This month marks three complete years of publishing this magazine. Designing the first edition back in 2009, I had no idea if it would work, certainly I had no idea that I’d still be here three years later! Today, we have two editions, hundreds of advertisers and thousands of people reading us. The magazine is not a franchise; it is designed and produced entirely by me, with back up from a small team looking after sales, administration and distribution. We are one hundred percent local! After three years of success, we’re now working towards increasing our presence online. That doesn’t mean the magazine decreases in importance, far from it, we’re also investing time and effort to improve the layout and look of the magazine. So when it pops through your door in future months then you’ll see one or two changes. Thank you everyone for the support, here’s to the next three years! And keep an eye out for those great Mother’s Day treats and gift ideas, there are plenty to find throughout the magazine. Sascha

Search & Rescue You’ll find them out on the Hills in all weathers, helping people who get into difficulty. The members of ATBRUSAR are a team of volunteers, trained in first aid, who give up their time to respond as soon as an emergency call comes in.
Photographs by Richard Corrall / ATBRU Search and Rescue
‘Our name stands for ‘All Terrain Bike Responder Unit Search and Rescue’ explains Richard Corrall, the team’s Communications Officer. ‘Our group began in 2009 and it was soon apparent that our service is at times crucial, especially towards the southern end of the hills, where access by vehicles is limited. We’re proud of what we’ve achieved so far’. As well as working on the Malverns, the team also carries out duties in Worcester, sometimes responding on mountain bike, sometimes on foot. Richard joined last May after reading about the team in the local press. They’d just begun making regular patrols on and around the hills, and since that time, their work has steadily increased. ‘We completed something like 105 jobs last year, and this January alone we attended 23 call outs, 11 of which were on the hills’.
The incidents range from twisted ankles and minor injuries to more serious problems involving neck and head trauma. ‘It might be people coming off bikes, or an awkward fall, or a crash involving a vehicle’ says Richard. ‘The majority of our callouts come through the ambulance service. They will contact us, depending on the nature of the call. Typically, in an urban area an ambulance is expected to arrive within 8 minutes, but on the Hills we’ve had incidents where its been hard for an ambulance to get there as quickly. Sometimes, because of weather conditions or other factors, the Air Ambulance might not be able to land and so one of the things we can do is provide a first response which will facilitate a casualty’s evacuation in a timely manner’. Members of the group undergo continuous training. ‘There are two main elements’ explains Richard, ‘as well as medical training we hold further in-house sessions covering local environmental conditions and the kinds of illnesses and injuries specific to the Hills. We also undergo training in search and rescue skills and communications to make sure we offer the best possible service. Our team leader’s background was in the Army so he brings a lot of valuable practical

by Bike skills. We operate in a professional manner, we take our job seriously and its important to communicate that’. ‘We have all sorts of volunteers. I’m a web designer so this is quite different to my day job! People get involved because of a passion for the outdoors, or their desire to help others. Some of us are now looking to progress into a career in the emergency or medical services, so this experience can provide a valuable stepping stone’. Richard is keen to stress the importance of being prepared for a trip on the hills. ‘In the past year, there were four deaths on the Malvern Hills, while the total for Snowdon and Ben Nevis combined was three. Our local hills are a fantastic and beautiful place to be, but we have to be respectful of them. Our message would be to please come and enjoy them but bear in mind that conditions can change’. The group recently opened a small base from which they can operate, close to the British Camp, and they’re grateful for the help they receive from the Conservators, as well as the local firms who helped refurbish the building. ‘We have good relations with the Conservators, they help us in many ways. Likewise we help them too, keeping an eye out for anything untoward’. The group is keen to improve its ability to respond, but is dependent on limited funds; the costs of medical equipment and keeping mountain bikes on the go all mount up. ‘We’re very reliant on donations’ explains Richard, ‘we always have a collection bucket ready and we rely heavily on the public for help. Occasionally we are fortunate to receive grants but on a day to day basis its a case of working hard to keep the service running. In the relatively short time we’ve been operating I’m confident to say we’ve saved several lives, which does suggest there’s a significant need for our service’.

MacMillan Cancer Support There’s a busy Spring & Summer of fund raising ahead for the Colwall & Ledbury Branch of Macmillan Cancer Support. The fun begins on Friday 20th April with a Family Quiz & Ploughman’s Supper at Colwall Village Hall, in June there’s a concert with the Professional Counter Tenor Nick Clapton, while later in the year there’s another concert planned with Volante Strings. ‘We’re a very welcoming group of people and offer entertainment for people of all ages’ says the group’s Chairman Jenni Griggs. ‘We’re keen to see more families
and younger members of the community join in, which is why we’re holding our Family Quiz next month. It will be a chance for you to meet us, and we promise that if you bring children, its something they’ll really enjoy’. ‘We raised over £6,000 last year, and we’d like to thank everyone for their generous support’ continues Jenni. ‘Last October was the official opening of the Macmillan Renton Unit at Hereford Hospital, and several people have said how the pleasant surroundings and caring staff have made the experience of undergoing chemotherapy more bearable’. If you’d like to keep up to date with all of the group’s activities, please send your email address to jennigriggs@mail.com, details will also be published in this magazine.

A previously vacant building near the Wyche Cutting has been given a new lease of life and will bring employment opportunities to the area. ‘The Wyche Innovation Centre’ has opened in the former Skot Transformers Building in Upper Colwall and offers space for small businesses. Several high-tech companies have already moved in, dealing in software development, information security as well as a digital marketing company. Dr Emma Philpott and Dr Adrian Burden, who live locally, are behind the centre. They hope it will create a local hub for technology businesses but also offer something for smaller, home-based businesses in the area. ‘We’re offering ‘hot desks’ which anybody can use’ says Emma. ‘They can be rented for as little as one day a week. We also have a meeting room, and in the near future hope to expand our offering to the local community even further’. The couple believe the area is ideal for

small, high-tech companies. ‘We are fortunate to be home to some of the best scientists and innovators in the UK. With emerging markets in areas such as cyber-security, renewable energy and nanotechnology, it is vital that we harness this resource of talent before it disperses during these difficult economic times. Therefore, we want to make it really enticing for new technology-focused businesses to anchor here and to help grow the local economy.” More details about the centre can be found at www.wyche-innovation.com

All About... ...John Bishop Old Rustic, Volume 1 is a new collection of rural reminiscences by John Bishop from Old Colwall. The book gathers together a selection of local stories which are published every month in ‘The Clock’, Colwall’s Parish Magazine.
So tell us how you came to write this book
It all began with Pat Neve (the former editor of ‘The Clock’). She said; ‘John, you’ve got to write a column’. I said I couldn’t possibly do it. Nigel Recorden had been writing for it, then when he put his pen to rest I decided to have a crack at it. I began by writing about my family and how we came to be in Colwall. It evolved from there, and since then, you name it, I’ve written about it, everything from the sheep to weather conditions, as well as my well-known hatred of bureaucracy! I like to have a commonsense approach, it’s as I see it, and I don’t like anybody interfering with what I write.
Was it difficult to start writing?
If I have one big hang up in life it’s my lack of education. I left school at the age of fifteen, so this has been a great thing, incredible, what else can I say. I was concerned at first, I’d never done anything like it. Each month I’d write 800 words for The Clock, to begin with I would have one capital letter at the start and a full stop at the other end, now we have paragraphs and everything! My grammar has improved, my wife Di is a great editor!
Are you surprised at how much people have loved your stories?
They do and I’m absolutely amazed. I can’t imagine now that three years ago I struggled with the first article. I thought it would just last a couple of months, then before I knew it, out it came every month. The worst thing is the deadlines, leaving the writing until the day before the magazine goes to press. But overall, I am amazed at the interest in the book. It looks like it’ll be a success, just wait till we get the series on the BBC!
22
Which charities are profits from its sale being donated to?
St. James the Great in Colwall will get half of the proceeds, I wanted to include the church as it was published in the church magazine and Melanie (the Reverend Horton) and others encouraged me to put it in a book. I said I’d like to split the money with Help for Heroes because it’s my pet charity. A man rang me from The publishers the other day inviting me to go to a local literary festival, we laughed about it but I am shocked and surprised at the interest. Maybe the interest is because although people live in the countryside they don’t know what goes on round and about. Farmers by nature can be be introverted and so this is a way to share our knowledge.
The book can be purchased from: Provisions of Colwall Colwall Park Hotel The Chase Inn, Upper Colwall Ledubry Books & Maps Country Wide Store in Ledbury

Green Fingers At Caves Folly in Colwall, Bridget reflects on the power of nature Each evening, after a day of hard physical work, I like to escape to the Hills or woods for a walk with my collie Sam. Walking through the countryside is very therapeutic and I can feel the stresses of the day lift from my shoulders as I notice a particular bird song, a butterfly, or a newly opened flower. As I weave my way through woodland to climb onto the Hills I get a sense of freedom that only green landscapes can give. Don’t underestimate the power of nature, walking is free, it keeps you fit and it relaxes the mind. I am not a religious person in the sense of belonging to an ordered faith, but I do believe that the power of nature is truly inspirational and healing to all human beings. When I was looking through a book on Sculpture the other day I came across the face of the Green Man. The idea of the Green Man as a representative of the natural world dates back to agrarian peoples of ancient times, who felt the power of nature and gave it a face and form. Both as an actual presence and as symbolic entities in their own right, the vast woodlands that in ancient times
covered much of our countryside made a deep and lasting impression on the imagination of those who dwelt close to their shaded depths. I personally have a deep connection with plants and nature through my work, but anyone can create greenery around them. Try making a window sill in the house or office which is full of house plants such as Weeping Figs, Ferns or Palms. People who are elderly or ill will benefit greatly by having greenery around them, to look at, to feel the leaves and to absorb the scent of a living plant. If you are a gardener you will know about the therapeutic nature of growing plants. If you are not familiar with this then give it a chance, get out and get muddy, its also fun! Back to practical therapy in March. Don’t forget to venture into the garden and sow all those seeds, the soil is warming up now and its a good time to sow Annuals and Vegetable plants. Cut back any dead wood on herbaceous Perennials, Lavenders and Penstemons to encourage new growth. Roses also need pruning and shaping now that the worst of the frosts have gone. Bridget

Spring is Coming! Helen Stace from Colwall Village Garden is looking forward to Spring The Wassailing seems to have done the trick and at last there are some promising signs of spring approaching! We have a lot to look forward to this year. Down at the Village Garden the ‘Allotmenteers’ have been taking delivery of lots of seeds, potatoes and soft fruit and are planning their plots for the coming year, including some very impressive raised beds. So we should have an even more impressive array of local organic home grown food this coming year. Our bees have been flying on the warm days, so hopefully we will have honey too this year. The finances We had a very busy autumn, raising funds for the Colwall Village Garden. We still have a debt of over £50,000 from the land purchase and need to raise about £10,000 every year for the next five years to pay this off. On top of that, we need extra funding to install water and electricity, plant the orchard, repair the Apple Packing Shed and make various improvements at the Garden. We now have enough money in hand to pay for the water connection and will be ordering that shortly. We have just been offered £5,000 from the Herefordshire Leader programme for electricity, bringing our electricity fund up to £9,600. Unfortunately, we still need to find an additional £5,000 so we would be pleased to hear from anyone with any ideas of how raise the shortfall.
lots of fruit trees ready for planting out into the main orchard. We have already planted up the children’s scrumping zone, but need more funds to plant the rest, so please consider sponsoring a tree. We have some spare fruit trees for sale at very reasonable prices, so do contact us if you are interested. The Orchards Group volunteers have also been out and about helping orchard owners across the village and also working with owners further afield, advising them on orchard management, new planting and other matters. So the future for orchards West of the Hills is looking bright. Helen STOP PRESS Spring is in the air, and frogs and toads are on the move. Please take care not to run them over if you are driving through the area on damp nights.
Volunteers At our volunteer day on 11th March we will be improving our sustainability by installing new guttering on the Apple Packing Shed roof and linking this up to a series of water butts, so there should be plenty of water for the new seeds in the spring. This means we will only need to call on the mains water supply when rainwater stocks are low or we need clean water for certain tasks like washing. The orchard folk have been heeling in Beehives at the Village Garden

Recipe Once Upon A Tree’s Cider, Sausage and Celeriac Casserole • 6-8 good quality sausages Serves 3 - 4 • Oil for frying • Large onion sliced • 1tbsp plain flour • 350ml dry cider (Michelin Oak or Marcle Ridge work best) • 350g celeriac (about half a celeriac) • 1tbsp Worcestershire sauce • 1tbsp chopped fresh sage • 1 Bramley apple Pre-heat your oven to 180°C. Heat a spoonful of oil in a frying pan and brown the sausages until evenly browned (about 5 mins). Transfer the sausages to a casserole dish. Sauté the onion until golden. Stir in 1 tbsp plain flour and gradually add around half a bottle of our Michelin Oak or Marcle Ridge dry cider whilst stirring and bring to the boil. Add 350g celeriac cut into large chunks, and cook for a couple of minutes. Stir in 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce and 1 tbsp chopped fresh sage. Season with salt and pepper and pour over the sausages in the casserole, cover and cook for 30 minutes. Core the Bramley apple and cut it into rings (no need to peel). Add the apple to the casserole and cook for a further 10 – 15 mins until soft. Serve with creamy mashed potato and steamed spring greens, and a glass of your favourite cider of course!
