This edition is full of a lot of firsts and new activities. The first charity partnership with BBC Radio Cumbria, our new Garden of Memories in Bitts Park, our first fundraising Colour Runs in Carlisle and Kendal taking place in May, a furniture shop opening in Carlisle and a newly refurbished flat available at the Hospice. It has been a very busy start to 2015. I recently celebrated my first year working at the Hospice. It is an amazing organisation to work for, with so many committed and passionate staff and volunteers providing care and support at a time when it is needed most. Raising the vital funds each year is a big challenge and the support which exists in the community from individuals, groups and businesses is fantastic. The Hospice has such a wide range of supporters, from school children donating their saved pocket money right up to the ÂŁ150,000 raised by the BBC Radio Cumbria Jigsaw Appeal. Every donation we receive is very much appreciated and, through the year long partnership with BBC Radio Cumbria, we have lots of new supporters from across the county wanting to get involved with fundraising. We value feedback from supporters; Page 2 | Hospice News Spring 2015

NEW LEASE OF LIFE

FOR FAMILY FLAT

Being close to a loved one at a difficult time is important and at Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw we are able to make this wish possible for families. The family flat can provide people with a comfortable place to stay when their child is first attending the Children’s Hospice or during the difficult time of end of life care.

During 2014, the Hospice was able to transform the flat to make it a more warm, welcoming and functional environment for families thanks to a significant donation from Dr John Spencer. The flat includes two bedrooms, bathroom, living area and kitchen.

through a local group of ladies who made quilts. She was a junior school teacher at the Quaker School in Carlisle and she believed that it was a privilege to be able to support the Hospice.” “The flat refurbishment is a memorial to her as it was sensible for me to see what was done and what was happening. The name, Holly Bush, is after a 15th Century farmhouse where we used to live near Hesket Newmarket. It is a link to Hilary without personalisation, which is not done at the Hospice.” “A family can stay and be there in the last important hours at what can be a traumatic time for the child and their carers. Hilary’s ability to understand and share the feelings of the children she taught would have enabled her to empathise with a child’s need to have their family around them. I hope that the flat will become an ongoing link between her and the Hospice.”

John explains, “My wife Hilary was interested in and supported the Hospice, by collecting money and

Hundreds of fundraising events; thousands of pounds raised during one incredible charity of the year partnership. Over the last 12 months, individuals, community groups, schools and businesses throughout Cumbria have helped the BBC Radio Cumbria Jigsaw Appeal to create a lasting legacy for the Children’s Hospice.

Belinda Artingstoll, BBC Radio Cumbria’s Jigsaw Appeal Co-ordinator, said “Forming a partnership with a local charity was something we’d been wanting to do for a while but it was also a very new thing for us. We knew, as a county-wide media organisation, we could do a lot in terms of awareness for Jigsaw’s new name and what it had to offer families across Cumbria.” “But would our listeners want to help us raise large sums of money for new outreach services? We needn’t have worried! They have been so supportive and the range of events and the spread of people and organisations holding these events have been truly heart-warming.” At the beginning of the partnership in

Page 4 | Hospice News Spring 2015

January 2014, Jigsaw and BBC Radio Cumbria agreed a fundraising target of £80,000 to fund three life changing projects for the Children’s Hospice. Twelve months later, the target has almost been doubled and the projects have allowed Jigsaw to extend the care, support and activities into the local community and the family home. Janet McGreevy, Jigsaw Clinical Sister, said “The partnership with BBC Radio Cumbria has enabled the staff to offer support within the family home for the parents, and for the children in the form of activities. It has made a real difference seeing the child in their own environment, surrounded by their own toys and equipment. Siblings have joined in with the activities too.” “While staff have provided activities for the child and siblings, parents have taken the opportunity to spend time together as a couple or catch up on household jobs or have done something completely different, which would be difficult to do when caring for their child. For a few hours, the caring responsibility has been shared with staff from Jigsaw.” “This year has just been the start of the outreach services, which we plan to expand over the coming year with the appointment of an outreach worker, who will support families in their day to day concerns and help them to access other services when appropriate.” On Friday 23 January 2015, exactly a year after the Charity of the Year partnership began, Jigsaw and BBC Radio Cumbria celebrated the final day of the Jigsaw

presenters Mike Zeller and Val Armstrong presented their shows from the Children’s Hospice as Jigsaw invited families, James Rennie School and fundraisers to join in the celebrations. Janet concluded, “The support we have received through the success of the BBC Radio Cumbria partnership has been remarkable. The people of Cumbria have taken the children and families who come to Jigsaw to their hearts, and the funds raised have exceeded all expectations.” “The staff at BBC Radio Cumbria have been brilliant. Many Jigsaw staff were not keen to take part in the radio broadcasts at the start of the year, but Belinda and her colleagues put staff at ease and they were soon willing to speak at length about what we do at Jigsaw. Thank you to all involved. An absolutely brilliant year!” The legacy created by the BBC Radio Cumbria Jigsaw Appeal will allow the Children’s Hospice to continue to extend the care, support and activities provided to the families over the coming years. Belinda continued, “The amount raised has exceeded our wildest dreams and I think the whole experience will live long in the memories of everyone at BBC Radio Cumbria”.

At the time of print the total for the BBC Radio Cumbria Jigsaw Appeal is an incredible

LET A LOVED ONE’S MEMORY BLOOM Almost 12 months ago, a team of Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw volunteers, supported by Carlisle City Council, began to develop the former Herb Garden in Bitts Park, Carlisle. From removing all of the plants to preparing the garden in readiness for planting new flowers, the volunteers worked tirelessly as they began to create a beautiful garden. Six months later, on an unfortunately damp and dreary Sunday afternoon in August, members of the local community braved the wet weather and sheltered under their umbrellas at the official opening of the Hospice’s Garden of Memories. Despite the weather, the fantastic atmosphere on the day brought everybody together for a very moving celebration. The special Garden of Memories provides people with a peaceful, calming and colourful environment to remember someone close to their hearts all year round. Katrina Sander, Community and Events Fundraising Manager, said “The fantastic Garden of Memories has provided people with a warm and welcoming place to remember a loved one in the middle of Carlisle. We have tried to ensure that the range of flowers, plants and shrubs will keep the garden colourful and enjoyable throughout the year.” Page 6 | Hospice News Spring 2015

gardens in full bloom and hope the local community will be able to enjoy the colourful and comforting Garden of Memories.

“The Hospice would like to thank Carlisle City Council for very kindly allowing us to create the garden in Bitts Park, by helping to design and maintain the area to such a high standard. The importance of remembering a loved one can never be underestimated and the garden will provide people with a special place to remember.” Since the Hospice unveiled plans for the tranquil gardens, people from throughout the county have helped raise over £16,000. Every loving donation not only allows Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw to maintain the garden, it will help the nurses and doctors to provide care, support and activities to local adults and children with life limiting illnesses.

Katrina continued, “Over the coming months Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw will continue to develop the gardens with the addition of lots of new plants and flowers. We are hoping that the Garden of Memories will become a real focal point in the community as well as an extension of the care, support and compassion provided at the Hospice.” This August the Hospice will celebrate the first anniversary of the opening of the Garden of Memories by Fiona Armstrong and Roxanne Pallett. To mark the occasion we will be hosting a special event in the garden. Full details about the day will be announced in the coming months.

With spring approaching, we are looking forward to seeing the

Deborah Skelton has worked at the Eden Valley Hospice Day Hospice since June 2014. Below she describes her first experiences of the Hospice as both a family member of a patient and as an employee. In the autumn of 2013 I arrived on the Inpatient Unit with my mother; I’d never been to the Hospice before. We arrived in a hot room. My mother was immediately uncomfortable in the intensity of the indoors. A nurse said, “it’s OK Susan, you can have your bed outside if you want to...” She meant it. “When did you last eat?” someone else enquired of me. A cheese sandwich appeared within minutes. I remember the overwhelming feeling of being safe; I could just be a daughter now.

The team in the Day Hospice are fantastic, such a rich mix of staff and volunteers. It is a privilege to work alongside them. Aside from the opportunities for development the Day Hospice has given me, I have also felt and been encouraged to get involved in the wider aspects of Hospice life. This may be through the invitation to represent in various groups or committees, join in with the latest fundraising events, attend a photo shoot or don a wig to raise money and awareness to causes. Sometimes, it really is ‘all in a day’s work!’ So for me, I have experienced on two levels a Hospice that really does take palliative care to a higher level. I am proud to be part of the cloak that wraps itself around those that come through its doors and says, “Hey, we are here and we’ve got you...”.

I did not know at the time but this first impression of Eden Valley Hospice was to be the foundation stone for me choosing to work here. In June 2014 I started work in the Day Hospice. The Day Hospice is an environment where patients with cancer or life limiting illnesses come for support and guidance in living with and coming to terms with their diagnosis. This includes management of their symptoms, out of hospital treatments and time out generally to do and discover whatever it is they need to. The service also provides support to their families and carers.

The care for 1 in 4 people at the Hospice is funded through a Gift in a Will and we are very grateful to everyone who remembers Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw in this way. Last year over ÂŁ900,000 was donated through Gifts in Wills and every gift, however large or small, is vital to support the care of our patients. One very generous gift the Hospice received from a couple, who were both cared for at Eden Valley Hospice, helped fund the wages of one of our nurses. The gentleman used to bring his own particular brand of teabags into the Hospice, as he created his very own home from home environment. To maintain his independence he would potter along to the ward kitchen to make a cup of tea, only letting the staff make his drink when he was too poorly to do so himself. The couple were very grateful for the care they received and wanted to make a gift after they died. Making a Will is easy to do and keeping it up to date is very important to ensure that your wishes are carried out and your loved ones are looked after. If you die without a Will your estate may not be distributed in the way you would have wished. By taking part in the Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw Make a Will Month you can secure the future of your loved ones by receiving a professionally written Will by a participating solicitor in exchange for an affordable donation to the Hospice. Make a Will Month runs throughout April and we are extremely grateful to the participating solicitors who are donating their time free of charge to Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw. For a list of solicitors taking part please call Karen Durden, Legacy Manager, on 01228 817607.

Two 5km runs, almost 500kg of powdered paint and hundreds of pristine white t-shirts. In May, the Hospice will be showering Cumbria in a rainbow of vibrant colours at the very first Cumbria’s Colour Runs, but will you be part of the celebrations? The Hospice’s first 5km Colour Runs will be arriving at Carlisle Racecourse and Jubilee Park, Kendal very soon, as fundraisers shower both locations with a blast of electrifying colours, lots of laughter and entertainment for all of the family. Although the Hospice cannot guarantee glorious sunshine on the day, the Colour Run event promises the most colourful fun you will ever have at a fundraising event. At designated points along the 5km routes, fundraisers will encounter the paint throwing stations where vibrantly coloured powdered paint will be thrown. The paint is made from cornflour and cosmetically tested dyes, which makes it safe to use for the bright fundraising event. Whether people decide to walk, run, skip or conga around the course they will be transformed into a kaleidoscope of colour, louder and brighter than a garish Hawaiian shirt! There is no minimum sponsorship for the Colour Run; all the Hospice asks is that you raise as much money as you can and enjoy the action packed day of fundraising with your friends, family, work colleagues and fellow fundraisers.

Aladdin and Princess Jasmine had one, and now the children and young adults at Jigsaw have their very own magic carpet. Unlike Aladdin’s, this magic carpet cannot fly, but it can help to transport them into a whole new world. The wonderful piece of technology donated by Lifelites charity has allowed the activity coordinators and nurses at Jigsaw to incorporate a brand new element to the children’s daily activities. Jacqueline Jackson, Activity Coordinator, said “We were delighted to be donated this fantastic Magic Carpet by Lifelites, who supply us with amazing computers and laptops every few years.“

Page 12 | Hospice News Spring 2015

“The Magic Carpet is a portable projector where we can choose a programme and it plays onto a plain surface. Our children can really enjoy sensory time. Having the Magic Carpet enables us to link our projects to sensory work, and when a child is too ill to participate in the activity room, we are able to take sessions to their bedroom.” “Siblings will also be able to benefit from this donation, as great football interaction games can also be played.” From playing football to interacting with bubbles, flowers and snow, the Magic Carpet has enhanced the fun and creative activities provided at the Children’s Hospice.

Bereavement is something that happens to us all at some point, and even though it is a sad time, sometimes bereavement can be relatively trouble-free and uncomplicated. Sometimes though, bereavement throws up a lot of confusing and painful emotions which we can struggle to find a way through. Sometimes bereavement can make us feel as though we are “going mad”. That’s where the Counselling and Bereavement Support Team can make a difference. We are a team of volunteers led and trained by Tori Barker Ross who is a qualified and highly experienced counsellor and trainer. Some of the team have counselling qualifications; a few of us are counselling students gaining valuable experience and developing our counselling practice.

ages and from all backgrounds and we all have a cast iron commitment to scrupulous confidentiality. We are trained to listen to individual stories that people have to tell and to help bring a new perspective and understanding; we can help people feel less confused and more confident about their personal situations. Have you noticed that when there’s a problem, everyone has an opinion? When people come for counselling or bereavement support, we let them tell their own story from their own perspective. We don’t tell people how to behave or what they should or should not be doing. We don’t tell people what to think. We allow the space and the time to make sense of what has happened and to face the future with courage.

All of us have counselling skills. We are trained to work with people of all

As well as referrals from Eden Valley Hospice and the wider community, the Counselling and Bereavement Support Team can also support staff and volunteers. Please contact Tori Barker Ross on 01228 810801 for more information. Hospice News Spring 2015 | Page 13

NEW LANDSCAPES NEW ADVENTURES NEW CHALLENGES Every year a small group of Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw fundraisers leave their creature comforts at home to embark on a life changing, fundraising challenge around the world. From reaching the summit of a mountain to cycling around Europe, the Hospice is always amazed at the adventures fundraisers undertake to support the care and activities provided. One of the most popular overseas challenges Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw fundraisers have embarked on over recent years is climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest mountain. Standing at almost 6,000 metres tall, the climb to the summit provides fundraisers with a challenge they will never forget. Last year Lorna Young successfully completed the challenge, “The plan to climb Kilimanjaro came after climbing Mount Toubkal (4,167m) in Morocco. Toubkal was over three days, so we wanted something higher for the next challenge. Kilimanjaro is 5,895m and the trek was over six days. “My friends and I were self funding the trip in the process and I wanted to raise some money for charity. The Hospice was an easy and obvious local choice as they provide an amazing and valuable service and I have friends who have been supported by the Hospice at a time when they have needed it the Page 14 | Hospice News Spring 2015

most. I work for The Riverside Group and one of our much loved colleagues spent their final days there.” “It is an incredible experience to trek a mountain. When you get your first glimpse of Kilimanjaro it gives you a buzz to know you are heading to the summit of it. We were fortunate to have mainly blue sky days and the views were spectacular. However, as soon as the sun went down on an evening the temperature went down with it; it was freezing!” “When you were sitting with an amazing view, enjoying the silence of the mountain, you forgot about the long, cold nights as that just made everything worthwhile.” In 2013, Paul Cookson, former Head of Finance at the Hospice, celebrated his 60th birthday by reaching the summit of Africa’s highest mountain and raised over £7,000 in aid of the Hospice. Paul was joined on the self funded challenge by his four sons and family friends. “Tanzania is such a lovely country; it is such a green country. We left pencils and pens for the school children and gave a

number of football shirts to the children in some of the villages.” “The best part of the climb was once you reached the peaks and also when you get back to the hotel after reaching the top. On day four we walked up Barranco Wall, which is like a cliff face with a zigzag path all the way up the mountain.” “Day five was an arduous day; the previous day we walked for nine hours and only had four hours sleep because the porters came along and shook the snow off the roof of our tents. After being woken up it was a six hour walk to Stella Point and a further hour and a half walk to the top. We were taking six inch steps at a time.”

“Never underestimate the enormity of the challenge which you choose. Make sure you train and prepare properly for it, especially if you are taking on a challenge which takes you to altitude. It is incredibly hard to describe just how difficult it is to breathe normally at high altitude when you are not used to it. Summit day on Kilimanjaro is one of the hardest things I have ever done and it didn’t pass without some tears.” Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has taken part in an overseas challenge and helped to raise so much money. You have all helped to make a difference.

Every individual overseas challenge provides each fundraiser with their own new adventure and set of challenges as they create new memories whilst fundraising in aid of Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw, Cumbria’s Children’s Hospice. Lorna has a little bit of advice for every fundraiser considering undertaking an overseas fundraising challenge; “Do it, go for it, live it, experience it. You can listen to stories from others who have done an overseas challenge but nothing will ever compare to doing one yourself. The feelings, the emotions, the views are all something you will remember forever.”

If an overseas challenge is on your bucket list or you would like to push your fundraising boundaries in aid of Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw, Cumbria’s Children’s Hospice please contact the Fundraising Team on 01228 817613 to find out more. Hospice News Spring 2015 | Page 15

FIRST FURNITURE

SHOP SET TO OPEN The Hospice is delighted to unveil a brand new and exciting retail adventure as Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw open our very first furniture shop, close to Carlisle City Centre. Over the last 18 months the Retail Department have been looking for a suitable location and they believe they have found a prime retail outlet perfect for the new shop, which will stock a range of good quality, usable furniture. Anne Hall, Retail Manager, said “Opening a furniture shop is something we have always aspired to do as it will be a great addition to our current retail set up. We feel it will offer people another way to support

the work of Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw as well as being a huge benefit to the local community.” “The furniture shop will bring with it a range of new volunteering roles. We are looking for people to welcome and assist customers, help move furniture in the shop and possibly up-cycle and restore furniture.” From a few hours to a couple of days a week, people can help make a huge difference by donating their time at the new furniture shop. Volunteering in the Hospice shop will also provide people with the opportunity to learn new skills and share their experiences. Further information about the new furniture shop will be released in the coming weeks, including the official opening day and times.

The Retail Department currently have lots of furniture in storage to stock the shop when it first opens. However, they will be looking for good quality donations to keep the shop well stocked. If you have any items which you would like to donate in the future please contact Anne Hall, Retail Manager, on 01228 817615. If you would like to help the Hospice make a difference by volunteering in the furniture shop please contact Steve Golding, Voluntary Services Manager, on 01228 817658. “IT IS A WIN-WIN-WIN CONCEPT” Last year, two Eden Valley Hospice fundraisers embarked on a new, personal running challenge as they left the Cumbrian fells behind them and headed to the city streets of Newcastle. Carvetii Coffee owners Gareth Kemble and Angharad MacDonald pulled on their running shoes and Hospice vests as they took part in the Great North Run. The half marathon provided Gareth and Angharad with something to focus on as they clocked up the miles in training. Gareth explained, “Our first contact with Eden Valley Hospice came when I was working at Dearham Primary School. A member of staff, Denise Clark, lost her battle to cancer and in her final days had been supported by the Hospice. In memory of Denise, Carvetii Coffee worked with the school children to organise a coffee morning, with the proceeds

being shared between MacMillan and Eden Valley Hospice.” “Any one of us could need support at any stage in our lives, and the fact that a close member of our family is now battling cancer makes our choice and efforts even more worthwhile.” “We are very keen runners, though mostly on the Lakeland fells. Running a business doesn’t allow for much leisure time and sometimes having something to work towards helps maintain our focus. Not only were we able to support a local charity but it also provided us with the challenge we needed to maintain a degree of work/life balance.” “We were slightly apprehensive, not so much about the distance but more of running with so many people. Very different from the solitude of the Lake District fells! It was an amazing day and we thoroughly enjoyed

Page 18 | Hospice News Spring 2015

ourselves – since then our business has grown very quickly, we no longer have that focus and we’re finding it harder to get out onto the fells!” As part of their fundraising for the Great North Run, Gareth and Angharad asked for a donation in return for a cup of coffee at different events around the county. The couple have used this type of fundraising at lots of different events to raise money for many charities, including the Hospice. Gareth continued, “Making a donation in return for a cup of coffee was a concept which evolved from a desire to make our Taste Cumbria stand more exciting. We wanted the public to connect with coffee rather than asking them to pay, we decided to give it away.” “It soon became apparent that people were keen to part with their money so we came up with the idea of asking for a donation in return for a coffee. It really is a win-win-win concept. The member of the public gets a coffee at a ‘price’ they can afford to pay, Eden Valley Hospice get the donations and we continue to build a positive brand image.” “In the past 18 months we’ve supported a number of other charities, both asking for donations and by committing some time and effort to their event. As a local business, though only quite small, we believe we should use our influence to support local causes.” “It has been a pleasure to support the Hospice, and hopefully we can be involved in some way in the future.” Have you always dreamed of running the Great North Run? The Hospice has guaranteed charity places for this year’s half marathon. The Hospice Lottery is one of the main sources of regular income for Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw. Every week over 6,600 people play the Hospice Lottery; this helps to raise around £350,000 every year. People play the Hospice Lottery for many different reasons, from the chance of winning the weekly top prize of £1,000, to supporting a local charity. Earlier this year, we received a letter from a new member which really touched us. “I am an Early Years provider so very child centred. My daughter is a doctor and we have a three year old grandchild, who is fit and well.” My heart goes out to those families who have to endure the pain of knowing that their child is ill and often terminal. I get tears in my eyes when I think of the anguish that they go through.” We are a very, very lucky family and try to support and raise money for children’s charities whenever we can. Although we support a lot of charities through Gift Aid, joining the lottery will keep it buoyant for you.” So, sincere thanks to all of you for the work that you do. The doctors, Page 20 | Hospice News Spring 2015

the nurses, ancillaries, cleaners and fundraisers... everyone! Those who stand with collection boxes on cold winter days!” There are many different ways in which people can play for the Hospice Lottery, including a team of cash collectors. In all weathers the collectors go doorto-door collecting money so players don’t miss a week of being in the draw.

We get some nice quotes from our lucky winners; one included “I am surprised and delighted to have won the £1,000 prize; I certainly didn’t expect it. I am going to put the money towards refurbishing my lounge later this year.” Lottery collectors are an important part of the Lottery’s day to day running, but this is not the only way in which people can take part. People can pay by direct debit, credit/debit card or by sending a cheque to the Hospice Lottery department. Last year some Hospice Lottery winners very generously decided to donate their winnings back. Almost £9,500 was raised in aid of Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw.

“I have been a supporter of Eden Valley Hospice for many years and cannot adequately express how much I admire the valuable work done here. It is a haven of tranquillity and calm at a time of great stress for patients and their families, and the care is wonderful. I know this from my own experience of two of my closest friends who were patients here.” Hospice Lottery £1,000 Winner

If you would like to join the Hospice Lottery for just £1 per week please call 01228 817614 or visit www.evhospice.org.uk/lottery. Or if you are already a member of the Hospice Lottery, why not encourage your friends, families or work colleagues to take part and be in with a chance of winning the £1,000 top prize.

Don’t forget that the Lottery Team can provide Wedding Favours and Scratch Cards. The new Lottery prize structure: 1st Prize £1,000 3rd Prize £50 2nd Prize £100 4th Prize 55 x £10 Hospice News Spring 2015 | Page 21
