HICAPS LONG-TERM VISION: EMPOWERING HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONALS In the busy healthcare setting, where convenience, familiarity and efficiency are paramount, healthcare professionals deserve a seamless transaction process that supports their tireless work. At HICAPS, we have a clear long-term vision: to empower health professionals by simplifying financial transactions, whether involving patients, government schemes or insurers. We understand the hard work of our allied health professionals and believe that the future of healthcare transactions should be as straightforward as a click of a button. As the healthcare landscape continues to evolve, so must the tools that empower its practitioners. HICAPS is committed to being at the forefront of this transformation, ensuring that the transaction processes are frictionless and hassle-free for our hard-working healthcare professionals.

Understanding and respecting the pivotal role we play in facilitating transactions for healthcare professionals is central to our mission. For the past 25 years, HICAPS has been a trusted partner to over 97,000 allied health professionals across Australia. We’ve dedicated ourselves to simplifying and streamlining claiming so that healthcare practitioners can focus on what they do best: caring for their patients. Our commitment extends beyond transaction processing; it’s about being a reliable and innovative partner that empowers healthcare professionals to manage payments and claiming with confidence and ease.

INTRODUCING THE TRINITY TERMINAL: SETTING A NEW STANDARD

PIONEERING THE FUTURE: WHAT DOES THE FUTURE OF HEALTHCARE CLAIMING LOOK LIKE?

At HICAPS, we’re excited to announce the rollout of our latest innovation, the Trinity Terminal. Representing the gold standard in healthcare terminal, the Trinity terminal offers an even better experience for our users. With features designed to enhance efficiency, security and ease of user, the Trinity terminal represents a significant leap forward in healthcare terminals.

Our commitment to innovation doesn’t end with the Trinity Terminal or the acquisition of Lantern Pay. HICAPS is leading the charge in the digital transformation of healthcare claiming. We are working towards a future where healthcare transactions can be completed seamlessly, without the need for physical terminals or cards.

The Trinity terminal allows you to process fast claims from 100% of Australian Private Health Insurers, Medicare and Overseas Visitor Health Cover, in addition to approved treatments for ICWA and WorkSafe Victoria. With its multimerchant facility, you can easily manage the transaction flows of multiple businesses and contractors in the same practice.

EXPANDING OUR HORIZONS: HICAPS ACQUISITION OF LANTERN PAY We recognize the need for comprehensive solutions that go beyond traditional terminal-based processes. That’s why HICAPS acquired Lantern Pay, a platform designed to help health professionals complete fast invoicing and claiming from state government recovery schemes. This strategic move allows us to offer a broader range of services, helping allied health professionals navigate the intricacies of government schemes such as NDIS, ICWA, TAC, WorkCover Queensland and WorkSafe Victoria; and ensuring they receive timely compensation for their services. It’s another step in our journey to simplify the financial aspects of healthcare practice, supporting our hardworking healthcare professionals.

Imagine a world where all claiming and transactions can be accomplished swiftly, speeding up processes and reconciliation times. HICAPS is actively working towards this future, ensuring that healthcare professionals have more time to focus on their patients and less time worrying about reconciliation. In closing, we want to express our deepest gratitude to all the allied health professionals who have entrusted us to be their claiming partner. Your trust in HICAPS drives us to continuously innovate and improve our services. We recognize the hard work and dedication you put into keeping our society healthy, and we are committed to supporting you every step of the way. The road ahead promises exciting opportunities and challenges in healthcare, and HICAPS is dedicated to being you unwavering partner in navigating these changes. With the Trinity terminal, our HICAPS Digital Claims portal and our vision for the future, we are excited to embark on this journey with you, ensuring that healthcare transactions remain a seamless and effortless aspect of your practice.

Brendan Atkin studied Osteopathy at Victoria University, completed a diploma of Paediatric Osteopathy at the Osteopathic centre for children in London, and completed a Masters in Animal Osteopathy at the University of Wales. Together we founded a clinic devoted to the care of paediatric and pregnant patients. Brendan simultaneously worked with dogs and cats from East West Veterinary Clinic and travelled extensively to treat elite sports horses. Brendan contributed to an animal osteopathic text book and was genuinely fulfilled by teaching osteopathy at both an undergraduate and post graduate level. He was an osteopath, an entrepreneur, a mentor and a valued friend and colleague. He used his immense skill to dedicate his life to the pursuit of helping others through study and teaching. Brendan’s commitment to quality patient care throughout his career was always enhanced by relationships and mutual respect formed with a network of other allied health professionals. In both his professional and personal life, Brendan was incredibly patient and always present. If you were with him you knew you had his full attention. It was this attribute combined with his meticulous approach and intelligence that allowed him to quickly develop strong and trusted connections, ultimately providing the best possible outcomes for his patients. In 2017 Brendan had a waterskiing accident where he fractured C1, this left him with an incredibly cruel and debilitating condition known as Hemicrania Continua. Brendan and I developed a transcutaneous vagal nerve stimulator – the “Inflammod” – as part of our endless quest for relief and treatment. It was Brendan’s dream to help as many patients as possible with this device, especially after his first-hand experience with suffering. This invention is a legacy of his intelligence, aptitude, and determination for which he can be incredibly proud. Devastatingly, Brendan’s life was recently cut far too short. Following the diagnosis of a malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumour in his right tibial nerve in 2022, Brendan underwent a trans-tibial amputation and with clear margins it was hoped that this procedure would be curative, however distant metastasis were discovered shortly afterward.

Brendan Atkin Brendan Atkin BSc (Clin Sci) MHSc (Osteo) DipPaedOst (London) MSc Animal Osteopathy GradCertTerEd MSCCO

Despite this diagnosis, and the extraordinary challenges that lay ahead of him, Brendan retained an unwavering grace and fortitude in the face of adversity. Although devastated with the diagnosis, he was never one to complain but rather to listen and learn, always with a smile and a laugh. His unbending resolve and positivity meant that he had soon built a wonderful team of doctors and allied health professionals around him. This team of OTs, Physiotherapists, Prosthetists, EPs, Psychologists and Osteopaths combined forces with Brendan’s knowledge and attitude allowing him to be back seeing patients, mentoring colleagues, running, stand up paddle-boarding and riding horses, all in a remarkably short period of time. His tenacity for rehabilitation was as inspirational as it was gruelling, painful and unrelenting – and it was the support and friendship that he received from his team that was a source of deep appreciation and love. As in his professional life, through this time he embraced the advice he received from this team of experts, and he continued to fight with every resource available. Through all of this adversity, his zest for life shone bright. Brendan was the most amazing, loving and devoted husband. He remained deeply committed to himself and the battle he faced, to his family and friends, and incredibly through it all – to helping his patients in their own times of need. Brendan will be remembered for this incredible loving devotion, to me, our family and friends. He will be equally remembered for his dedication to his patients and his craft. Along with his intelligence, positivity, enthusiasm, and creativity. It was this commitment to life that made him so incredibly respected by all of his patients, students, peers, family and friends. He is fondly remembered, and greatly missed. I wish Brendan was here to accept this award, he would be deeply honoured.

Allison Atkin

Brendan was ‘that’ practitioner…you know, the one that when you’re in their presence makes you think …. “One day, I want to be like him”. He embraced Osteopathy in all its domains – the patients, the students, the clinicians, the knowledge, the profession with passion and enthusiasm. He distilled and honed his craft to make maximum impact and then shared his expertise and devotion to helping those in need to every person he came across and in every corner of the world where he could be of service.

Brendo’s generosity, patience and experience were the qualities that made him a great educator. A true advocate of osteopathy, Brendo would frequently give back to the profession through his devotion to teaching. He completed a Graduate Certificate in Tertiary Education and his teaching roles included working at VU as a clinical supervisor and a lecturer in obstetrics and paediatrics. He delivered lectures in equine osteopathy and was also a faculty member for both the Sutherland Cranial Teaching Foundation and Rule of Artery.

His gentle support, infectious enthusiasm, expansive intellect and humble manner guided myself and many others to become ‘that’ practitioner for ourselves… and hopefully for others we have the good fortune to lead and influence. Brendo was a rare human – deep understanding of humans and humanity, a total lack of ego, childlike wonder and delight in the complexity of the human body and the ability to convey it all with grace and humour. His loss to our profession and the wider world is enormous. Kate Caine

Brendan was a rare blend of intellect and humility, ever committed to his love for osteopathy. His diverse qualifications in pediatric and animal osteopathy set him apart as an unparalleled mentor in his field. As an educator, he nurtured the next generation of osteopaths, imparting knowledge with passion and grace. Brendan’s legacy isn’t just his professional accomplishments, which are numerous, but also his enduring qualities—his patience, genuine presence, and resilience. Even while facing personal health challenges, Brendan remained steadfast, inventing a nerve stimulator, the “Inflammod,” showcasing his persistent quest to alleviate suffering. His untimely loss leaves an indelible void, yet his influence resonates in the lives he touched, the students he mentored, and the profession he enriched. There is no greater legacy than to be remembered for the service you provided others and for that he will be profoundly missed. Jade Scott

Brendan was the epitome of perseverance and always stayed curious. His ability to absorb new information and communicate it to his patients and colleagues in a clear and concise way was excellent. He was a true holistic practitioner, seeing the patient as a whole, providing care and empathy while striving to achieve the best results possible for his patients.

At AIM osteopathy, Brendo was passionate about taking interns and graduates under his wing. A great mentor to not only budding osteopaths, but also his patients and peers. As an educator his wealth of knowledge was humbling but Brendo always remained humble. To borrow the words of pioneering osteopath, Dr Sutherland, Brendo was a true digger and dreamer. He never stopped learning and was constantly innovating and honing his skills in the art of osteopathy. Brendo was held in such high regards by his peers - many of whom cite his professionalism and fierce sense of duty to his patients among his top qualities. Doug Wong

Matt Healy

Brendan was gentle and genuine. He had a deep understanding of the human body and how he could use his osteopathic skills to create change in people. He underwent post-graduate training in both paediatric osteopathy and animal osteopathy (simultaneously, no less) which may make him the most diversely qualified osteopath in the country - or maybe the world?! His passion for learning was endless, he shared his knowledge through education and if you were lucky enough to be one of his patients, you could be assured you were undoubtedly in the best hands. Brendo is sorely missed as a friend, and by all of the Australian Osteopathic profession. Elizabeth Dwyer

Brendo, was an inspiration and a fighter to the end. His keen observation of the Health was an example for us all. He dedicated your life to service and did it with such calm precision and patience. I would like to quote Allison in saying “ he treated so much in the fluid, and both animals and babies responded so well to that. So beautiful to watch and so amazing to learn from, his hands, his patience and what he could sense always inspired me”. We will all miss such gentle knowing hands. In the short time that he had, he achieved so much and has left such an amazing legacy. He will be greatly missed. Andrew Nguyen
