Letter from the Editor Hey everyone! I hope that everyone had a good new year and that this first month has been treating you well. We have to keep pushing we are almost done with this school year. I know that this year it has been harder to find volunteer opportunities this year due to everything being closed down because of Covid . But the amazing board members are currently working very hard to get volunteering opportunities for everyone. So please don't worry everyone is trying their best to ensure a good rest of the year. Also, don't forget to turn in your hours, until next time -Allison Wong The Trojan Talk | Page 2
Message From the President Hey Key Clubbers! I hope you have had a great first month of 2021! This month we had a lot of volunteer projects going on from the “Bags of Hope” donation drive to the “Polar Plunge”. We even had a virtual social where we played scribbl.io together! I want to thank all of our members who have been staying engaged in the club during this crazy year during the week of distance learning and during constant quarantines. We’ve also seen craziness in the real world with the Capitol being stormed or Bernie Sanders sitting quietly on his chair. During these times I want to remind you all that even through all the chaos this year may bring, volunteering and service can help shine a light for many, including yourself.
See you next month! Salma Waheed Key Club President The Trojan Talk | Page 3
The Club's New Year Plans
By Abeer Shoaib
When I first became the board member for Animal Allies, we mainly worked with the Pet Adoption League for volunteering. However, this year has been strange, and it has been increasingly difficult to find volunteering timings that could work for everyone: students and organizations alike. I’ve noticed that I have been experiencing difficulties not only in volunteering, but also in finding animal adoption organizations that could provide service hour opportunities for everyone in Key Club. To combat this, this year I’m hoping to find and work with multiple pet adoption organizations here in Tulsa to allow for greater volunteering opportunities within multiple locations rather than having Key Clubbers rely on service hour chances within a single, limited space sign up sheet. So far, I have sent for communications with two new organizations: the Animal Rescue Foundation (ARF) House and the Humane Society of Tulsa. I am still waiting to hear from these organizations, but I hope that the reply will be soon. With Covid-19 dawning on our region, many of these agencies are struggling to find proper homes for their animals, and many have been sending word for volunteers. Additionally, I am hopeful that these new organizations will allow for a more hands-on experience with animals rather than just setting up and taking down cages, or cleaning up after the animals. I want for Key Club members to have a more insightful experience with volunteering so that gaining service hours can be an enjoyment rather than a duty. Through this, Key Club can obtain a greater number of volunteers who are ready to willingly step out and make a difference in the world, even if it’s simply by granting more animals the opportunity to feel loved in new homes. Why Did You Choose Key Club?
By Allie Turner
Hello Key Clubbers! This month of January has been a busy one indeed. We are currently still serving our Governors project which is centered around kids in foster care. Our club is collecting drawstring bags and blankets for a drive. Currently, we’re planning to expand our Books to Books for kids of all ages, so that we can reach a wider range of needs. Another thing we were able to do for our members was to have a virtual social. Despite the circumstances that are COVID19, we continue to persist to find ways to connect our members and serve our community. The Trojan Talk | Page 5
Why Key Club?
By Abigail Chow
When I first joined Key Club, I did it for the opportunities. Jenks does a fantastic job at providing the resources for students to connect with local organizations that need help. I wanted to volunteer as much as I could in order to get 200 service hours for Distinguished Service Graduate, but as I went to the monthly meetings, I discovered there was more to Key Club than just volunteering. It not only connected me to local organizations, it helped me make friends. As I sat next to new people I saw in class, but never talked to, we built new friendships, strengthened by a common interest in volunteering and helping our local communities. Before the pandemic, we made plans to go volunteer together at different events. Last year, I was able to volunteer with a couple of my friends at the annual Tulsa Greek Festival. While I was there, I saw teachers, peers, and other friends from Jenks. Knowing that I was serving my local community and contributing towards a positive experience for people I knew gave me a sense of satisfaction in my work. Even throughout the pandemic, Jenks Key Club has kept in touch with its members, providing a meeting and social event every month. You get to interact with people you wouldn't have because of the pandemic we’re in. In socials, you can play online games such as skribbl.io or among us with your Jenks peers and make new friends. Last month, I went to the social and played skribbl.io. The interaction with other students at Jenks and playing a game for thirty minutes was such a nice break from school. Key Club is a lot more than volunteering. It's serving and building relationships with your community through volunteering. The Trojan Talk | Page 6
