From the Early Childhood Coordinator
Jan Owen AM (CEO, Foundation for Young Australians) spoke at the College in 2017 and 2018 about the dramatically different working world that young Australians are entering as they leave school. This seems a long way off for our students, the youngest members of the College community. However, the Early Childhood children, through their play-based inquiry learning, have been honing their skills as competent thinkers who are creative, analytical, compassionate and articulate contributors to their world. Throughout 2018 the Early Childhood children’s wondering has been the catalyst for their learning through inquiry. Their learning has been shared digitally, on Seesaw, with their parents and teachers. Pre-Primary and Kindergarten children throughout the year have been wondering about the insects and flowers they find in their gardens and at Bush School. They have answered questions such as “How long is a baby silk worm?”, “How do bees make honey?”, “Which flowers do bees like best?”, “What will this seed grow into?”, and “What will make this seed germinate quicker?”. Their learning connects to the community to make a difference. Miss Dalecki’s Pre-Primary class held a plant stall as a result of their learning about seed germination, and with the proceeds they bought hygiene products to give to homeless people through The Salvation Army. Year 1 took a deep look at where porridge comes from, including a farmer visiting and providing them with a large sack of oats. Having already created the optimum bowl of porridge for their Father’s Day Breakfast, they decided to share the oats with less fortunate people. They delivered 50 bags of oats with cooking instructions to the Parish food bank. The Early Childhood classes have recycling high on their daily agendas, with paper and food scrap recycling a norm. They initiated a joint project of collecting aluminium to send to our Service partner organisation Wheelchairs for Kids to be made into wheelchairs. Year 2 students have influenced their world as they have taken control of scripting and presenting the Early Childhood Reflections in Semester 2, making choices about what to include and showcasing their interests from their individual Learning Museum inquiries. Our Early Childhood children are well-prepared to ask questions, make decisions, find creative solutions and make a positive difference to their world.
