Advice

At Last, The Shackles Are Released By Independent Financial Advisor Rob Weale from Colwall The Budget earlier this year brought good news for savers and investors, coupled with the biggest shake up of pensions for decades. As a result we are faced with many new options for retirement income, some of which I would like to outline here. By far the biggest shock in the budget, albeit a positive one, is the relaxation of rules around taking your pension income. You will be free to spend your hard earned and saved cash as you see fit, whether it will mean encashing the whole fund, drawing an income at a level to suit you, or seeking out an appropriate annuity. Of course there is a sting in the tail, any withdrawals will be subject to tax at your marginal rate, a penalty of up to 45% in some cases, so never has it been more important to seek specialist independent advice. Never has Pension Saving been more attractive When you consider the tax relief you receive when paying into your pension, and couple that with the relaxed rules that will apply when the fund is called upon to provide an income and/ or lump sum, there is now no excuse for not saving into this most effective, efficient and highly lucrative tax wrapper. Believe me when I say, I have never been a lover of personal pension plans but all my reasons for seeking an alternative method are now defunct, this is by far the best way to save for later life. With greater freedom comes greater responsibility Whilst the headline is great, never has there been more importance placed on ensuring you receive independent financial advice in regard your pensions and investments. With so many choices, so many pitfalls and dangers, expensive mistakes are easy to make. You need to receive the right advice at the right time and capitalise

Rob Weale is a founding partner at Smith Weale Associates. The article is based on our interpretation of the Budget, when the details are confirmed, our understanding could change. Please remember, taking money out of a pension will impact on standards of living in retirement. We can help

on changes that have been introduced to put you in control, but also to ensure you shoulder the responsibility. New rules for smaller pensions: You are now able to cash-in small pension pots worth up to £10,000, a rise in the threshold from a pitiful £2,000. The number of small pots that can be taken as lump sums will also be increased from two to three. Drawdown changes: Up until April 2015 pension savings are more accessible with the capped drawdown limits increasing to allow savers to access 150% of what they could have received with an equivalent annuity. This is up from 120%. These rules are an interim measure until the full change takes place. Relaxation of flexible drawdown rules: Wealthier retirees are not bound by the same rules when it comes to accessing their pension fund and do not have to stick to the capped drawdown limits. Currently to qualify you need to demonstrate a secure pension income of £20,000 a year. This has now been reduced to £12,000. Death taxes on pensions to be reduced: (subject to approval) Once you have started taking an income from a drawdown plan any remaining funds when you die are currently taxed at a punitive 55%. George Osborne confirmed that would be reduced and is more likely to be in line with Inheritance tax although this is still to be confirmed.

Cradley feature

Herefordshire Art Week 6 - 14 September

Sitting in his workshop, with the door open and summer sunlight flooding in, Mike Abbott is patiently planing slithers of wood from a piece of ash. His finished chairs sell for up to £500 each, each one hand-crafted using traditional methods. Those traditional skills were at risk of dying out, until a revivial in green woodworking of which Mike was at the forefront. ‘I suppose I would describe myself as a pioneer’ he says, ‘I’ve been doing it now for 29 years. Green woodworking struggled on through the Second World War and petered out in the 1950s; people had written books on the subject but there were gaps in the knowledge, which I spent five years experimenting with and re-learning.’ With three books on the subject to his name, Mike teaches around eighty people a year to make their own chair, with courses in Herefordshire for groups of around eight people. Part of the reason Mike ended up here is the work of Philip Clissett, a chairmaker in Bosbury more than a century ago. ‘Herefordshire has some of the best ash in the country for making chairs’ says Mike. ‘A bit like Henry Ford, I like to say you can use any wood as long as it’s ash!’ he laughs. ‘It’s good for long springy components such as a chairback in the clissett-style.’ This year for the first time, Mike will be taking part in Herefordshire Art Week and opening the door to his workshop. ‘This is the first time we’ve both exhibited’ says his wife Tamsin, who, as a creator of illustrated stained glass, has taken part many times before. ‘Thanks to Herefordshire Art Week, my business got off the ground’ she continues, ‘it was the first time I sold anything and I also picked up interest from galleries who then carried my work. Eleven years on, and I can’t keep up with the demand.’ Tamsin uses glass that is handmade, coloured and then illustrated with images influenced by the British countryside, folklore and fairytales. Her work sells as far afield as the USA and Australia as well as to local clients. The glass is cut, painted or engraved and then fired, before

14

it is set into a lead frame which is soldered, cemented, polished and cleaned. ‘I usually work on several pieces at a time’ continues Tamsin, whose largest commission to date is a large window in the new Charles Renton Oncology Unit at Hereford County Hospital. The couple each has a workshop at their home, which will be open to visitors every day during Herefordshire Art Week (see page 16). It will be a chance for visitors to watch them at work, learn more about their craft, and perhaps even have a go themselves. Mike will continue making chairs but is planning to end his chair-making courses in two years time. ‘Over the years I must have taught two or three thousand people, some of whom have come back again and again. Herefordshire has a growing reputation for its skilled craftsmen, which is great, and I am pleased to have been part of that revival.’

Ledbury Feature

Ring and Ride Service The Ring and Ride Service run by Community Action Ledbury provides a lifeline to people who would otherwise find it impossible to travel. Sue Herrington is the Ring and Ride Coordinator and tells us more about their service.

What exactly does the Ring and Ride service do? Ring and Ride is a social car service which provides transport for medical appointments and social needs for people of all ages who are either unable to use conventional public services or for whom no such service is available. We cover a large area – as well as Ledbury we run the service in twenty three surrounding parishes.

Community Action Ledbury

Who uses your transport service? Those people who use it say that they don’t know how they would manage to get around without it. The Ring and Ride service enables a lot of elderly individuals to remain independent and in their own homes for longer and supports all ages of the community to remain connected and not to become socially isolated due to a lack of transport. This service costs £15 to join unless you are on means-tested benefit in which case it is £5 and then there is a charge per ride based on distance.

Do you need volunteers to help? With the exception of the part time coordinator this service relies solely on volunteers. The desk volunteers organise the rides and these are carried out by volunteer drivers. We desperately need more volunteer drivers to meet the demand

that we have for the service. Volunteer drivers drive clients to destinations which is a door to door service and they have the opportunity to make a real, significant and meaningful difference in someone’s life who would otherwise be isolated and in need. Volunteers are reimbursed for all the mileage they undertake for the Ring and Ride service.

To contact Ring and Ride please call (01531) 635503 between 9.30am and 12.30pm between Monday and Friday. Alternatively, look at www.caledbury.org.uk

West Malvern feature

West Malvern Arts Festival Dozens of artists and craftsmen will be exhibiting at this year’s West Malvern Arts Festival. It’s a chance to see original work, from local artists, in unusual settings. Friday 15th August from 2-7pm Saturday 16th & Sunday 17th August from 11am – 6pm

The informal settings for art is what makes the festival special. All kinds of places are used, from back gardens to garages and homes, but also Elim College, St James’ Church, West Malvern Primary School, and the pub garden at The Brewers Arms. It’s the fifth year for the festival, which is based on a similar event at St Ceneri Le Gerei in southern Normandy, France. ‘We try to be as inclusive as possible with free entry for both the public and exhibitors’ says Laurie Gregory, who started the festival in West Malvern. On show and for sale is a wide variety of work ranging from sculpture to jewellery, glassware to calligraphy as well as paintings, photography and mixed media. As well as highly experienced artists, it’s also a chance to see the work of some who are new to the Festival. ‘We have quite a bit of feedback from new artists who are very grateful for the advice given by fellow artists on showing, mounting or valuing their art’ says Laurie. Some of the artists will take commissions and a proportion of money from any art sold goes to the Malvern Hills Community Foundation, a charity with the long term aim of providing support for local people in need. ‘It’s a lovely atmosphere’ say Dru Bentley, one of the organisers, ‘and last year we had superb views out to the west which were especially loved by people coming from further afield. We had

24

people coming from as far away as Nottingham and Newcastle. Word does get around. One of the best things is that the event is free and is popular because it’s very informal and quite quirky. Very often the artists and craftsmen will be working so you might see a weaver or a silversmith in action. We even had one fellow who was writing tiny script on a single grain of rice, and people were asking him to write their addresses, a message or a prayer.’ During the weekend there will also be live music, a vehicle cavalcade as well as food and drink. ‘It’s a lovely atmosphere’ says Dru, ‘it’s a very friendly event and visitors can be assured of the usual very warm welcome for which West Malvern is renowned.’

You can see more on the festival’s website, www.westmalvernarts.org

Well-Being

taking care in a

busy world As August changes into September we start to feel the first traces of autumn in the air. The nights draw in and the days slowly get cooler. Trees turn from bright summer greens into reds and yellows until the sides of the roads are lined with dried fallen leaves.

By Kaspa Thompson At the same time that the natural world is drawing in on itself and growth is slowing there is a sudden burst of energy in other spheres of life. School is about to begin, new uniforms and stationery need to be bought. Even those of us out of academic life feel the impulse to start something new or reinvigorate our working life, hearing the echo from childhood of our own first days at school. At the same time we begin to anticipate Christmas, complaining about the first adverts on television, wondering if we have to invite the whole family around for lunch on December the 25th and if our pockets are deep enough for everything on our loved one’s wish lists. I sometimes feel there is a tension between these two impulses: on the one hand the quietening down and withdrawing of the natural world, which often seems to trigger some deep hibernation instinct in people, and on the other hand the excitement and pressure of new beginnings and the build-up to the holiday season. Even in springtime when the days are lengthening and the whole world seems bursting with life, new starts can be difficult. They can bring us closer to our learning edges: intellectually as we learn new skills and emotionally as we are taken to (and sometimes beyond) the edge of our comfort zones. How can we take care of ourselves in these situations? How can we make sure that we do not become overstretched and burnt-out, for ourselves and for other’s sake? We need to pay attention to ourselves and to others. We need to look out for the clues that we are becoming too tired, or too challenged.

26

This kind of noticing is difficult in the midst of the business of new projects and of the frenzied world. The more we are caught up in reacting moment to moment, the harder it is to see ourselves and the situation we are in clearly. We thrash around like someone thrown into a pool of water, stirring up silt, muddying what was clear and forgetting that we can stay afloat more easily by lying back and relaxing than by splashing around making great waves. It is important to make some space in our lives to be still, to allow ourselves to relax, and to begin to soften the tension in our mind and bodies. When we have found a moment of stillness or relative quiet we can then ask ourselves, “How am I doing? What’s happening in my life right now? Can I make any changes to make life easier, or better, or do I just need to sit and enjoy this moment of peace?” Making these quiet spaces is especially important as we go into busy times. It may feel selfish to take time for ourselves when the world is asking for so much of us, but these moments in which we can begin to relax and to pay close attention to ourselves and our lives will put us in a much better to position to take care of others, as much as they help us feel better in ourselves.

Colwall Sewing Bee Every Monday evening, a group of women meet in Colwall to sew and create craft items. They recently completed a ‘Sewathon’, making more than a hundred ‘pillowcase’ dresses to send to girls in Malawi. Heidi Smith tells us more.

Our Sewing Bee only started three months ago but is already a success. A friend of mine, Kate, is very crafty and loves sewing and wanted to start a regular group where we could finish the projects we never seem to have the time finish. We decided to use the Community Church because it’s a big space and so is ideal to lay fabric out and work on it. Kate didn’t intend it to only be a sewing group, so we welcome any crafts that people want to undertake. We were sitting chatting and Kate had the idea of turning our sewing into a charity event, so I came home, looked on the internet and found ‘Dress a Girl Around the World’. This is an American christian charity that has sent more than 250,000 dresses to girls in developing countries, but there is also a lady in the UK who represents them. We were going to send our dresses to her but she suggested we sent them directly to a charity, so we chose SALT Malawi, a charity that is supported by Colwall Community Church. The idea of a pillowcase dress is to clothe needy children as cheaply and as quickly as possible. Everybody has spare linen in a cupboard, so it’s a case of turning it into something that can be worn. With a pillowcase you cut the top seam off, cut two little j shapes for the arms, add elastic across the top to gather in and then trim the dress with lace, pockets and buttons.

Our Sewathon took place at Colwall School and we received lots of donations of fabric as well as lots of help from people who came to sew. Some got involved even though they weren’t confident on a sewing machine, we started to make the dresses in stages so more people could get involved. Some parents brought their children to cut ribbon and sew on buttons, while at one point there were 27 people on sewing machines. Everybody was chatting and people brought cakes and it was a really nice day. In the end we made 112 dresses which was beyond our target of 100. We’re currently helping another group to set up a similar event in Ledbury in the near future, and we’d like our own Sewathon to become an annual event. In the meantime, the Colwall Sewing Bee continues every Monday during both school termtime and holidays. We’ve had a few new people come along since the Sewathon which is lovely as we’re making new friends.

If you’d like to find out about us, just come to Colwall Community Church on Mondays at 7.30pm and we’ll make you very welcome.

Garden

Green Fingers Down at Caves Folly Nursery in Colwall, Bridget is enjoying the best of summer.

www.cavesfolly.com 01684 540631 What an amazing summer we have had! We grow thousands of varieties of plants here at Caves Folly Nurseries originating from all over the world, where they require specific soils and climates. Therefore I am always surprised at how adaptable they are when I pot them all in the same compost and subject them to the unpredictable British climate! This summer many of the Mediterranean plants such as Erodium, Lavandula, Artemisia, Oreganum and Cistus have been flowering well, enjoying the long hours of sunlight. South African plants such as Lampanthrus, Osteospermums, Nemesia, Kniphofia and Agapanthus have also enjoyed the sun. If you want to grow these plants, they require a soil that retains a bit of moisture in the summer but is free draining in the winter. If you have a free draining soil add plenty of organic matter to improve the moisture retention. If you have wet soil add equal amounts of organic compost and grit regularly to improve drainage. It is interesting how many of our customers are influenced by television coverage of the RHS shows. At the moment the trend is towards the ‘cultivated wild’ look. Mixed perennials and wild flowers in colourful drifts adorn our screens and inspire us to get out in the garden and experiment with new ideas. But wait, beware, these are show gardens! Many plants are grown individually and placed together for the benefit of winning a medal, many of them do not require the same growing conditions and would not naturally flower at the same time. Trees and shrubs are often imported

34

from abroad where they have been forced into early leaf or flower. If you find it difficult creating continuous interest and colour in the garden try visiting your local nursery every couple of weeks and buy a plant in flower, this way you can’t go wrong! Jobs to do in the garden for August and September: In an Ornamental Garden, take semi-ripe cuttings of half hardy plants such as Erysimum, Salvia, Penstemons and Evergreens such as Rosemary and Lavender. Collect seeds and store for sowing in the Spring. Sow biennials to flower next season. Cut back perennials that have gone over (leave any seed heads suitable for the birds to feed on). Label perennials you need to dig up and divide in winter. Tidy and disinfect the greenhouse ready for overwintering and sowing seeds. Autumn is the time for planting trees, shrubs and new borders. Plan and order ready for planting in October and November. Plant winter containers to establish before the cold weather. In the Kitchen Garden, keep harvesting and feeding tomatoes, peppers and others. Harvest and freeze, preserve as much produce as you can! Harvest plums and damsons, supporting any heavily laden branches. Sow winter salads outside and in the green house. Enjoy the last of the summer but remember that there are an amazing collection of Autumn and Winter plants available to extend the colour and interest in your garden right through to the Spring. A couple of containers full of winter violas can provide a cheery entrance to any abode.

Mathon feature

Saxophone Concert A quartet from The Worcestershire Saxophone Ensemble is performing at Mathon Church on Saturday 20th September. Louisa Davidson, the ensemble’s director, tells us more.

What makes your performances so special?

Photographed by Andy Hockeridge

The saxophone is unique in that it can evoke a choral quality of sound with all the different saxophones from sopranino down to baritone – this makes it particularly suited to the acoustics of many churches. The saxophone can also adapt to a jazz sound without the use of PA systems when played in a good indoor acoustic. We specialise in playing indoor venues with good acoustics and do not perform outdoors or use amplification. This means we do not have to rely on PA equipment, creating a unique ‘live’ music experience.

What will you be playing at your concert in Mathon? Our repertoire explores current saxophone ensemble pieces written or arranged by saxophonists encompassing styles from Baroque to Contemporary. Some are premiere performances and are arranged especially for us to play. At Mathon we will performing as a Quartet and our programme includes pieces written for Saxophone Quartet from Baroque and pieces written for Adolphe Sax inventor of the Saxophone, from a classical style to contemporary Latin, Celtic and Funk pieces written by UK composers.

How many members do you have today, and what is their background? The membership of the ensemble adapts to the changing circumstances of its members, for example starting university or leaving the area. Today we have six members, all female, but that was not intentional! At Mathon the line up is Louisa Davidson on Soprano saxophone, Jackie Harris on Alto, Kate Moroni on Tenor and Sue Sneath on Baritone. When we play as a full ensemble we are joined by our other members Caroline Wood on Soprano/Alto and Mandy Harding on Alto/Tenor. The Quartet are all semi-professional players and we all have Music Degrees, whereas the other members of the Ensemble are all players of Grade 7-8 standard. This, combined with our semi-professional core, creates a high standard to which we all aspire.

38

Are there any opportunities for new members to join? We are currently recruiting players for the bigger group to tackle larger pieces in the repertoire and will be having open sessions in September and October for those who have a minimum standard of Grade 7. We are not for profit and not funded so we rely on a small subscription and small fees for our concerts. If you are interested, please get in touch via email, ensemblesaxophone@googlemail.com

What response do you get from audiences? We have had an excellent response from our audiences who have been surprised at the versatility, quality of the music and the varied style of the music we perform at our concerts. We offer a programme that suits all tastes but also promotes music by lesser known composers and arrangers who need a platform. Tickets for the concert in Mathon on Saturday 20th September are £10, which includes a drink, and are available from Karen Seymour on (01684) 541943. The concert is in aid of Mathon Church Fabric Fund. For more information about the Worcestershire Saxophone Ensemble, see www. worcestershiresaxophone.blogspot.com
