空 城 記 Asylum for Ridiculous Urbanization Drama

A TALE OF EMPTY CITY _Beijing The process of urbanization allows great things happen in China, as well as ridiculous things. People leave their hometowns and families behind to work in big city. Rural areas, what Chairmen Mao thought as the most important part of China, became empty; while big cities are more and more crowded. Urbanization causes unevenly distribution of life. Relatively speaking, urbanization is temporary. It is a show performed, as well as watched by the public. This project – A Tale of Empty City is identifying/representing ridiculous urbanization phenomena, and designing an asylum - a stage, for the urbanization drama. Born in Caochangdi, one of numerous urban villages in Beijing, the stage is a mobile performing machine inviting everyone to perform, to watch to experience. It travels around the capital to transform places to temporary theater, aiming at provoking rethink of urbanization.

The main idea of the project is practicing the

Genealogy of component development

concept that, instead of serving as a tool to solve problem, design is innovation, which means rigorous analysis and always trying to seek for more opportunities. It is dynamical and non-linear, blurring the line between thinking and doing. Inspired by studies of Robinia Pseudoacacia, idea of designing the initial component is to recreate spin. Through deformations and agglomerations of the component, this project is trying to explore more possibility to form volume, which could be a new method to define spaces.

This project is based on the concept that close reading and critical analysis of significant works of architecture are vital aspects of architectural production. The attitude toward historical precedents is not one of quotation, but one of invention vides a critical framework from which to generate architectural

proposition. Through critical analysis and understanding of the iconic house – Villa Bianchi (by Giuseppe Terragni, 1936-1937, Seveso, Italy) , the objective is to designing a residential house compositionally articulate and functional. The new design is related to the urban environment and to be composed in a way that is related to given functional program.

This project attempted to create an architectural event, through an object whose materiality goes through a process of change after it is installed in a field. Through being at once foreign to and of the space it inhabits, the object becomes a singularity within that field. The elements

MEDIATED DISSOLUTION A video installation on display at the Red Bull House of Art A dissolving chandelier of cotton candy was installed at the Lee Plaza Hotel in Detroit by Filamentary Design Collective. A new video of the event is on display at the Red Bull House of Art in Detroit. The project proposes an alternative way of engaging with derelict buildings. The video features imagery intended to evoke the sublime. The project uses cotton candy, a light-weight, fragile material, which is subject to the pressures of the site. Filamentary Design Collective, founded in 2013, is a group of designers that creates objects out of fragile, lightweight materials and installs them in locations throughout south-eastern Michigan.
