Advice
To transfer or not to transfer, that's the question By Independent Financial Advisor Rob Weale from Colwall eports suggest over 210,000 people will transfer their final salary pensions this year compared with some 80,000 in the tax year 2016/17. The big question is, should you join them and jump on this very complex band wagon?
r
The truthful answer is……maybe! The decision very much comes down to your own personal set of circumstances. A broad-brush answer of yes or no just doesn’t cut it, it needs careful consideration, looking at the pros and cons, taking into account numerous personal hopes, fears and requirements. Only then can the question begin to be answered. Final Salary Pensions As the name suggests, these ‘gold plated’ schemes are linked to you salary and years in the scheme and have often been heavily subsidised by the employer to ensure they will pay the guaranteed income when your reach the stated retirement age, usually 60 or 65. They usually provide a spouses benefit of 50% should the member pre-decease their spouse, for the rest of their life. There are other lucrative benefits like a tax free lump sum at outset and indexation, however the key word with a final salary pension is ‘guarantee’, they provide a guaranteed income in retirement. Why the transfer conundrum? The reason there is such an increase in those transferring away from these very lucrative pension schemes is twofold. One reason is that the incomes they provide are linked to Gilt rates which in turn are influenced by the Bank of England’s interest rate, which is currently at a historic low of just 0.25%. This leads to substantial transfer cash values which can seem very tempting and have probably been further incentivised by the employer to tempt you to move away, thus removing the liability from their books.
6
The other reason, and a very important one, is pension freedom. This now allows for these funds, once transferred away, to be accessed earlier. You have the freedom to draw down income or lump sums to suit yourself, give tax free income to your spouse, and probably most important of all, allow you to leave the fund to your children, grandchildren or whomever else you elect, in a tax efficient manner. The important factor to consider, and one which should be at the forefront of your mind is whether you are happy to lose the all-important income guarantees and take on the responsibility of investment returns and capital depletion but giving the freedoms mentioned above. The way forward At Smith Weale Associates we will first investigate your circumstances, then if we feel and agree there is merit in further investigation, employ a ‘pension transfer specialist’ to carry out a full analysis, ensuring the whole process is at arm’s length resulting in completely unbiased advice. Only then can you really answer the opening question.
Rob Weale is a founding partner at Smith Weale Associates. We welcome your enquiry, all initial meetings are at our expense and without obligation. Smith Weale Associates will put you in an informed position to make an informed decision.

LEDBURY SWIMMING POOL Swimming Lessons are now back at Ledbury Swimming Pool and Halo are taking bookings for children aged 3 years and older. Learning to swim could save your child’s life - drowning is still one of the most common causes of accidental death in children. Regular swimming also keeps their heart and lungs healthy, improves strength and flexibility, increases stamina and even improves balance and posture. Halo has recently made improvements to the swimming lessons by introducing platforms to allow smaller children who might struggle to touch the pool floor. They have also split the Stage 1 group into two stages which allows children to progress more easily and attain badges more quickly. To book your child’s free swimming assessment or to find out more, look at the Activities section at haloleisure.org.uk or call Halo on (01531) 632890

NestFest – Sat 19th August 10am - 8pm This is the third time this mini festival has taken place and its popularity continues to grow. ‘I like to think of it as an overgrown village fete!’ says Neil Chambers who runs the Nest. Part of the idea is to create an opportunity to meet local food and drink producers in person, enjoy sampling their wares and enjoy lots of entertainment through the day. There will be plenty of artisan food stalls to browse as well as local beer, cider and wine to enjoy. There’s live music, animal encounters, children’s entertainment and ‘have a go’ archery as well. New Venue & Wedding Fair - Sunday 30th July 10am - 5pm As a small independent venue, this will be a wedding fair with a difference. The day will focus on what the organisers believe couples who choose a Herefordshire wedding are truly looking for.

Well Being
doing nothing Mid-summer. The days are imperceptibly shortening. The red-flame petals of the monbretia have unfurled and in our garden pond the tadpoles are being eaten by a newt. Goldfinches have started visiting our birdfeeder and after days of sunshine there is a night of rain and the garden is watered much more effectively than I could do with a hose or watering can. So much of the natural world unfolds without us having to do very much at all: the sun comes up each morning, and sinks over the horizon at night; the moon waxes and wanes; the grass keeps growing, leaves and petals unfurl, fruits form and eventually fall to the ground where they are eaten. Every now and again we need to do a little here and there to keep things ticking over: deadheading a rose, putting some more compost on the veg patch, pulling up a few weeds here and there. We breathe without noticing most of the time, our heart beats without us thinking about it, our guts go on doing their thing.
nothing can already be helping. I relaxed into the moment. My mind quietened, those two parts of me stopped trying to get me to act and I caught the eye of a friend and smiled. They relaxed a little too. The situation around us settled down and the child cheered up. On other days we’d have all gone around that cycle of trying to fix things and probably made things worse. Introducing some stillness can be transformative. How to practise doing nothing • Make regular time to be still: sit in the garden or in a chair by the window and watch the world go by
At the same time our default reactions to the world and other people are often born of selfprotectiveness. Human nature is mixed. We shy away from some things, are drawn towards others, and see what we would like to see instead of what’s there.
• Take real breaks: instead of checking your phone (or your usual go to distraction) do nothing at all for a moment or two
Doing nothing is often a wise choice. How much do we really need to add to what is already happening?
• Listen to the birds
Being still allows us to get close to what is happening. Being still allows us to tune into how things are already unfolding. Acting from stillness and from being close to what is happening allows us to act wisely, if we need to act at all. Sometimes just being still is already helping. One summer day I was out walking with a few friends and their families. One of the children with us was tired and grumpy and started acting out. Various adults got involved. Cajoling, telling off, promising rewards for good behaviour and so on. I could feel myself pulled in two different directions. Part of me wanted to just walk away, and part of me wanted to get involved myself. And then I remembered that being still and doing

the ely memorial fund Life was going well for 23 year old Emma Young. She had a loving family around her and had only recently started her dream job when tragedy struck. On the evening of 30th September 2010 she was returning from a visit to her boyfriend when her car left the road near the Verzons Hotel, on the Ledbury to Hereford road. The crash took her life. Despite their grief, her family set up a charity to help others affected by the loss of a son or daughter in a road traffic accident. Here, Emma’s mum Angela tells us more. mma would regularly visit her boyfriend in Ledbury and on the night of the accident, she wasn’t home at the normal time. At 11.40pm that night there was a knock at the door. I glanced through the curtains, saw two police officers standing there and instinctively knew something was badly wrong.
E
Just before Emma’s accident, everything was wonderful in our lives. She’d found a job that she’d wanted for such a long time, we were all happy and all of a sudden it was as if someone threw a grenade into our lives. That’s the only way to describe it – our lives were obliterated.
We’ve helped four families since we started and today we are in a position to offer up to £3,000 towards the costs of a young person’s funeral.
I can remember the first 24 hours after her death. There was the police, newspapers and radio, friends turning up out of the blue, it was overwhelming. Suddenly you find yourself planning your daughter’s funeral. The undertakers arrived and I was just thinking ‘What’s this woman doing here?’ It was unreal.
I also work in partnership with Hereford & Worcester Fire & Rescue Service, giving talks to young people about the importance of staying safe on the road. It’s impossible to say what impact our road safety campaigning might have had, but the number of young people killed on Herefordshire’s roads decreased last year. I really hope that in the future we have a new generation of young drivers who stay safe.
We didn’t have initial outlay of £5,000 for the funeral. Three weeks later we received the bill and thought ‘how are we going to pay that?’ Even though the undertakers were brilliant, they still had their costs to cover. Not having the money was devastating and we were only saved by my mum who stepped in.
The impact of losing Emma so suddenly and horrifically will never leave me. We’ve never had answers about what might have caused her to come off the road that night. I will always wonder what happened, which does not give me closure for my only beautiful daughter who was taken far too soon from me and her family.
This is why we set up The ELY (Emma Louise Young) Memorial Fund thanks to the hard work of Emma’s cousin Kiera. She was only 18 at the time and had the idea of helping other families to pay basic funeral costs of young people who lose their lives on the roads of Herefordshire. We have a continual programme of fundraising and need to hold a reserve as you never know when a newly grieving family might need the
28
Charity’s help. We are not for profit and hold various fundraising events throughout the year by holding our yearly events, along with other activities such as quizzes, supermarket bag-packs, supporters’ fundraising activities. In May 2016 the Hereford Mayor Jim Kenyon chose ELY as one of his charities. We received £4,000 from the Mayor who really helped to increase our charity’s profile.

All About...
ledbury carnival Ledbury Carnival is one of the town’s most popular annual events. There’s entertainment in the town centre with the carnival procession as one of its many highlights. This year it takes place on Bank Holiday Monday 28th August. Hilary Jones who chairs the organising committee tells us more.
What’s the theme this year? We had a ‘novel’ idea and have taken books as this year’s theme! With everything from Shakespeare to Sci-fi, Dickens to Dahl, there is plenty for groups to base their displays around. People are very creative and it never ceases to amaze us what they manage to come up with. All sorts of groups take part, including Ledbury Children’s Centre and the local Rotary Club. Decorated trailers form part of the procession as well as walking groups. It’s very colourful. Things get underway in the town centre at around 11am. The procession leaves the Rugby Club at Midday and makes its way into town where there will be music through the afternoon with the Sequins, Ledbury Community Brass Band, and Nice n Sleazy, a rock covers band. There’s also a shop window decorating competition taking place.
Why is it the carnival so popular? We have up to 10,000 people attending, with many coming from beyond Ledbury. It’s a fun day out and the entertainment is free. As well as the procession, there are stalls to browse and we
have a wonderful horticultural show taking place at the same time. The event is confined to the town centre so it has a real buzz. We have decades of organising experience behind us which helps. There is a small but committed group of us on the committee who are all volunteers and we work as a team. It takes a lot of effort but we follow a wellestablished formula to make it work. Sponsorship and collections on the day help to fund it properly and we work all year to make it happen.
What’s the highlight for you? It’s the buzz of the event on the day and seeing everybody enjoy themselves. Come rain or shine, the carnival takes place! I love being part of that, coming into town and seeing the crowds and then the procession passing through. There’s always lots of familiar faces and its especially nice to see so many people, both young and old having a great time.

Gardening
green fingers Down at Caves Folly Nursery in Colwall, Bridget has some ideas to bring the sweet smells of summer into your garden. We have enjoyed variable weather this summer so far with some extremely hot spells. The heat has made all the South African plants I grow very happy and has also stimulated the scented plants. Roses, Elderflower, Honeysuckle and Lime trees have been filling the air with the most heavenly scents. We have a climbing Kiftsgate rose, which is about 25 years old, climbing up to sixty feet into our old oak tree. The white flowers have spilled over the branches and the scent has been sensational. It has made my commute down the track to work a sheer joy! As well as creating a delightful sensation for us, flowers produce chemicals in their bloom which provides fragrance necessary for their survival. Alluring to pollinators and turning away predators, plants use specific chemistry in mixing essences to further their existence. Here are a few scented plants for the garden: Spring - Daphne, Viburnum, Mahonia, Deciduous azaleas, Viola odorata, Lily of the valley, Osmanthus. Summer - Sweet peas, Lavender, Roses, Elderflower, Philadelphus
• Lightly trim Hebes and lavenders after flowering • Take cuttings of half-hardy plants such as salvia, Penstemons, erysimums • Keep dead heading and feeding summer bedding plants and they will give good displays up until the frost. • Collect seeds and store. • September and October are ideal times to plant shrubs and perennials as the soil is still warm and the roots will establish before the cold weather. Kitchen garden • Tie in new canes of raspberries and blackberries • Transplant summer sown kale, broccoli and cabbage. • Sow fast growing ‘catch’ crops for autumn such as lettuce, radish, rocket, turnips and oriental vegetables. • Leave Marrows, Pumpkins and Squash to ripen on the plant but harvest before the frost. • Now is the time to plan new planting schemes and think about any changes to your garden that can be carried out in the winter months.
Autumn and Winter - Lonicera fragrantissima. Hamamelis, Chimonanthus, praecox. Summer is a time to enjoy the flower garden and the produce from the veg. plot. Don’t forget to freeze and store all those lovely veg! Jobs in the garden
• Clear away fallen diseased leaves with black spot from around roses.
• Take photos of borders now to remind you what is there when everything dies down. Enjoy the rest of the summer with some relaxation in the garden, you deserve it!

Local Walk
brief history of transport Walk in ledbury By Carl Flint This circular walk features a disused canal, a dismantled railway, a current railway station, stunning town views and the old drovers’ route to Malvern and Worcester. The walk will take approximately one hour without stops. Walking boots are not necessary. It is buggy friendly except the climb, over the only stile on the walk near Ledbury Railway station. This walk starts in Bye Street just a stone’s throw from the town centre. So if arriving by car it is probably best to park in St Katherine’s car park which is the main town centre pay and display car park next to St Katherine’s Hospital and the Master’s House.
Even when visiting or driving through Ledbury, you might not have noticed the details this walk will point out to you. Enjoy seeing the town from a transport point of view!
To download the full details of the walk, please visit our website allaboutmalvernhills.com and choose Walking on the Malvern Hills & in Malvern under the ‘Local Life’ tab.

how the other half loves One secret love affair. Two disaster-bound dinner parties. Three couples headed for trouble. Direct from a highly celebrated extended season in London’s West End, Bill Kenwright’s production of Alan Ayckbourn’s farcical tale of matrimonial mishaps, How the Other Half Loves is coming to Malvern Theatres. As Bob and Fiona clumsily try to cover up their affair, their spouses’ intervention only adds to the confusion. William and Mary Featherstone become stuck in the middle, falsely accused of adultery and with no idea as to how they’ve become involved. The plot culminates in two disastrous dinner parties on successive nights, shown at the same time, after which the futures of all three couples seem in jeopardy… The star cast includes leading stage and TV actor ROBERT DAWS, best known for the hit series’ The Royal, Outside Edge and Roger Roger, opposite CAROLINE LANGRISHE (Lovejoy, Holby City, Judge John Deed). CHARLIE BROOKS, much-loved for her portrayal of EastEnders’ Janine Butcher with LEON OCKENDEN, (Coronation Street). Completing the couples are MATTHEW COTTLE who reprises his critically acclaimed West End role alongside SARA CROWE whose West End credits include Ayckbourn’s Absurd Person Singular and The Constant Wife, but is perhaps best known for her role in the popular film Four Weddings and a Funeral. Tickets are on sale now at the Box Office 01684 892277 and online at malvern-theatres.co.uk
