Analysis & Translation Process Elizabeth B.-N. Sanders and P.J. Stappers say “The analysis of qualitative data is always an adventure of exploration, and the analysis of qualitative data that comes from generative design research especially so” (2012). Sanders and Stappers describe the aim of analysis as ‘picking apart’ and that “searching for patterns, generalizing findings, and finding evidence to support your conclusions” are important aspects of analysis (2012). In accordance with Sanders and Stappers writing, Richard Ackoff’s DIKW scheme for describe levels of understanding is utilized regularly to understand the captured phenomenon from design research protocols. Often, I work on analysis with all my data points displayed on a wall, properly organized and displayed in a logical order. In conjunction with ‘on the wall analysis’, as Sanders and Stappers call it, I use databases to input the quantitative information. Quantitative data points, unlike qualitative data, more often needs the rigor associated with computer analysis and graphing.

Role

MASTERS Thesis

Project lead

At The Ohio State University, I am primarily studying Interaction Design and Service Design. My thesis research is on the Ohio State Council of Graduate Students. I am applying a service design framework, The Experience Cycle by Shelley Evenson and Hugh Dubberly, to the organization. My research is comprised of two co-creative, generative workshops, several quantitative demographic and psychographic surveys, and a literature review. My research is triangulated through several validations including presentations to thesis committees, research participants, comparing quantitative to qualitative data, and presenting to the case study organization.

Shift

Chief Design Officer

Shift is a game being produced for students of all levels at the Ohio State University. The web and mobile based application will allow students to socially engage in challenges to incrementally enhance their personal wellness. The app measures wellness across 9 different areas such as Physical Wellness, Emotional Wellness, Financial Wellness, Environmental Wellness, Aesthetic Wellness, etc.

• • • • • •

Shift is challenge based. Not only will the system challenge users, but users can also challenge themselves and their peers. Challenges range from simple tasks like “Increase Your Physical Wellness: Visit the campus gym three times this week” to networked challenges made up of smaller challenges such as “Increase Your Physical Wellness: Loose 25 Pounds This Quarter”. Simply put, Shift enhances student lives by asking them to compete against one another in small manageable tasks that have a large impact over time.

This opportunity has provided me the avenue to research, in a service design capacity the systems of the Council. It has also given me the opportunity to redesign several websites and creates several communication plans for internal Council services.

Project

Role

Nationwide usability team evaluation

Researcher

During the summer of 2010, I participated on a design team’s who was asked to evaluate the Nationwide Internet Usability Team. We were asked to evaluate the group as if we had no prior knowledge of the organization, its structure, or the nature of their work.

• • • • •

Establish discuss guides Schedule interviews Moderate interviews Observe team proceedings Visualize findings

Over the course of two months, our team had a primary research goal of identifying and visualizing the structure of the team, the organization of Nationwide and the associated partners of the Usability Team. To achieve this goal we interviewed over 50 people from various parts of the company, observed daily practices and sat in on agile production meetings. We also used secondary research to better understand their process from an agile point of view and an academic view of usability. In the end, we produced an interactive PDF that could be emailed, used on the web, and printed if necessary. This document described, visually, the Team’s process and all members of the team by position. The document was completely circular - any one link on a page could lead you to a complimentary point in the document.

9

To the right are example pages from the final deliverable document. Due to confidentiality agreements we were asked not to provide these documents in a legible way; however, we can discuss the project and what happened.
