Welcome

Second, but just as important, is the committed and generous support that we receive from the local community that allows us to continue our services. People like you, who realise the important work of the Hospice and choose to help us.
Welcome to the latest edition of our Hospice newsletter. I always feel lucky to have an advanced preview of the contents before the newsletter goes to print. It is always so good to see the ever changing stories around the Hospice and the new activities and fundraising events we have to look forward to in the coming months. Despite the continual changes, there are some things that always stay the same and that we still try to emphasise in each newsletter. First, there is the care and support that people, both adults and children, and their families and friends receive from the Hospice.
Page 2 | Hospice News Spring 2013
Finally, it is important to know that nothing is taken for granted. We value the support we receive from both the community and our loyal volunteers and do our best to thank and acknowledge each gift and individual. At the same time, we see that the local community doesn’t take the Hospice for granted and even in these tough economic times, people understand our need and continue to support us, ensuring the future of the Hospice. I think that this is something really special and I hope you feel the same as you read through our new look newsletter.
Janet Ferguson Chief Executive
Eden Valley Hospice
What’s special about Eden Valley Hospice? A hospice is much more than a building, it is about people. At the very heart of Eden Valley Hospice is a dedicated team of nurses who provide care and support to adults, children and their families from Cumbria and South West Scotland.
Louise Wallace
Until you or a loved one is touched by the Hospice it may be difficult to know what to expect, but Louise Wallace, Adult Unit Clinical Sister, explains what is special about the Hospice.
At the Hospice we are fortunate to work in lovely surroundings with really good staff levels. This means that we always have time to listen to the patients and sometimes just being with them is enough to make them comfortable.
I feel fortunate to work at the Hospice. All of the nurses care passionately about making a difference to the lives of patients and their families. We step in when patients struggle with complex symptoms, whether these are physical or emotional, and we are here to provide care for their last days of life.
All of the nurses work closely with other members of the Hospice team, the Doctors, Family Support Team, Housekeeping and Catering as well as volunteers to ensure that we make every family member feel as comfortable and as valuable as possible when we are caring for their loved ones.
I also feel humbled that people trust you when they are vulnerable. This is why we all care for every patient as best as we can. It can be a sad but very rewarding job too.
Without the kindness and generosity of our supporters, the Hospice’s dedicated and passionate team of nurses would be unable to care for patients and their families when they need it most.

Behind the Scenes
The behind the scenes team that make the Hospice sparkle!
The small team play a vital role in maintaining the high standards of cleanliness throughout the Hospice, but the role involves much more than simply cleaning, washing and hoovering, explains Doug McGarr, the team’s longstanding manager. The Housekeeping team are vital to the Hospice. Despite being a small team in a very big building, they cover every corner. They begin cleaning the Hospice at 7am every morning, starting in the offices, reception and Day Hospice, before moving onto the Adult Ward and Eden House. All of the adult and children’s rooms are cleaned, with all of the vacated rooms being fully cleaned and prepared ready for a new patient to be admitted.

There are many unsung heroes who are essential in the day to day running of the Hospice, and one group that falls into this category is the Housekeeping team, made up of both staff and volunteers.
Some of the Housekeeping Team
However, the Housekeepers’ role is much more than cleaning the Hospice. They make the patients a cup of tea and talk to them, it is all part of their essential job. The Hospice prides itself on always thanking those that make it the special place that it is, so thanks to our Housekeeping team for making the Hospice sparkle!

Come Dine With Me
Great friends, great food and great entertainment are the perfect combination for any dinner party and Eden House Children’s Hospice’s Come Dine With Me 2013 is no exception. Over three separate evenings George Gregson, David Fisher and Andrew Mitchell Hill each cooked a tasty course before being judged by the other competitors. On the first evening George brought a piece of Italy to Eden House with his delicious starter of bruschetta topped with pesto, tomato and mozzarella. The Italian theme continued on the second evening as David cooked up a hot and spicy bolognaise for the group of friends. The final night of food and entertainment saw Andrew serve up one of Cumbria’s most famed desserts, a mouth-watering sticky toffee pudding.
Throughout the three evenings of great food the Eden House nurses organised a variety of entertainment for the group of friends. George, David and Andrew were captivated by Rob Mackay, Eden Valley Hospice Maintenance Officer, who played a variety of songs and by Amin Sane and Aida Magic Theatre, who mesmerised everybody with amazing magic tricks. But which of the boys received the most points? To find out visit www.evhospice.org.uk

Volunteering
Help spread the word of the Hospice
Leona Cameron and Steve Golding
Do you like to meet new people? Would you like to make a huge difference to Eden House Children’s Hospice? Currently the Hospice has over 400 volunteers providing an essential contribution to the day to day running of the Hospice. This could be by assisting the nurses in Day Hospice, transporting patients or helping with fundraising events.
The Hospice is now offering volunteers and supporters the exciting opportunity to be part of a brand new project in South Cumbria. On Thursday 21 March, Steve Golding, Volunteer Support Coordinator, together with the Lottery and Fundraising Team will be hosting a recruitment drive in Asda, Kendal. This exciting new opportunity will see volunteers play an instrumental role in the development of a new team of volunteers promoting Eden House Children’s Hospice in South Cumbria. The role will also involve assisting Hospice staff with fundraising events, including the Zip Wire event at Muncaster Castle in August.
If you would like to be involved with this new volunteering opportunity please contact Steve Golding on 01228 817658 or email steve.golding@edenvalleyhospice.co.uk

Make a Will Month
Leave a gift which will make a real difference This March will see the Hospice run Make a Will Month, which will allow local people to think of their loved ones and maybe the Hospice too. Writing a will can not only secure the future of your loved ones, but remembering the Hospice will allow the nurses to continue their care for many years to come. In recent years the Hospice has received gifts in people’s wills ranging from £50 to over £200,000, with over 30% of the Hospice’s annual income coming from gifts in wills. Whether the gift allows Eden Valley Hospice to purchase the latest medical equipment or craft products for the children in Eden House, each special gift can change the lives of local adults and children.
The Hospice would like to thank the participating solicitors •
Cartmell Shepherd in Carlisle, Brampton, Penrith and Haltwhistle
•
Beaty & Co. in Wigton
•
Milner Moser in Kendal
•
Wragg Mark Bell in Carlisle and Dalston
•
Burnetts in Carlisle
•
Hann & Co in Annan
Make a Will Month will allow you to receive a professionally written will in return for an affordable donation to the Hospice. Each partner solicitors firm is kindly offering their services free of charge. All that you have to do is contact them directly and quote Make a Will Month. You are not required to make a gift to Eden Valley Hospice in your will to take part in the scheme, but we would of course be delighted if you chose to. For more information about the Make a Will Scheme please contact Karen Durden, Fundraising Manager (Legacies & Trusts) on 01228 817607 or visit www.evhospice.org.uk/makeawillmonth

The Ultimate PJ Party
The Ultimate Pyjama Party Every June since 2007 thousands of women have come together to walk through Carlisle City Centre and remember loved ones in aid of the Hospice, but 2013 will be a little different. This year will see a brand new event launched, The Ultimate Pyjama Party. Put on your favourite ‘pjs’ and head to Carlisle Racecourse on Friday 21 June for a girls’ night out celebrating friendship, fun and Eden Valley Hospice. Get pampered, enjoy a live concert, dance the night away and be part of the PJ Parade – a 10 km walk! The night begins at 7pm when the build up starts until the Pyjama Parade at 9pm, with the after party to welcome you back.
Stay for the party only and then cheer on our PJ Paraders or join the walk and make a difference with hundreds of other ladies. Expect all of your favourite things - spa treatments, games and prizes, yummy food, special guests and the ultimate party night to remember! Why not donate them to the Eden Valley Hospice eBay store and make a real difference?
Based in the Lanes Bookshop a dedicated and enthusiastic group of volunteers have developed the Hospice’s eBay store over the last couple of years. The online store sells a wide range of donated items to people from all over the world.
Is there cash in your attic? We all have unwanted items gathering dust in our cupboards, lofts and sheds. However, did you know that what may be unwanted to you could be desirable and collectable items to others?
If you have any collectable toys, rare books, sports equipment or vintage clothing which you no longer want, why not make a real difference in 2013 and donate them to our eBay Store? You can either drop them in at The Lanes Bookshop or call Anne Hall, Retail Manager, on 01228 817615 to arrange a pick up.
If your drawers are filled with old mobile phones or old text books, CDs and DVDs are cluttering up your shelves, why not donate them to the Eden Valley Hospice Bookshop in The Lanes, Carlisle! We are able to turn your old mobile phones and text books into cash to support our dedicated team of nurses.

How important is the Family Support Team? The Family Support Team is very important to the Hospice. Everybody is more than just a medical condition; we all have spiritual, psychological and social needs which are equally as important. All of the staff and volunteers in the Family Support Team are part of the holistic care provided by the Hospice and our services are individually tailored for each person. What is special about Eden Valley Hospice? The Hospice plays a vital role in the community, it belongs to the community. Everybody in the Family Support Team helps people find the courage to face the future and we all need to be able to do that. Everybody at the Hospice is fortunate to have the time, opportunity and ability to care for all aspects of our patients and their family’s needs.
