Competition

Win a £40 voucher* for food in the newly refurbished ‘1919 Restaurant’ Be the first to experience 1919 Restaurant & Bar. Enter this competition to be in with a chance to win £40 to enjoy the newly refurbished destination restaurant. 1919 is the new restaurant and bar at The Cottage in the Wood, which is currently undergoing complete refurbishment to restore ‘The Main House’ back to its Georgian glory. The project is part of a £2.5 million refurbishment plan and will honour the property and the surrounding location’s history, including links with literary greats and good friends C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien, and the composer Edward Elgar. Set in the Malvern Hills, the theme of the redesign is based on the era the building was built and the nature that surrounds it. With soft Georgian grey, stunning nature-themed aesthetics, classic modern chandeliers and mirrors to reflect the spectacular views over the Malvern Hills will be incorporated into the redesign of the restaurant.

In the bar the design will create cosy, colourful and eclectic areas, with deep blue bookcases stacked with literary classics, design books and more. Georgian green walls will be adorned with old photographs of the local area, an image of Elgar and a contemporary painting of a traditional Malvern gas lamp by a local artist. Enter now to be in with a chance to win £40 to enjoy at 1919 Restaurant & Bar, by answering the following question: What is 1919? a. The name of the new Restaurant & Bar at The Cottage in the Wood b. LEDBURY SWIMMING POOL MASTER’S HOUSE EXHIBITION Over the past few months, volunteers have been translating leaflets at The Master’s House in Ledbury into different languages. From Welsh to Spanish and from French to Polish, the work makes it much easier for visitors to appreciate this fine building and helps turn it into a visitor destination. To celebrate the culmination of The Translation Project, an exhibition of the translated materials is being held from Thursday 30th March until 15th April. The exhibition is a celebration of all the languages used in the area and places the history of the Master’s House into the context of wider European events over the centuries.

The refurbishment of Ledbury Swimming Pool continues. The building on Lawnside Road is undergoing major work to modernise the changing facilities as well as a larger gym and exercise studio. With the roof now on, the scaffolding has been coming down as finishing touches are put to the interior of the building. The work is partly funded by £500,000 of National Lottery Money awarded by Sport England and is due to be completed in April.

For information and opening times call 01432 383499 or email ledburylibrary@herefordshire.gov.uk

Business News WYKEHAM GARDENS Wykeham Gardens plant nursery is gearing up for Spring! Based in Leigh Sinton, they offer a range of shrubs, perennials, bulbs and annuals and is run by husband and wife team Rachael & Andy Mahy. ‘For this season we’re expanding the number of shade-loving plants as well as plants for rockeries’ explains Rachael. ‘There’s plenty of renewed interest in rockeries at the moment and we’re able to advise on the best plants to use, chosen from our collection.’ As well as the nursery, Rachel and Andy run a garden design and maintenance business, and advise this is a good moment to re-design borders or move a bed. ‘We are looking for a trainee to join us’ continues Rachael, ‘offering the chance to learn more on the landscaping and maintenance side of the business.’ The plant nursery is situated at Crowcroft House Farm in Leigh Sinton (WR13 5ED) just off the A4103 on the edge of the village towards Cradley. It re-opens at the end of February on Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 10am until 5pm and on Sundays and Bank Holiday Mondays from 11am until 4pm. cinderella - a fairytale Colwall Players and Young Colwall Players present a ‘dazzlingly original take’ on one of the best loved tales of all time.

have a slight twist to the Disney or pantomime versions. Instead of a fairy godmother, we’ve got an ensemble of birds - they are a benevolent presence. The play is exciting, full of heart and spirit.’

When Ella’s mothers dies, she is brought up by her devoted and loving father who teaches her the names and calls of the woodland birds that surround their home. But when her father marries again, Ella’s peaceful life is turned upside down by a host of new and unpleasant relations. It appears her only allies are the feathered friends who roost in the trees, but they are no ordinary birds...

The youngest member of the cast is nine years old and during rehearsals, the entire cast has contributed plenty of ideas and creativity. Without giving too much away, some of the highlights include amazing puppetry and the chopping off of toes! ‘This is the first production of The Colwall Players 30th anniversary year’ continues Claire, ‘and is a great way to start the celebrations!’

Written by Sally Cookson and Adam Peck, this version of the classic tale was first performed in Bristol in 2011 before moving to London’s Unicorn Theatre in 2013 to huge critical acclaim. ‘I love this version’ says Claire Farley, the Director. ‘I thought it would be the perfect play for a cast of mixed ages and a great opportunity for younger members to take the lead. This story of Cinderella is inspired by the Brothers Grimm so is a bit darker than most, the characters

Recipe

HEARTWARMING MUSHROOM SOUP Fry the butter and garlic cloves until soft, then remove the garlic cloves. Add the thinly sliced mushrooms and dry fry until evenly cooked. Mix in the stock, herbs and potato and leave to cook gently with a lid on for about half an hour. Whizz in the liquidiser, season to taste and serve with a swirl of cream.

Ingredients 500g mushrooms (any variety) 100g butter 8 whole fresh peeled garlic cloves 1 tsp. of dried mixed herbs or ½ tablespoon of fresh herbs, eg. parsley, thyme, rosemary 1 large peeled potato chopped in to cubes (or leftover cooked potato) 1.75 litres of chicken/vegetable stock Salt and freshly milled black pepper Single cream (to garnish)

To vary, you can add a bit more butter, or use a pre-made garlic butter and different kinds of mushrooms. This recipe was kindly provided by Neil from The Nest near Ledbury, a Family Friendly Deli Cafe serving local and Artisan produce. Love music

Recorder allsorts If you are an enthusiastic recorder player, Recorder Allsorts needs you!

come and sing

This local group of musicians meets to practise and perform recorder music, with an emphasis on pieces from the 16th to 18th centuries.

Malvern Festival Chorus is hosting a Come and Sing workshop in Great Malvern Priory with a bit of a ‘Feast’ theme. Everyone is welcome to join them at Great Malvern Priory on Saturday 11th February to bring some cheer to a dark February Saturday.

‘The clear sound of the recorder can be beautiful to listen to’ says Grenville Sheringham who has been with the group for many years. We welcome players of any ability’ continues Grenville. ‘If you have been playing by yourself for a while, this is a great opportunity to play with other instruments. We choose our pieces based on the ability of the group. Players might only have played descant recorder, but might be thinking ‘I could play the tenor or treble recorder’ and start to branch out. We play garklein, sopranino, descant, treble, tenor and bass recorders.’ The group gives three or four short performances a year. If you are interested in playing with Recorder Allsorts, they meet weekly at Colwall Village Hall. Contact Grenville on (01886) 832558 or via email, grenvillesheringham@gmail.com

32

You’ll be able to gorge on a menu of Parry’s Jerusalem and Hallelujah choruses by both Handel and Beethoven, as well as much-loved choruses from works by Haydn, Brahms, Mozart, Fauré and Rossini. The workshop will be followed by a short concert featuring the works covered during the day, so if you prefer to be sung to rather than to sing, come and experience a very different kind of ‘Feast’ in a glorious setting. More details can be found on Malvern Festival Chorus’s website at malvernfestivalchorus.co.uk

Local Walk

Ledbury Town Centre Heritage Walk By Carl Flint This circular walk around Ledbury uncovers the considerable heritage Ledbury has to offer. The walk will delve into nooks, crannies and alleyways not often observed and which Ledbury has in abundance. Although the distance covered is not great, it will be impossible just to walk this route without recourse to absorbing and reflecting on the architecture and history that is just around each corner. So be prepared to spend two hours and quite possibly up to three hours undertaking this fascinating walk. The walk can be started at any convenient point. So if arriving by car it is probably best to park in St Katherine’s car park which is the main town centre pay and display car park next to St Katherine’s Hospital and the Master’s House.

This is the QR code for the church carillon. It really makes this a real 'talking book'. If you scan the code with your phone you can hear the Ledbury Parish Church carillon and see pictures of the interior of the church which relate to the church tour section in the text.

To download the full details of the walk, please visit our website allaboutmalvernhills.com and choose Walking on the Malvern Hills & in Malvern under the ‘Local Life’ tab.

Gardening

green fingers Spring is just around the corner and Bridget Evans from Cave’s Folly Nursery in Colwall says it’s time to prepare your garden. It is a great comfort to know that Brexit hasn’t changed the regular cycles of nature and the routine jobs in the garden are still the same! This time of year can be cold and miserable, but the signs of Spring are starting and in a few weeks the sun will gain some warmth and the ground will explode with life. It is time to sow seeds in the greenhouse or on the windowsill and to prepare the soil outside for direct sowing in the borders and the veg garden. Sowing seeds early indoors is a great way to increase the flowering time of annuals or the yield of vegetables. Damping off (seedlings collapsing and dying) can be a problem especially when raising seeds in the house. There are several causes including high humidity, low air movement, thickly sown seed or unclean seed trays and modules. All these conditions are easily rectified by cultural controls. Always harden plants of for a couple of weeks before planting out and avoid frosts. Plant annuals undercover in modules, such as Cosmos, Cornflower, Larkspur, Nemesia or Zinia to gain longer flowering period in the borders. Vegetable plants such as broad beans, mixed salad leaves, lettuce, brassicas and peas can be raised early. Tomatoes can be sown in February only in a frost free greenhouse.

dress with compost • You can still plant bare-root hedging, roses, fruit trees • Cut back Cornus and Salix to the base (leaving 2 or 3 buds) • Prune summer flowering deciduous shrubs such as Buddleja, Lavandula, Santolina, Hydrangea and Lavatera In the vegetable garden: • Seed beds need working down and a general fertiliser such as blood fish and bone added to the soil • Add a mulch to tree and cane fruit to retain the moisture during the summer • Plant garlic cloves If you have not sown any seeds before why not have a go this Spring? After 38 years in horticulture I still marvel at the miracle of tiny seeds developing into plants of all shapes and sizes.

Bridget

If you have a small garden, why not try going upwards? Grow some exotic annual climbers to go up the fence or through an existing conifer or shrub. Climbers such as Rhodochiton atrosanguineus with its long pink pendulous flowers, or another South American plant Ecremocarpus scaber with red, pink or orange tubular flowers. There is plenty to get on with outside too: • Clear perennial weeds and hoe regularly. A few minutes each week will keep them under control before the season gets into full swing • Divide old woody perennial clumps and top

Well Being

feel better by helping others By Satya Robyn

w

hen people first come to a Buddhist service here at the temple, we often ask if they’d be happy to help wash up after our post-service cup of tea. This introduces them straight away to the culture of the group here, where we encourage everyone to muck in and help each other out. We encourage people to be kind to each other because it is a good thing to be kind to each other, but there is also a happy side-effect to helping others. Helping others makes us feel good and brings us many other benefits. We all know the feeling we get when we have been of use to someone. This weekend we organised a surprise birthday party for a friend and this took a fair bit of work. When we saw their shocked and happy face, it was all worth it – at the end of the day we were exhausted but we felt great. We can find pleasure from helping people out in smaller ways too – giving them directions when they look lost, or being courteous when we’re driving and slowing down to let them out of a junction. Helping others also connects us to other people and to the broader community, and it stops us from feeling isolated. It can be a great way of getting to know people. It’s also a good way of learning about ourselves – both by paying attention to the person we’re helping, and by noticing our own reactions as we help. I have felt inspired recently by someone who is coping with a very difficult situation with great grace, and I also learnt something about setting boundaries when helping someone who wanted ‘endless help’. How can we begin to practice helping others? 1. Smile and say thank you. Give a genuine smile to the woman at the check-out or the man you pass walking on the hills. If you really enjoy

40

your meal, ask your waiter to pass on your thanks to the chef. These small acts don’t take much time, but might change someone’s whole day. 2. Send out some love. Identify someone who needs some support at the moment, and spend five minutes sitting quietly and sending out love towards them. This is called ‘metta practice’ – who knows whether it has any effect on the person you’re holding in mind, but it’s good practice for us, and it can’t be doing them any harm! 3. Send a letter or give something away. If you’re wondering how an old friend is doing, write and ask them. Send your niece a card. Buy an extra pack of biscuits when you go shopping and give them to your friend or someone you feel grateful to. 4. Perform one random act of kindness a week. If your neighbour mentions she’s having trouble keeping her weeds down, offer her an hour’s weeding or pay for someone to come in. Give five pounds to a Charity. Send your mother-in-law some flowers. 5. Offer to volunteer. A variety of organisations who do great work use volunteers – we have regular volunteers here in the temple garden, or you could help a child with their reading, or pick up litter. See what opportunities are available. Enjoy your helping, and let me know how you get on – satya@satyarobyn.com.

Legal advice

A GUIDE TO SEPARATING - by Lucy Webley A breakdown of your relationship, whether you have children or not, is often one of the most emotionally complicated and stressful times of your life. If you find yourself facing a separation from your partner, whether you are married or not, then early legal advice can make all the difference to the outcome. Lucy Webley is a family law solicitor at Orme and Slade, with 20 years experience. She is a member of Resolution (the national association of family solicitors). Lucy will guide you through every step of the process and aim to secure settlements without the need for Court. In order to get divorced or to dissolve a civil partnership, the following must apply: • your marriage must be legally recognised in the UK; • you have been married for over a year; • and one of you must live in England or Wales. Having sent a petition to the Court setting out your reasons, (provided your spouse does not object) a decree nisi will be granted by the Court. This means that there is no reason why the divorce cannot go ahead. Following that a decree absolute is applied for which legally ends the marriage. There is usually no need to attend Court. A financial settlement will need separate consideration, whether your assets are large or small. Just because you are divorced that won’t resolve financial obligations. It is always best for both of you to consider and agree upon a sound financial settlement. This will give you peace of mind for the future. If agreement is not possible, either by negotiation or formal mediation then the Court can assist as a last resort. If you simply lived together, different considerations will apply. Here, it is particularly important to take legal advice if you have children together or own property. For disagreements involving arrangements for children, the Court always has to look at what is in the best interests of the child. In the majority of separations, arrangements can be negotiated successfully between the parties or through Mediation. If not then an application to the Court can be made. For further information or to make an appointment please contact Lucy Webley on 01531 632226 or lcw@ormeandslade.co.uk

Theatre News

English Touring Theatre in association with Nica Burns, Eleanor Lloyd Productions and Paula Marie Black presents the Shakespeare Globe’s Production of

Nell Gwynn By Jessica Swale Winner of the 2016 Olivier Award for Best New Comedy. Jessica Swale’s blissfully funny Nell Gwynn embarks on its first ever UK tour, direct from critically acclaimed, sell out runs in the West End and at the Globe Theatre. 1660 Drury Lane. Charles II has cast off London’s drab, puritanical past with a love of all things loud, French and sexy. A young Nell Gwynn is selling oranges for sixpence in London’s burgeoning West End theatre scene unaware of who is in the audience one fateful night. Jessica Swale’s warm-hearted, bawdy comedy tells the story of an unlikely heroine, who went from lowly orange seller to win the adoration of the public and the heart of the King.
