URBAN MOUNTAIN
18
a cluster of tall buildings which resemble crater-topped mountains MAD’s design affirms the inherent significance of Huangshan Mountains´ landscape. Composed in deference to the local topography, project evokes the geology of the region. Cluster of tall buildings which resemble cratertopped mountains blur the boundaries between the geometries of architecture and nature. Huangshan project echoes Taoist paintings of peaks and pagodas, in homage to the ancient Eastern philosophy focused on connecting humanity to the surrounding ecosystem. Its volcanoshaped towers will be linked with a meandering series of courtyards, waterways, and pavilions that organically unite the complex and its beautiful surroundings. Each floor of each tower is unique and accessed from shared social spaces, creating a seamless balance between private and public spaces. The same serene design sensibility of natural environment extends to the interior of buildings with offices, hotels, housing and retail. For residents, the apartments will be a quiet retreat - an immersive, natural space. All apartments have spacious balconies which overlook the lake. Communal amenities and walking paths encourage residents to wander among the buildings.
II
MAD´s urban mountain proposal, mimic the spatial proportion of the natural world; dynamic patterns both intimate and grand, offers a holistic experience not found in earlier central business districts. Instead of impressing discrete buildings upon a grid, urban density is achieved by creating a contiguous base from which eleven unique towers arise. Architecture makes its strongest argument at this scale, when it offers an unfolding experience, when building bodies relate and coexist with each other..

SEA PEARLS
28
Quanzhou Convention Center is conceived as a continuous weave of architecture and landscape that blurs the boundary between architecture, public space and city landscape: a futuristic urban vision based on the naturalistic philosophy of the eastern world. It supersedes pearl like forms long prescribed for projects of this scale. It exists in a natural order of air, wind and light, fostering a resonance between human and nature. In these spaces, nature and function are not separated but intertwined. The city of Quanzhou seeks a metropolitan landmark that goes beyond the local to renew its urban life and redefine the cultural landscape of the city. It will require solid architectural concepts that will launch the city into a new global arena. Today’s landmark buildings are no longer characterized by mere considerations for height, but instead focus on cultural inquiries into our relationship with nature. More than making visual impacts, landmark buildings should foster public recreation and inspire communication and imagination. MAD architects’ proposal shows how a building can bring the city and art together, creating an urban public space where people can consider their relationship between time, point of view and each other.

A CLOUD
36
a vertical cloud that filters the solar radiation
An architecture that performs a cloud that make limits between static construction and imaginary fantasy disappear
Performance parameters: Taking a holistic approach, we propose a framework of performative design criteria based on program requirements and environmental factors (solar acces/heat loss). Within this framework, ETFE cylinders with nitrogen fog system are performatively distribuited along the envelope. This environmentally responsive approach aims to reduce solar gain in Wuhan’s hot and humid climate while providing sufficient transparency for daylight and view access. Augmenting the air density of the ETFE cushions with nitrogen particles, the G factor of the building goes from 0,35 to 0,19. The system activates itself automatically with a temperature sensor network. At this point, it performs and regulates the solar energy with a filter in the façade, which combines a nitrogen particle system air from the ETFS-s and creates a cloud that protects the building´s interior.

XWG studio´s design clearly demonstrates how FRP as a structural skin material was for the first time tailored in an architectural project. The architects creatively solved the complicated 3D curved surface material problem. By using this lightweight, waterproof, thermal insulation and easy molding material, the architects were able to express a peculiar shape of the building. Since the architects were involved in the production and the installation process of FRP, it enhances the accuracy and the quality controls for the final non-linear building result. This small building addresses the architects’ dedication to holistic design approach by exploring new material and form, aiming to establish the logic of materializing geometries through the following three aspects: 1.The manufacture process that investigates how to produce double curvature surface with CNC milling machine based upon FRP foaming 2. The structural performance of the FRP board components proved by extending crashing tests 3. The tectonic solution that implementing the simple bracket fixing cladding system due to FRP´s all-in-one properties on thermal insulation, structural stiffness, light weight, water proof and acceptable, in an esthetic term, finishes.

Architectural and Structural design: The project is a gate pavilion for Sunshine Kaidi factory with the functions including security, reception, monitoring, duty and training. Because of the client requested a closed passage for the public, the roof came down to the land in the position of the corridor on the southern façade of the building. Therefore the form of the gate house was generated. The structural system is formed completely by FRP board components in total thickness of 600mm, in which foam core is 500mm, coating layer 3mmm, coating layer in 4 edges 6mm.

Inspired by baroque style, Giles Deleuze read Leibniz´s Monad Theory and created the conception of Folding(Pleat). Deleuze thought that in the world of Pleat, Time and Space will be generated as Substance folding, unfolding and refolding. He also thought Inflection is ideal basic element for folding, outward of body result from self-organization of Substance, and surface could replace special surface and become body itself when the surface is with characters of body structure and material. Here Deleuze presented a kind of Structure Surface with thickness. FRP (fiber reinforced polymer) is exactly this kind of material and with ability to bear load independently. In this project, we use FRP as structure surface and shell body together to have explored first time the possibility in using FRP as building material.

FRP is compound material which consists of core material of polyurethane foam and coating of fiber reinforced resin on both surface of foam. This sandwich compound material is light weight, high in intensity, corrosion-resistant, and insulative in electricity and heat. It has been used widely in aviation, bridge, fan blades, pressure vessel and so on. We invited experts from the fields of architecture, structure, material, manufacture and construction to work together in order to use it for the first time in a permanent building. In this project FRP boards were manufactured by CNC milling machine in the factory and then transported to construction site, connected to each other by pouring joint with the same material. And finally it has been built as an integral building. .

TWISTING SUPERIMPOSTIONS

Architecture: The design of Anyang Normal Collage and Culture Museum is defined by its closeness to the entrance of Anyang Normal University in Anyang - a city with a long history and splendid culture, of Henan Province in central China. The building’s form was conceived as a basic rectangular box, sliced horizontally into the slabs overlapped and stepped with each other and then this form is twisted as like pointing out at the main library building in the center of university campus- so the building is that way is nearly all cantilever, extending up to the campus axis and enhancing the main entrance of it, forming hence its gate. The sculptural volume, naturally and confidently enhances in this way the multi-layered, coherent ensemble that includes museum, Chinese promotion center, academic exchange hall, collage of literature, collage of history, Anyang normal collage of oracle bones, culture research center for middle land of China, jiaguwen digital research center, oracle research lab. By means of a geometrically versatile spatial layering, an unhindered view is provided from the centrally organized museum space. The same spatial layer gives the spiral downward movement a special quality, differentiating and staging the direction of exterior light. In the same time the lines of sight and light in the museum and collage storeys provide a stunning view into the distance, and a pleasant view of the existing Anyang university campus. XWG Studio’s design response is to apply its research into the potential to expand contemporary understandings of new educational environments into a wider arena and thereby affect a design approach that creates educational environments which stimulate communication, experimentation and creativity through a new type of collage building. Anyang Normal Collage and Culture Museum becomes a prototype building; one which not only incorporates a fully inclusive approach to modern educational system, but which also provides an example of the role that architecture can play in the educational environments of the future.

Program: Anyang Normal Collage and Culture Museum combines one level of 4000 square meters of permanent exhibition space, one level of 2400 square meters of Chinese promotion center, 2000 academic exchange hall, two levels of 6000 square meters of Collage of history, two levels of 6000 square meters of Collage of literature, 1700 square meters of Anyang normal college, 1000 square meters of jiaguwen digital research center, 1200 square meters of culture research center for middle land of china, 1000 square meters of oracle information research lab, entrance lobby into one compact design limited up to 8-storeys building. All parts of the programme were implemented into the spatial organization of the building. The diagrammatic approach employed combines the collage, laboratory, workshop and research functions with the public exhibition areas and museum hall offering an open and communicative building concept. There are no spatially separated departments along the band of laboratories. Instead, studying areas merge into each other, promoting interdisciplinary teaching practices. XWG’s ambition is to challenge the required rigid programme and redefine functioning of a collage as an open and modern institution which responds to a question about an educational system in the future. The relation teacher-student was in our focus as well. Consequently, instead for developing each closed program block (education, research and exhibition) separately on different levels, the intention was to create synergies between each of them. Each closed programme sector was subdivided into singular self-sufficient cells and then clustered in a completely new configuration providing totally new organisms arranged around main research platform in the center (atrium) for student exchange information and lectures. The platform becomes a place for interaction between students and teachers, future tutors and colleagues giving the opportunity to create an open and transparent relationship between each other.

The project explores possible surface effects of a planar geometry conceived with pre-fabricated modules. A system of modules was mobilized to create a deep façade with a continuously varying field around a simple geometry, in this case twisted boxes. Design of a module is realized in reference to traditional Anyang oracle patterns (symbol of culture and heritage) of the latticed windows are gradually transformed in abstract lines (representation of modern linear architecture) by the use of advanced parametric design method. In this way Anyang culture is somehow “engraved” in the skin of the building.
Materials: The use of materials in all spaces also signals the potential continuity in the program. The museum’s exterior façade is designed as a concrete skin that wrap the whole building and hides the structural steel truss working beneath. Elsewhere, materials vary, and include concrete flooring, plywood paneling, and translucent plastic paneling over fluorescent lighting in interiors
Light and sustainability:

museum floor interior view ...............................................................................................................................................................................................................................................
The pre-cast light weight concrete modules varying in geometry are arranged incrementally to achieve gradient effects around the planar geometry of the box. This variation provides an unstable character in the tectonic perception of the box as conditions of direct/diffused sun light, hard/soft shadows render varying identities through time. Furthermore, the relative thickness of the floor plates is substantial enough to balance the daily temperature cycles by virtue of its thermal mass, storing heat over the course of the day and releasing it during the cooler nights. It is such passive strategies that make the building a truly sustainable place to study and work.

Our main goal was to shape up a space suggesting the idea of enticement. It was about creating an atmosphere similar to that of the famous Matisse’s painting “Stillness, Luxury and Voluptuousness”. Clothes were treated as real protagonists of the scenario. Moreover, they would define the palette of the whole. In order to gain consistency, we directed our efforts to expound the meaning of “plastic unity”, so as in a typical CUSTO graphism. That is, to turn colour and shape into one single thing. It is this balance between chromatic constructions in the ground and the sharp lines of the furniture what catches the eye, and enhances the beauty of clothes. The Lighting system was designed with a double function. On the one hand, it should change our perception of the height , making walls and ceilings look higher than they really are. On the other hand, lights were to act as paint when projected on walls.
VII
The idea of exclusiveness was developed in two ways: one material, strategical the other. The fact that all furniture was designed by the members of the Studio alludes to uniqueness. The idea to show almost nothing in the window display helps making the client grow more curious about what is shown in the inside.

Dialogic architecture: 75
76
Architectural and urban development of contemporary cities is observed to be in a constant debate about the respect for the cultural heritage, its relationship the past, its attempts to create new spaces in correlation and coexistence with historical values. Modernity inside of historical fabric of the city requires a continuous research for a compromise and elaboration of a dialog method. Reformulating universal rules which could lead to universal and local solutions are highly required now. Museum of Prague, located in the area of historic tram station building on Kaweczynska street, is to promote all potential possiblities hidden in its historical remains. The issue of Prague shows a possibility for an interesting bridge to build between preservation and architecture. The idea of preservation is much more that preserving what otherwise would vanish. It is about caring, it is about ethics, it is about the search for the good; and it is not about pragmatic problem solving only, where many would see its destination. The problem here is not of either-or nature: it is not a question about reconstructing or not reconstructing old city fragments. It is the question about how to advance reconstruction. How to naturally transform it into the idea of the next contemporary, where the issue of zeitgeist does not separate it from architecture anymore, but where the issue of memory mutually advance their common potential? How to spread ethically-based preservation standards over the troubled contemporary city of no value?
VIII
For contemporary city to persist as good environment, and to sustain this quality, architectural minds, it seems, must first leave their existential setup: most of all the idea of separation and completeness. Turning towards the value of infinity: dialogue, responsibility, and always ready to respond incompleetness can make change. Dialogic construction of architectural spaces has a chance to reconstruct cities, to identify their architectural DNAs, and to transform them into advanced design languages. Dialogic approach means acknowledging the importance of the hidden.
