Editor’s message
Christmas time! Even though there have already been festive adverts on television for several weeks, we decided to wait until December before talking about Christmas! Now that it’s getting closer, there is lots to look forward to. From Colwall’s annual mistletoe fair, to local recipes, places to visit, musical evenings and beautiful gifts from local shops, there is lots to look forward to and enjoy. If you’re looking for something new to start in January, there are lots of ideas for classes and courses towards the back of the magazine, so do take a look. Of course the fact you’re reading the magazine is thanks to a large team of deliverers who make the effort to put it through your door, whatever the weather. On behalf of All About Magazines, here’s a big thank you to them! From all of us: have a great Christmas and a good start to 2015.

Advice
Investing… Where to turn with all this volatility? By Independent Financial Advisor Rob Weale from Colwall These past few weeks have been a particularly testing time. Global growth is slowing, oil prices dropping, inflation falling, political unrest in Ukraine, Syria, the Middle East and until very recently closer to home in Scotland, and to top it off, an investigation at Tesco! So with all this uncertainty, never has it been more important to ensure the correct strategy is applied to your investments. Whether it is your rainy-day ISA, income-producing investment holding, or your critical retirement plan, diversification and risk management are crucial. Asset Choice The single best way to protect your portfolio is to spread your risk across several different types of investments. There are many different assets in which you can invest, each with different risk characteristics. While the risks attributable to assets cannot be avoided, when managed collectively as part of a diversified portfolio, they can be diluted. Company specific risk Next, one of the best things you can do is to diversify within the assets. For example, you can spread your investments into different shares or bonds to ensure your portfolio is exposed to lots of different types of investments rather than, for example, having shares in just a few large companies. In this way share-specific risk can be reduced should one of those companies experience difficulties. Sector exposure It is just as important to spread your investments across different sectors. A sector is a grouping of funds with a similar investment objective and make up. For many reasons, companies within different sectors perform in very different ways. By diversifying across sectors you can access shares with high growth expectations, without overexposing your portfolio as a whole to undue risk. Geographical Location It’s natural to feel more comfortable investing in your home market, but this is not necessarily the most sensible option. Because investments

in different geographical economies generally operate in different economic cycles, they have less than perfect correlation. Investment funds Keeping track of lots of individual assets can be a daunting task. A much simpler solution is to buy investment funds containing those assets and leave the diversification worries to professional management where one can easily spread investments across hundreds of different assets. Risk profiling Some financial advisers are still guilty in a somewhat broad-brushed manner, of categorising their clients using three basic levels: ‘cautious’, ‘balanced’ or ‘aggressive’. However there are now many sophisticated risk profile questionnaires and online tools available to help financial advisers measure your appetite for risk more precisely, and even your tolerance for loss. The more accurate your risk profile, the greater the chance of recommending the most suitable investments for your needs. Summary At Smith Weale Associates we are a great believer in diversification at every stage of the investment process, risk rating clients, risk rating assets and risk rating funds, to the extent that where appropriate we will recommend a fund of funds as another layer of diversification. If you have not explored true diversification before, might I suggest you do it now and ensure you are prepared for whatever the future holds.
before making an investment decision – Smith Weale Associates can help you with this. We welcome your enquiry.

Colwall feature
Colwall Mistletoe Fair Giving traditional orchards the kiss of life! Colwall Orchard Group will be holding its traditional Mistletoe Fair outside Colwall Park Hotel on Saturday 13th December from 9.30am.
‘We harvest mistletoe sustainably as part of our winter tree rescue programme around the village orchards, which is then tied into decorated bunches for sale’ says Helen Stace from the group. ‘This is a major element of our fund raising efforts through the year.’ Tim Dixon, Chair of the Group said ‘We know people can easily scrump mistletoe around here, so we are always really touched to find that people buy our mistletoe to support all our work in the orchards.’ As well as the mistletoe there will be apple juice and preserves for sale as well as a range of other seasonal goodies, including lovely gift bags – the ideal presents for the ‘hard-to-buy-for’ friends and relatives. The morning will be topped off with servings of mulled cider and mince pies
Mistletoe Facts 1. Mistletoe is hemi-parasitic - it is green, so can make its own food, but it relies on the host tree for water and minerals. 2. It grows predominantly in the south-west Midlands and Severn Vales, on a range of trees, but especially apples. 3. Mistletoe has separate male and female plants – only the female clumps have berries. The plants flower in February. 4. Mistletoe takes a very long time to grow. In the first year it puts out 2 suckers which fasten onto the bark, and then it takes several years for the plant to get well enough established to send out its first proper leaves. 5. Once it is established, every branch divides into 2 each year, so it can grow big very quickly. You can age a clump of mistletoe by counting the number of times the branches divide. 6. If the tree dies, the mistletoe only survives for about 3 weeks.
10
7. Mistletoe seeds are one of the few seeds that make their own food through photosynthesis. 8. The mistletoe relies on birds to spread its seeds, either by wiping the sticky berries off their beaks onto a twig, or through their droppings. 9. Some mistletoe harvesters only harvest plants with berries, so the male clumps are left to grow unchecked, eventually overwhelming the tree. 10. Colwall Orchard Group takes mistletoe as part of its tree rescue programme, cutting out carefully selected male and female plants to rebalance the trees. 11. Mistletoe has considerable wildlife value – Mistlethrushes, blackcaps and other birds feed on the berries and there are several insects unique to mistletoe. One, the rare Mistletoe Marble Moth, has been found in several orchards in our village. 12. Mistletoe also has significant heritage value, in its association with centuries old local traditions and beliefs.

the nest Ledbury Neil Chambers was a talented artist before his passion for quality food steered him towards a successful career in the food business. Together with his wife Penny they’ve opened the nest, a deli, shop and café near Ledbury described as a place to eat, unwind & recharge. ‘To open a place like this was always our greatest aspiration’ says Neil, sitting in a corner of the light and airy café. The imaginatively furnished space is a relaxing space to stop and enjoy a drink or a light meal, with a fully kitted out children’s corner to give parents a break. Twelve years ago Penny and Neil began creating and selling handmade scotch eggs at local farmer’s markets. Today they sell their produce to hundreds of outlets and their ability to create top quality food is evident at the the nest. The menu offers light meals made as far as possible with locally-sourced produce, something Neil is passionate about. ‘The food we sell is from people we know. Knowing who made the food and where it comes from allows us to offer fresh, top quality artisan meals.’
14
A quick look at the menu reveals the distance from producer to plate; 6 miles for Peter Cook’s tea cakes, 3 miles for one of Angela’s Sponge cakes, or 6 miles for a Handmade Scotch Egg (all the way from Bishops Frome!). The menu also boasts the Herefordshire APP, or ‘Apple Picker’s Picnic’, described as a local alternative to a ploughman’s lunch, it’s a quartered scotch egg served with salad and chutney. As well as the café there is plenty of produce to buy and take away with you, from local cheeses to drinks, fresh bread, milk, bacon, eggs and butter. The veg on sale is grown next door and at £1 a bag offers excellent value for money. There are also greetings cards and other gifts, again provided as far as possible by local artists and craftsmen. ‘For Christmas we’ll be offering more local, seasonal produce so do pop in and find out what’s available’ says Neil. the nest is situated 3 miles west of Ledbury on the A438 towards Hereford and is open seven days a week. Art showcase
Disigned for Christmas The work of six talented artists and craftspeople comes together in Ledbury in December. Designed for Christmas showcases woven bead jewellery, pottery, wirework and textile art, lamps, shades and willow weaving. There will also be batik art created by Marie Thérèse King. Based in a bright and airy workshop in Colwall, Marie-Thérèse is busy preparing a large batik design. ‘Trying to explain the process of creating batik is complicated!’ she laughs, as she uses hot wax to draw designs onto cotton which is stretched across a wooden frame. Layers of colour are built up onto the cotton, protected by successive layers of wax. Eventually a striking and complex picture is created. ‘I’ve worked in many different media’ says Marie-Thérèse, ‘but I have settled on batik because it’s both challenging and exciting.’ Much of her work is inspired by the British, birds, flowers and butterflies - hanging on the walls of the workshop are bright, detailed images of birds in flight and flowers swaying in the breeze.
Marie-Thérèse’s work is well-known to a generation of children all over the three counties for her work as eekbatik, producing giant vibrant batiks in schools. She is also a regular supporter of the Malvern Spring and Autumn garden shows exhibiting her work with the Worcestershire Guild of Designer Craftsman in the Wye Hall. In the meantime, work continues to prepare for ‘Designed For Christmas’, the showcase of contemporary hand-crafted gifts which takes place at Weavers Gallery in Ledbury between 2nd and 14th December. For more details, and to find out about batik workshops, you can speak to Marie Thérèse by calling (01684) 573684 or emailing mariethereseking69@hotmail.com. You can see more of her work at batikandglass.co.uk
Now working at The Art Cabin, Caves Folly Nursery, Colwall. Designing and making etched glass for architecture and exquisitely produced batik paintings on Indonesian cotton. She works to commission. Batik Workshop Vouchers also available £70 for a programme of workshops in 2015 - a fun, inspiring day creating your own batik, includes light lunch. Parrys of Malvern Original jewellery from a local designer makes its debut at Parrys in Malvern in time for this Christmas. Jim White creates individually designed earrings, pendants, brooches and other wonderful items at his studio in Upper Colwall. ‘It’s the first time we’ve stocked something made so locally’ says David Siviter. ‘Jim has created some beautiful pieces which include celtic knots and apple pendants as well as stylish earrings with a hint of Art Noveau and Art Deco in their design.’
offers an opportunity to give a really special Christmas gift. ‘As with all our jewellery, we’re very particular about the quality of the precious stones’ says David, ‘whether that be diamonds or rubies and emeralds - in all cases we choose stones with brilliance and vibrant colour.’
Trollbeads continue to be very popular with customers. These unique beads, crafted in silver, gold and glass are highly collectible. ‘We have many customers who collect them and want the new designs which are regularly launched’ says David. The shop keeps its stock of Trollbeads fully updated and give customers the opportunity to stay informed of what’s new with special Trollbeads events.
The shop, which David and his family have run for 40 years, sees returning customers from the second or third generation of the same family, who appreciate the chance to browse jewellery and seek advice before buying. ‘We have long experience in all aspects of the jewellery business’ says David, ‘and as we approach Christmas we look forward to welcoming both new and returning customers.’
There is plenty to choose from in Parrys’ collection of watches from several high quality brands while their range of diamond jewellery

The Inn at Redmarley The Inn at Redmarley is preparing for its first Christmas under a new owner. Since a full refurbishment earlier this year, it’s become a great place to dine and also offers overnight accommodation and a private dining area for larger groups. ‘My aim is to create a Country Inn’ says the owner Myles Ball, ‘a place to bring your family for good food at an affordable price. There’s something special about walking into a pub with an open fire, the murmer of conversation and a friendly welcome.’ Myles’ other pub, the nearby Duke of York at Berrow has become very popular thanks to its excellent menu and welcoming atmosphere. Both pubs pride themselves on a menu that offers something for everyone. With generous portions at sensible prices they have become a favourite of regular diners. ‘We use local suppliers for much of our food which allows us to offer the very best quality produce’ says Myles. ‘We’ve also become known for our fish dishes, with fresh seafood delivered to us daily.’
The private dining room can hold as many as 36 people. It’s being put to good use for Christmas parties but is also popular for family gatherings as well as weddings and office functions. ‘We also offer bed and breakfast accommodation’ says Myles, ‘which is used not only by tourists but also business people and locals who need to find somewhere to accommodate visiting family members.’ As a Free House, the range of drinks at The Inn is carefully chosen and includes Wye Valley beers, local ciders and wine recommended by Hay Wines in Ledbury. The Inn at Redmarley is on the A417 between Ledbury and Staunton. Myles and all the staff look forward to welcoming you soon.

Garden
Green Fingers At Caves Folly in Colwall Bridget is drawing up a Christmas list with a horticultural theme.
www.cavesfolly.com 01684 540631 At this time of year everyone is rushing around buying presents, planning meals and parties, there is not much time to think about the garden. Presents for the gardener can be bought for very little, they are not fattening and they won’t be stuffed at the back of a cupboard! There is nothing a gardener likes better than a packet of seeds, something to look forward to in the Spring. Trees also make good presents. Think about small trees such as Malus (crab apple) Prunus (cherry) and Sorbus (Rowan). There are also shrubs, roses, planted containers or pot plants which all make a welcome gift amongst all the electronic, plastic and ‘essential ‘gadgets. The cheapest present of all is a day of your help in the garden. Why not offer to give an elderly parent or relative a day chopping and clearing in their garden - it’s a great way of spending time with all the family, working off the Christmas excess and it also gets the children away from the computer. Once Christmas is over we have to survive January. In an ideal world we should pack our bags and go to warmer climes for a couple of months. If, like me, that’s not an option then don’t despair! Swap your flip flops for wellies and cocktails for hot chocolate and get out in the garden for a leisurely dig.
32
There are lots of jobs to do in the garden in winter: Finish any landscaping work such as pathways and patios ready for the Spring. Re-shape borders and dig up and divide any congested herbaceous perennial clumps. Prune apples, pears and grapevines. Cut back overgrown shrubs such as Dogwood, Hazel and Willow to the base. Plant bare-root trees and bushes. Apply well rotted manure to the vegetable garden and borders. Order seeds and summer bulbs for Spring. Spread out well rotted compost on the garden. Clean out the greenhouse and prepare for seed sowing next month. Finally, try not to work too hard and have a Happy Christmas and a floriferous New Year.

Ledbury Town news
Ledbury Community Choir Christmas Past, Christmas Present is a concert filled with seasonal music and sung by The Ledbury Community Choir. It’s filled with well known songs and carols and will raise money for two charities helping the Armed Forces. Valerie Clark from the choir tells us more.
Have you done this before? Yes, we have a Christmas concert every year and the community love the well-known Christmas songs and carols. We always offer something slightly different but the audience always gets an opportunity to sing along too!
What will you be singing this time? We are singing some of the carols as they used to be sung many years ago, and then contrasting them with a modern version. Of course we will also be singing some of the old favourites, as well as a comedy item entitled ‘Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer’!

Which charity will benefit from the money raised by the concert? Very often we support the charity chosen by The Mayor of Ledbury, but this is not set in stone. For instance, one of our members was helped by the Air Ambulance Service after a bad accident, and so we made a donation to them. On another occasion, we supported Community Voluntary Action that helps local people in many practical ways. Our donation from this concert will go to the Mayor’s chosen charities this year, The Royal British Legion and SSAFA, organisations that support servicemen and women, veterans, and their families. Christmas Past, Christmas Present is at the Ledbury Market Theatre on Friday 19th and Saturday 20th December at 7.30pm. Tickets cost £10, please phone (01531) 634630 or (01531) 634105 to book.

Christmas Tree Festival at the Church of St James The Great, Cradley From Saturday December 6th There can hardly be anything more seasonal than a church filled with twinkling decorations on christmas trees. This will be the second time Cradley Church has hosted a Festival of Christmas Trees which sees local people decorate trees placed in the church. ‘We first held this festival two years ago’ says Di Merker, one of the organisers, ‘and around thirty trees were decorated which made the church look beautiful.’ The trees are decorated by local groups including the Primary School and the Village Hall and this year they’ll be decorated in the theme of favourite christmas carols. The church is open every day if you’d like to visit and if you’d like to decorate a tree then talk to Di on (01886) 880303 or via email on themerkers@tinyworld.co.uk The trees will be on display until Saturday January 3rd 2015.

Film news
Flicks in the Sticks There’s nothing quite as enjoyable as settling down to watch a good film on a cold, dark winter’s evening. There is something especially enjoyable about doing it in the company others – laughing at the same moments, chatting about the plot and who gave the best performance. If you live in Bosbury or Colwall there are regular film screenings brought to your village by ‘Flicks in the Sticks’.
COMING UP
- Films start at 7.30pm
‘We try to have a mix of new releases as well as some less well-known gems’ says John Harradence who helps to put on the film evenings at Colwall Village Hall. ‘It’s a lovely social evening, with drinks on sale when the doors open. We also have a break in the middle of the film which is a chance for people to chat with each other and enjoy ice cream, drinks and occasionally also nibbles.’ Food and drink prices are very reasonable and the screenings at Bosbury Parish Hall even have their own homemade ice cream!
Colwall – 5th December – Undertaking Betty – An offbeat comedy in which Betty (Brenda Blethyn) finds herself stuck in a marriage that’s killing her.
Flicks in the Sticks is overseen by Arts Alive, an organisation promoting the arts in rural areas.
For full local listings of forthcoming screenings see www.allaboutmalvernhills.com

They support the local promotors by providing advice and technical expertise. ‘We hear from other venues on the films that go down well, but we sometimes take a chance on films we have enjoyed’ says John. ‘Last month we showed the Well Digger’s Daughter, a french film with subtitles which the audience really enjoyed. We like to offer something for everyone in our audience.’
Bosbury – 19th December - Grow Your Own – A gentle British comedy about a bunch of grumpy men who are less than happy when a family of asylum seekers moves in on their precious patch. Bosbury – 16th January & Colwall 23rd January 2015 – Belle, a film inspired by the true story of the illegitimate daughter of an Admiral

Malvern Theatres News
Aladdin Vacuum your magic carpets, dust off your old lamps and get yourself down to Malvern Theatres for that most magical of Christmas family pantomimes Aladdin, from Thursday 11th December 2014 to Sunday 4th January 2015. Will Aladdin, the poor son of a laundry owner, played by Hi-5’s Chris Edgerley, get to marry the Princess played by Rebecca Marks, or will his plans be foiled by the evil Abanazar played by the one and only Robert Powell (Jesus of Nazareth, The Detectives, Holby City)? On hand to help Aladdin is the Slave of the Ring played by Carrie Rawlings, and hindering rather than helping with his hilarious antics will be Channel 5’s Milkshake presenter Derek Moran as Wishee Washee. Owner of ‘Twankey’s Laundry’, the old scrubber herself Widow Twankey is played by one of the country’s leading pantomime dames Ian Good. They’ll be joined by Mark James as PC Pong, Spencer K Gibbins as The Emperor and Connor J Barrie as The Genie.
Competition
Win two tickets to Aladdin In the story of Aladdin, how many wishes is he granted by the genie? Email the answer plus your name, postcode and phone number to competition@allabout-local.com by Sunday 14 December 2014. The winners will be drawn from the entries and notified by Monday 15 December. Good luck! *For terms & conditions see our website www.allaboutworcester.com

Well-Being
new
beginnings In December we move through the longest night, the days begin to lengthen, January appears, and we think about resolutions and new beginnings.
By Kaspa Thompson As I write this the new beginning that I am facing is the opening of our new Buddhist temple in the centre of Malvern. The house buying process is in the final stages but not complete. I hope that by the time you are reading this we will be settled in, but at the moment all of that is in front of me. New projects are exciting. There can be a rush of energy as the pieces fall into place and we imagine our future successes. At the same time new projects, like New Year’s resolutions, can take us to the edge of our comfort zones. In the space between excitement and fear, and the known and the unknown, we meet hidden parts of ourselves: deeply held beliefs that may have been an unseen influence on our lives for many years. Occasionally I catch myself imagining what life will be like in the new temple. Sometimes I imagine that things will go smoothly and I’ll enjoy my life there, and sometimes I imagine that I will have to work hard to stop people being disappointed in me. I find myself imagining that someone doesn’t like the new cupboard I’ve chosen, or the way I’ve decorated the hall, or the talk I have just given. I imagine how to protect my reputation from their disappointment, even though it hasn’t happened yet. It’s inevitable that someone will be disappointed in me at some point. But the frequency that my thoughts turn to that particular scenario suggests that this is something more than the wandering of an idle mind. Somewhere in the depths of my unconscious is a belief that I’ll only be okay if no one is ever disappointed in me. When I bring this belief out into the light it’s plainly false. People have been
50
disappointed in me in the past and I’ve survived. This belief has the potential to get me into trouble. If I’m worrying about what people think then how can I choose the best cupboard that’s right for the space, or how to decorate the hallway, or give a half-decent talk? I’d be frozen into inaction and the worry about disappointing people would, ironically, make it much more likely that they really would be disappointed. Having caught a glimpse of this belief I can look out for it in my daily life. If I catch myself putting off work I can ask, “Is this for a good reason or has that old worry come back?” If it’s the worry, I can notice that it’s there and then get on with the work anyway. The work will get done, some people will like it and some won’t, and the belief will be shaken in the face of the evidence that it really is okay to disappoint people sometimes. Eventually it might disappear altogether. If we always live inside our comfort zones we don’t get to learn these things about ourselves. Beginning a new project and being taken to our learning edge is not always the most pleasant place to be. There can be fear and confusion alongside the excitement and celebration. If we can allow ourselves to see the unhelpful beliefs we have been keeping hidden, we can start to let them go and move forwards more lightly, relaxed and efficiently.

Tips to help you reduce sugar: • Sugar is addictive. Cut it down gradually and you won’t even notice it! • Avoid processed foods with words ending in ‘ose’ such as sucrose, dextrose, maltose, glucose, especially if these ingredients are high up on the food label ingredients list. • Be aware that fat free can be more fattening than ‘normal’ foods! • Go for an oat-based cereal, add nuts and seeds full of nutrients and good fats. Also add ground flax seeds (gradually increase amount added to a heaped dessertspoon) – this will keep you feeling fuller longer thereby reducing the need to snack! • Reduce alcohol gradually. • Replace cakes and biscuits with a piece of fruit and a few unsalted mixed seeds and nuts. • Set yourself realistic goals to reduce sugar. • Eliminate foods to which you are intolerant. New Year, New You - Relax! The new year gives us an opportunity to invite something different into our lives, a clean slate after the festivities, a time to attend to what we really need, a new class, yoga, taichi or a creative right brain activity like an art class? Learning to relax is a very important key to unlock tensions and stress, to reverse the fight or flight mechanism, which turns on at speed to get us through the stressful times frequently throughout the day, but leaves us tight, below par and wrung out. Learning to relax can be so simple, but giving you a few minutes to practise and be still, herein lies the problem. Relaxing calms “the monkey mind” so we can listen to our needs and discover what really nourishes us. Top tips You can sit on a chair or lie down and place your hands on your collar bones and observe the collar bones floating and spreading as you breathe, after a few minutes move your hands to your belly and observe the front body lightly lifting, spreading and sinking under your hand prints for a few minutes. What we no longer need to carry can leave the body and is replaced by clear, vital, bright energy to see us through our days, with an energized mind and body. For more tips see my website www.meridianyoga.net or join my new relax class! Alexandra Jones
