Having toured the world, Whitney now helps others own a little piece of one of its most beautiful cities. Like Whitney Baxter Davis, you can travel the world and never find a city quite like San Francisco. Unique neighborhoods. Breathtaking views. Remarkable people. Who wouldn’t want to own a piece of San Francisco? Whether it’s your first home or just your latest, you’re making a sizeable investment. Whitney takes pleasure in helping people find and purchase the home of their dreams, in the city they love. And as a longtime resident of the City himself, Whitney is honored to have had the opportunity to support the Art for AIDS Auction for the past 13 years.

Whitney Davis has supported Art for AIDS since the

Whitney Davis and Benny Garcia — Gold Circle Donors At Art for AIDS, it doesn’t take much to find out why some guests are wearing gold circles on their lapels. Ask any of them, and they’ll beam: “We’re guests of Whitney Davis and Benny Garcia.” If you thought FOB was a hot moniker, check out FOW+B! Joyful and generous, Benny’s motto is “Be happy and help others.” In contrast, Whitney appears the more serious of the two, but what Benny conveys through cheer, Whitney transmits through charm and attentiveness. Together for 21 years, their love and admiration for one another is palpable. And, as a couple, they have donated more than $120,000 to the Alliance Health Project by sponsoring Art for AIDS. When Benny’s partner, Andrew Foxwell, tragically died of AIDS in 1993, Benny knew he had to do something to honor Andrew’s life. When he learned about Art for AIDS, he knew he’d found exactly the right cause: Andrew, one of the owners of Ivy’s Restaurant, was an avid art collector and philanthropist. Neither Benny, still in mourning, nor Whitney, just over a seven-year relationship, were looking to date at the time they met. But an initial chance meeting at a bar—remember, cheer meets charm—grew into a fast friendship and, soon after, a romance. On their 20th anniversary, trying to decide how to celebrate in a special way, they took the plunge and got married under the rotunda of San Francisco’s City Hall.

On the surface, it looks as if Whitney is all business and Benny all play, but Benny has devoted his professional career to non-profits for more than 35 years, trading the profits of the corporate world for the benefits of being of service and doing good. Whitney, got into real estate after a close friend asked him, “why aren’t you in real estate?” Both Whitney’s mom and grandfather are in the business. That question became some of what Whitney claims to be the best advice he ever received. And his “no A-hole policy” explains why he remains friends with every one of his clients. You don’t have to talk to either one of them for long before you learn how much they love what they do.

Andrew’s. And we really like that the event is not somber.” Instead, it’s “a really exciting celebration that supports HIV/AIDS services.” Whitney added, “We feel like we are making a real difference, and are happy to bring attention to the fact that HIV/AIDS is still an issue in our community.”

Art for AIDS is only one vehicle for Benny and Whitney’s generosity. They also host two annual nights out at Basil Canteen, with cocktails and dinner included and a monthly happy hour where the drinks are, invariably, on them. In addition, they contribute generously to many other non-profits, like ArtSpan and AIDS LifeCylcle.

Donors like Whitney and Benny, who take us into their family— bringing friends, buying art, donating money— are what keep AHP strong and healthy. Cheer and charm, business and play: Garcia and Davis deliver themselves to their friends as a package, a dynamic duo of loyalty, kindness, generosity, and support. For 21 years their circle of friends has, fortunately, included AHP.

When asked why they chose AHP, Benny said, “[Dr.] Jim Dilley (AHP Executive Director) was a friend of

That’s why their guests wear those gold circle stickers—as a badge of pride. Thank you both! n

Together, we are a community that makes a difference!

C

elebrated artist Rex Ray died in February 2015. A major force in Bay Area art, literary, and activist communities, Ray was recognized for his collage pop aesthetic and his generosity. Ray gave back to his communities, donating his work to arts organizations and benefits throughout the city. He supported Art for AIDS for more than a decade.

Among those who exhibited his work were the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, University Art Museum in Berkeley, San Jose Museum of Modern Art, Crocker Museum in Sacramento, and Museum of Contemporary Art in Denver, and, in San Francisco, at ArtHaus, Gallery 16, and Cheryl Haines Gallery.

AHP Community Advisory Board Kate Shumate, Chair

The team at the Alliance Health Project thanks you for your support of Art for AIDS. We thank the many sponsors, event partners, artists, donors, and galleries who give so generously, and the dozens of volunteers who give their time, expertise, and resources to help build and run this event.

As a token of our gratitude and affection, AHP dedicates Art for AIDS 2015 to him.

Savor the food and beverage artistry as well. Each morsel and pour was also donated to enhance your artviewing experience.

In addition to his paintings, Ray was well known for designing more than 100 concert posters for Bill Graham Presents, including for shows by The Rolling Stones, Patti Smith, REM, Bjork, U2, and Radiohead. He did graphic work for Apple, DreamWorks, Sony Music, Warner Brothers, and City Lights Publishers. In fact, Writing for ArtSlant last year on the occasion of a Rex Ray solo show at Gallery 16, Kara Q. Smith wrote, “[These latest works] reflect a zenith of Ray’s prolific body of work, beaming proudly forward . . . Ray’s unrelenting need to create beauty . . . .” For all of us in the AHP and Art for AIDS communities, this beauty was palpable in both the artist’s work and spirit. At Art for AIDS, there is always a bidding war for Ray’s pieces. We are honored to be auctioning one of his prints, donated by his friend and gallerist Griff Williams of Gallery 16. 5

Benefiting HIV/AIDS Services rt for AIDS benefits the UCSF Alliance Health Project (AHP). AHP provides a broad range of

mental health, substance abuse, and HIV prevention and counseling services to those living with HIV/AIDS and those at risk of infection. AHP has been serving this community for 31 years.

Founded in 1984 as the AIDS Health Project, AHP has been an international model in HIV prevention, counseling, and testing. AHP assists nearly 6,500 San Francisco clients every year and provides continuing HIV education and support to front-line professionals nationwide. AHP is San Francisco’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) community mental health clinic, serving uninsured and underinsured San Franciscans. AHP offers LGBTQaffirming individual psychotherapy services, ongoing psychiatric clinical care, including medication evaluation and

monitoring, substance use counseling, support groups and crisis interventions. We also provide free HIV testing and STI screening at our services center and mobile test sites. We rely on your generosity and participation in Art for AIDS to support our HIV/ AIDS programs. While affiliated with UCSF, AHP receives no program funding from the university, and instead must rely on a combination of grants and contributions from corporations, private foundations, government contracts and the generosity of individual donors, like you, to fund our programs.

Silent Auction—YELLOW Section closes at 7:45 pm Drawings & Prints Note: As with most prints, dimensions are for the image size. Sheet size is larger and available upon request. Please go to the gallery at artforaids.org to view larger images and read artist statements. Drawings may include pastels, charcoal, ink, pen, pencil, marker and oil stick (and others) applied to canvas, linen, paper, board or panels, glass or other material. Prints—the general term for works that are produced

in “multiples,” that is, using techniques that can result in more than one copy of the artwork—may include lithographs, silk screens, etchings or drypoints. Prints show number and edition size, eg: 3/50. Computers, scanners and laser printing have broadened the range of print techniques. Terms such as Lassengraphs, Iris prints, Giclée prints (and others) refer to these reproduction processes supervised by artists and technicians to assure a final product that will aptly represent the original. Adding value to these latter processes, as well as to traditional prints, is the inclusion of an artist signature, numbering, and limited editions of works. We avoid prints that are photographs of work originally created in another medium. n

The descriptions may not cover all of the materials and techniques employed by the artist. Photographs may be cibachrome or gelatin silver prints.
