Tour of Britain cycle race comes to Worcester Wednesday 10th September

Photographed by SweetSpot

Race Start: 10.30am at The Hive, Worcester city centre Expect lots of excitement outside The Hive for the start of Day Four of The Tour of Britain. 18 cycle teams have already covered hundreds of miles after starting in Liverpool and travelling through Wales to reach Worcester.

After the Worcestershire stage of the race, The Tour of Britain moves onto the West Country before heading across southern England, to finish in London on Sunday 14th September.

More information: Please check the Tour of Britain website for any last minute route changes and other details, www.tourofbritain.co.uk

6

Thousands of spectators are expected for Day Four of the event, and roads around the city will be closed during the morning. The current published route around Worcester leaves The Hive, travels up The Butts and along City Walls Road before turning onto Deansway, along New Road and through St. Johns before heading along Bransford Road to Rushwick.

Photographed by FT Images, Worcester

The build up begins outside The Hive around 9am with things to see and do. After the start at 10.30am, the riders will tour through the city before heading out to Rushwick and on to Malvern. They’ll climb the hills and travel over the Wyche Cutting, heading on to Little Malvern before descending to Upton upon Severn, onward to Pershore and Evesham before riding through Broadway where the race leaves the county.

Mark Leyland, one of the race’s organisers, says ‘As in previous years the early climb of the Malvern Hills will attract a lot of spectators, as will the city centre start, which will enable fans to see the world’s top teams and riders preparing for the stage.’

Well-Being

Backing Up Your Willpower By Tracy Reck, Personal Fitness Coach in Worcester Wouldn’t it be lovely if food cravings popped up less? Well, I have good news! They can be controlled if you have a good grasp of your trigger foods and buffer foods.

Trigger foods are foods that set off cravings, cause quick hunger and a lack of energy. Buffer foods are foods that keep you feeling full, craving free and energised. There are a few of these, but the main trigger foods are starchy carbohydrate-based foods, especially those high in refined sugar. The main buffer foods are protein and veggies. No shock there then! By keeping a lid on starchy carbs, you’re setting up your main meals to help you stay strong when temptation strikes. Which it does, several times a day.

Instead of your muscles failing, you can carry on. Instead of your willpower failing and you ending up in the sweet tin, you are running with the right ratios of protein, veg and starchy carbs to extend your strength and you reach for a snack that helps rather than one that hinders (because snacking isn’t bad, it’s just that our choice of snack really matters). Make sense? Any questions, you know where to find me. Stick with it!

There’s no getting away from all the poor food choices that surround us. But a solid breakfast, lunch and dinner that’s based on keeping the starchy carbs low and protein and veggies high helps us to stay stronger than we could on willpower alone. Willpower is exhaustible, but we can train it to be stronger. The more we practice saying no to temptation, the easier it gets. But our willpower ‘muscle’ will still get tired, and when it gets tired it’ll fail. When a real muscle fails, you might end up dropping a weight on your foot. When it’s your willpower ‘muscle’ that fails, that’s when the pizza/crisps/chocolate/wine come a-knocking. Using food in the way we do to strengthen our willpower is like a being a weightlifter who uses a spotter - having something or somebody else who stands with you, holds onto your weight alongside you and helps you to keep going when your muscles weaken.

Fight Pain with Osteopathy! When pain strikes it can affect all areas of your life. Aches in your back, neck or limbs can leave you exhausted and irritable. It may mean you cannot work, do the things you enjoy or even get a good night’s sleep. Pain-killers and anti-inflammatories may ease your symptoms but they’re only a temporary fix. We’re Osteopaths Joanna Young and Jonathan Mussen and we’re passionate about getting you moving again, pain-free and fast! We are knowledgeable, skilled and experienced in assessing and treating the causes of your pain, aiming for long-term improvement so that you can begin enjoying life again. Did you know that where you feel the pain isn’t necessarily where the problem lies? We always take a detailed medical history in order to identify any previous injuries or conditions which may be connected with your current issues. Through careful examination we look for the actual causes of your pain and then treat you to bring you gently back to health. A treatment plan will be discussed; often you will feel improvement

even after just one visit. Most people only need a few treatments to get them pain-free. That’s how effective Osteopathy is. We will also talk through with you how to avoid further bouts of pain. We may recommend exercises or give you tips and advice on how to stay healthy and active. As one happy patient put it, “I would never have thought of seeing an Osteopath but I would now recommend them to anyone in my position”. Osteopathy is highly effective and good value for money. We’re handily located near Warndon Villages and a stone’s throw from Junction 6 of the M5. Our clinic has disabled access and free parking. In this summer of sport we’re on a mission to help everyone feel fit and healthy, ready again to get back to the sport they love! So if pain is preventing you from enjoying life, come and see Joanna or Jonathan. We’ll do our best to ease your discomfort - wherever it may be. Call us today on 01905 45 45 50 to book your appointment. Osteopathy – gentle and effective - it’s a simple as that.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul Papandreou feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people

money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Malvern, Worcester & Hereford areas and Paul is finding that his approach is a major

factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people

I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

St Richard’s Hospice Write a Will Month in September Writing a Will is something many people keep putting off, always thinking there will be time to do it later. But there are lots of important reasons to make your Will and the sooner it is done, the sooner you can relax in the knowledge that everything is in order. Why it is important to make a Will: • If you die without a Will, there are certain rules which dictate how the money, property or possessions should be allocated. This may not be the way that you would have wished your money and possessions to be distributed.

Hospice. This gift can have an impact on people’s lives for years to come. Every £1 in every Will makes a difference. www.strichards.org.uk/giftsinwills

• Unmarried partners and partners who have not registered a civil partnership cannot inherit from each other unless there is a Will, so the death of one partner may create serious financial problems for the remaining partner. • If you have children, you will need to make a Will so that arrangements for the children can be made if either one or both parents die. • It may be possible to reduce the amount of tax payable on the inheritance if advice is taken in advance and a Will is made. • If your circumstances have changed, it is important that you make a Will to ensure that your money and possessions are distributed according to your wishes. For example, if you have separated and your ex-partner now lives with someone else, you may want to change your Will. If you are married or enter into a registered civil partnership, this will make any previous Will you have made invalid. A gift in your Will, however large or small, whenever the time is right for you, will help St Richard’s to continue to care. After your family and friends have been remembered, it gives you the opportunity to leave a gift to St Richard’s

Local Talent

By Dave Webber

I’m Dave Webber and I present a weekly music show on Choice Radio, the service for Worcestershire Royal Hospital. Colin Baggs is a talented guitarist who will be performing at this year’s Worcester Music Festival at the end of August.

Colin is originally from Gloucester but ended up in Worcester to study at the University. It took another few years before he started playing on the music scene around the city. He began playing at open mic sessions and admits he was a little nervous, but it was a good grounding because despite one or two fluffs, the audiences were very appreciative. The positive comments spurred him on, and these days you’ll find him playing at many popular local venues and minifestivals. Colin’s acoustic guitar sets cover a variety of styles with elements of jazz, classical guitar, folk, flamenco and even a bit of rock. He’s been compared by some people to Gordon Giltrap and Martin Taylor and says that his work has been influenced by the Australian guitarist Tommy Emmanuel and the composer and guitarist Michael Hedges. Everything Colin plays is his own composition, and he almost always performs solo. He has played with others, but prefers the challenge of writing and performing music that works with a solo instrument. After the recent birth of his son he has been busy. ‘I haven’t had any time at all to get out and play,’ he tells me, ‘although just recently I have started again, playing three gigs. At each one my playing seemed to get better and it was a pleasure to play in front of people once again.’ At one point Colin did think about singing, he went along to lessons but his teacher told him he

20

Photographed by John Taylor

Colin only started playing guitar at the age of 17, when he had a part-time job and could afford to buy an instrument. Colin reckons that in some ways it was good he started slightly later in life, because he had the drive to practise, practise, and practise some more! He taught himself, without any help, and describes it as hard work, taking many many long hours.

should stick with the guitar playing! He’s recorded some of his music in the form of an EP and has a live recording from a Festival he played at. Despite being busy, he’s working on a few new pieces at the moment and if time allows he hopes to get them completed and recorded by the end of this summer. As for the future, Colin would like to take his performances further and play at larger events, but isn’t about to abandon his audiences in and around Worcester. ‘I enjoy it and get a bit of a buzz from performing’ says Colin, ‘but it’s also good to give something to an audience, to see people’s response to my music and the way they respond to what I’ve written.’

We filmed Colin’s live session on my Choice Radio show a couple of years back, and you can see it on the Worcester Music Festival website at www.worcestermusicfestival.co.uk If you want to hear more of Colin’s music, visit www.reverbnation.com/colinbaggs

Ingredients

1. To make the meatballs squeeze the sausage meat from the Sausages into a bowl with the roughly chopped herbs and finely chopped chilli. 2. Mix well by hand and then form into a long sausage shape. Mark the divisions for 20 meatballs along the sausage shape and then using wet hands (to stop the sausagemeat sticking) form each meatball by pinching off the divided meat and rolling between palms of your hands. 3. Preheat oven 170c 4. Gather the meatballs on a plate. Heat some oil in a frying pan and carefully brown the meatballs. Lift out of the pan and onto a baking tray, bake in the oven for 20 mins.

Young Driver provides driving lessons for 11 – 17 year olds at over 30 venues across Great Britain. The local venue is Three Counties Showground, Malvern. Youngsters are taught in brand new, dual control SKODA Citigo cars by fully qualified instructors. They learn to change gear, brake, manoeuvre and even reverse park on their very first lesson! Currently one in five newly qualified drivers will crash in the first 6 months after passing their test, but research shows that for Young Driver past pupils this drops to fewer than one in ten. So teenagers get to have fun whilst also learning to become a safe driver, ready for when they take to the wheel for real. It’s a win-win! Young Driver Birthday Parties are this year’s No. 1 choice. From only £99.99 for 6 children. 30 or 60 minute gift vouchers make the perfect present for a ‘hard to buy for’ teenager. www.youngdriver.eu

Competition

Malvern Theatre News

Three Men in a Boat Following a hit, sell-out tour in 2012, Craig Gilbert’s ingenious, acclaimed adaption of Jerome K Jerome’s classic tale of boating misadventure returns to the UK stage this autumn armed with a brand new picnic basket, wilder adventures and sporting even brighter blazers. In its 125th year of publication Jerome’s ripping yarn of youthful friendship, mischief and folly, originally intended as a guide to boating on the Thames, continues to celebrate the very essence of Britishness, inspiring many of our comic legends from Morecambe and Wise to Monty Python. The producers of Birdsong, The Original Theatre Company takes this classic tale of British misadventure and folly by the scruff of the neck. Equipped with a working pub, live piano accompaniment, some ale, music hall singing, a dog and a feast of physical comedy, settle yourself in for a night out to remember.

Win two tickets to Three Men in a Boat! Following the overwhelming success of Three Men in a Boat, Jerome K Jermome later published a sequel, about a cycling tour in Germany. Was the title; A) Three Men on the Bummel B) Three Men on a Road Trip C) Three Men on a Bike Email the answer plus your name, postcode and phone number to competition@allabout-local.com by Tuesday 16 September 2014. The winners will be drawn from the entries and notified by Wednesday 17 September. Good luck!

All About...

Link Nurseries Link Nurseries on the outskirts of Worcester provides horticultural occupational therapy for adults recovering from serious mental illness. Judith Aldridge is Secretary of a Friends Group which supports the Nurseries’ work. There are around 70 supporters and Judith tells us more about what they do.

Can you tell us about the work of Link Nurseries? Link Nurseries is part of the NHS and has been in existence for over 20 years. At their quiet site at Powick, qualified staff provide a calm, caring atmosphere and personalised support for up to fifteen people a day who have been referred there by mental health services. Attendance is flexible and all receive care and horticultural training to suit their needs and abilities. A wide variety of plants is grown - bedding, annuals, vegetable plants, perennials and alpines. These plants and fresh seasonal produce are sold to their loyal and discerning local supporters when the Nurseries are open to the public Monday to Friday 9.30am to 3.30pm. Link Nurseries has a proven track record of speeding the recovery of the hundreds of people who have benefitted from their care over the years.

How do The Friends support the work of the Nurseries? About three years ago, local supporters and customers of the Nurseries felt we could give more constructive help by establishing a more formal Friends group. We provide practical assistance and raise funds - for example, last year the Friends bought professional plant labelling software and equipment. We actively publicise their tremendous work by going to local fetes and shows, selling plants and distributing information. On the second Friday of each month we have a fund-raising coffee morning at the Nurseries, with very good home-made cake donated by our supporters and usually a free talk or demonstration on some aspect of gardening. On September 12th there will be a talk on growing tomatoes by our resident expert who this year has grown 25 different varieties of tasty tomato.

30

And you have an event coming up in October? Each year we do something to mark World Mental Health Week. This year, on Saturday 4th October, the Friends are holding an event at Powick Parish Hall from 11am to 4pm. The theme is ‘Mental Wellbeing through Horticulture and Gardening’. Entry is free. As well as a giant plant sale, there will be talks and gardening advice from experts from around the county, a gardening tombola and even a manicurist to rescue those gardening hands! There will be people to talk about the Nurseries’ work and where to get help if needed.

Does the Nurseries make a real difference to people’s lives? Definitely. In their own words: ‘Link gives you back your true potential when you can least see it. Link can make your personal mountain seem like a molehill. When you are up against things, Link is your prop. Link Nurseries grows people, the plants are a bonus.’

For more information about the Nurseries or the Friends please get in touch. For the Nurseries: Jane Smart, the Manager at jane.smart1@nhs.net, 01905 831881. For the Friends, Judith at westendhouse@ btinternet.com . We hold an open meeting at the Nurseries the second Tuesday of every month between 4pm and 6pm, when you can find out more and everyone is welcome.
