour that’s getting positive reviews wherever it goes, faithfully performs the music of Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel and tells their story in the context of all the social and political upheaval of the 1960s.

Their recent show at the Swan Theatre in Worcester was a sell-out and they’ve had really positive reviews including one from The Stage, which described Dean and Jonny as a very accomplished and immensely likeable duo. ‘We’re having the time of our lives’ says Dean, ‘and its lovely that we’ve had such a warm response from the audiences we’ve played to so far.’

Dean plays the part of Paul Simon while Jonny Smart is Art Garfunkel. Jonny is a fantastic performer, in fact some members of the audience have been in tears when he sings ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water’ says Dean. He gives a chuckle when he remembers why Jonny was chosen to play the part of Art Garfunkel. ’It’s not just the fact he has the voice of an angel, but also that he was prepared to perm his hair!’

The show’s website is www.thesimonandgarfunkelstory.com and you can find them on Facebook.

The show is touring around Europe until the end of April, but if you want to catch them they’ll be back in the Midlands in May, with gigs in Hereford on 16th May, Bromsgrove on 23rd, Tewkesbury on 24th and the Alex Theatre in Birmingham on 29th May.

You can hear more of Dave’s interviews with local musicians on Choice Radio at choiceradio. org.uk and clicking on Live! In the Past. Choice is the hospital radio service for the Worcestershire Royal Hospital in Worcester, a voluntary service broadcasting a wide variety of music and programmes for patients seven days a week.

Dial M for Murder When murder calls….hang up. Frederick Knott’s intense and darkly gripping thriller Dial M for Murder is being presented by Malvern Theatres from April 15th for one week only. Tony is convinced his wife is having an affair. We watch mesmerised at Tony’s precision in planning what must surely be the perfect murder… until it falters in the most unexpected way.
