We’ve got a great selection of inspiring articles in this month’s magazine. Peter Nash & Susanna Byers run a radio production company in West Malvern and they’ve begun collecting the stories of some of the fascinating people who live around here. Ian Butler is a photographer who’s assembled a stunning collection of wildlife photographs. You don’t need to venture far onto the hills to see some beautiful creatures. As always, our aim is to bring you magazine content that’s all about where we live, written by local people. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Allison Maxwell for her health articles that graced our pages since the early days of the magazine. She’s now moved onto pastures new, but taking her place is Fiona Robyn, who this month is encouraging us to get out and enjoy the autumn countryside. Enjoy the Autumn!

wanted to be. There’s so much creativity here and lots to say about the Malvern hills. We’re keeping the podcasts to about ten minutes, short enough to listen to and the download is free. You can listen via our website or download via i-Tunes, if you subscribe to them (again for free), they’ll be downloaded automatically. The website is www.montyfunkpodcast.com Here’s an edited selection of some of the podcasts. Paddy O’Dooley, Violin Maker
Monty Funk is a small radio production company based in West Malvern. As well as making programmes for the BBC, the company also creates podcasts; mini programmes that can be downloaded and listened to on a computer or an MP3 player. They’ve recently started to create podcasts about local artists and craftsmen. Peter Nash from Monty Funk tells us more. As well as our programme making for the BBC and the independent sector, we create a lot of ‘high level’ audio tours for different clients. We’re involved, or have been involved in several really interesting projects, including tours of historic towns and cities, and we’re currently busy producing a podcast about the history of the designer of the Titanic. Since my colleague Susanna Byers joined us, we’ve decided to make a website where you can find all our podcasts in one place. We also wanted to create themes for the material we’ve created; as we’re based in West Malvern we thought we’d start with stories of some of the many creative people who live here. This is partly oral history but its more advanced than that; these are crafted pieces and will remain as a permanent recording of the people who have lived here. Ultimately we hope to find a way of making the podcasts pay for themselves, at the moment we’re funding it entirely and we’re not sure what the business model will be. We have twenty five programmes on there and more are being added all the time. I’ve lived in the area for quite a few years. I moved here after my car broke down in Malvern, I spent the day looking around and decided this was where I
In his workshop, Paddy is busy putting the finishing touches to another instrument. ‘When somebody uses a saw you get a beautiful rhythm, it makes a lovely sound. I use Spruce for the front, you can see the lines of the grain are very close because it grows high in alpine mountains so it grows very slowly, and its very resonant. This part will be the back, its also symmetrical but with a higher neck and this will be the scroll. When you’re making an instrument its got to be functional. I make them for specific people, I build an audio picture of what this person wants and then try to construct a physical object that will allow them to produce the sound they want. Its also got to be beautiful. I was at an exhibition once and an American gentlemen was very interested in my work. He asked ‘Where’s your power tools?’ and I replied ‘There they are!’, waving my hands. He said ‘No come on, you can tell me’ and he just couldn’t believe it! They’re all hand tools and that’s all you need; a saw, a gouge and a scraper, you can make violins very simply. I run an evening class in violin making, because there are such a shortage of opportunities to learn. I think its an obligation to pass my skills on’. Paddy O’Dooley

Podcasts Paul White, Editor of ‘Sound on Sound’ magazine, and collector of guitars ‘This one sounds quite bright and spiky’ says Paul as he strums on one of his many instruments. ‘There are twelve guitars in the studio, another dozen in here, then in the utility are another fourteen, a few more are at my daughter’s house and I have a few tucked under the bed, and more in the cases behind you! There are a few I bought because I like playing them. Others are ones I made, or rescued, or reassembled from parts I bought second-hand. I like doing it, my original career was electronics and I like tinkering, getting something more out of what is a basic piece of equipment. I made the body of this one from swamp ash, a nice American wood used by Fender for a lot of their guitars. This is another one made from a piece of ash, I hollowed out a big chunk to minimise the weight. Making the body is the hard past, assembling the rest is an Paul afternoon’s work. White I’m in a band. We first started playing in the seventies before we got proper jobs, and reconvened a few years later. We have a lot of fun playing in pubs and clubs, its done for fun, there’s no money in it these days, its more like therapy for the inmates of the band!’ Anthony Griffiths, known as ‘Griff’, Artist ‘I guess its in my blood to draw and paint, there’s nothing you can do about it, you either pick up a pencil and sketch and doodle, or you don’t , its something I have no choice with really. I do it because I can’t help it and I love it. I do two different styles of painting. I do oils inspired cornily enough by nature, mainly sunsets as I’m in West Malvern and every time you see it go down
Anthony Griffiths its completely different. The sunsets are infinitely variable so they can never cease to give you something new. The other thing I do is illustration, inspired by social comment, that’s satirical and mostly political. It constantly changes, a lot seems to be inspired by the unfair things happening to people in other parts of the world. oppressive governments and regime change. This picture is called Mad Mickey, its a comment about the Iraq war and the part we played in that. This one is a pen and ink picture about having a bad memory. So its a picture of a bloke with a sieve instead of a head. Its called Sievehead and might have been loosely based on my own rubbish memory! This picture is called Dream Induced by Enforced Repetition. Its about a dream my dad had, he was a plasterer and dreamt he had to plaster an endless wall. Its difficult to make your way as an artist, its very hard unless you get some small pockets of success that might lead to more success. You need a bit of luck really, keep plugging away and you can have a good year. I’ve had a couple of years where I’ve made a bit of money. I’d rather be doing this because I’m not an office kind of person’.

Explore and Enjoy By Fiona Robyn from Malvern Yesterday morning I set out on an eight mile walk from Colwall to Ledbury. There were eight of us in the group and we had sandwiches in our back-packs, ready for a day away from the hustle and bustle of our lives. I’m not the fittest of people. I’m still getting used to walking from the bottom of Church Street to the top, it never gets any easier! Ahead of the eight mile ramble, I was more than a bit apprehensive! I needn’t have worried; we had a wonderful day. We passed through harvested fields, the cut stalks a beautiful pale green. We admired cottage gardens in glorious bloom along the country roads. We watched butterflies sipping at the flowers that lined our route. We ate our lunch at the very top of Oyster Hill, with impressive panoramic views, following an exhausting climb. I often feel happier and healthier after I’ve spent time outside. But our lives can get hectic, and we can forget to appreciate the beauty on our doorsteps. We can forget how good it feels to have fresh air in our lungs, and how satisfying it can be to come home again to cake and tea after an invigorating walk through the drizzle! How can we get better at spending more time outside in our beautiful countryside? Here are my tips to entice you out; • Think small. You might not have an hour to spare, but do you have ten minutes? Go into your garden and have a look at the plants, or go out and post that letter. If you only have five minutes, stand at the window and watch the shapes of the clouds.
All About our new wellbeing writer Fiona: Fiona Robyn lives on the north side of the hills with her husband, Kaspa and their cat, Fatty. She works as a therapist in private practice, and she also writes novels and runs writing e-courses. She runs a local Buddhist group with her husband at The Wheel of Life. She’s writing a new well-being column to help you enjoy life and engage with the world around you. You can find out more about her therapy practice at www.create-space.org, and her writing at www.writingourwayhome.com.
• Phone a friend. Arrange to meet a friend or two for a walk on the hills or through the woods. Once you’re committed to a walk its harder to back out. In any case it can be enjoyable to share your outdoor experience with somebody else. • Get creative. Take your camera with you (you might even have one on your phone) or take a notebook so you can sketch what you see or write some notes. • Find a favourite spot – by a stream, or a bench with a beautiful view, and visit it regularly. Introduce it to your friends. Notice how it changes with the seasons. • Come to your senses. Keep your ears open and see what birdsong you can hear. Smell the flowers. Touch that silvery bark. See the blue of that harebell. • Learn curiosity. Take your children or your dog (or borrow someone else’s!) and watch how they interact with the environment. Let some of their excitement rub off on you. My legs are aching today and I’ve got blisters on my feet, but I’m also full of fresh air and memories. I hope you enjoy your own explorations!
Fiona Robyn is a counsellor in private practice in North Malvern: www.create-space.org. She runs ‘Listening to the Other’ courses based on Buddhist psychology with her husband – see www.writingourwayhome.com (Malvern) for more information.

Your questions answered: After 20 years in practice and over 50,000 treatments I have seen many interesting cases.
Topic of the month: Intra Muscular Stimulation (IMS). Could it help your pain? “Acupuncture works”. A bold statement in some people’s eyes. However it is a fact that the World Health Organization recognizes acupuncture as an effective treatment for many conditions, not least musculo-skeletal pain such as back pain, neck pain, headache, sciatica and tennis elbow. IMS is a treatment closely related to acupuncture that was developed in Canada in the 1970s.
How does it work?
Strangely about 20% of people do not respond to acupuncture. However some patients who have not responded to traditional acupuncture may respond to IMS. Many pains in the body are caused by muscle shortening and tightening due to malfunction of the nerves that supply them. This is myo-fascial pain. Speckled Wood
Wildlife on the Malvern Hills
Autumn is a fantastic time of year with an explosion of colourful leaves creating breath taking golden vistas around the Malvern Hills. October and November is a time for change with many species starting to stock up extra food ready for hibernation while others migrate to warmer climes. Even at this time of year there is still a lot to be seen on the Malvern Hills.
BUTTERFLIES
Although most butterflies are now in the egg or caterpillar stage of their lifecycle, some adults can still be found in October. On the warmest days, species such as Small Copper, Small Heath and Speckled Wood can be found until the first frosts seal their fate. The British Camp is one of my personal favourite locations to spot these species at this time of year.
Small Copper
THRUSHES
Fieldfare Ring Ouzel
Red Deer
The Malvern Hills host a variety of thrush species during the autumn migration. Redwing and Fieldfare migrate from their breeding grounds in Scandinavia to spend the winter here in the UK. In contrast to this, the rare Ring Ouzel migrates from its breeding grounds in the UK to winter in southern Spain and north-west Africa. Gorging themselves on the red berries of the hawthorn and rowan trees, small groups of thrushes can be seen on early morning walks around the eastern slopes of North Hill.
RED DEER
October and November is a fantastic time to see Red Deer as their breeding season begins. Eastnor Deer Park, located in the south-west of the hills, is home to many red deer where males can be heard bellowing to demonstrate their dominance to other deer. This is the start of the annual deer rut where the male deer compete in antler clashing battles to secure a harem of females.
Other things to note…
Listen out for Tawny owls… Mushrooms and toadstools in the woods… More birds on your bird feeders … To see more images, subscribe to his newsletter, or for more information on guided tours on the Malvern Hills, please visit Ian’s website at www.ianbutlerphotography.co.uk

All About... ...The Dance Club The Malvern Scottish Dancing Club began life more than 60 years ago and today is still going strong. The Club’s President Sue Sadler tells us more.
What are the origins of the club?
It was started by a group of young Scotsmen towards the end of the Second World War. They had been brought to Malvern to work at the Radar Establishment and obviously missed the music and dancing of their homeland. At first only those of Scottish birth could join, but this soon changed and now the majority of our members are not Scottish but enjoy the music and dancing.
IIt sdoesn’t Scottish Dancing difficult? take long to learn enough moves to allow you to join in, but it will take a little bit longer to become an experienced dancer. Anybody who can jog gently will be able to do it, and with the current emphasis on keeping active, Scottish Country Dancing is a great way to get exercise for the brain and the body. People sometimes muddle it up with Highland Dancing, jumping over swords, which of course its not!
D o you welcome beginners? We’re a very supportive club, and start each evening
with a Beginners session for the first 45 minutes. The beginners can then stay on to try some easier dances for the first half of the main club session. After 9.15pm we move on to more difficult dances. When I began I quickly found it very enjoyable. I had learned a tiny bit of Scottish Country Dancing at school, and took it up again after the death of my husband. We get new members every year. To encourage people to join we sometimes put on beginner’s sessions, and we recently put on several at the library in Upton, for people to try it out. We’re currently preparing a website
to give more information for people who might be interested in coming for the first time.
It also sounds like a good social activity?
It is very sociable and we’re a very friendly club. All sorts of people take part and our members range in age from those with young children up to people in their eighties. I think the main reason people take part is not only for the exercise but also because of the sociability. Another advantage is that you can attend by yourself, without having to bring a dance partner, because you change partners with every new dance.
H ow do you learn the dances? New dances are written every year and there are
thousands in total, so there’s always something new to learn. We perform a mix of the old, which have gone on for a very long time, but we also try out new ones and if we like them then we we carry it on. We find new dances in a variety of ways; The Royal Scottish Country Dance Society publishes some of them. Also, most clubs put on a dance which we visit. If we visit others and find a dance we like then we keep it and continue to perform it for ourselves. Each Scottish Country Dance group has its favourites and we borrow them from each other.
Do you ever put on
performances for the public?
Not as such, we don’t describe ourselves as a demonstration group. However, each year we go to a Charity Haggis Supper put on at Colwall Village Hall in aid of Save the Children. A small group of our more experienced dancers always make an effort to put on a performance for that.
Malvern Scottish Dancing Club meets on Thursday evenings between 7.15pm & 10.15pm, in the Hall at Holy Trinity Church. They run Beginners classes throughout the autumn and winter. For more information please contact Liz Baker the Secretary on 01684 892125.

Christmas Decoration Trends By Jane Knowles, owner of Just So
This will be my tenth year buying Christmas Decorations and Gifts for Just So. Through those ten years I have always been excited when I attend the big Gift Fair at the NEC in early February and I see the different trends and colour schemes designed for the next Christmas and I get to choose the decorations I will stock. I have seen a number of trends over the years; from minimalist black and silver, to jewelled coloured Peacock feathers and chubby gold cherubs to name a few. I love it when my customers come and carefully choose their selection of new decorations to add to their family’s treasure trove of loved decorations that they have collected over the years. So what is ‘hot’ and ‘on trend’ this year? Well, because it has been a tough year for most of us with economic doom and gloom hitting the headlines constantly, Christmas Decorations believe it or not will reflect that need for comfort in troubled times. They do this by revisiting ‘Christmas Past’. Taking us back to our childhoods when life at least appeared simpler and also creating warm secure Christmas memories for our own children. Decorations therefore have a home spun, hand-made quality. Traditional
Just So
bright berry reds, deep yew tree green and sparkling snow white are popular and this is reflected in candles and spicy scents. Texture is very important, so knitted fabrics, buttons and bows are on many decorations. For example we have some gorgeously simple tea-light holders that appear as if they have been knitted but are in fact made of porcelain so the light softly glows through. However, although traditional in nature many of the decorations have been given an up to date twist such as our painted glass baubles in the shape of cute little cup cakes. Making things yourself is also popular so that is why we stock coloured felts and pretty ribbons. Personalising decorations and presents is also an important trend, not buying things that are too grand but choosing things that are just right and adding that personal touch. Something a bit quirky and different such as our mini fluffy owls will also be a hit and will raise a smile. Smiling Santas, happy Gingerbread Men and glittery butterflies are all designed so that we can create a wonderfully cosy and warm atmosphere to enjoy Christmas with our family and friends and make it a time where the true message of Christmas shines through.

Devised by Reaction Theatre Makers and written and directed by Tiffany Hosking ‘The Slip’ is a story about the human condition. Zoe's husband Liam finds his wife's erratic behaviour increasingly difficult but when he suggests a trip to the cinema all manner of strangeness begins to unfold. ‘The Slip’ takes you from egg and chips to the edge of time and back again... Confusion, twists and mental turmoil are expertly and imaginatively depicted by the performers whilst choreographed movement helps to create the play’s hazy time zones to great effect. The physical creativity of this troupe is a delight and joy to witness! ‘A compelling, inventive and wholly engaging piece of theatre. The Slip will enthral and delight. Funny, beautiful and sad don’t let it pass you by…’ Reaction has a policy to provide 1 in 7 of their performances for free. They have chosen Malvern Youth Centre to host ‘The Slip’ on the 19th November at 8pm thereby helping to provide accessible theatre for all. The Slip is produced by Versatile Arts and funded by the Arts Council England. Please mention All About Magazines when responding to adverts
