Institutional Architecture for Diyarbakir | MArch Urban Design 2015

NON-STATE PARADIGM

- Institutional Architecture for Diyarbakir MArch Urban Design Instructor - Adrian Lahoud, Sam Jacoby Our project is located in the city of Diyarbakir, Turkey. Beginning with the aspiration for a democratic confederation by the Kurdish people, the project explores how architecture can be used to institutionalise the various communal spaces that currently exist either formally or informally within Diyarbakir. From the scale of the city and its infrastructure to intimate gathering spaces, a set of formally distinct and clearly hierarchical forms are deployed through which a new idea of Kurdish autonomy and modernity is framed.

The City of Diyarbakir Diyarbakir is divided into four districts: Suriçi, Yenişehir, Bağlar and Kayapınar. The layout of Diyarbakir with four different urban morphologies reflects city transformation. The oldest neighbourhood, Suriçi, is now a central quarter with four equal slices that surrounded by city walls. The inner spatial arrangement carries the traits of the traditional Anatolian city that sprung up spontaneously, with little or no planning. The historical area is presently inhabited by immigrants from villages and smaller towns around the city and is one of the poorest quarters. Kayapınar, ‘the new face of Diyarbakir’, is the latest district in the city.4 Developed from the 1990s, the neighbourhood is designed in a regular, green and modern layout. The uneven growth between Yenişehir and Bağlar indicates the rapid development of the city from 1930s to 1990s, resulting in fragmentation within the city.

Analysis of Vernacular Kurdish Housing

Spatial Hierarchy in Plan

Political Institutions - The Bar Area

Architecture can be utilized for Kurds expressing their ideology of organization, activities and claims. The design of political institution suggests a new hierarchical collective form which allowing grass-roots participation. This reflects the idea that democracies is based on collective consensus. Furthermore, the proposal as a fragmented entirety allows various political and communal activities taking places within the Kurdish community. It best expresses the meaning of Kurdish alternative modernization seeking to be non-state independent.

Publicity & Privacy Inspired by the idea of publicity and privacy, three different structures are used to define different zones. The core ‘unit’ refers to the private flat, the ‘frame’ is used to provide spaces for social interaction, while the ‘wall’ define the boundary of the community.

The Urban Infill

The focus of this project is the use of material systems, which in this case are brick and timber. The concept of the design is merging outside with inside within a frame structure. The project is located in an inner-city urban infill site in Liverpool, whose surroundings are mostly composed of heavy bricks. Therefore, the design starts from using a framework to achieve a relatively light image. I continue the idea of a passageway and develop the circulations both horizontally and vertically to express the idea like streets in the sky. In this way, when people walk into this place, they do not consider themselves inside a solid building. The philosophy of material use is to show their original characteristics, which means that timber is light while brick is heavy.

Lighting plays one of the most important roles in chapel spaces. As a massive sculptural architecture enclosed by thick raw whitewashed walls, the interior lighting of the chapel mainly comes from three parts: the light towers, the small painted irregular windows in the walls, and the clerestory windows between the roof and the walls. In general, the lighting levels are relatively low in Chapel Ronchamp. Light spreads to the interior because of the small splayed openings on the wall and the clerestory windows along the vertical tower. The soft and indirect light defines an enclosed space as light makes its presence inside the dark interior of the chapel. And the contrast between brightness and darkness attracts visual attention, which creates an emotional appeal as well.

From Low to High Standard Living Due to the high density and low construction quality in the historic area, the most of the current buildings have poor earthquake resistance performance and fire safety problems. First of all, the construction quality should be improved and some existing should be demolished to lower the density. Second, the architectural layout can be rearranged and made more flexible, concrete construction or steel structure helps to reduce the density. Third, vertical parking lot is introduced to the site because of the limited construction area. Still, the facade of parking lot continues the historic language and keep the consistence.

Photography Photography for me is not only about images. It is about the feelings you have had, the places you have been, the books you have read, and the people you have loved. Photographs capture a moment that has gone forever. But when you see them, it still tells you stories of the past.

Suzhou, 2012

When photography meets architecture, they together make art within art. Architectural photography for me, it comes with light and space, black and white. As explained by Joel Tjintjelaar, with the removal of colour, the essence of objects, situations, sceneries and people can become more visible. No colours that will seduce the eye, only emotion that will capture the heart.

London, 2014
