Letter From the Editor Hello, fellow Key Clubbers! My name is Allison Wong and I will be your 2020-2021 Key Club Editor. I know with the circumstances this year it will be harder to find volunteer hours. Don’t worry the officers are working very hard to help you get you guys the hours that you need. I can not wait to meet you all of you and get to know you guys. I hope that you guys had a good quarantine/summer and that everyone is safe. We are working hard to find you guys good hours that you can do while still staying safe. Hope to meet you soon! Allison Wong The Trojan Talk | Page 2

Message from the President Hello Jenks Key Club! I cannot tell you how excited I am to be your president this year! Even though we have been through so much this past year, you can rest assured that this coming year will be one for the books, and in a good way.

Things may have changed, but I will still do everything I can possibly do to make sure that Key Club gets you the volunteer opportunities that you need. We have a wonderful collection of officers this year who have worked very hard to keep Key Club on track. All the new ideas and important information we have will be available at our first meeting, so it is very crucial to attend. Key Club to me is not just a hub for helping people, it’s also a wonderful community of driven students who are looking for ways to participate in their community. I love Key Club because it is an organization that has a very real impact. The few hours each of you complete contribute to an impact that Key Clubbers around the world create, and that impact is invaluable to me. I encourage you all to continue to contribute and make the world a better place, one hour at a time. Wear a mask, Salma Waheed

Changes Within the Club Lily Jiang Our school district, Jenks Public Schools, has begun the school year online as a safety measure against COVID. Jenks Key Club has followed suit and moved meetings, socials, and other events online, as I’m sure many other clubs across the nation have as well. Board member applications are also a fully online process now. Before, applicants would fill out a paper form and be interviewed in person by an officer. Now, applicants are to complete an online Google Form and potentially be interviewed through an online meeting platform. Payments for membership fees have moved online as well, as Jenks has provided an easy way for students to pay club dues online. Furthermore, because LEDCON was canceled last year and Jenks Key Club did not have to spend money on it, membership dues for this year have decreased by $5. Members can get an additional $5 fee discount on any siblings that join Key Club this year. However, despite discounts and lowered membership fees, the lack of a physical interaction with students may cause difficulties with publicizing and attracting new members. Therefore, the officers have come up with methods to publicize Key Club, including social media posts and broadcasts on morning announcements. Socials have also been moved to be online. Socials are a great part of the Key Club experience, especially the community aspect as it helps members connect and bond with each other in a fun way. This year, socials will likely be in the form of online games through Zoom or Google Meets, such as skribbl.io, SpyFall, and Kahoot.

Member Recuitment Salma Waheed

Membership recruitment has become quite a challenge because of our school’s initial switch to online classes. With that being said, our club has had some wonderful ideas on how to increase membership and participation during a pandemic. The first way to recruit members is to highlight the benefits of joining. These include volunteer opportunities, leadership roles, and a wonderful community of students to belong to. There are many ways to promote these benefits, and one of the main ways we have been doing this is through a much higher social media presence. We have used Instagram and Facebook in the step but the pandemic has encouraged us to use it as a base of information for our members. By utilizing Instagram and Facebook, we can get out information about how to sign up for Key Club.As officers, we have made sure to promote Key Club on our personal social media to get the word out as well. Word of mouth by officers and other members is also another important aspect of recruiting members. We have also been using school-wide canvas announcements to our advantage to ensure that all students know about the wonderful opportunity Key Club is. This way all students at the school can learn what Key Club is, how much it costs, and when the deadline is.We have many parents and students email us about signing up for Key Club already and that tells us that our efforts are working. By directly communicating to students and parents we can ensure that all those who wish to join can do so. By advertising the many benefits of Key Club, we can hopefully promote membership and participation despite the pandemic.

Quarantine Friendly Volunteer Opportunities Evonn Annor

Throughout the year, it has become increasingly more difficult to volunteer but we have tried to provide volunteer opportunities for Key Club members to participate in. Our club has developed more opportunities for volunteering remotely that we plan to implement within the club soon. Some of these opportunities include tutoring services that will not only be offered to the high school students but will also be extended to middle school students. Apart from this, we also plan on implementing opportunities for bilingual students to translate texts or stories from one language to another, this was done last year except inperson instead of remotely. But our club could also extend this volunteer opportunity by not only translating normal texts but also informationals texts like COVID-19 guides and infographics. Another volunteer opportunity that our club plans on implementing is a “Buddy System '' where willing members will be paired with an upperclassman or lower classman and as their check in buddy throughout the year. Another online volunteer opportunity would be to volunteer with different nonprofit organizations that offer remote volunteer opportunities like video translation andtrascribing through Tedtalk and the UN or simple research tasks offered through “Zooniverse.Overall, we have strived and will keep on striving to provide all our members with something that not only suits them but will also help them stay safe during these turbulent times.
