SENIOR SCHOOL Sport

From the Director of Sport, Health and Physical Education

2018 has been a busy year, with many different Carnivals, competitions and new initiatives for students to demonstrate skills that are essential for life beyond the College. It is incredibly positive to see the key messages and the vision of All Saints’ College Sport continuing to build our students into healthy, resilient members of the community who understand that Sport is about social and emotional development as well as physical. The Junior School Sports Captains continued to join forces with the Senior School Sports Captains, helping to lead our younger students in their interhouse Carnivals throughout 2018. It was great to see many Junior School students and staff join the Running Club this year; their enthusiasm was outstanding, and we look forward to seeing their commitment continue in 2019. In Week 2 of Term 1, all Years 7–12 students made their way to HBF Stadium to take part in the 2018 Interhouse Swimming Carnival. This was a tremendous event and solidified the positive ASC community vibe as we kicked off the 2018 academic year. Murdoch House took out the top place for 2018. In Term 2, all students in Kindergarten – Year 12 gathered on the oval to take part in our fifth Whole-of-College 2018 Interhouse Cross Country Carnival. The continued use of timing chips created a professional and competitive event, with the focus on individual bests and House spirit. Congratulations to Stirling House for winning the Senior School Champion House Trophy as well as the Whole College Trophy. The final interhouse Carnival for the year was Athletics which took place in August. We were blessed with beautiful weather which added to this amazing day. The College oval looked superb, thanks to the exceptional work of our Grounds staff, and the setup of the event by the Health and Physical Education staff and the Maintenance Team. The overall winner of the day for 2018 was Stirling House in a close-fought competition. All interhouse competitions were followed by Associated and Catholic Colleges of WA (ACC) interschool Carnivals, where our top Senior School athletes competed against students from other schools. All Saints’ competed in the ‘A’ Division Swimming and Cross Country Carnivals, and ‘B’ Division in Athletics, an achievement in itself. The athletes at these events in 2018 put on a wonderful show, with some impressive individual and team achievements. We congratulate and thank all the athletes for the way they represented our College. Additionally, a number of our students in Years 7–12 competed against other schools in School Sport WA (SSWA) and ACC competitions in a wide range of sports, both in participation-based events and events with more of a competitive edge. We are very fortunate to have a great range of students who are capable of participating in sporting events and competition for physical, social and emotional development at varying levels. Our Netball, Basketball and Rowing Community Sport programs have had a successful year, with outstanding player development, the building of camaraderie and team spirit, and fostering emotional skills such as resilience, respect and fair play. All these could be witnessed week in, week out. Well over 350 students ranging from Years 1–12 have represented the College in community competitions in 2018. The Clubs are volunteer-based, and we are very lucky to have amazing coaches, team managers and supporters, to drive our Club values. A big thank you to all parents, current students and Old Saints who act as Committee Members; without your support these Clubs would not function. We also had students playing in community Indoor Soccer and specialist Cricket coaching programs, which shows the diversity of our student interests and talents. At All Saints’ College the focus in Sport is on healthy competition and providing young people with the opportunity to build healthy habits as they prepare for life outside the College. The breadth of opportunity and growth in Sport and physical activity at the College would not be possible without the enthusiasm and commitment of all students, coaches and their families who are dedicated and supportive of our programs. The Health and Physical Education Department is very excited for 2019 and plans to develop more initiatives and programs for the College community.

SENIOR SCHOOL Outdoor Learning Programs, Exchanges & Tours

From the Head of Outdoor Learning

So many opportunities are available to All Saints’ students, and the Outdoor Learning Program (OLP) is one such opportunity. The OLP continues to build in strength every year, offering more learning opportunities in various contexts and differing regions from Years 3−10 and again in Year 12. Whilst not technically an OLP, the Year 12 Retreat always starts the year off with aplomb. Many would think that the students and staff just arrive at the College at the start of the year and off we go. Retreat planning occurs up to two years in advance, and always our intention is to provide a unique experience for our incoming Year 12 students; in 2018, the Retreat program did not disappoint. It is wonderful to see the Class of 2018 at the ‘Back to Retreat’ gathering – so cohesive and all full of vigour tackling challenges collectively, with empathy and support of one another. In 2018 our Junior School programs have been conducted in Albany, Dwellingup, Guilderton, and at Point Walter, with Year 3, our youngest group. The curricular linkages and ‘OLP and ME’ mantra provide a significant strength to student learning. Some of the highlights include our Year 6 students fishing off the beach in Albany, attending the National ANZAC Centre and drawing the Cheynes II whale chaser ship wreck. Our Year 5 students were able to camp out in Dwellingup and participate in a large range of activities, all designed to challenge. The introduction to hand tools and creative design certainly provided our students with a level of engagement not often seen in other contexts. Our Year 4 students were delighted to host St Joseph’s School from Moora in Guilderton this year. Former staff member Mr Jae Dornan is Vice Principal at St Joseph’s, and a collaboration with our Year 4 students was very well received. Our students were able to teach the Moora students to fish, they worked together on an art piece, and created Vlogs in their classrooms as introductions to each other. Our intention is to maintain this wider community engagement into the future. In 2018 Mrs Katrina Goods (Outdoor Learning teacher) has had an increasing presence with the Pre-Primary students through offering ‘Bush School’. This program utilises Nature Pedagogy as its main foundation and draws from many education theories. It is exciting to see this space building at All Saints’, and our youngest students enjoying learning the freedom of open spaces. In the Senior School our students engage with OLP every year, and each program seeks to build student capacity and general capabilities. Early in Term 1, each Year 7 class group attends Manjedal Activity Centre in Karrakup. The aim is to get to know everyone in the class, as Year 7 is an intake year and there are many new faces. The students have a lot of fun on this fast-paced two-day experience, and the results from our survey data always positively reflect the benefit of this program. Every year the infamous Mr John Hunt dons his train conductor hat and takes us back to the wood-felling days when steam locomotives ruled the old mill town of Mornington. Our Year 8 students hear the sounds, listen to the stories of days gone by and search for relics, including the famous 1930 Penny. This year, the Year 8 OLP team increased the amount of time that students spent in tents to two nights. One learning intention was to expose students to expedition skills that will be utilised in 2019 in Year 9. The Year 8 OLP allows the Heads of House to get to know their charges personally before the students move to a vertical Tutor Group, and the OLP has been described as a ‘winning formula’. For the last time our Year 9 students headed to Dwellingup and the Lane Poole Reserve or Wellington Dam National Park to participate in an extensive program which asks our students to build an open mindset and practise perseverance. In 2019 our Year 9 students will head to Kalbarri in Term 3 as part of an exciting evolution of OLP. All Saints’ has been quite active in Dwellingup for many years; I personally recall my first engagement with the College there as a casual staff member in 1996. Our students have been able to participate in canoeing, hiking, mountain biking, rafting and group camping. We are pleased to partner with Outdoor Discoveries who assist with the logistics and provision of such a large program, and we look forward to working with this very professional organisation in the future. At the time of writing, finalisation of the many components required to conduct the eight separate Year 10 OLPs is underway. This is truly a large undertaking, and would not be possible without the support of all members of the College. The students certainly get to experience some of the magical environments of the South West that are not easily accessed by the general public. 2019 is fast approaching, and all OLPs have been booked and preparations are well underway to ensure that our students are provided with the very best opportunity in the outdoors that the allocated time allows. The Outdoor Learning Department looks forward to building momentum in providing an outdoor learning journey from Years 3−10. Many thanks to all staff who participate in programs, enabling them to operate effectively, and of course, thank you to all the students who actively and openly accepted the challenge of OLP in 2018.

Year 7

Outdoor Learning Program

On Tuesday, 18 September 2018 our Year 7 cohort embarked on their four-day Outdoor Learning adventure to Forest Edge Recreational Camp. All Saints’ students have made memories and friendships at Forest Edge for many years, and this time was no exception for our youngest Senior School members catching both sunrays…and fish! The teeth-chattering Pamper Pole, Abseiling, Orienteering and an exhilarating Flying Fox, among other daring activities, gave the Year 7s non-stop opportunities of adventure and team building. This fun-filled way to end Term 3 would not have been possible, if it weren’t for some ‘real-life’ superheroes. In January 2016 a tragic bushfire tore through the countryside south of Perth, devastating the camp’s grounds and destroying many of their facilities. Locals who helped rebuild Forest Edge have had plaques dedicated to them on the climbing wall and dorm room doors. We greatly appreciate their hard work, as our College, with others, is able to continue laughing and learning in nature! Students who have been on this camp in the past will be happy to hear that the Boot Scootin’ Baby song and dance remains a daily ritual! The two-hour hike through mud, dodging branches, clambering over logs and using a mini Flying Fox to get to the overnight tenting destination was also a highlight for this year’s group. New additions include a Corgi and a Ridgeback; maybe they will be able to meet Bond one day!

Year 8

Outdoor Learning Program

On Monday, 21 May 2018 the Year 8s embarked on our Outdoor Learning Program (OLP), and after many hours on the bus we finally arrived at Camp Mornington, originally a saw mill. Everyone was very excited about the week, but we were worried about the weather ahead, as we knew the forecast was for storms and rain. We were curious and concerned as to which House was going to have to battle the stormy weather on their overnight camp! There were many great activities on the OLP, including High Ropes, Low Ropes, Orienteering, Crate Climbing and an interesting History Walk with Mr Hunt. The activities I enjoyed the most were the Crate Climbing and the High Ropes, as they were a bit of a challenge and required a harness. On the High Ropes course, we were lucky enough that Mr Green came along and joined in the challenge. Most students were surprised at how tasty the food was on the OLP, but maybe not so much when we had to cook it ourselves on the overnight camps; some were more experienced at cooking than others.

One tip that I can pass on from our time in Camp Mornington is to remember to bring some warm clothes! I forgot to bring them, and I was sleeping in shorts and a t-shirt on the freezing nights. Thankfully Mrs Goods came to my rescue and lent me some tracksuit pants.

Thank you to all the staff and teachers for making this a memorable OLP experience.

Outdoor Learning Program - Collie

Monday, 9 April 2018 began like any other day for all students at All Saints’ College, except for the Year 9s who were about to embark on our annual Outdoor Learning Program (OLP). Everyone seemed very excited and there were clusters of bags all over the courtyard outside the Centre for Performing Arts. The buses arrived shortly after and soon enough everyone had organised themselves, jumped aboard and settled in for our two-hour trip to Collie. We arrived in Collie to a wet and cold reception. However, the enthusiasm was still high. All students separated into their designated groups and were introduced to their coordinators and staff who gave a brief outline of the week ahead which sounded engaging, frenetic and exciting. All groups were given a set schedule that required them to rotate between a few sites every day, each with its own activities, such as White Water Rafting, Bushwalking, Canoeing and Abseiling. This allowed us to challenge ourselves to step out of our comfort zones and enjoy and experience a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity with each other. These activities were complemented with other life-skill outdoor challenges, such as cooking, cleaning, packing light, waking up early, and participating with a positive and organised mindset. The Year 9 Collie OLP was a thrilling, challenging and unforgettable week-long experience. It provided the opportunity for us to develop our outdoor skills through immersion in a natural environment where we were able to strengthen relationships with fellow students and staff. It was also a great opportunity to challenge ourselves physically and to develop independence, resilience and consideration for others.

Year 9

Outdoor Learning Program - Dwellingup

During the last week of Term 1, the Year 9 students travelled on their Outdoor Learning Programs (OLP) – some to Collie and others to Dwellingup. The Dwellingup OLP group enjoyed many exciting activities throughout the week, including a Mountain Bike ride through the surrounding bushland, a day-long Hike along the Bibbulmun Track, working through a High Ropes course, a Canoeing trip on the river, and an Orienteering Challenge on the last day. We also participated in some enjoyable afternoon activities, such as Charcoal Drawing, Bonding Games, and a team-building exercise where we needed to work together using logs and ropes to cross a stream. Overall, the Year 9 OLP was a valuable experience for everyone involved, and we all came away from the week with lifelong memories.

India Immersion Trip

At the beginning of this year, 15 All Saints’ students embarked on a trip of a lifetime to India. After 24 hours of living in airports and planes, we finally arrived in Kolkata. Here we worked alongside the helpers at the Missionaries of Charity – an organisation established by Saint Teresa of Calcutta. Helping at the Shishu Bhavan and Daya Dan houses, we looked after infants, toddlers and disabled children − playing with them, feeding them, changing their nappies and entertaining them. Progressing to the next leg of the trip, we arrived in Delhi to help at Brother Steve’s Slum School. This school, through the ‘Nine is Mine’ organisation, empowers the children to realise their universal rights while improving their English skills. Working with the Nine is Mine campaign, we wanted to understand the issues and help the children who live in slum areas. In our last week, we interacted with students from the Sambhota Tibetan School in Paonta Sahib, which is a six-hour drive from Delhi. We attended their morning prayers and then classes, where we taught literacy and conversational English skills. And as we did so, the students and teachers shared with us the rich Tibetan culture. Throughout the journey we immersed ourselves in Indian culture; meeting new people, visiting monuments and trying local foods. While much excitement came from these experiences, the most special moments were when we were challenged. Seeing people who live in unimaginable conditions opened our eyes to the struggles they live through daily. And therefore, our greatest difficulty was to leave the children with whom we had formed these strong connections. Special thanks to Rev Russell, Mrs Saunders, Miss Greene, Mr Goor and Madame Chu Yu Chee − without them this trip would not have been possible.

Texas Rotary Group Youth Exchange

On 18 December 2017 Astrid Brittain, Ryan Garvey, Ellie Smith, Jasmin Johnson and I made our way to Perth Airport, eager to travel to Austin, Texas for the Rotary Group Youth Exchange (GYE). After months of planning, service projects and hosting exchanges of our own it was finally time to experience a brand-new culture. After a grueling 18-hour flight and intense border security, we arrived in Austin an hour late (as we had missed our connecting flight). We were greeted by old friends, the Texan exchange students who visited us in Perth the year before, welcoming us to our home for the next four weeks. On our first day we visited the Texas State Capitol Building, which is taller than the US Capitol Building and the White House. Here we learnt about the history of Texas, which was once its own separate country. Then we split up, each going to our respective host families to experience our own adventures. Some of us travelled to nearby cities such as San Antonio, Dallas and Houston. Others were fortunate to go interstate, travelling to Ruidoso, New Mexico to go skiing. During our last week we all attended an American high school, and it was just like the movies. We went to some interesting classes, such as Mechanics, Floral Design and Aero-Engineering where we watched as students built an actual plane. By the end of our trip we had made so many friends, had taken a lot of photos and developed a new perspective on the world. Our send-off at The Austonian was a picturesque experience; surrounded by new friends and our host families, we tearfully said our goodbyes and prepared to make our way from -8 degrees in Austin back to the 30+ degree weather in Perth. If you are keen to immerse yourself in a different culture and gain valuable experiences, I highly recommend applying for the Texas GYE, which is made possible through the College’s partnership with the Rotary Club of Melville.

French Exchange

After a day of flying backwards through numerous time zones (which involved visiting Starbucks in Dubai to keep us awake), 12 Years 10 and 11 students arrived in France, nervous but excited to finally meet our French host families. For the first two weeks of our exchange, while our friends back in Perth were finishing Term 1, we also weren’t exempt from school. Alongside our host sisters and brothers, we sat through classes such as Biology, Philosophy and Spanish History. We enjoyed the luxury of three-hour lunch breaks, where we went off campus to eat at nearby cafés with our friends, but were also faced with the new concept of three hours of Mathematics last thing on a Friday! When we weren’t at school, we spent time travelling around Nice as a group, sightseeing and experiencing more of French culture. Our host families ensured we were able to try as many new things as possible, some taking us to Italy and others serving up plates of snails for dinner! From visiting perfumeries to trying unique flavours of ice cream (lavender and rose to name a few), we made the most of our days before a tearful farewell to our host families and a long train ride to Paris. Every day in Paris was filled with visits to the city’s most iconic destinations. After a few hours of rest in our hotel upon arriving, we made our way through the underground Métro to the Eiffel Tower. The rest of the week brought more adventures, from visiting castles and seeing the Mona Lisa to four hours of shopping on the Champs-Élysées. We spent our last full day in Disneyland Paris, savouring every moment until it was time to say au revoir to France. It was another 19 hours of watching and re-watching plane movies until we arrived home, glad to see our families again but sad to see the end of an incredible three weeks. The French Exchange enabled all of us to truly immerse in a very different way of life – an unforgettable experience which saw us forge strong friendships both with our host siblings and with each other. A special thank you, of course, to Madame Chu Yu Chee and Mr Langford-Smith, without whom the trip wouldn’t have been possible!

New York Arts Tour

New York City (or the ‘Big Apple’, as it is fondly known) was where 22 fortunate Years 10−12 students and three staff (Miss Codalonga, Mr Glencross, and Miss Shaw) travelled in April for the 2018 Arts Tour. Over 14 jam-packed days we watched seven Broadway shows and participated in 17 workshops and private tours, as well as finding the finest local cuisine New York has to offer. The shows we experienced ranged from SpongeBob SquarePants: The Broadway Musical and the Martha Graham Dance Company to the immersive theatre of Sleep No More and the winner of the 2017 Tony Award for Best Musical, Dear Evan Hansen. This experience was specifically designed for students with a passion for Film, Dance and Drama, and we participated in many workshops with industry experts. These included a Screen Acting course with two actors from the TV series House of Cards and GoodFellas, a private photography class at Coney Island and Korea Town, and Dance workshops with the well-known Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and Broadway Dance Center. Everyone gained so much experience and many valuable skills from working with these professionals. Other highlights included visiting Times Square, the Rockefeller Center, NBC Studios and Radio City Music Hall; going on the Staten Island Ferry and seeing the Statue of Liberty; enjoying the singing waiters and waitresses at Ellen’s Stardust Diner; watching an Amateur Night at the Apollo Theater; an amazing bike ride around Central Park; and a Brooklyn Graffiti tour and class. We also visited the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and the 9/11 Memorial Museum during the tour. The 2018 New York Arts Tour was a trip of a lifetime which we will never forget. So many cherished memories were made, and we hope that many more students and staff will get to experience this amazing trip!

Fitzroy Crossing Immersion Expedition

For an enthusiastic group of Years 11 and 12 students, the July school holidays began with a 6.00am trip to Perth Airport, ready to embark on a journey to the Fitzroy Crossing region in Western Australia. The College’s third trip to Fitzroy Crossing was again organised in partnership with Teach Learn Grow, a not-for-profit organisation which provides one-on-one tutoring and mentoring to rural and Indigenous students to contribute to closing the education gap. We spent the week based at two schools, with 16 students at Bayulu Remote Community School and 11 at Muludja Remote Community School. Immediately upon arrival we were welcomed by the communities, with elders and children happily sharing their language, songs and stories with us. While we were there to tutor the students, we also spent time immersing ourselves in their culture; through the NAIDOC week celebrations, playing sport with them and inspiring their passion for learning. A new program this year called Voices saw two Media students, Christian Rudd (Year 12) and Max Baldock (Year 11), gathering significant stories from members from the Bayulu and Fitzroy Valley communities. On a few occasions the All Saints’ groups met up for sightseeing adventures, including swimming at Cable Beach against the backdrop of a magnificent sunset, visiting museums in Broome, touring the Mimbi Caves and boat riding down the Danggu (Geikie) Gorge. Though these excursions were fascinating, the highlight of the trip was definitely the strong connections we made with the students at these schools, as well as with each other. The trip was truly an amazing experience which created memories to last a lifetime. A massive thank you to the staff members Rev Russell, Mrs Watt, Mr Jamieson, Mrs Bentley, Mr Mastan, Ms Cameron, as well as to the Chair of the College Board Mr Stickells, who accompanied us on the trip and made it such an enjoyable week.

Netball Tour

During the Term 1 holidays, a group of 17 Senior School students in Years 9 and 10 travelled over east to the Gold Coast to participate in the International Netball Festival and compete against teams from around Australia, New Zealand and Malaysia. All Saints’ sent two Under 15 teams on the Netball Tour, and both groups had an incredible time and got so much out of the experience. At the opening ceremony on the first night, Ms Jane Rushton, the Coordinator of the Tour, gave an inspirational talk and provided us with some great mindfulness activities. Then All Saints’ performed an act inspired by High School Musical to all the other teams and watched their performances too. Throughout the festival each team played around 12 games, but we still managed to visit Sea World Marine Park, Warner Bros Movie World, Wet ‘n’ Wild and Dreamworld, where we enjoyed some exciting rides and attractions. We also visited Pacific Fair, the Surfers Paradise Beach Markets and Harbour Town, and were grateful to participate in a Netball Clinic with the Queensland Firebirds Netball Team. Over the course of the tour, there was never a dull moment and we all developed close bonds. Everyone was dedicated and supportive of one another, which was acknowledged when one of the teams received the Sportsmanship Award for Under 15s, and Tiana Bussell and Emelia Preston (Year 10) were awarded the Most Valuable Players. Thank you to Mrs Harmsen, Mrs Bol, and Ms Mast for coming along with us on the Netball Tour and making it so much fun. Everyone had an amazing experience, made new friends and learnt so many new skills. We highly recommend it.

Choral Camp

On Friday, 4 May 2018 all the Senior School choirs departed the College for Swanleigh where we would spend the next two days on a Choral Camp. The 2018 Choral Camp is a significant event on the Music calendar and is eagerly anticipated by all the choirs, as it provides an opportunity for intensive rehearsals and team building. The Saints’ Harmony, Combined Boys’ Choirs, and the College Voices all attended this year’s camp. During our time at Swanleigh, each choir enthusiastically rehearsed, learning a range of beautiful songs for Concerts, Eucharists and other musical events. Each member of the choir gave their all during the rehearsals, making every second count. We all had a wonderful time at the Choral Camp getting to know our fellow choir members better, and performed at the end for various special guests, including Mrs Kerkovius and Ms Provis. Everyone was delighted to see Mrs Kerkovius again after she had left the College at the end of the Term 1. She was delighted to see the progress that had been made with all the choirs over the short period of two days. A special thank you to all the College staff who supervised and helped teach Music at the camp, and to the staff of Swanleigh for hosting us at the facility. Choral Camp is a wonderful experience for all students and I highly recommend it. For those who are interested in joining a choir, I encourage you to give it a go as it provides an opportunity to take part in many College events.

Instrumental Camp

The 2018 All Saints’ College Instrumental Camp comprised two days of rehearsals, great food and spending time with like-minded peers. At the beginning of Term 3, the College’s Instrumental Ensembles spent a weekend working on our Music ability and covering a wide range of pieces, from Don’t Get Around Much Anymore to the best Pixar movie songs. We all had a great time immersing ourselves in the music and working together. The camp was very well organised, with our teachers and Music Tutors making sure we weren’t late for rehearsal or meals, and helping us keep track of our instruments. While the majority of our time was spent rehearsing, we were also able to enjoy other activities like playing Basketball outside, playing cards and board games, and eating biscuits with Milo after dinner. We all worked hard to improve our music ability and perfect our skills under the guidance of our amazing Directors and Tutors. I think we all felt the benefit of our hard work and were motivated to keep working hard in preparation for the College Music Concert at the end of the term. To sum up, the Instrumental Camp was a great way to enhance our musical skills and develop stronger friendships in a fun and engaging way.
