FEATURED STORY: SBDC & CHEESY STUFFED BURGERS, A LOCAL SUCCESS STORY

“Entrepreneurship is about the execution of the right ideas,” says Mark Encke, co-owner of Cheesy Stuffed Burgers. “It takes a dream and a blueprint to make it a reality.”

Mark had the dream, but the Small Business Development Center (SBDC) had the blueprint. From its conception, Cheesy Stuffed Burgers was built alongside the SBDC every step of the way.

Owned by husband and wife, Mark and Janice Encke, and long-time friend Devan Elkins, the Cheesy Stuffed trio has put a lot of love into the creation of the food and friendships that nurtured its beginnings.

“We’re just a couple of guys that stumbled onto a great product,” Mark said. “We’re really grateful to be here.”

Early iterations of Cheesy Stuffed offerings were in fact inspired by Janice’s cooking.

“I don’t like big, bland burgers,” Mark said. “My wife started marinating burgers and stuffing them with cheese. It was flavorful and delicious and I thought ‘this is it!'"

With a self-declared “rough

"Cheesy Stuffed would never exist if it wasn’t for the SBDC.” past” and a few failed attempts to go back to college, Mark didn’t know he would become a business owner. After 10 years of working at Red Robin, he began classes at LBCC to try and pave a different path for his future.

At LBCC, he stumbled across a Going Into Business seminar offered by the SBDC. In that seminar, Mark realized that he already had the product and that the SBDC could help turn it into a business.

“I’m an opportunist, an entrepreneur, a nice guy - but I’m not that sophisticated,” he said.

“That’s where the guys at the SBDC come in.”

Six years later, Cheesy Stuffed now has a food truck in Corvallis and Albany, and a storefront in Corvallis opened this May. They are also an exclusive vendor at Reser Stadium.

The SBDC is now helping Cheesy Stuffed in their next phase of business - consulting with franchise specialists. The trio feels their hands are full with the current locations they manage, but with a goal to still grow the business, franchising the brand is a natural next step.
