Books

With Buddies

Books with Buddies is a potential volunteer opportunity. High school students would read with students from Jenks West Intermediate before school (as of now, 7:45 - 8:15, but this may change) once a week. Additionally, we would like for students to volunteer consistently for several weeks.

Letter from the Editor Hey Keyclubbers! We haven't talked since last year! Sorry, I know you will hear that joke a lot, but I think it is so funny. I hope that everyone had a good winter break and that you are all wellrested and ready to start school again. I can't wait to see everyone again and make sure to be on the lookout because we will have officer elections coming up soon! I am so happy with what we have accomplished looking back on this past semester and even the past year, overcoming Covid restrictions. I can't wait to see what the rest of the semester has in store for us as we finish out this year strong.

Until next month! -Al Wong The Trojan Talk | Page 3

Message from the President Hello Key Club, I hope everyone had a joyous and restful winter break! After all your hard work, many hours of study, and diligent volunteering, you have earned it. As we jump into the new year, I encourage you to decide now that you will make volunteering a regular part of your schedule, as it is your work that gives Key Club the power to better our community. I am very excited as we move into the second semester to see what all we can accomplish. Additionally, for those who wish to become a part of the club leadership, be on the lookout for information about officer elections! Once again, thank you all for volunteering to make the world a better place.

-Thank you, and stay safe The Trojan Talk | Page 4

K2K High School

By: Shilpi Bardhan

Our Key Club organization, here at Jenks, has many amazing board projects, which allow our student body to become more involved and leave a greater impact on our community. Kids to Kids: High School is one of those board projects. The Kids to Kids service projects allow our fellow Key Clubbers to connect with other students and staff in the district through service. Kids to Kids: High School focuses on providing these service opportunities to our Key Club members at the high school campus which includes buildings 5 & 6, the Freshman Academy, Math and Science Center, Alternative Center, and the Flycatcher Trail. K2K: High School was how I, personally, got most of my service hours my freshman year. Not only was I able to help out at my own school, but as a freshman, volunteering through K2K: High School provided many opportunities to learn about the high school campus outside of the Freshman Academy, which is always a little tricky to get around as a new freshman. Although, reaching out in the community and working outside of the school district allows me to meet new people and learn more about the community, it’s always nice to come back to the high school and work with familiar faces at a familiar campus, and I hope many of the other general members feel this way as well. K2K: High School also allows students who may not be able to volunteer outside of school to knock their hours out right where they are at: school! It is also a great way to obtain school associated hours for our fellow Distinguished Service Graduate members, as all of our K2K projects are related to the school. All in all, the Kids to Kids: High School service project is a great gateway for our students to become more involved in the community through volunteering and ultimately making the world around them a better place.

Looking Back on 2021

By: Jonathan Begbie

2021 has finally come to an end, and what a year it has been. It wasn’t the year we wanted, but I think it helped us realize the importance of a lot of things. Community, friendship, and family to name a few. This year-long rollercoaster really set into place the importance of being active in your community, and I am thankful for every opportunity I had to help those around me. Every act of service counts. I am grateful for my ability to get out of my comfort zone by being a Key Club board member for the Oklahoma Aquarium again this year. I’ve been able to recruit more volunteers this year than ever before by interacting with members and getting people interested in marine life. I have also been volunteering at the aquarium much more. By coming to the aquarium on a more regular basis, I have become more familiar with the staff members and other volunteers as well, making new connections and figuring out more of how the volunteer system really works. Finally, I’m grateful for getting more involved with the Key Club community than I have in the past years. Instead of only doing minimum volunteering and going to meetings, I’ve participated in group activities, learned more about the ins and outs of Key Club, and participated in more group events. The group activities we’ve had this year were much more involving and exciting than in 2020 due to the lift of restrictions. With that being said, I have faith that 2022 will continue the path of improvement for Key Club and we will be able to grow back better than ever before.
