When they aren’t at class you’ll find Roadrunners enjoying great food prepared by Culinary Arts or hanging out at the Roast Runners Coffee House. Student athletes compete on award-winning sports teams for LBCC, and many students participate in music and theater programs. There are more than 30 clubs to get involved with – from the Student Council to Space Exploration. Along with the main campus in Albany, the college offers six locations including centers in Corvallis, Lebanon and Sweet Home. Here’s how it works: You can take classes at either LBCC or your university, or even both at the same time. Pay for College
For most students, thinking of how to pay for college can be a bit overwhelming. At LBCC, students can access a variety of resources to help them to not only pay for college – but to stay on their college path. SCHOLARSHIPS – FREE MONEY FOR COLLEGE LBCC students can access more than $400,000 in scholarships (money they don’t have to pay back) to help cover college expenses including tuition, books, fees and more. These scholarships are not just for students with perfect grades – they are designed to help all deserving students who need an extra boost. Caring members of the community provide the funds. LBCC Foundation Scholarship applications are open twice a year, in the spring and fall. Spring applications for the 2020-2021 school year are open to admitted students from February 24 through April 13. Applications are online at: www.linnbenton.edu/scholarships LBCC ROADRUNNER RESOURCE CENTER – HELPING STUDENTS STAY IN COLLEGE For students who are already attending classes at LBCC and who may need a little extra help, the Roadrunner Resource Center helps students stay on their college path by providing connections to local resources. Resources include help with childcare, food, emergency housing, emergency grant funds, healthcare, utilities and more. Find out more at: www.linnbenton.edu/RRC
TALENT GRANTS, OPPORTUNITY GRANTS, AND PELL GRANTS – MORE FREE MONEY FOR COLLEGE Students who participate in co-curricular programs, or are part of the Student Leadership Council, may be eligible for Talent Grants which help cover college expenses. For students who have an exceptional financial need, the Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant may be an option, administered through the college Financial Aid office. Financial aid eligible students may also qualify for Federal Pell Grants. Again this is money you don’t have to pay back. Pell Grants are awarded based on family need and cost of attendance. The Oregon Opportunity Grant is another option for students who need help to pay for college. www.linnbenton.edu/financialaid CWE, WORK STUDY, AND LOW-COST TEXTBOOKS LBCC cooperative work experience (CWE) and work study positions help students offset the cost of college through work. In addition, many LBCC classes now offer low-cost and no-cost textbook options through the college library’s Open Education Resources – which helps students to avoid large textbook costs. www.linnbenton.edu/financialaid
LBCC hosts “Financial Aid Saturday” events to help students and parents navigate paying for college As a service to the community, LBCC sponsored two free Financial Aid Saturday events in January and February for students planning to attend college and for their families. Because LBCC champions EVERY student path to college, these events were open to anyone seeking higher education, no matter where they planned to attend. LBCC staff helped students and parents fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Workshops were also available to participants, which covered scholarship opportunities through the LBCC Foundation and the Oregon State Office of Student Access and Completion (OSAC). LBCC’s Center for Accessibility Resources (CFAR) also held workshops to help students learn about accommodations available to them on campus. The events will be repeated in the 2020-2021 school year. Shelly Garrett MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP 6
Lebanon High School grads are first to receive $1,000 Shelly Garrett Memorial Scholarships Hunter Hutchins and Elizabeth Koch, 2019 Lebanon High School graduates, are the first to receive memorial scholarships established in honor of Lebanon community champion Shelly Garrett. A true advocate of education and business, Garrett, who passed away in 2019, served as executive director of the Lebanon Chamber of Commerce and as a member of the LBCC Board of Education. She was instrumental in bringing a variety of building projects to Lebanon, including LBCC’s Advanced Transportation Technology Center. After Shelly passed away, her friends established a Memorial Scholarship fund in her honor, through the LBCC Foundation. The funds are specifically designed to help students from Lebanon and East Linn County attend college. Meet the two students who exemplify Shelly’s commitment to the community.

Straight A’s Pay Off as Student Strives to be the Best Hunter Hutchins knows what it takes to make the grade. As a straight “A” student and high school Valedictorian – he always put in the extra time and effort it takes to study and be successful. Now that he’s in college, he plans to continue on that path as he earns his associate’s degree in LBCC’s Heavy Equipment Diesel program. From his earliest memories, Hunter has been working on cars, helping his dad fix and maintain the family vehicles. As he grew older, his interest in auto mechanics grew. That interest was key in his choice of career path at LBCC. The LBCC Foundation supports students like Hunter, who is paying his own way through college while working for Complete Ag Resolutions in Shedd. “I’m honored to be one of the first to receive the Shelly Garrett scholarship, and I want to thank the people who made the scholarship possible. I know Shelly was a big supporter of bringing the Advanced Transportation Center to Lebanon, so it’s great to be part of that,” said Hunter. With a goal to become one of the best diesel mechanics in the state, Hunter has his work cut out for him as he strives to make the grade and be the best that he can be. Fall term was his first in college, and he got a 4.0 GPA.

“
Ever since she was a teenager, Elizabeth Koch’s dream was to become a grade school teacher, a passion she discovered while earning extra money babysitting. She has seen herself as a teacher ever since. Upon graduating from Lebanon High School, and sure of her career path, Elizabeth decided to take the next steps toward realizing her dream – coming straight to LBCC to earn an associate’s degree in Early Childhood Education. Working at the Boys and Girls Club in Lebanon to help pay her way, and with a goal to finish her degree on time, Elizabeth applied for scholarships through the LBCC Foundation in hopes of getting the extra financial help she needed to focus on her studies. “Being awarded the scholarship has lifted so much weight off my shoulders,” she said. “Receiving the scholarship will allow me to focus on my classes and not worry so much about how to pay for the term.”
After completing her associate’s degree at LBCC, Elizabeth plans to transfer to Oregon State University to finish her bachelor’s degree in education – with a goal to become a third grade teacher. “I’m so excited to be on this path,” she said. “While babysitting, I realized that I am really good with kids and enjoy being someone they can look up to. I truly believe that teaching young students is what I was called to do in life.”
