Welcome to the As we turn the page on another year, I'm struck by just how much we have to celebrate. Allen’s longstanding tenure as one of the safest, most livable and most financially stable communities in Texas continued this year, and we are working hard to ensure that Allen remains the best place to live for decades to come!

Ken Fulk, Mayor CITY OF ALLEN

One way we do this is by looking for ways to improve the resident experience. Upgrades such as smart water meters, new community engagement and volunteer opportunities, and investments in public-private partnerships—such as the naming rights agreement at Credit Union of Texas Event Center—are just a few of the initiatives that come to mind. You can learn about each one of these topics in Allen In Focus, located at the back of this publication. Of course, one of the best ways to get plugged into your community is by having fun! In the following pages you’ll find a wide assortment of activities and events to help you and your family thrive, from fitness classes to sports leagues to special events like the ever-popular Eggcellent Family Adventure (page 19). With so much to see and do, there truly is no place like Allen!

EVENT CENTER RENAMED

CUTX EVENT CENTER DEBUTS The next time you head to a concert, Allen Americans hockey or Dallas Sidekicks soccer game, you’ll notice a new name on your ticket stub: Credit Union of Texas Event Center. The new title for Allen’s 7,000-seat arena officially debuted in October. The seven-year deal represents significant new revenue for Allen’s Parks and Recreation Department, which operates the arena. Credit Union of Texas (CUTX) moved its corporate headquarters to Allen in 2019 and quickly became involved with Allen Parks and Recreation by sponsoring the Holly Jolly Celebration, Eggcellent Family Adventure, Arbor Day Celebration and Summer Sounds Concert Series. These partnerships will continue under the new agreement.

UPGRADE UNDERWAY

SMART WATER METERS A major overhaul of Allen’s water meter system is expected to get underway in 2022. A vendor will soon be selected to convert water meters at every Allen home and business to Advance Meter Infrastructure (AMI), commonly known as smart meters. The upgrade will allow for consistent billing cycles and near real-time tracking of water use. Once a vendor is chosen, it will take approximately 18 months for contractors to install new meters and communication infrastructure citywide. Customers will be notified directly ahead of meter installation at their address. After new meters are installed, hourly meter readings will be available to customers through an online portal, allowing citizens to track their own consumption within 24 hours of water use. Utility billing account information and payment processes will not change at any time during the transition to AMI.

CITY OF ALLEN - COMMUNITY ENHANCEMENT

BUILDING BETTER NEIGHBORHOODS

FOR THE ALLEN COMMUNITY The City of Allen’s Community Enhancement Department is on a mission to support and strengthen Allen’s neighborhoods. Formed in 2020, part of Community Enhancement’s mission is to help enhance and stabilize existing neighborhoods, and ultimately empower residents with the knowledge, resources and ability to be the City’s partners in maintaining the places they call home. This year, the team has been meeting with residents to identify areas of their neighborhoods that could use a helping hand and coordinating work efforts to turn these areas into a source of neighborly pride. Along with these enhancement efforts, the new Let’s Party Neighborhood Block Party Trailer will soon offer residents the resources to gather and celebrate their community, meet their neighbors or simply throw a fun block party. Looking toward 2022, the Community Enhancement team has plans to expand its enhancement programs into more neighborhoods across Allen, leaving a trail of beautiful landscaping, repaired entryway signs and happy Allen residents in its wake.

LEARN FROM ALLEN FIRE DEPARTMENT

FIRE & LIFE SAFETY TRAINING From CPR training to fire station tours, Allen Fire Department (AFD) is preparing to resume many public outreach programs temporarily paused due to COVID-19. Led by experienced AFD staff, these educational opportunities prepare residents of all ages to do the right thing in an emergency— whether dialing 9-1-1, using a fire extinguisher, applying a tourniquet or giving CPR. A Citizens Fire Academy (for ages 18+) and Summer Fire Academy (for students entering 5th or 6th grade) offer extended opportunities for hands-on learning. In addition to hosted trainings, AFD visits schools, employers, religious centers and other community groups to offer customized fire and life safety programs.
