Summer’s supposed to be about relaxing, but so far I’ve had a busy time! Putting this magazine together is a lot of work, and for that reason I’ve decided to give you two months for the price of one; this edition covers both August & September. Its a real ‘summer special’ with all sorts of ideas for days out and activities. Don’t forget to keep the magazine handy as we also have the details of many local business and tradespeople locally. And if you want up-to-date information between now and September, take a look at our website which is regularly updated. The address is www. allabout-local.com. Have a lovely summer and we’ll be back with a monthly edition again in October.

Combined Elaine Bentley and Wendy Ruddick are looking forward to their latest exhibition later this month. Part of a collective of artists, they’ll be taking over Weavers Gallery in Ledbury to display their work. Its part of Herefordshire Art Week, also known as h.Art, when galleries across the county throw open their doors to allow people in to see what they do. Wendy from Colwall is a founder member of Artistree, the collective that today has twenty artists as its members.’Back in 1998 we were about creating a forum for expression and promoting the interests of the artists. We also created a ‘window to the world’ for creative people living in this area’. Elaine, who lives in West Malvern, joined at the start. Today her creativity is as strong as ever, making art using traditional methods and with digital media. ‘The energy generated by Artistree is good for everybody’ she says, ‘providing the shared goal of each exhibition, the benefit of helpful colleagues and of a group identity . We offer each other support, so much of an artists’ work is carried out in isolation’. In the early days Artistree leased a building in Ledbury, which today houses the gallery where they’ll be exhibiting later this month. Originally they held events around the time of the Ledbury Poetry Festival. The group includes painters, printers, photographers

and film makers, textile artists and sculptors. They describe themselves as ‘inclusive’ but certain professional standards of work are required in order to become a member. The exhibition is the culmination of a year’s work which is more than creating art. ‘We have a meeting at which our chair Cheryl Kirby does an excellent job of dividing up the work. Somebody does the books, another organises the event, people volunteer to steward as well as help with hanging and displaying the work’ says Wendy. ‘During the exhibition itself we try to have somebody in the gallery who can answer questions about the work’. Sometimes the artists will bring their work into the gallery to continue during the exhibition and so if you’re lucky, your visit will coincide with being able to watch an artist painting or creating another work of art. ‘We particularly enjoy h.Art week, its a real social occasion when we have the opportunity to see other artists and meet up with them. We also support this initiative because it helps carry art into a public arena’.
The exhibition of work by members of Artistree can be seen at Weavers Gallery in Ledbury, daily between 5th and 18th September. take a look at www.artistree.org.uk h.Art FACTBOX • Herefordshire Art Week is an annual showcase aimed at promoting the large number and wide variety of artists and craftmakers working in the region. • h.Art's core aim is to support the county's artists and makers and promote them both within the local community and to visitors from the region and across the UK with the specific intention of increasing sales of work. • h.Art took place for the first time in September 2002 and each year sees thousands of people visiting attractions. • A local map is available for our area, published online for you to download: visit www.allaboutlocal.com for up to date information and where to visit these and other local artists in the area.

Rejuvenate with Raw food!
There are no short-cuts to health and happiness, other than a complete gastrointestinal purification programme of juices, volcanic ash and water for five days, or is there? One of my most memorable meals was not in a gourmet restaurant but on a yoga retreat. I was brought a bowl of gazpacho, a Spanish raw vegetable soup, burgers made with raw carrot and lentils, and a raw chocolate pie. It was my first encounter with a 100% raw meal, delicious and bursting with vitality.
of protein in the whole vegetable kingdom Like all vegetable matter, sprouts are best eaten raw. This particularly applies to the seeds, as opposed to the beans. Cooking will destroy some of the enzymes, but a lightly cooked sprouted bean is still very valuable nutritionally. Regularly eating sprouts can have a dramatic effect on your general health and wellbeing. Research has shown that sprouts can improve and maintain the immune system, combat common colds and flu, improve your digestion and increase vitality. There are plenty of other health benefits to raw food. Chewing raw food is an excellent workout for your gums and jaw because it is slightly harder to chew than cooked food.
What are raw foods?
Seeds such as alfalfa and broccoli are great in salads and sandwiches, added to cottage cheese and yoghurt. Most people are happy to start the day with a smoothie but why not try a carrot, apple and ginger juice which is great for the digestion and immune system. For lunch why not try a paté made with seeds and pulses or serve fruit salad as a starter. Its often not realised that fruit is best eaten on an empty stomach. Try jazzing it up with chopped avocado, exotic fruits, or even a little chilli. If you’re not accustomed to eating raw foods, try adding a little at a time, with the eventual aim of having at least 50% of your diet composed of raw food. The Living Food company based in St Ives in Cornwall supply sprouting equipment, seeds and that delicious raw chocolate pie. Their website is an excellent start to learn more about raw food and also contains recipes (www.livingfoods.co.uk).
A raw food diet is considered by some to be the secret key to longevity. It has the potential to detoxify the body, reverse the degenerative process and provide us with boundless energy. Raw foods contain an abundance of vitamins, minerals, fibre, anticarcinogens and enzymes. The concept of a raw-food diet may be interesting to some simply because it promotes eating healthy, fresh, unprocessed foods. A raw-vegan diet consists of eating foods in their most natural, uncooked and unprocessed state. It is based on a diet mainly of fresh fruits, nuts, vegetables, seeds, sprouted legumes and grains, and dehydrated breads and crackers that have not been heated above 40 C. Raw Foods advocates believe that the ‘life force’ or energy is destroyed through cooking. Overcooking certain foods destroys some nutrients, especially water-soluble vitamins. The benefits of vitamins and minerals are well documented, but not so with enzymes, yet they are so vital. A diet rich in raw vegetables, particularly young sprouts, could help rejuvenate the body! Sprouted seeds, pulses and baby plants form the basis of a raw food diet.
How to sneak more raw food into the diet
Why are Raw foods so good for you?
Sprouted seeds are a storehouse of vitamins, minerals, enzymes, fatty acids and the largest source

Keeping a check on your credit, debit and store card spending is now a lot easier using Cardspend record cards. Simply fill in the amount you spend, when and where you spend it. Fitting snugly behind each of the plastic cards in your purse or wallet they show you how much you’ve spent plus a running total. You now have a written record of what you spend as you shop.
The only card you need to keep your spending on track
It’s quick and easy, will help you stay on track and hopefully stop you being overdrawn. Cardspend cards are particularly useful if you have a set income and need to keep a close check on what you spend. They’re also brilliant, if like me, you have a poor memory. Young, or more mature, they really do let you see the state of your finances at a glance. Take a few seconds to write down on these cards when and what you spend your money on and being overdrawn should become a thing of the past or at least something that happens a lot less often! No more going overdrawn as you can keep a running total of your spending and check it against your statement at the end of the month. You can use the cards either when out and about on the high street or for shopping online. Ring 07818 487548 for more information.
An up to date written record of your spending on your plastic bank & store cards 1 Easy to use 2 Fits behind the cards in your purse/wallet 3 Check it against your bank statement each month 4 Only costs £4 for 10 cards

All About... ...Suzuki Summer School Students of the recorder and flute will be gathering for a special concert on 4th August to raise money for families in Japan who were affected by the earthquake and tsunami. Its organised by Nicola Shortand, a Suzuki flute teacher who has studios in Colwall and Cheltenham.
Tell us about the concert and who will be performing
I organise the International Suzuki Flute & Recorder Summer School and this year we have moved to Malvern because of the great venue of Malvern St James. The course of lessons, concerts and having fun starts on Monday 1st and on Thursday 4th August we would like to share the achievements of the students with the general public. This year we have flute and recorder students from Holland and across the UK, aged between four and sixteen. The young musicians will perform music from the Suzuki repertoire from memory. The programme of music will be decided on the course itself.
Suzuki students develop a love for music that will be with them for the rest of their lives. They have opportunities to perform at world famous venues, play at workshops across the world and they make new friends wherever they are.
The concert takes place on Thursday 4th August, 7.30pm in the York Hall at Malvern St. James school. Entry is free, there will be a retiring collection in aid of families affected by the earthquake and tsunami. There is some more information at http:// UKSuzukiSummerSchool.blogspot.com
Why did you choose to help people affected by the Japan earthquake and tsunami?
Many Suzuki families were affected by the Earthquake and Tsunami in Japan in March. Luckily very few lost family members as they were away from their homes, at school and work, at the time. But their homes and instruments were destroyed. In a time of crisis like this music replenishes the soul, so we have decided that the money donated at our concert will buy children in Japan new instruments. The British Suzuki Institute is helping co-ordinate this relief effort.
What is the Suzuki method and how does it help with learning a musical instrument?
Dr Shinichi Suzuki observed the way every child develops an awesome ability to speak their mother tongue. He applied this method to his violin teaching. Students start lessons at a young age and the focus is on beautiful tone and music, music reading begins soon after but away from the instrument.

Looking Forward Helen Stace, who sits on the Board of Malvern Hills Conservators, wants your views on how the hills are managed. The Malvern Hills Conservators are the oldest conservation body in England, with a history going back 127 years to Acts of Parliament originally passed to stop encroachments on the hills. These Acts define the responsibilities of the Conservators in rather arcane language which we have to translate into modern working practises for managing the Malvern hills. We’ve seen a lot of change since 1884, with fewer commoners grazing the hills, the rise in visitors and new forms of recreational use, such as mountain biking and hang gliding. We also have new legal responsibilities to protect wildlife and ancient monuments. We are approaching the election of a new Board of Conservators in the autumn, so we feel the time is right to start reviewing our Forward Strategy (which establishes key management principles) and our Management Plan (which translates this into objectives specific areas). We started this process with an Open Day in Malvern on 2nd July. So, I would very much welcome your views on the management of the hills and commons. Here are some questions to get you thinking about the issues we need to address: • Do you still support the proposal to reverse the spread of sycamore and other trees on the hill slopes and ridges through scrub control and grazing (do you want open grass with skylarks, meadow pipit and butterflies or woodland along the ridge?) • Are you happy with the management regime on the lower commons, where we maintain a mix of short ‘urban grassland’, pasture and hay meadows (do you
By Helen Stace
want to see flowers, such as scabious and orchids, bloom and set seed, or would you prefer to be able to walk across the commons without getting your feet wet?) • How do you think the woodlands should be managed? (should we coppice the woodlands for butterflies and bluebells or manage them to maximise income from timber?) • What should our policy be regarding the lime trees dying of fungal attack – replace them with more limes or replant a new sort of tree? (do you love the limes for their stature and scent or regard them as a sticky nuisance?) • What do you think of dogs on the hills? (should we provide more dog bins to reduce fouling, or will this make matters worse?) • How should we manage all the different forms of recreation on the hills (should we allow more signs to direct people on different routes? Would signs actually deter mountain bikers from using footpaths? Should we be more proactive in stopping horses using footpaths, or continue to repair the damage they do e.g. on the Purlieu?) Views please - preferably by email, to Helen.Stace@colwall.info

Green Fingers Bridget’s back from a holiday that’s inspired her to grow more alpines. A few weeks ago I travelled with a friend by train from Colwall to a small village high up in the Swiss Alps called Wengen. The main object of the trip was to fulfil my dream of seeing Alpine meadow flowers in their natural habitat. We started off from St. Pancras station in London at 5.30am on a Eurostar train to Paris. After that we travelled on a TGV high-speed train through France to Basel on the Swiss/French Border. From Basel we travelled to Bern and by now we could see the high mountains in the distance. From Bern we made our way through hills and valleys into the Bernese Oberland and onwards to Interlaken. The train journey along the vast lakes and up into the Laterbrunenen valley was truly breathtaking. The steep sided glacial valleys towered 1300m above us with waterfalls and mountain rivers filling the warm air with a fine mist. We wound our way up to Wengen on a little cog railway, now another 1000 metres above the Lauterbrunnen valley and with our first view of the magnificent snow capped Jungfrau mountain. After our arrival, it was time to put on the walking boots and explore! The flowers changed as we gained altitude,
to start with the lower slopes were full of thousands of vibrant colours. Flowers such as wild Azaleas, Helianthemum, Astrantia, Aconite, Anemone, Scabious and Aster create a carpet of yellows, reds and blues. This colourful palette is dotted with the delicate white lily flowers of Paradisia Liliastrum. As we walked alongside banks of stony glacial moraines at the foot of the Eiger, the true Alpines clung to the scree slopes, nestling in crevices. Gentians as blue as the sky, saxifragas with masses of tiny white flowers, Gypsophilla, Dryas, Anemones and thousands more survive in this hostile landscape which is covered in snow for seven months of the year. Every evening we collapsed with our heads full of flowers and watched the thunderstorms from our balcony. With a bottle of beer and some swiss chocolate as accompaniment, it was like being in heaven! Now I’m back at the nursery in Colwall with a renewed enthusiasm for growing more Alpine plants. Perhaps one of the benefits will be the fact they will definitely survive the cold winters. Watch this space!
