personal summary
dane currey
As professionals educated in design fields, we have been given the ability to help others to solve seen and unforeseen problems in their daily lives. By taking into consideration the way in which people live, work and interact, it is often that the most appropriately creative way to solve these problems lies in investigating the very nature of the them, turning the negative into a positive, the constraint into a opportunity. In the process of finding solutions, we must strive to gather as much meaningful information as possible, and surround ourselves with those who are experts in their chosen fields, working together to reach the best result. For me, it is important to remember that those who are unable to afford our services, are those most likely to require our help the most. Their everyday life problems are amplified by their hardship circumstances and it is here that quite often the smallest designed improvement can make the biggest impact, and render the most rewarding outcome.

landscape Landscape architecture has been the focus of my career and education for the past 14 years, from large scale parks down to courtyard gardens, as well as down to the minute details of construction. My training as a Cartographer initially gave me a unique appreciation for site topography and today, this still informs my desire for landscapes of variation. I also have a deep and ongoing passion for the incorporation of sustainable design principles which help establish ecosystems, not just ‘green-washing’. I have prided myself on my ability to work through all phases from concept, schematic design, detail development to construction drawings through to final site supervision, to deliver high quality projects for my clients and valuable additions to the public space sphere.

dazu long shui lake ar tisian water village with HASSELL Sited in a village renowned for its tool making heritage, and in a region known for its stone carvings, the village aims to encapsulate and display various intangible cultural heritages from around the region as a cultural display village situated along a picturesque lake. Beginning with a master plan review, the landscape has worked very closely with the architectural development in an effort to create a holistic and immersive experience for tourists visiting the cultural commercial streets, hostels, temple, theatre wetland and wetland amphitheatre. The scope has extended into orchestrating leasing strategies with landscape theming and also a system of water circulation and access with focal points of activity for visitors both on land and water. sejong-daero historic cultur al space with Gutiérrez-delaFuente Arquitectos Creating a heritage of the future: ‘On Common Ground’ is anchored around turning point in history, a proposed reconciliatory point in the shared timelines of the peoples of South Korea and Japan, a point which can allow for historical understanding and acceptance and ushering in a subsequent period of forgiveness and unprecedented spirit of cooperation in moving together for a common good for the East Asia region. A series of small scale actions were orchestrated to create a larger intervention in the urban fabric of Seoul’s city center: the Reconciliation Wall, the East Sea Garden, the Hill Trail, the Bangs, the Big Bang and the Protective Shadow. long hu li with HASSELL Long Hu Li has been positioned as the new high-end boutique retail destination for the up and coming district of Long Hu, and a model for the client’s future retail operations expansion around Henan. With a retail mix focused mainly on dining and recreation along its narrow laneways, a landscape was composed that draws on the unique topographical characteristic of the Yellow River in this area, where it becomes ‘the perched river’. Also drawing on the culture of traditional marketplaces, it seeks to create points of orientation along uncluttered laneways. A simple and clean design approach allows for adaption to any number of seasonal programming options within the tight spaces, but also reinforces a unique identity and brand for the development. greentown future park with HASSELL Drawing on a project positioning as a new high tech hub, a proposed minimalist cube architecture, and the site’s proximity to Hangzhou’s most iconic natural landscapes, Greentown’s Future PARK was designed along a pixelated grid of landscape elements that pile and disperse, clutter and reveal to create a unique yet functional landscape extension to the future interior workspaces. Public open spaces referencing Xixi Wetland and West Lake and it’s surrounding hill sides are complimented in scale with smaller private courtyard villa landscapes, and all are situated to form a network of rain gardens Stages: Concept Design through Schematic Design Client: Zhejiang Sunwave Communications Co., Ltd Location: Hangzhou, China Type: Workplace Size: 21,800 sqm Year: 2015

In order for a place to be a haven of health and wellness for its users, the site in itself needs to be cleansed, refreshed and refined. In an exercise of urban acupuncture, a reference to traditional Chinese medicine and it’s health benefits, Alibaba’s two plots are overlaid with a grid of vertical elements such as canopy trees and vegetation clad poles. Whilst creating a strong iconic and cohesive language for navigating the elongated campus, they also initiate a refreshing release, an opening in the strong skin of the ground plane. At either end of the site, two recreation ‘Pearls’, a reference to the adjacent waterway, offer year round changing programs of events catering to the company’s target employee demographic. luoyang super br and mall with Watershed As a cultural icon of Luoyang, the peony was taken as key inspiration for the landscape of the mixeduse development surrounding the new district centre. As a conceptual foundation, the site is littered with petals, as if they had fallen and been scattered by the wind and rain. Like the erosive loess soils of the Yellow River region, these natural forces have created gullies and sunken areas, revealing underlying features such as the stream, gathering areas, basement entries, etc Stages: Concept Design through Construction Drawings Client: Charoen Pokphand Group Location: Luoyang, China Type: Mixed-use Size: 66,100 sqm Year: 2012 - 2014

Incorporating plaza entries for office towers, residences and a garden landscape for the new Intercontinental Hotel Group operated hotel, the project’s inspiration of fluidity can be felt around in all aspects of the design, from detailed paving, to feature walls, water features and iconic custom designed lights. Seeking LEED certification, the project includes permeable paving, bioretention basins and both sedum and biofilter grass covered intensive green roofs. concordia international school with Hyder Consulting (ACLA) + Urban Art Projects In a complete renovation of a bland school landscape, a driving concept was to provide a canvas backdrop for future experimentation with materiality and creativity, a space allowing for multi-functionality where young minds are not restricted. In consultation with the school community, a naturalistic setting of undulating, planted play hills, rammed earth walls, high-quality play equipment and commissioned artworks were created to reflect the school’s values. wieden + kennedy roof scape with Watershed The design for the rooftop of international advertising agency W+K’s office in Shanghai was created as a retreat was both flexible and multifunctional, consistent with the company’s culture, which enhances the day-to-day work experience of staff and can be used for a variety of special events and purposes. Supplied with a number of large pieces of stackable modular furnishings taken from the ancient Chinese seven-piece puzzle ‘qi qiao ban’ or ‘tangrams’, the furniture scaled tiles fit together into a square and, when taken apart, can be arranged in any number of ways to create fanciful and useful spaces. The tangram pieces are the building blocks of a multi-functional fantasy garden for grown-ups. fuxing lu cour t yard with Watershed As lead consultant in the redesign of the courtyard of a heritage villa located deep within the Former French Concession, I worked with the client to transform their exterior space into a work of contemporary garden art with relaxed breakout areas for private business negotiations and more formal event venues for client functions and presentations. The concept was based on a scattering of platforms around the landscape that float over planted beds and shallow pools at different levels to create a hierarchy of spaces using elements of bronze, bamboo and fire to create multifunctional but refined landscape. Stages: Concept Design Client: ChinaVest Location: Shanghai, China Type: Commercial Size: 133 sqm Year: 2012
Even before my career moved in a direction towards landscape architecture, I had a great interest in planning at both the urban and rural scales. Immediately following my degree in Cartography, I enrolled in the Masters of Urban and Regional Planning program at Curtin University for a number of semesters, before realising my main interests lay within landscape. However, as a result of my earlier interests and time spent in the masters program, I gained a great appreciation for large and small scale urban design projects and, consequently, the earlier phase of my landscape career tended towards this area in the multidisciplinary environment of a large design studio. Since moving to Asia, I have continued to have involvement with master planning from initial design conception all the way through to the implementation.

In recent years, I have found the opportunity to expand my experience within the built environment to encompass a range of architecture and interiors projects. Beginning with my ability to work contextual site features into strong marketable narratives, this has lead to further work on the implementation of the narratives within the built form. With particular focus on hospitality, workplace and commercial spaces, I enjoy the challenge of working within the restricted space offered by four walls and finding the best possible functional and aesthetic solutions within fixed boundaries.

vipshop.com headquar ter s with HASSELL Designed to reflect a company started along the banks of the Pearl River, Vipshop.com’s new headquarters was proposed to be a building that is born of the River Pearl, where nature pours into the campus and the two become one. The landscape begins with a jetty landing, travels along the terraces and up onto the river deck, and then punctures the building’s lower campus environment. The recreational skydeck includes facilities for both the employees and an exclusive landscape for hotel guests, whilst the executive floor has reserved gardens at the top of the tower. In response to the emerging and evolving nature of e-commerce, the design allows for maximum future flexibility. The design places great importance on workplace and future floorplate versatility. Observing the abused parcels that are strewn across public thoroughfares, this informed the concept for the plywood insertion, which reveals its contents to visitors. ‘Parcels’ of programmes spill from this volume - the material scatters, dislocates and bends to form a reception desk, millwork, seating and tables. tongli blossom hill inn with Watershed The ancient water town of Tongli contains one of the five UNESCO listed Scholar Gardens, and adjacent to this lie the former Lize Girls School grounds, one of the first girls’ schools in China, which are set to become the new Tongli Blossom Hill Inn. Working with each building style across the campus and complementing the concept by utilising the subjects of the school curriculum to inform detailing and composition, the site was divided into distinct zones. As a collective, ‘the grounds of the genteel scholar’ concept provides guests and visitors with a unique insight into the spirit of the students that resided on site. The design strives to reference the feminine, elegant and youthful qualities of the students that attended the school. blossom hill inn narr atives with Watershed After the successful submission of the Tongli Blossom Hill Inn narrative, the client requested assistance to construct narratives for two more upcoming properties, Nanxun Blossom Hill Inn and Yangshan Blossom Hill Inn. The Yangshan property focused on the countryside’s peach tree groves and the local lore which told of how the Monkey King seeded the first peach trees. The site’s complexity, being broken into several parcels around a public park and separated by waterways, was turned into a marketable concept with water-based transportation around the sites, lending itself to a unique arrival process for guests. The Nanxun property focused on the dichotomy of the site, which was unique with Classical Chinese and European architectural styles side by side. This was due to the rich international silk trading history of the water town and this was reflected in the narrative and site layout design. gongyi xintiandi architecture for humanity quirimbas archipelago After admiring the work of design NGOs within the social design sphere but not being able to find a suitable platform in existence, myself and a group of like-minded architects orchestrated the establishment of the Shanghai chapter for Architecture for Humanity (AFH SH) and then subsequently Social Design Studio (SDS) in China. Having found both a capability for organising these platforms and a sense of accomplishment from seeing their work result in life improving impacts, Social Design Studio is now focussed on assisting island communities in northern Mozambique.

gong yi xintiandi with Social Design Studio + Watershed Gongyi Xintiandi was created as a new model incubator for social entrepreneurs. The landscape and commercial frontage of the downtown site, a former orphanage with several buildings built from bricks salvaged from the ancient Shanghai City Wall, was redesigned into a space to cater to the needs of a variety of diverse user groups in a contemporary design style respecting it’s historic context and historically significant trees. architecture for humanit y The founding team of AFH SH established the Shanghai branch chapter of Architecture for Humanity in 2010 as a platform to assist the Chinese NGO community with their design requirements and facilitate a growing need in the local design industry to ‘give back’ through philanthropic endeavours. The hosting of regular meetings and organisation of volunteers enabled AFH SH to grow a large following and enabled the group to deliver multiple projects to key clients like Habitat for Humanity, INCLUDED, and those NGOs under the care of Nestworks (at Gongyi Xintiandi). At it’s peak, however, AFH SH was forced to close due to contractual adjustments from the headquarters in USA, but the work was continued in a smaller, more private manner with the establishment of SDS. quirimbas archipelago with Social Design Studio Inspired by a trip around the southern nations of Africa and witnessing first hand the poverty but also the potential of the land, it was decided that Social Design Studio would partially focus on the Quirimbas Archipelago (in Mozambique) and it’s communities who live amongst the ruins of Portuguese settlements from the late 18th century. Beginning with Island Waste Treatment Strategies and following on with other community design roles including site planning, it is hoped that SDS’s role can encourage responsible development of the islands as they seek to make the most of a recovering tourism industry. With a passion for always striving to see work done correctly and consistently at the highest quality, my employers and their clients have found me capable of supervising the quality of their deliverables and able to create processes, as automated as possible, that simplify team members’ tasks and leave as little chance for error as possible. This skill has lead me to taking on more of an oversight role with identity branding, marketing, business development, office management and administration related practices.

systems management with all employers Throughout my career, I have guided the development of systems which ensure the highest quality control for client deliverables and simplified implementation by fellow team members - from graphics quality and consistency to GIS processes used in the collection of field survey data and transition into detailed documentation. More recently, with the founding of Watershed, I had responsibility for the roll out of most systems company wide, including: CAD manager duties for protocol establishment and title block design; general server layout and access; template design for reports and minutes; master plan and graphic section illustration standards; revising management reporting and tracking systems, the wholesale reorganisation of the Business Development and bidding system, and a revision of the content and layout of project contracts. visual identit y with Watershed As a founding director of Watershed, I was asked by the owners of the firm to develop options for the new studio name. As the firm was founded to be a departure from the existing model of design firms in China and one that made the most of the maturation of the construction industry, the name ‘Watershed’ best reflected the driving force of the studio and the design ethos of working with the landscape and its cultural systems. Following from this, I developed several options for the logo and typefaces to be used in the bilingual visual brand that reflected the studio’s approach of a refined but simple approach to design. With the growth of the firm I was the custodian of the visual identity and implemented it when I created the business cards, studio website, company stationary, deliverables templates (documents, graphic and CAD), general admin templates, and the standardised business development system (project sheets, CV’s, interactive flash brochures, media articles). immer sive marketing with Watershed, Greenspace + Crystal Graphics Following on from my extensive work on ‘The Springs’, Tishman Speyer asked me to continue in the supervision of the production of their marketing materials for their onsite Sales Experience. As the lead project manager for this, I supervised the coordinated efforts of Watershed’s internal team, two external rendering companies and a physical model company and advised the ‘experiential designers’ on creative issues in keeping with the project’s concept and themes. The process resulted in over 40 interior and exterior renders (highlighting the unique vegetated environment), numerous minutes of video and two large-scale but detailed motorised physical models of the site and surrounding neighbourhoods, all on schedule.
