Feedback and comments from people who have used any part of the Hospice’s services is really important. It allows us to continue to improve and develop the care and range of services we provide to local adults and children with life limiting illnesses.
Welcome to the autumn edition of our Hospice newsletter. I am delighted to be able to introduce our latest newsletter including the Hospice’s very first overseas challenges, a heart warming story from one of our many supporters and a host of exciting new volunteering opportunities. The passion, kindness and generosity of the local community are at the heart of everything we do at the Hospice. From our supporters to our volunteers, everyday people like you make a huge difference and we would like to know what you think about Eden Valley Hospice.
Page 2 | Hospice News Autumn 2013
At the moment there are a few different ways you can provide feedback, from simple comments forms in reception and the coffee lounge, to short questionnaires on the Adult Inpatient Ward and in the Day Hospice. We are also now searching for a small group of volunteers who will talk to our patients, families and volunteers to find out what they like about the care and what they would like to see done differently. Your comments and feedback can really help to change and improve Eden Valley Hospice. Our decision to improve access at the Hospice by replacing all the main entrance doors was a response to comments and feedback from you. If you have any ideas or comments which you would like to share with us, or if you would like be part of our new group of volunteers, please get in touch.

Light Up a Life
Let a loved one’s memory shine This Christmas thousands of lights of dedication will illuminate the Hospice as loved ones who are no longer with us are remembered. The Hospice is introducing the new tree lights in its grounds and inviting you to celebrate the life of a loved one through this year’s special Light Up a Life campaign. Last year the kindness and generosity of over 2,000 people raised an incredible £60,000 to allow the Hospice’s special light of care and support to shine all year round. Pauline Steenbergen, Hospice Chaplain, said “Light Up a Life is for all ages. The services are not just for people who belong to a church or have a Christian faith, the services are for anyone and everyone who have a loved one to remember.” Throughout November and December, the Hospice will bring the community together at nine carol services across the county, including a special event in the Hospice grounds. During the event the new lights of dedication will be switched on and will shine brightly in the trees during all of December.
Pauline continued, “People have a need to remember. It can make a difference when a person’s loss has been acknowledged, and the Hospice recognises that the care has to go on. The services make you feel that you are not alone.”
To dedicate a special light of love and support the Light Up a Life campaign please complete and return the form on the reverse of your letter, contact the Fundraising Team on 01228 817613 or visit www.evhospice.org.uk/lual

Family Fun Day
Family fun in the sun
The glowing, warm smiles and chuckles of laughter filled Eden House as children, families, volunteers and staff enjoyed a hot July afternoon filled with a variety of wonderful entertainment. From rabbit, duckling and guinea pig petting, to the Jewels of the Desert belly dancers, there were stalls, entertainment and games for everybody to enjoy.
The Family Fun Day, which raised over £1,000, provides the children’s hospice with the perfect opportunity to bring together the vast Eden House community from throughout Cumbria and South West Scotland. Page 4 | Hospice News Autumn 2013

The brightly coloured flowers, vibrant flower beds and glorious sunshine in the Eden House gardens provided the perfect summer setting for Eden House’s annual Family Fun Day. However, the action packed afternoon would not have been possible without the kindness, generosity and support of businesses from across the county who donated a range of raffle and tombola prizes and provided the entertainment for everybody to enjoy. Janet McGreevy, Clinical Sister at Eden House, said “All of the families, staff and volunteers had such a good day in the glorious summer weather. We would all like to say a huge thank you to the businesses who kindly donated prizes for our tombola and to thank all of the staff and volunteers who manned the stalls and provided entertainment on the day.”
Family Fun Day
A great day out! For a group of children their dreams came true as they immersed themselves in a world of millions of brightly coloured bricks, hundreds of life sized models and endless amounts of imagination at Legoland Discovery Centre in Manchester. On Wednesday 24 July, 25 children and 13 nurses enjoyed a wide range of creative attractions, from driving life size Lego cars to watching a fantastic 4D movie, at the children’s hospice’s Siblings Day. Every year the children’s hospice provides a host of action packed, fun filled days for all of the siblings and parents to enjoy, and the latest trip certainly proved to be a hit with everyone who went.
The colourful and creative day was made possible by the support and generosity of Merlin, who provided the tickets free of charge, and Direct Rail Services, who provided the transport, sweets, drinks and lunches for all of the children to enjoy during their fantastic day. Our nurses want to plan more and more exciting and fun activities for the children, young adults and families at Eden House but they need your help. Giving Something Back
“The Hospice helped us, so I dec In June 2012 Norma Sykes passed away after an 18 month battle with cancer. During the final year of her illness the Hospice’s team of nurses touched the lives of Norma and her family and inspired her daughter to support the care the Hospice provides. Norma’s daughter Cherie explains, “Eden Valley Hospice gave so much to my Mom, she was really comfortable at the Hospice. She didn’t have to be embarrassed when she went there. The Hospice helped my Mom and I wanted to give something back and help other people, as it’s always good to give something back.” During her battle with cancer Norma visited the Day Hospice every week, as well as spending time on the Adult Inpatient Unit. Cherie continues, “In the final year of her life Eden Valley Hospice became her lifeline and every Wednesday she would go to the Day Hospice, providing she felt well enough. At the Day Hospice

they would bake and make cards which were sold at the Hospice, this made Mom feel very useful.” “My Mom also spent weeks at a time in the Adult Inpatient Unit when she was very ill, in order to balance her medication. The staff and volunteers are wonderful and the care they give is beyond measure.” Inspired by Norma’s memory, Cherie became a ‘Team EV’ fundraising superhero by completing the 2nd Cross Border 10km Challenge from Gretna to Carlisle. Cherie has raised a fantastic £657 by completing the challenge in just over an hour.

cided to give something back.” Cherie explained “My Mom would be so proud that I am helping Eden Valley Hospice. Her voice got me through the training and the Cross Border Challenge is helping make my Mom’s memory mean something.” “The care and support Eden Valley Hospice gave my Mom in her final months was immeasurable. I hope that none of you have to go through this, but if you do Eden Valley Hospice holds your hand all of the way.” “As I like to say ‘Eden Valley Hospice helps the dying live.’”
