The Alliance française is a worldwide cultural network dedicated to the promotion of French and francophone cultures. In China, the Alliance française has created a unique operating model working in close partnership with Chinese universities. Their fifteen satellites are self-financing non-profit associations. Network in China

It is the Alliance française’s mission to promote the French language as well as francophone cultures and to encourage cultural, intellectual and artistic exchanges between China and French-speaking countries. The Alliance française has no political or religious aďŹƒliations. In China, the network is governed by a status conferred upon Chinese-foreign cooperatively-run schools, established by the Chinese government in 2003. Each centre is thus associated with a local partner university, implementing a model not used in any of the Alliance française centres in the world.

The Alliance française, having a continued local presence, proves to be an invaluable intermediary to French territorial authorities when leading cooperation projects in China. Launched in 2006, this project has enabled Chinese students from Shandong to receive training in the Pays de la Loire and ambitious cultural events have been organised.

A Global reach

For over a century, the Alliance française has developed its network in order to promote francophone cultures all over the world. Its deep local entrenchment and understanding of local realities have allowed the Alliance française to adapt to China’s growing need to exchange with Francophone countries. The Alliance française Foundation, based in Paris, represents the core of this global network.

The Alliance française Foundation

The Alliance française Foundation was established in Paris on the 27th of July 2007. Recognised as a non-profit public service provider, the foundation has resumed the Alliance française de Paris’ historical mission. The foundation is at the heart of over a thousand Alliance française centres in 133 countries, welcoming 500 000 students in their classrooms and over 6 million spectators at their cultural events. The Foundation’s goals : •Federating and driving the Alliance française network •Providing expertise, training and advice •Offering a cultural alternative to globalisation by highlighting cultural diversity

The Alliance: a century in China At the beginning of the twentieth century, committees were formed in Beijing, Shanghai, Canton and Tianjin, then in Fuzhou and in Qingdao. However, at the end of the 1940’s, Alliance Française started gradually disappearing from China. The Alliance française in Hong Kong is founded in 1953 and rapidly grew to become a great success. Subsequently, a centre was founded in Macao in 1987. In 1989, Chinese authorities expressed their wish to open the educational field to partnerships with foreign countries. The Alliance française once again started creating centres, first in Canton in 1989, then Shanghai in 1993 and Beijing in 1996. Since 2000, drawing on its success, the Alliance française has rapidly expanded in China. A Delegate General, a representative from the Alliance française Foundation was appointed in 1999. Approximately ten centres have since been created. 4

Today, the Alliance française serves as a reference in the field of French as a foreign language teaching. The fact that the diplomas awarded by this institution are recognised by the French Ministry of Education as well as by European groups such as ALTE (Association of Language Testers in Europe), proves this point eloquently.

Courses on offer The Alliance française offers intensive or extensive classes, during the day or in the evening, during the week or over the weekend. It caters for all levels, from basic speaker (A1 of the CEFR) to proficient speaker (C1 of the CEFR). Over and above general French lessons, many different workshops are offered: grammar, phonetics, civilisation, literature, TV5 Monde, conversation, singing, etc.

The method In China, the majority of the teachers are French, but there are also Chinese, Belgian or Canadian nationals. They are all professional ‘French as a Foreign Language’ (FLE) teachers.

When one learns a foreign language, it is to use it as a means of communication. That is why, at the Alliance française, the first levels are mostly orientated towards oral communication and the methods are based on the student’s participation. Subsequently, the students improve their writing skills through comprehension and writing activities. From the outset, students work on both oral and written comprehension and expression. For increased efficiency, students are divided into small groups.

The originality of the Alliance française lies in its missions, which consist in developing both French language teaching and a taste for Francophone cultures in the world. Through these two fundamental missions, along with the promotion of artists and local cultures, the Alliance française offers a 'cultural alternative'. The Alliance française works in close relationship with the French Embassy’s Cultural Services, foreign embassies and consulates in China, the most prestigious Chinese cultural institutions as well as with numerous partner businesses.

Following this philosophy of partnerships and exchanges, the Alliance française has taken an active part in the France-China Exchange years, and participates in the annual Croisements/Jiaoliu Festival as well as in the International Francophone Week. These events do not only target Chinese students studying French, but also the entire francophone and Francophile community.

成都法语联盟建立于2003年，为法国在华机构的西进奠定了有力的 基础。它落户于中国最宜居的城市之一—成都市，这里拥有丰富的地域文 化。同时它也是随后进驻成都法国机构的排头兵：法国驻成都总领事馆 （2005），蒙彼利埃之家（2006年，于1981年成都与蒙彼利埃结为友好 城市），法国教育服务中心（2007）和法语学校（2009）。

广州法语联盟是中华人民共和国境内成立最早的法语联盟（1989 年）。之后其创办者也参与促成了上海和北京法语联盟的成立。

The first Alliance française founded in the Popular Republic in 1989, was that of Canton. The Alliance française of Canton, situated in the central district of Dongshan since 1999, occupies a surface of 1564 m2. This Alliance has numerous partnerships: for instance with Canton’s French Chamber of Commerce and Industry in China for the promotion of diplomas in professional French, and more generally for the promotion of France in Southern China. CHENGDU : Due West In 2003, the creation of the Alliance française of Chengdu was an essential step towards the expansion of French presence in Western China. The Alliance is the first element of a large local French network: General Consulate (2005); Maison of Montpellier, Chengdu’s sister city (2006); CampusFrance Centre (2007) and French School (2009). The Alliance française of Chengdu is very active in developing the collaboration between French and Chinese universities. Approximately 600 students study under about 30 teachers. The Alliance of Chongqing, opened in 2008, is the first institution dedicated to cultural and linguistic cooperation created on Chongqing’s Language Teaching and International Studies campus. The Alliance has 1000m2 at its disposal for use by 700 students per week. It is also a resource center for the French teachers. The Alliance of Dalian, created in 2004 welcomes children, pupils, students and adults.It also represents Dalian’s sister city, Le Havre. The Alliance of Dalian opened two annexes in Shenyang, capital of Liaoning. The Dalian University of Foreign Languages is a reference in terms of French language teaching. Thanks to the University’s renown, the Alliance organises the famous French singing competition as well as teacher training, in which the twelve Chinese Universities offering French studies participate. 香港的法语学生（每年约七千人）与中国大陆的法语学生目的有所 不同，他们最重视的并不是一纸证书或计划法国留学，他们对法文的学 习兴趣大部分是来自他们对法国的旅游、奢侈品工业和文化的热爱。

The Alliance française of Hangzhou (100m2), opened in 2008, is situated in China’s arts, design and animation hub : the city of Hangzhou. In 2010, 780 students bought more than 75 000 class hours, and more than 4000 spectators attended 55 cultural events. Its most emblematic events are : - The Week of the French-speaking world (March) : Lectures, concerts. - The Spring Poetry Festival (April) : Poetry readings accompanied by music, videos or paintings. - The French day at the Hangzhou Animation Festival (May) : Lectures, exhibitions of comics, dedications and viewings. - The French Film Festival (November/December) : in partnership with Embassy, Star Lights and Chifran. The Alliance of Hong Kong has welcomed approximately 200 000 students since opening in 1953. The Alliance is perceived as an integral part in the cultural and community life. The interest that students from Hong Kong show (7000 students per year) in learning French is based on a fascination for France linked to travelling, culture and the luxury goods industry. Its « French Cinepanorama » is probably the oldest film festival in Hong Kong. In 2011, it will celebrate its 40th Anniversary. The Alliance also presents French May, a cultural highlight which will celebrate its 20th edition in 2012. The Alliance publishes a magazine, Paroles, which is the only bilingual French-Chinese cultural review.

JINAN : Decentralised cooperation

The Alliance française of Shandong-Jinan, founded in 2006, is based at the Jinan cathedral’s outhouses, only a few meters from the University of Shandong’s old campus. In 2009, the AF welcomed more than 500 students and covers an area of 400m2. This Alliance is supported by the French « Pays de la Loire » region. This partnership makes provision for the setting up of the city’s first media library, cooperation programs with universities and cultural events dedicated to artists from the « Pays de la Loire ».

MACAU : One of a kind in the region The Alliance française of Macao, founded in 1987 is the only foreign language institute of this kind in a multicultural and multilingual environment. The AF covers a surface of 250m2 and is situated in the city’s historical district. Four sessions lasting three months each are organised for over a 1000 enrolments per year. 75% of the students learn French as a hobby, for self-enrichment, to open up to another culture and not for professional or educational reasons.

Every year the Alliance of Nanjing, opened in 2002, trains several hundred Chinese students selected by prestigious French engineering schools, for Nanjing is amongst the five major university centres in China (along with Beijing, Hong Kong, Shanghai and Wuhan). The CampusFrance agency informs students on engineering programmes, participates in the promotion of the schools and helps the students to plan for their studies.
