Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul Papandreou feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people

money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Malvern, Worcester & Hereford areas and Paul is finding that his approach is a major

factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people

I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Editor’s message

Warm greetings! This month we’ve had some extra help. Sophie Cockett from Ledbury wrote our main feature on the Colwall Players. Although still a student she’s busy working towards a possible career in journalism. You can read more about the Players’ forthcoming production on Page 6. It is that time of the year when the weather turns, days get shorter and the long winter is ahead of us. Luckily there is plenty going on locally to enjoy the Autumn in style. And do remember, the magazine is only part of what we do. We also have a busy website where you’ll find lots more ideas for activities and entertainment. Have a look at allaboutmalvernhills.com today! Enjoy the read.

All About West of the Hills is distributed to 7,000 homes and businesses.

Main feature

the Colwall Players

are returning By Sophie Cockett The stage is set, lines have been learned and tickets are on sale. Once again the Colwall Players are ready to step out from behind the wings and into the limelight for their latest production: “A Small Family Business”, a play by Alan Ayckbourn. The Amateur Dramatic Society from Colwall aims to put on three shows a year, which are chosen to entertain. Many a comedy and “who-dunnit” have been produced since the Society started, but the group are not scared off by more serious, thought provoking drama, either. Past triumphs include last year’s “Mammals” by Amelia Bulmore, described by committee member Nigel Turner as a “challenging play”, along with “Table Manners” and “Frankenstein the Pantomime”. The shows are never huge, but the “mix of crowd pleasers and more challenging plays” attract beaming audiences from Colwall and the surrounding area. The Society’s members love to perform their work to audiences of up to 120 people in the familiar surroundings of Colwall Village Hall. One or two productions have been taken “on tour” in the past, but the village hall has been their home for over 30 years, and this is where they can often be found running through their lines, rehearsing and performing. Their new production, ‘A Small Family Business’ runs from the 31st October until 2nd November and promises to be a great night out. ‘It has a very wide appeal’ says Nigel Turner, ‘and we hope to attract everyone from teenagers through to OAPs. It’s not your typical pre-Christmas pantomime-style play of course, but it’s still a comedy promising lots of laughs.’

6

Originally ‘A Small Family Business’ was written in 1987 and premièred the same year at the National Theatre in London. After being reviewed very positively, it was voted by the Evening Standard newspaper as the best play of the year and went on to entertain audiences everywhere. The script has been revived many times since then, most recently in 2011. It is essentially a morality play, which shows that money corrupts everyone, even those who attempt to be honest in their dealings. One of the main characters, Jack McCracken is a businessman, happily married and successful. At the beginning of the play, the audience see him proudly accepting responsibility for the family firm, and we soon learn that his philosophy is to conduct all of his forthcoming business dealings with trust. After all, open and honest relationships have always been part of his family life. Things take a turn for the worse when Jack’s daughter is caught shoplifting, and the family business is exposed

as being corrupt. It seems things are no longer looking so rosy for Jack! His morals and high ideals are challenged, and as the play reaches its jaw dropping climax, he is faced with family corruption and a battle between private and public integrity. The story is sure to have you on the edge of your seat until the very end. The Colwall Players interpretation is directed by Andy Howie, who usually takes this slot every year due to his ‘flair for comedy’. He has directed ‘Table Manners’ and ‘Bedroom Farce’ in the past, so if you loved those then you are guaranteed to love this one too. As well as the three days when the play runs for the general public, a special performance is being put on for the members of the Colwall Rotary Club on the 30th October This performance is offered to the club’s members as a show and a dinner, and money raised from the ticket sales will go straight to a charity of the

club’s choice. According to Nigel Turner, they are a “large, cheerful audience” and it’s always a great evening. If this article has tickled your fancy, and you’re interested in becoming a member of the Colwall Players, then there’s a role among the players for everyone. Visit their website, www.colwallplayers. org.uk where you will find information about the society, future performances, and most importantly, membership details. The best part is that subscription costs are low at only £5 a year. This gives you the chance to either take to the stage, work behind the scenes, or even just enjoy the many social events which the group hold once a month. So for now, it’s time to say ‘break a leg’ to the cast of ‘A Small Family Business’, it promises to be a memorable production and we can’t wait to see it!

A Small Family Business by The Colwall Players is at Colwall Village Hall on Thursday 31st October, Friday 1st & Saturday 2nd November 2013 Tickets are available from the Colwall office of John Goodwin Estate Agents on Walwyn Road, or by calling (01684) 540300. Tickets are £8 / £5 (under 16) To advertise please call: Tina on 07952 591031 or email tina@allabout-local.com

Feature

Green Fingers At Caves Folly Nursery in Colwall, Bridget is tidying the garden and enjoying some later bloomers.

www.cavesfolly.com 01684 540631 What an amazing summer we have had, the fruit is so abundant that branches are breaking under the weight! Autumn is a stunning season as well as being such a busy time in the garden and on the nursery. Don’t be in too much of a rush to dead head all those perennials and sweep up all those leaves, as these untidy looking plants are a vital source of bedding and food for wildlife which will help increase their chances of surviving winter. There are lots of late flowering plants that will provide colour and food for insects right up to December. Aster varieties are available in a huge array of sizes and colours, flowering from July through to the first hard frosts. Rudebeckia, Trycirtis, Helianthus, Heleopsis, Helenium, Sedum, Ligularia, Penstemon, Salvia, Perovskia and Bidens are all late flowering perennials. Trees and Shrubs are also important for providing shelter and food for wildlife. Trees such as Birch

10

with flaking bark will act as overwintering homes to many insects, which in turn provide a handy natural bird table for birds such as the Tit family. Trees such as Corylus, Malus, Rowan and Crataegus provide nuts and berries for birds such as Blackbirds, Finch, Redwings and Fieldfares. These autumn feasts provide the birds with essential food to build up their energy reserves for winter. If you are feeding the birds in your garden switch the food you provide from proteinrich, such as nuts, to high-energy foods such as fat balls which will help birds build energy reserves for long migrations or winter survival. A recent study found that honeybees rely on ivy during the autumn months. Up to 89% of the pollen they collect is from ivy’s tiny green flowers, seldom noticed by gardeners. Where possible, allow mature ivy to flourish in your garden, especially in amongst hedgerows and on tree trunks. Enjoy your autumn!

All About...

the Open Air Photographic Exhibition You may have noticed a series of beautiful photographs on display in the centre of Malvern recently.

‘Malvern - In and Around’ is an outdoor exhibition of views of the area taken by members of the Beacon Camera Club. Thirty large prints are on display along Church Walk and outside Waitrose Supermarket. Members of the public are being asked to vote for their favourite image by texting from their mobile phone, with a winner chosen towards the end of October. Among the images are iconic Malvern buildings such as the medieval Priory. There are amazing shots of the Hills in all seasons of the year, and stunning wildlife photography, sports photographs as well as pictures from events like last year’s Jubilee Celebrations. The idea behind the outdoor exhibition is to bring something different to the town centre, and has been organised with the help of Pulse Great Malvern, a project to bring more events to the town centre. “The aim is to encourage Waitrose shoppers to explore further, and discover our beautiful Town centre, ‘ says Anna Brook from Pulse, ‘and we are grateful for the support of their Branch Manager Scott Whitaker in allowing this event to happen. This is inspired by open air exhibitions in cities such as Bristol

and Birmingham, and we hope it will draw in a new audience, and show that Malvern can do something unexpected!” ‘Our Club is proud to be involved with this imaginative idea’ says Trevor Bell from The Beacon Camera Club. ‘We are also delighted that the skill and work of our members will be seen and appreciated by a wide audience in this unusual setting.’

The Beacon Camera Club The Beacon Camera Club meets on Thursday evenings in the Malvern Vale Community Centre. As well as sharing ideas and learning from other members, the club welcomes guest presenters at most Club evenings to speak on a wide variety of subjects and genres. Photographic competitions are held regularly throughout the year, and a mentoring scheme operates whereby those with greater skill or knowledge help those members who are keen to learn. For more information speak to Trevor Bell on 07425 141152 or visit the Camera Club’s website www.beaconcameraclub.co.uk

Well-Being

clearing space for creativity By Satya Robyn from Malvern We all need to have a creative outlet - a window, a space - so we don’t lose track of ourselves. ~ Norman Fischer Gardening, baking, drawing, dancing, writing, taking photos of the Malvern Hills… do you have any creative hobbies? Have you been thinking of taking up something creative? Do you give yourself enough time to be creative? Like most people I have lots of responsibilities in addition to being a writer. Sometimes I find it difficult to find the time to focus on my writing. Whenever I feel short of time, the writing seems to be the first thing to go. Something I’ve learnt over the years is how important it is to clear space for my writing. There’s always a huge list of ‘things to do’, threatening to push it out. My writing has only survived because I’ve learnt to fiercely protect it. If you also struggle with dedicating time to creativity, the following ideas will help you look at how you can clear space for yourself. One: Make a commitment - Before you go any further, think about why you want to clear space in the first place. How serious are you about your art? What does it give you? What are your goals? How much energy can you invest? If decided that it is important to you, then now is the time to make a formal commitment. You might want to have some fun with this and see it as a marriage – decide that you’re going to stick with your creativity in sickness and in health. Make this commitment public if you can – let your friends and family know how serious you are, start speaking about your creative work with pride. Honour your art and the artist in yourself. Two: Feed yourself - My own muse is needing plenty of feeding. This is an ongoing process and it needs different types of food depending on where I am in the process. Some of this food is immersing myself in other writer’s work, exploring different art forms (seeing good films, going to exhibitions), spending time alone with nature,

24

speaking with writer colleagues, attending writing festivals and writing a regular journal. Write your own list and dedicate some time each week to feeding your artist. If you do this, ideas will start appearing like tiny green shoots. Make sure you have a notebook handy at all times so you can jot/sketch these ideas down and use them in your work. Three: Turn up at the page - Here’s the important bit! I’m borrowing this phrase from Julia Cameron’s book, The Artists Way. She encourages artists to ‘turn up at the page’. It’s not enough that you work ‘when inspiration strikes’ – you need to be able to sit down and get on with it whether you’re in the mood or not. Practise this by booking time into your diary – start with ten minutes or half an hour. Spend this time on your art without fail. If you can’t get into your painting, then read what someone else thought about painting instead. If you can’t concentrate on the reading, then go for a walk and think about what you’re stuck on. Practise becoming disciplined. Four: Get supported - Being creative can be lonely, especially if your art involves you working by yourself. I’ve found that a support network is extremely important to keep me going. It can also be an important source of feedback. There are lots of different places to find your support network. There are often local classes or groups for writing, painting etc. The internet can be a fantastic resource. Or ask your friends if they know any artists, get in touch and ask them out for a coffee. Accept and give help. Have fun!

Feature

Ann & Derek’s Travels Ann and Derek Carver from Cradley enjoy an active retirement. One of their favourite pastimes is adventure travel and on 12th October they’ll be giving a talk about their recent trip to Burma.

The country, officially called Myanmar, has only recently become more accessible to foreign visitors, and in autumn last year Ann and Derek went there on a four week visa. ‘The main thing we found difficult is that the country wants to develop fast, but the infrastructure isn’t there’ says Ann. ‘For example, there are no cashpoints and we couldn’t change any money except by using dollar notes at the bank. They were very particular, and wouldn’t accept a dirty note.’ ‘It’s still an inexpensive place for visitors’ continues Ann, ‘and the people are extremely friendly. We had no difficulties while travelling around, although we did have some adventures, and experienced an earthquake during our stay. On another occasion we were in a train and a couple of hours after leaving Rangoon it stopped for no obvious reason. After asking about our unscheduled stop, we were told it was to retrieve a carriage which had become uncoupled from the rest of the train!’

until they are in the country itself. ‘At most hotels we ask the staff to call ahead and book our next accommodation, which generally works very well. However, for a trip to the Golden Rock (a religious site) we decided to ring ourselves to book ahead. The hotel staff asked on the phone ‘Are you sure you’re coming?’ and we assured them ‘we’re British, if we say we’re coming, we’ll be there. Unfortunately when we got there, the hotel had double booked our room, and so we had to find somewhere else to stay.’ So far Ann & Derek’s talks have raised around £3,000 for charity, they’ve already book their next trip to Cambodia later this autumn.

Part of Ann and Derek’s philosophy of adventure travel is to remain flexible, and not to book ahead

Ann and Derek Carver’s illustrated talk on their travels in Burma takes place on 12th October, 7.30pm, at Cradley CE Primary School. Tickets cost £12.50 and include a meal. For tickets you can call 01886 880536 or they are available from Harpers Bazaar, Malvern Studios on Cowleigh Road, and the Event Organiser shop on Church Walk, all in Malvern.
