Legal advice

Why is it so important to make a Will? It is easy to put off making a Will because no one wants to think about their demise! We spend our lives working to provide for ourselves and our loved ones. Making a Will ensures that when you die your assets are shared according to your wishes. Everyone should make a Will, but it is even more important if you live with a partner, have children, you own a property or have savings, investments or own a business. Once you have made a Will you should review it regularly to make sure it reflects your wishes, especially if your circumstances change, for example, if you get divorced or have children or grandchildren. Please remember that if you get married after making your Will it will be automatically be revoked, unless you have added some additional wording to prevent this. If you die without making a valid Will, you will have no say in what happens to your estate. Instead the ‘Rules of Intestacy’ will divide your estate in a pre-determined way and this may not be to the people who you wished to benefit. If you would like to make a Will or review your Will please contact Lucy Yeomans at Orme & Slade Solicitors, NatWest Chambers, the Homend, Ledbury, Herefordshire HR8 1AB. 01531 632226, ly@ormeandslade.co.uk

Feature

colwall players Improbable Fiction A

ny aspiring writer thinking of joining a writers’ group may have second thoughts after seeing Improbable Fiction. Alan Ayckbourn’s play takes its title from a line in that play of reversals and wish fulfilment, Twelfth Night. With Improbable Fiction, Ayckbourn has devised a plot as insanely topsy-turvy as Shakespeare’s.

chairman. Let’s pool our ideas, he says, and create a joint work. Oh no, can’t do that, is the stubborn reaction from the non-writing writers. Until – in the best corny tradition of thrillers – a raging storm ensues. A dramatic clap of thunder strikes. And all the various fictions of the wannabe writers spring startlingly and vividly to life.

Twas the week before Christmas and all through the house sat six members of Pendon Writers’ Circle. All suffering the same predicament – writer’s block!

Hold onto your hats as this hilarious comedy zigzags from Victorian melodrama, to 1930’s detective cliff hanger, to extreme science fiction fantasy – with a touch of Sid the Squirrel thrown in! Result? A side-splitting thoroughly bonkers example of what can happen when you let Alan Ayckbourn’s imagination run riot.

Six authors are search of characters, plot, anything, in fact, to overcome writer’s block and stimulate inspiration. Despite the encouragement of the genial chairman, Arnold, each has reached an impasse. The colourful personalities in this circle clash, criticise and encourage, as each describes the progress they haven’t made. Jess writes bodice rippers. Grace creates children’s stories. Vivvi has completed her 6th crime novel – unpublished of course! Clem is a sci-fi fanatic. Brevis is adapting The Pilgrim’s Progress into, wait for it, a musical! “You’ve got your imagination to fall back on haven’t you?” declares Arnold, the group’s

Don’t Pay The Penalty! by Andrew Nash As an accountant, I am frequently asked for tax saving tips and I am always happy to oblige. There is however an old, but true, adage that taxes are compulsory but penalties are voluntary. Whilst many people concentrate their focus on reducing their tax bill, some people forget about the need to comply with HMRC’s rules. It is always distressing to inherit a new client who has either received poor advice or attempted to produce their own accounts and then fallen foul of HMRC rules. This can be an expensive oversight and honesty is always the best policy. So, what are the tips for reducing your tax burden and avoiding penalties? Register with HMRC. If you set up a business you should register with HMRC at your earliest convenience, as you will be liable to pay income tax and national insurance. The absolute deadline is 5th October in the second tax year of your business. Special rules apply to the taxation of opening years and you may find that you pay tax on the profits relating to some months twice. Don’t worry, this is correct and will be offset when you close your business or in other certain circumstances. Keep your eye on your sales. If you are not registered for VAT, you will need to keep a running total of your sales to ensure that you have not exceeded the compulsory registration threshold. If you forget to register you will be liable for the VAT, even if you have not collected it from your customers. Submit your tax return on time. The deadline for online tax returns is midnight 31st January. You must also pay any outstanding tax on this date. You will be liable for an initial penalty of £100 if your submission is late and, in certain circumstances, this can increase by £10 per day. Be careful and take reasonable care. If you make a mistake, either deliberately or carelessly, you may be subject to a penalty from HMRC. Unprompted disclosure of errors can reduce the penalty to zero, in certain circumstances, so it pays to be honest. Andrew is an accountant and runs The Practice Ledbury, 7 The Southend, Ledbury. You can contact him by phoning 01531 631380 or andrew@thepracticeledbury.co.uk

ledbury art society The popular Christmas Exhibition of Ledbury Art Society returns this November. Taking place at The Weavers Gallery on Church Lane, a wide variety of work will be on display, much of it featuring local scenes and subjects. The society’s Chairman Ian Fountaine tells us more.

Monday 20th Tuesday 21st – Friday 24th Saturday 25th

his exhibition is one of the highlights of our year. Our members can submit up to five items each and in total we display around 100 works. Between them, there is quite some talent and we use a cross-section of media from oils and acrylic to watercolour, pastels and sketching.

T

The image on the exhibition poster was created by Colin Harries who worked for many years as an illustrator. Drawing was his vocation and that talent still shines through. Another of our artists is Tony Bateman who published The Ledbury Sketchbook. He creates striking work using pen and wash and his work always sells well. One woman even bought one of his paintings after spotting her own house in it!

At present we have fifty members and new ones are always welcome. We’re a friendly group and the more experienced members give help and friendly advice to the rest of us!

Invariably a lot of the work is sold during the exhibition. We advertise it nationally and people travel from all over the country to attend. Last year we had more than 600 people visit in a week. Some will take away a painting but many more will buy a card. We have a variety on sale, some with a winter theme which always sell well in the run up to Christmas, but there are many others to choose from.

www.ledburyartsociety.blogspot.co.uk

We have a separate exhibition in June of each year and have regular meetings scheduled for this autumn, when we welcome professional artists for talks and demonstrations. At our next meeting on Tuesday 3rd October we welcome Joe Dowden, a professional watercolour artist who specialises in landscapes and seascapes. He has published books, presented on television, exhibited throughout Britain and is known for his work which is full of texture and detail.

The Christmas Exhibition of Ledbury Art Society takes place from Monday 20th to Saturday 25th November - see the poster above for opening times.

Well Being

moving forward In our small town, nestled safely into the side of these ancient hills, the sun is shining. In other parts of the world the weather is not so kind. As I write this people are assessing the damage from two hurricanes that moved through the Caribbean islands and the east coast of the United States. The west coast of the United States is full of smoke from devastating wild fires. Thousands of people in Asia have been displaced as a result of flooding. A few days ago there was an earthquake in South America. The news is not only full of extreme events in the natural world, but of devastation and the potential for devastation caused more directly by human beings. How do we proceed in a world like this? It can be tempting to see these crises in the world as an invitation to respond in some way. There is some wisdom in asking the question, “What does the world want from me?” But asking this question can lead to being overwhelmed or frozen with indecision. Sometimes we see this on a smaller scale when events in our own lives seem to overtake us and we can’t find a way back towards taking positive action. My Buddhist teacher, David Brazier, suggests that a better to question to ask is, “What does reality want from me?” Reality includes what’s happening in the world, or the big events in our own lives. It also includes us. Human beings have strengths and weaknesses. We have some things that we are skilled at offering to other people and the world, some things that are on the edge of our comfort zone, and some things that are impossible for us to offer. When I first moved to Malvern I asked myself this kind of question. I imagined two circles: the first — what the world was calling for; the second — what my skills were. I asked myself what was in the space where these two circles overlapped. Out of this questioning came the first of the courses I teach

30

By Kaspa Thompson in mindfulness meditation. Keeping my interest on the place these circles overlap has led me forward in my life, to other work and projects. It has also taken me through a process of getting to know myself more deeply and of self-acceptance. Asking yourself this question might lead to small actions at first; making a friend of cup of tea, holding the door open for someone or smiling at a neighbour. Perhaps it will lead on to offerings that take a little more time: planting some wildflower seeds in your garden, giving a lift to someone who struggles to get around or choosing to volunteer in your community. Living in this way is deeply satisfying. We take realistic positive action, pointing ourselves in the direction of unfolding goodness, starting from a position of self-empathy and selfacceptance. In this way we grow and flourish. We move towards a place of joy as we make beneficial and sustainable offerings to ourselves and the world.

Gardening

green fingers Down at Caves Folly Nursery in Colwall, Bridget is drawing up a ‘To Do’ list for autumn. What a fabulous summer we have had this year, certainly with plenty of opportunities to be outside enjoying the garden. Autumn is also a great time to be outside, savouring nature’s pallet of colour and making the most of the days before the clocks go back. The urge to tidy everything before the onset of winter is strong, but it is so important for wildlife to leave areas of leaves and overgrown corners of the garden. The creatures that will benefit from these areas such as newts, frogs, toads, beetles and hedgehogs will all be ready to chomp away at those slugs and snails when spring comes around next year. The highlight of my summer has been seeing lots of hedgehogs on our nursery. The campsite is their favourite place, especially where the tents have squashed the grass and there are loads of slugs and worms coming to the surface. There are plenty of jobs to get on with in the garden as we head into autumn. Here are a few ideas. October Flower Garden Sow sweet peas under glass or on a window sill. Lift summer flowering bulbous plants such as gladiolli, canna and dahlias. Store them in a cool and dry place over winter. Cut back herbaceous perennials as they die back. Leave late flowering plants such as grasses, Rudbeckia, Echinacea and Heleniums until the seed heads rot off as the birds will enjoy the seeds. Prune climbing roses.

36

Plant bulbs for early spring colour. Plant winter flowering pansies, violas in containers. October Kitchen Garden Lift and divide rhubarb. Replant into rich soil with manure. Clear away old foliage from strawberries to prevent a build-up of pest and diseases. Plant onion sets and spring cabbage plants. Cover any oriental leaves with fleece if frost is forecast. November Flower Garden Dig out new borders and add soil improver. Divide herbaceous perennials. Cut back plants that have died-back . Beware if having bonfires! Make sure you make a new space to burn and add from the pile - this way you will give hedgehogs a chance to move away. Bulbs, tulips are better planted in November. November Kitchen Garden November is the start of a rest period for the veg. gardener. Cover over any weed areas with a plastic membrane or old carpet and adhere to the ‘no dig’ method. It’s much easier on the back and better for soil creatures and soil structure! Harvest any last crops and store for the winter.

Theatre News

driving miss daisy By Alfred Uhry Presented by Theatre Royal Bath Starring Dame Siân Phillips & Derek Griffiths When elderly widow Daisy Werthan crashes her car one day in 1948, her son hires her a chauffeur, an African-American named Hoke Colburn. Daisy and Hoke’s relationship gets off to a rocky start, but as times change across a 25 year backdrop of prejudice, inequality and civil unrest, a profound and life-altering friendship blossoms in this acclaimed comedy drama. From its landmark off-Broadway production in 1987 to the remarkable success of the 1989 film version, which was the winner of four Academy Awards including Best Picture, Driving Miss Daisy has touched the hearts of millions worldwide. From her multi award-wining performance in I, Claudius to the epic film Dune, from a Tony nominated performance of Marlene on Broadway to Cabaret in the West End, Dame Siân Phillips has enjoyed a dazzling career which spans more than seven decades. RSC actor and legendary children’s show presenter, Derek Griffiths’ numerous West End credits include the original production of Beauty and the Beast in which he originated the role of Lumière and the Child Catcher in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Driving Miss Daisy is set to appear at Malvern Theatres from Monday 20th to Saturday 25th November. Tickets are on sale at the Box Office 01684 892277 and online at malvern-theatres.co.uk
