2. Comic murder mystery ‘Murdered to Death’ is a comic murder-mystery performed by Wellington Heath Amateur Dramatic Society this October. The play is a spoof ‘whodunnit’ and centres on the efforts of an incompetent sleuth to solve a murder. Performances take place between 8th and 10th October, 7.30pm at Wellington Heath Memorial Hall. couch to 5k running for absolute beginners
If you'd like to get fit, but don't know where to start, Ledbury Harriers Running Club has a new course for people who'd like to start running. The 'Couch to 5k' programme is a chance to be given coaching and support from a former Olympic runner.

t the peak of her career, Sally Smart represented Britain at the Barcelona Olympics in 1992, running in the marathon. Since then she’s given a huge amount of her time and effort to the sport, helping countless numbers of runners at every level. As a UK Athletics Coach, it’s not just athletes at the top level that Sally helps – she is a strong advocate of the benefits of her sport for those of us who might like to try it, but don’t know where to begin. ‘There are many times when I have seen people believing they could never do it, then going on to run half marathons or play other sports’ she says. ‘Age is no barrier to taking up running and as well as the physical benefits there is an improved sense of well being and self-worth.’
are ready to take part in a 5 kilometres (3 miles) Park Run. Each session starts at Ledbury Rugby Club when routes of two or three miles will be walked and run. As well as Sally, other members of the Ledbury Harriers will come along to help the new runners, joining them on their runs to motivate them and give support if they struggle. So if running is so good, what stops people from taking it up? ‘I think it’s a fear they can’t do it or are too embarrassed’ says Sally. ‘When some people start they set off too fast, get out of breath and think they’ll never do it. The beauty of our Couch to 5k programme is that it starts at a low level and it’s a mix of walking and running. You will be in a group and see other people in same situation as you, and you help motivate each other.’
The first Couch to 5k programme has just started and thanks to the popularity of the idea, new sessions will start early in the new year. Over nine weeks, participants start with walking and jogging before building up their fitness until they

Tuesday evening at Ledbury Rugby Club at 6.30pm, and they head out whatever the weather. The club caters for all abilities of running and holds regular social events. One of the club's highlights is The Magnificent Eastnor Castle Seven, a rural run which happens every spring that takes in the woods, fields and tracks around Eastnor, finishing with a climb to the Obelisk. Despite the challenges it attracts runners of all abilities.

CHIRSTMAS TEA AT THE RITZ IN MATHON Mathon’s popular Christmas Tea at The Ritz event takes place this year on Sunday 13th December. CHRISTMAS LIGHTS SWITCH ON EVENTS Christmas Lights Switch On events take place in Ledbury and in Malvern on Saturday 28th November. In Ledbury, Father Christmas arrives in the centre of town at 1pm, and there will be music and entertainment through the afternoon before the lights are switched on outside The Market House at 4.30pm. In Malvern there’s a food and art market during the day as well as music and children’s activities before the parade at 5.30pm leading to the lights switch on.
LEDBURY SHORT MAT BOWLS CLUB Ledbury Short Mat Bowls Club is starting a new evening session from October, taking place every Thursday evening from 7pm. The club already meets at the Community Centre in Ledbury on Monday and Wednesday mornings from 9.15am and always welcomes new members. Bernice Tweedale, who only recently stepped down as Secretary of the club, won the inaugural singles championship. She continues to enjoy the weekly meetings and represents the Club in Herefordshire League games.
THE BIG DRAW AT BLUE GINGER GALLERY Pictures from the children’s illustrator Jackie Morris are among the items being auctioned in Cradley on 25th October as part of the Big Draw. The annual event encourages everyone from artists to school children to create their own artwork on a postcard size piece of card, which is then auctioned to raise money for Acorns Children’s Hospice. The Big Draw runs throughout October at Blue Ginger Gallery and the theme this year is ‘Every Picture Tells a Story’. green fingers Down at Caves Folly Nursery in Colwall, Bridget has advice on the best ways to enjoy autumn colour in your garden. As usual autumn is suddenly upon us and we have only just started enjoying summer! The colours this year are spectacular, helped by the dry summer and cool nights. The range and intensity of the colours is greatly influenced by the weather. Low temperatures destroy chlorophyll and if it stays above freezing, it promotes the formation of anthocyanins (colour pigments). Dry weather, by increasing sugar concentration in sap, also increases the amount of anthocyanin. So the brightest colours are produced when bright sunny days are followed by cool dry nights. Maples are probably one of the most varied and spectacular Genus of trees. The field maples (Acer campestre) in our hedges are one of the first signs of autumn colour in the countryside. The many cultivars of japanese maples can provide almost every shade of yellow through to scarlet. There are so many varieties to suit all sizes of garden. Many of the acers I grow are in containers so that they can be transported to use at flower shows. Last year I retired one of them into the garden after 20 happy years in a pot! One of my favourite trees for colour is the scarlet oak (Quercus Coccineus). The beautifully cut

leaves are magnificent as they change from shiny green to marbled red and finally to a brilliant scarlet. It is important to continue enjoying the garden through the autumn and winter as there is such a wide selection of late flowering perennials and bulbs to enjoy. Many perennial plants hang on until the first hard frosts including Asters, Helianthus, Schizostylis (Hesperantha),Verbena and Salvia. Grasses such as Panicum and Miscanthus can provide shape and structure to a border and look spectacular when covered in cobwebs and frost. Cyclamen Hederifolium provides blocks of colour under trees and in the corner of a shady border. When the seed heads have been eaten by the birds and the stems have rotted down it’s time to cut back perennials and add mulch for the winter. Be careful not to make the garden too tidy, leave areas that can rot down naturally and piles of leaves for any hibernating creatures such as hedgehogs. Now is the time to buy and plant spring bulbs. Plant them as soon as you can so that they can make strong roots to help them through the winter. Move any half hardy plants such as Salvia or Pelagoniums into a light frost free place for the winter. In the kitchen garden it is time to finish any harvesting and store produce for the winter. Apples and Pears can be picked and stored in a frost free shed or garage, some varieties such as Bramleys and Pippins will last for months, through to New Year. Clear the soil in the vegetable garden of any diseased leaves and perennial weeds and add a mulch of organic composted manure. This can be left overwinter for the worms and frost to break down ready to plant into again in the spring.

Pumpkin Risotto
Serves 2
A lovely warming risotto making using of brightly coloured pumpkin or squash. Cooked with local cider.
Ingredients
1. Add the bouillon powder to the boiling water to make a stock, and then place on a low heat. 2. Heat the oil in a large pan. Sauté the onion, garlic and pumpkin/squash and cook until it starts to brown. 3. Add the rice and stir until coated in oil then add the cider and saffron cook for 5 minutes. Add a ladleful of stock and stir. Add the spinach. 4. Cook on a medium heat, stirring frequently, adding more stock as required. 5. When the rice is cooked, remove the pan from the heat, season and top with roasted pumpkin seeds to serve.

Now, Ann and Derek Carver, both in their 70s, will be talking about their recent trip to Cambodia at a charity evening in Cradley. Ann tells us more.

Our talk on Cambodia contains many highlights, including our trip to Angkor Wat, an ancient temple complex. It was spectacular but probably the most touristy part of the trip. Another sombre reminder of the country’s more recent past was a visit to the Killing Fields, some of the many mass graves of victims of the Khmer Rouge. We found the people in Cambodia very friendly and welcoming. Travelling around was very easy, from buses to tuk-tuks to boats, we went all over the place. There would often be very few Europeans in town but we don’t worry too much about our safety.

itting in a circle, tonight’s dancers listen as Jane Horton explains the rules – or rather, explains there are no rules. ‘We’re constantly told what to do in daily life so this is a space to break free.’ With no further ado, the lights are lowered and the music begins. Over the next two hours the pace of the music regularly changes and the dancers are left do as they feel, whether that’s energetic movement, a gentle sway or time out to relax among the scatter cushions. Towards the end the pace slows, with a slow chillout and then stillness as the session draws to a close. As well as participants from the local area, some have travelled from as far away as Ludlow. ‘I heard about this from a friend’ says Claire who has travelled from Ross, ‘and I now come
regularly. It’s a great end to the working week!’ The music takes in many genres from dance to jazz, blues, world music and a lot more. ‘It can be slow, upbeat, wild or relaxed’ says Jane, ‘and will move your body and stir your soul.’ Jane holds Barefoots on a ‘working in the gift’ basis, a way of doing business based on trust. The evenings are a gift to you and you are free to choose how much money you gift her in return. Barefoot Dance takes place on the first Friday of each month from 7.30pm at Wellington Heath Memorial Hall. The next sessions are due on 2nd October and 4th November but please check before coming. paul whittaker and music & the deaf
Paul Whittaker was born with hearing loss and has been profoundly deaf since childhood. Since then he’s built a career as a professional musician and is founder of the charity Music and The Deaf, which uses music to enrich the lives of people with hearing loss. In 2007 he was awarded an OBE for Services to Music, and this October he’s giving a talk in Mathon. Here, he tells us more about his work.
How and when did Music and The Deaf come about? I started Music and the Deaf in 1988 with the aim of helping deaf people, and those who live and work with them, to enjoy and access music. I’d wanted to do this from the age of 12. I spent three years at Wadham College, Oxford and then did a post-graduate performance diploma at the Royal Northern College of Music before starting the charity. After 27 years I left in April of this year to work as a freelance.
What motivated you? I want to encourage any deaf person, of any age and any degree of hearing loss to realise that music is not a closed world to them. It’s also vital to give that same encouragement to parents, family and those who work with deaf people. I started playing the piano at the age of 5, singing in choirs at 7 and playing the organ at 12 and always knew that I wanted to be a musician. Persuading others that this was possible was the challenge!
What are the challenges for people with hearing loss to participate in music? I’m tempted to say the attitudes of hearing people are the biggest barrier. Deafness is very misunderstood and some people have the attitude of ‘give them a hearing aid or a cochlear implant and they will be OK’. That works for some people but certainly not for the majority. There is still this idea that enjoying music is linked to

your ability to hear but it’s actually much more complex than that. Your ears are useful, yes, but we feel music too, perceive the vibrations, sense it through far more than just our ears.
And what are the rewards of your work? Many! I still get the same buzz out of seeing a deaf person play an instrument or enjoy music for the first time as I did 27 years ago when I started working. Seeing deaf people play together, creating and sharing their own music, is a huge thrill and that also provides immense joy and encouragement for parents too. It’s wonderful when deaf adults come up to me and say, ‘You came to my school when I was 8 years old and introduced me to the world of music, and I still enjoy it now. Thank you’. It’s very humbling and inspiring.
Since leaving the charity, what are you up to now? I’m still giving talks, holding workshops, signing at concerts and working with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra. I also develop signed song exams and I finally have the time to play piano again and even have some lessons! king charles III A new play by Mike Bartlett Directed by Rupert Goold with Whitney Mosery Following a sold-out run at the Almeida Theatre and a critically acclaimed West End run, the award-winning new play King Charles III will be coming to Malvern Theatres from Monday 2nd to Saturday 7th November. The Queen is dead: after a lifetime of waiting, Prince Charles ascends the throne. A future of power. But how to rule? Mike Bartlett’s play explores the people underneath the crowns, the unwritten rules of our democracy, and the conscience of Britain’s most famous family. Robert Powell will play the role of King Charles alongside Penelope Beaumont, Jennifer Bryden, Richard Glaves, Dominic Jephcott, Lucy Phelps, Ben Righton, Giles Taylor, Parth Thakerar, Tim Treloar, Beatrice Walker and Paul Westwood.
