KIDS FASHION These two sisters both have their own unique sense of fashion and it shows in the looks pictured above. Paige (pictured left) loves to feel both comfortable and pretty. She is constantly looking for ways to be fashion forward without giving up the comfort. On the other hand, Heather (pictured right) loves getting dressed up and looking beautiful. She is what we call an ‘extreme’ girlie girl.

Both girls have an admirable sense of who they are and express it well through their style.

Does your child love expressing themselves through fashion? We want to feature them! We believe that it is incredibly important to learn who you are and that fashion is one way that children explore this for themselves. If your child would like to be featured in the magazine, please send their first name along with high resolution photos, a short description of how their personality comes through in their look, and where to get the look to stories@momologymagazine.com.

WOODEN PEGS &

Clipped Wings

BY: JOHN LEWIS

M

any writers more distinguished and prolific than I have written about how an elephant is conditioned to be restrained to the ground by a mere chain. As a baby, so the story goes, an elephant is chained to a stake in the ground which it does not yet have the strength to break free from. It struggles and struggles to pull free, to the point of repeatedly cutting its leg on the chain, until finally it just gives up. Defeated, it never again attempts to break free from the peg, even when it has grown strong enough to uproot a tree. It continues to believe that to try to break free will only result in pain and frustration, so it stands there, one powerful leg chained to a wooden stake. While I make no attempt to prove or disprove the truthfulness of this story, I repeat it here simply to make a point. As parents, we have a tremendous opportunity, bigger than anyone else, to influence for good or ill the mindset and outlook our kids have concerning life in general, and their life in particular. Our behavior, words, and investment in their lives have the power to chain them down for life. Like the adult elephant, the pain they experience as children will continue to keep them chained, believing they do not have what it takes to achieve their dreams. Since you are reading this magazine, and this article in particular, I am convinced this is exactly the opposite of what you desire for your children. (Truth be told, I am convinced every mother and every father, deep down, desires only the best for their kids, but that is a topic for another day.) For the next few minutes, I would like to explore together the equal and opposite potential we have as parents to influence our children, our own flesh and blood, to break every chain and pull out every stake that would threaten to kill their dreams. From the moment their little eyes can recognize faces, they are ever fixed on us. Watching. Gazing. Studying our every movement. I remember the first time I felt my oldest daughter’s eyes on me. She was laying in my lap as I studied for a licensing test online when I suddenly felt like I was being watched. I looked down and she was staring right at me, eyes wide and intent. Though perhaps it is not as intense as they grow older, they never really stop watching us. Ever. They learn how to be men and women primarily by observing us.

“A proud man is always looking down on things and people; and, of course, as long as you are looking down, you cannot see something that is above you.” ~C.S. Lewis, Mere Christianity

Though there are many ways we can influence our kids, let’s consider specifically how we can affect their dreams and aspirations. For starters, what do they see when they look at us? Do they see us chasing our personal dreams and aspirations, or do they see us living with a chain around our ankle? We may need to break free from misbeliefs about ourselves and God before we can discover His best in our lives. C.S. Lewis gives us a good starting point and a question to ask ourselves. What (Who) is the ultimate focus of our aspirations? “Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up.” James 4:10

8

|FAITH| Have we submitted our dreams and goals to the Lord? This is the beginning. But even this question is us-centric and not necessarily God-centric. If we reword that question putting God at the center it becomes: Is God our primary dream and goal? Are we pressing on “toward the goal for the prize”, the prize being God Himself? If we are, then our dreams and goals will be drawn up into Him and redefined by Who He is. If not, we are teaching our children, maybe even without being aware, to chase other things before God. Our words are the second source of influence we have on our children, and may be more powerful than we realize. A quick study in the book of Proverbs reveals much of their potential. “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.” Proverbs 18:21 We can use words rashly so they cut our kids’ hearts like a sword, or we can wisely bring them healing. With harshness we can stir up a child’s anger, or we can quell the wrath in their little hearts with a soft answer. Our words can graciously bring sweetness to their souls and health to their bodies. Or, as harbingers of destruction, they can crush their dreams before they even have a chance to grow wings for flight. The way we speak to our precious, beloved children can be a tree of life for them, or it can break their spirit. It is our choice, the fruit we will eat. What do we want? What do you want? We have tremendous power to influence the way they see themselves, the world, and God. Our words will validate what they see in our behavior - one way or another. They will confirm to them that God is our ultimate prize and we aspire to know Him and be like Him, or that we value other things, namely ourselves, more than Him. They will learn by watching us and by the way we speak to them, to either seek Him first or to seek after anything and everything else. They will also begin to learn what they believe about themselves through the interactions they have with us. Through the way we love them. Will they aspire to find God’s best in their lives, or will they remain chained to the ground with their wings clipped? God’s call for parents is nothing short of tremendous. This brings us to our last point of consideration, the nature of our investment in their lives. You may not feel particularly called into ministry per se, but you are a mother and, therefore, you are. Pouring your life into your children, one moment at a time, you are shaping their character, behavior, and outlook. They desperately need us to not just be present in their lives, but invest our time, attention, and interest specifically in them. Help them seek God’s best for them not because it somehow makes you look good, but because God loves you and, being grounded in His love, you love them freely without strings. This discussion is just as much for dads as it is for moms. Your kids need you, both of you. Lead them, serve them, and invest yourselves into them. Enable your beautiful kids to discover God’s best in their lives. Their potential may otherwise remain sadly and tragically chained to a wooden peg. Bet you never thought you could teach elephants to fly!•

LOVE ASaA VERB series on Surviving the Chaos Together

SUPPORTING THE ASPIRATIONS & DREAMS OF OUR LOVED ONES

D

o you remember when you first began to think about what you wanted to be when you grew up? I imagine it is when everyone started asking you. In the past, kids wanted to be astronauts, ballerinas, and teachers. Common responses I have heard from children today are veterinarian, soldier, gymnast, and professional ball player. Because we love our children, when they show a strong interest or talent, we do our best to offer every opportunity to grow them in that area. We sacrifice our time, money, and energy taking them to dance lessons, football practice, and guitar lessons. We will buy how-to-draw books, Legos…anything to develop the skills needed for their dream job or talent. In addition, as parents nurture their children’s dreams, they make sure they get plenty of rest, healthy snacks and anything else needed. We are their biggest cheerleaders. We also tend to be forgiving of crankiness and not having time to get chores done when they are so busy with building and living their dreams. We do this because we love them and want the very best for them. What about our mates? Do you know the aspirations of the one with which you chose to share your life? While some may joke that they have never truly ‘grown up’, I would entertain the idea that we truly do never finish growing. As you transition from stage to stage in life, you begin to realize that life is one big cycle of learning experiences, with generation after generation learning from the ones before us, adding new discoveries and knowledge along the way. And growing is not easy – no matter what stage you are growing through or to, you will experience growing pains. As parents, we try to guide our children and encourage them through each stage of growth to minimize the pain while building their endurance. As adults, do we not need the same? Suppose Dillon needs to pursue a master’s degree in order to advance his career. He has climbed as high as he can with his current level of education and is discontent with the lack of advancement available to him. Dillon dreams of providing his family the additional security and comfort a promotion would offer. Of course, temporarily this will require sacrifices by his family. He will have to spend many hours studying and will be unable to give the quantity of time to his wife or his children that they are accustomed to. He is torn about this, because he knows it will require more work for his wife as she fills in the gaps left by him. Abby can’t help but notice that he is preoccupied with something, so she asks him if all is well. He shares his thoughts with her and she sees the passion in his eyes. Even though she is also busy with her job, managing the house, and the children, she agrees that he should pursue his master’s. During this time, Abby not only takes up the slack with the kids activities, she also encourages him by spending time by his side. She listens as he brainstorms ideas for his thesis and offers her own ideas. She delights in seeing the excitement in his eyes and hears the passion in his voice. Dillon’s dream becomes Abby’s dream as well, and Dillon looks forward to the day that he could reward Abby for her encouragement and sacrifices. He is grateful that she is willing to forgive his lack of attention to the chores, the children and most of all, to her.

10

BY: TERI DARBY In this scenario, Abby knew how to help her husband grow. Noticing that he was tormented, she sought out his thoughts, which validated him. She demonstrated that she cared by spending time with him as he worked so hard; and then allowed her heart to become passionate about his dream as well. As his wife, she filled in for Dillon in their busy family life and sacrificed her time, energy, and attention on his behalf. It was not easy for her, but she endured it so that he could advance in his career to provide better for his family. Most of all, she maintained a forgiving heart, although it was a trying time for her. She validated her husband with thoughtful encouragement and it caused him to want to make life easier for her in the future. Perhaps Dillon can now focus on Abby’s passions and be her biggest cheerleader too! Abby’s thoughtfulness and forgiving nature resulted in personal growth for her husband, a great example for her children, and a better future for the whole family. The best outcome is that her sacrifices also brought growth to her character as well! This is an example, but think about your husband. What are his dreams? Think about how you could love, encourage, and support him as he pursues them and then do it! Often, they just need us to be near them, without even saying a word. You will energize him like you cannot imagine and he will love you all the deeper for it. You will truly be his soul mate. •

oung entrepreneurs are a rare breed – when you ask the average child about their future career, the most common responses are careers of practicality such as a fire fighter, police officer or doctor of some kind. It is easy to see the logic in pursuing positions of integrity and others that will provide a steady and substantial paycheck. On the other spectrum, you have big dreamers who envision themselves as ballerinas, singer/songwriters or bigscreen actors; and sometimes you might hear “I just want to be the best mom that I can be.” It is not very often that they say “I want to start my own business.” But that is exactly what Moziah “Mo” Bridges did – at only 9 years old.

“Feeling Good” $40.00, mosbows.com

Mo has always had a passion for fashion. Known for his sense of style, he could be seen riding his tricycle around wearing a suit and bow tie. “When I was little, I always wanted to look good!” Mo said. “I really loved to wear neckties, but decided I wanted a little pop in my life so I asked my granny to teach me how to sew my own bow ties. Since I live in the South, bow ties are just a part of good old southern charm for a man, or a young man like me.” In 2011, Mo took his love for fashion and bow ties to a whole new level by opening Mo’s Bow’s in Memphis, Tennessee. The store began online and was inspired by Mo’s favorite look, focusing on making men’s and young men’s accessories that are a cut above the rest. Pun intended. “I just think of different colors and different things that I like as far as colors, foods, and smells,” said Mo. “I’m inspired by things that speak to me. Once it catches my eye, BAZAAM, it’s going to be a bow tie!” This inspiration has taken him far in the two short years he has been in business. Now carried in over 10 boutique stores across the south, as well as available in the Mo’s Bows online store, his business has grown to a level not even Mo imagined. His appearance on a popular reality show, featuring businesses that seek investments from some of the wealthiest entrepreneurs in the world, may have caught your eye. But what you may not know is that the show sought out Mo for the appearance, not the other way around!

I’m inspired by things that speak to me. Once it catches my eye, BAZAAM, it’s going to be a bow tie!

The Next Step in Business “[Shark Tank] actually reached out to me and thought I had an awesome business,” said Mo. “They suggested I come on the show to present Mo’s Bows. Life has been great since the appearance. I have had many more sales and met a lot of cool people who want to see my business do well.” His famous appearances didn’t stop there. After meeting with almost every major talk show host from coast to coast, Mo’s Bows is quickly becoming the next household brand with revenue topping $150,000 to date and a total of five employees now working to grow the Mo’s Bows brand. Mo reflects, “One of my biggest role models is Tommy Hilfiger. When he called and emailed me one day, that really inspired me to keep on doing great things for my business and the people who support me.” Great things are what he’s done too. This past summer Mo’s Bows had a Go Mo Summer Camp Bow Tie campaign, in which proceeds from sales of his Go Mo Bow Tie sent 10 kids to summer camp this year. Later this month Mo will be the honorary chairman at the 20th Annual Big Scoop Ice Cream Festival in Memphis benefiting Ronald McDonald House Charities. It has taken a lot of hard work to get to the point in his career as an entrepreneur that he’s achieved in such a short amount of time, but anything is possible when you have the love of your Mom and Granny behind you, encouraging you to strive for any aspiration you may have. “I want to see Mo achieve what he wants and puts his mind to,” says Tramica Bridges, Mo’s Mom. On Shark Tank, Tramica accepted the offer from Daymond to be his mentor, even though Mo introduced himself as CEO of Mo’s Bows. Tramica’s response was not only perfectly witty, but you could imagine Moms jumping up and yelling “That’s right!” and “Go girl!” all over the country. “Mo may be the CEO of Mo’s Bows, but I’m the CEO of Mo,” said Tramica. I think even the Sharks were left speechless. “It’s important for our kids to have dreams and goals, but our job as parents is to guide them and inspire them as they step out into this scary world we live in. Mo’s doing such a wonderful job, and I’ll always be his biggest cheerleader.”

Ladies, Mo’s Bows are for you too!

A Bright Future Mo envisions his business growing into a full fashion line of men’s clothing by the time he graduates high school. Did we mention Mo is now only 11 years old? “I hope to be designing for celebrities,” says Mo. “Things like suits and other male accessories. I hope to inspire other people, no matter what age they are, to do what they love doing and to know it’s never too early or late to follow your passion.” His favorite bow tie he’s designed to date is called “Feeling Good” because it has a lot of fun colors and makes you smile when you see it. It’s been a best seller in his online store. Having been featured in GQ, Business Insider, countless TV Appearances and attending the Mercedes Benz New York Fashion Week just last week, the fame hasn’t changed Mo. When not doing homework or designing the next great Mo’s Bow, Mo enjoys just being a kid. “I like to dance, sing, eat candy and watch the Disney Channel” he said. Since his appearance on Shark Tank and free offer of mentorship from Daymond John, founder and creator of Fubu, Mo has been given a lot of advice for the direction of Mo’s Bows. “Daymond has been awesome to work with,” says Mo. “He told me to always be on top of your business and continue to be a smart businessman.” There are two things Mo would like to accomplish still, that being two hot celebrities he wants to see Rock a Mo’s Bow; Justin Timberlake and Beyoncé, because they represent the style that Mo likes best. You don’t have to be an A-list celebrity, or even a guy to Rock a Mo’s Bow. These bow ties make the hottest hair accessory for gals as well as trendiest neckwear for guys. For more information on Mo’s Bows visit mosbowsmemphis.com and order yours today. You can also find a nearby boutique carrying their own supply of Mo’s Bows. READING FOR SUCCESS BY: TERI DARBY

R

eading is the most fundamental skill your child must learn to be successful in school. Every other subject builds on a person’s ability to read; therefore it is important to take an active role in developing our children’s reading skills. We not only want them to read well, but to enjoy it to the point of continuing to read into adulthood. To find out what we can do as parents, we reached out to former teacher Kim Bellini who has a Master’s Degree in Reading. For the last 6 ½ years she has been the co-owner of Learningrx The Woodlands and has won Franchise of the Year 2014 and the Community Impact Award by the Learningrx headquarters. Kim was happy to explain the benefits of becoming an avid reader, how to encourage children to read, and gave us some tips on choosing reading material for them.

4 MAJOR BENEFITS OF READING #1

Reading works out cognitive functions of the brain such as long term memory, logic and reasoning, visual and audio processing,

and the ability to focus and concentrate.

#2 While increasing our vocabulary we become better spellers, writers, and speakers as words become more familiar and we see

them in proper context.

#3 Our imagination develops as we visualize what we read and get introduced to new ideas. #4 Reading builds our knowledge base to help us better understand the world around us.

HOW TO CHOOSE BOOKS

• Allow children to make choices with our guidance. • It is okay to read comic books and other things they like. It is still reading. • There should be colorful illustrations that correspond to the text. • Make a list of Interesting subjects your child likes and choose books accordingly. • Girls don’t mind reading books with boys as main characters, but boys tend to not like books with girls as main characters. • Kids like to read books about characters that are one to two years older than them. • Books should teach valuable lessons through engaging plots. • For new readers, repetitive phrases throughout the book is beneficial. Choose award winning books like Caldecott or Newbery. • Ask a librarian for help.

Happily Ever After

CHASING YOUR BY: TRACI HUHN

I

f only life were like a fairytale and the princess always got the prince and we all magically lived happily ever after …

18

Ok wait, maybe we have totally misinterpreted the fairytale. At least that is the theory according to Victoria Plunk, aspiring actress and film director. This 17 year old homeschooler and simultaneous college student from Willis, Texas has given this a lot of thought and she firmly believes that most people have it all wrong. Like many young girls growing up, Victoria has been completely swept off her feet by fairytales. She absolutely loves movies and often quotes her favorites. “No matter what mood I’m in, movies always make me happy.” Yes, Victoria often dreams about her happily ever after, but not in a magical, it-only- happens-in-themovies-kind-of-way. Instead, she has discovered the secret key that unlocks the gate to fairytale endings – a combination of aspirations, choices, hard work and determination. This secret was revealed to her through studying some of her favorite fairytale princesses and movie characters. You see, Cinderella may have been helped with a little magical dust from her fairy godmother, but prior to the night of the ball, even in the midst of being ridiculed by her condescending stepfamily, she made a decision to pursue what she wanted and to find a way to get it. You might remember the odds that were stacked against her in the form of a massive load of housework and lack of proper wardrobe, but that did not deter Cinderella – she saw to it that the chores were finished and found a suitable dress to wear. Even after that dress was ripped to pieces by her mean and wicked stepsisters, with a little help from her friends, she sewed a beautiful gown for the ball. Likewise, in the story of “Frozen”, Princess Ana had a dream of being close with her sister again after many years of being ignored. When Queen Elsa turned on Princess Ana, she chose to remember the love that was between them and eventually they were reunited and it is this love that ultimately brought them back together. With this valuable lesson running throughout fairytale after fairytale, Victoria hopes that we can all restore

our faith in the happily ever after. “These princesses all had dreams – it wasn’t until they actually decided to do something about it that they got their happily ever after.” Victoria is currently chasing her own happily ever after. After successfully acting in four plays with CYT (Christian Youth Theater), she was inspired to create and direct a musical of her own. “What I love about acting is that you get to create characters and make people laugh – I love making people happy” she said. When she decided that she wanted to direct a musical, she prayed to God to help her make it happen. His response was loud and clear “You show me you are serious and I will show you that I am serious.” Victoria understood. In the past, she had started many things, but hadn’t followed them through to completion. “When I was twelve I started to write a book, but I never finished it,” she explained. “I’ve had a hard time in the past finishing things.” With a determination to show God she was serious, she invested a lot of time researching what people liked, wrote the script and planned the auditions for the musical. She had done her part and hoped God realized how much she wanted it. With the day of the auditions approaching, literally only two people said that they would audition. Faithful to follow through on what she had promised, Victoria held the auditions anyway. To her surprise, just enough people came to fill her cast. That was the moment when Victoria knew that God was rewarding her for keeping her promise. She took it and ran with it and the rest is history! Victoria would like to inspire other kids to do whatever they want to do. “Many times we see people in movies or on Broadway and tend to forget that these people are just normal people that once had a dream,” she said. “It is my hope to inspire kids to do the right thing just because it’s the right thing and not because someone told them to. It is only then that they will truly be on the path to realizing their dreams and becoming who they want to be.” Victoria would like to thank her mom for all of the loving moral support she has given throughout her life. “My mom was always there no matter what” she said. “She never forced me to do anything but guided me by telling me what would happen or what might happen. This allowed me to make my own choices in pursuing my dreams.” Next time you see your favorite movie or witness a fairytale princess finding her happily ever after, look a little closer and see if you can find the true moral to the story – Victoria has and she is excited to continue to pursue her dreams!

agent. In her first two years with mostly word-of-mouth advertising, Jess has sold over $3 million of property. Last summer she really killed it. Two days after she got out of the hospital from delivering our sixth child, she was showing a house. The clients had just busted out of a contract and had only five days to get under a new contract so that they could still close by the end of the month. With baby in tow, she helped them find a house in two days. That summer she sold six houses and a tract of land and helped her clients buy three other houses. In total, she moved $1.86 million in sales in four months. Jess’ extra income has allowed us to pay down some of our debts. But even though the money is good, and even though the flexible hours allow Jess to make her own schedule, real estate still distracts her from being the mom she really wants to be. In the 21st century, opportunity abounds for fame, fortune and aspirations galore. I know artists, real estate agents, VPs of HR, RNs, CPAs, CNAs, librarians, architects, engineering majors, principals and therapists. Incidentally, all of them are moms. It

seems backwards to some that one might aspire to be a mom - backwards that one would voluntarily choose to change thousands of stinky diapers, wash soiled bedding, be a vomit receptacle for a sick child in the middle of the night, pull loose teeth, clean out ears, pop pimples, de-lice hair, medically glue wounds closed, and even remove dead skin from the 2nd degree blisters on your toddler’s hands after he fell in a smoldering fire pit. Not to mention functioning through most of this on a limited amount of sleep. But chores are the daily grind and not the tender moments that inspire women to become mothers in the first place: when the unique life inside your womb moves for the first time; when the doctor places that same beautiful blue creature over your heart seconds after birth; when a newborn grasps your finger, yawns and drifts into sleep; when a child puts her hand on your face and looks into your soul; when another child you grounded for eternity comes out of her room a half hour later to say “I love you. rough day; when a troubled teenager hugs you tight for staying up late to talk; when another troubled teen hears your prayers and comes safely back home. Such are the moments mothers live for. Aspirations are personal choices and we should not fault anyone for the paths they take in life, but we achieve our greatest successes when we balance our dreams with the dreams God has for us. Instead of panting after our dreams like aimless dogs, God can breathe precious life and direction into us and inspire us to press forward. Life is best when aspirations and inspirations are one and the same. On her last day of teaching in Alaska, Jess and one of the student teachers struck up a conversation. The student teacher had just been hired on and was looking forward to the beginning of her career the coming fall semester. It perplexed her that Jess was quitting after only 3 years of teaching. “You’re just going to quit?” she asked, “What are you going to do?” “I’m going to be a mom.” Jess replied. “That’s all?” “That’s all I ever wanted to be.”

Auto Care from the Heart BY: JOHN LEWIS

Laura Barnett & Dennis Mendoza Owner/Operators

friendly face greets you as you step in out of the elements onto a noticeably clean floor. Off to the side, you see leather couches and a wide screen T.V. mounted on the back wall. Having been burned elsewhere before, you are a little nervous about the outcome of your appointment as you walk in. They did come highly recommended, though, and the welcoming environment begins to ease the tension in your face and shoulders. “How can I help you, ma’am?” asks the friendly face from behind the counter. You step up and begin to explain the problem you have been having with your car the past few weeks. As he asks you questions for a preliminary diagnosis, you begin to feel more and more relaxed. Finally handing him your keys, you take a seat over on one of the leather couches to wait. You cannot get over how clean this place is. This is your first visit to C.A.R.S.

The friendliest faces in the auto repair industry!

Brandon Lewis, Manager at the NEW Woodlands Location

Founded in September of 2009 by Dennis Mendoza and Laura Barnett, the first C.A.R.S. location opened on F.M. 2920 near Kuykendahl in Spring, TX. Neither having experience owning or running their own business, they learned the ropes as they went. Dennis reflects, “Through trial and error and a lot of hardships, we were able to figure things out.” They may not have been knowledgeable new business owners, but they knew where their priorities were. Dennis begins, “We had a goal in mind, it was customer service. Take care of our people, take care of our customers…” “And it will work,” finishes Laura, “if you do it right, you take care of your customers, it will work.” Dennis previously worked for ten years in customer service for furniture stores while playing professional slow pitch softball at the highest level. One day a friend invited him to come work for his auto repair shop as a customer service rep, a liaison between the customer and the technicians. He did so well he was promoted to general manager of their Conroe location within three days, despite having limited automotive knowledge. After nearly three years, Dennis grew tired of the bottom-line mentality of “sell, sell, sell.” He was working 70 to 80 hours a week and decided he would be better off running his own shop his own way. He quit one day, signed the contract for their F.M. 2920 location the next day, and opened up shop six weeks later with no financial backing. They opened a second location off Hwy 105 near downtown Conroe in September of 2011, and just opened their third location in September of 2014 on the I-45 feeder north of Rayford/Sawdust. Dennis reflects on their growth, “In our industry, a lot of people have been taken advantage of…we’re trying to break that mold by doing what we say we’re going to do. We can make a good, comfortable and honest living by doing only what needs to be done and developing a relationship with the customer. They’ll come back.”

|LOVE|

3 LOCATIONS TO SERVE YOU! Laura, a world geography teacher at the 9th grade campus of Oak Ridge High School, also has a heart to help teachers. “I’m a teacher, and that’s one place we try to help out - to take care of teachers because…we know.” Dennis adds, “We know they don’t have time or the big bucks, so we give back 15% to any teacher from any school district.” C.A.R.S. also offers all their customers a 2 year, 24,000 mile nationwide warranty. That’s twice the warranty offered by the dealerships. Dennis explains, “We’re trying to prolong the life of your vehicle. We want you to get the most miles for every dollar you spend.” Dennis laments the industry’s reputation for taking advantage of people and works hard to change the game. “We would rather gain the trust of our customers so they will always come back to us, and they’ll spread the word for us. Our best advertising is word of mouth by taking care of our customers.” If a customer is unable to afford the work that needs to be done, C.A.R.S. will break it down and give an order of priority for them. No high pressure here. C.A.R.S. recently offered free oil changes for donations to benefit a young girl who was recently diagnosed with kidney and heart cancer. With the opening of their new location, they are currently running a Free Oil Changes for Life Campaign. Customers who bring their cars in during the month of September will get their name put in a drawing for a lifetime of free oil changes. Customers receive 1 entry per $100 spent at any C.A.R.S. location. The drawing will be held October 1st. If you are looking for quality auto repair with a heart, visit one of their three locations: off F.M. 2920 near Kuykendahl, off Hwy 105 near downtown Conroe, and on the I-45 feeder road north of Rayford/Sawdust. Did you know? Women who have not had children or who were pregnant later in life (over 35 years of age) may have a greater chance of developing breast cancer. Combined post-menopausal hormone therapy increases the risk of developing breast cancer, and also increases the likelihood that the cancer will be found at a more advanced stage. The use of alcohol is linked to an increased risk of developing breast cancer and increases with the amount of alcohol consumed. Obesity: After menopause, fat tissue may contribute to increases in estrogen levels, and high estrogen levels may increase the risk of breast cancer. Oral contraceptive use within the past 10 years may slightly increase the risk of developing breast cancer. The risk decreases over time once the pills are stopped. Radiation therapy done to the chest area as treatment for another cancer has significantly increased risk for breast cancer.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness M o nt h Over 190,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer annually, which is 1 in 8. About 85% of breast cancers occur in women who have no family history. These occur due to genetic mutations that happen as a result of the aging process. Family history, particularly mother, sister or daughter with breast cancer may double the risk. Besides skin cancer, breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in American women. On average, women over 60 are more likely to be diagnosed with breast cancer. Men get breast cancer too, but at a much lower rate than women.

The Good News Is... There are 2.8 million breast cancer survivors in the US! A healthy diet & exercise routine can reduce your chance for breast cancer by nearly 40%!

Breast-feeding may help lower your breast cancer risks!

Loving, supporting, and encouraging

TODAY’S TEENAGERS

The Momology Team intervied two high school teachers on today’s teenagers - the issues they are facing most today and how we can encourage them through it. We hope this feedback will provide some insight that will be helpful to moms of teens and welcome your feedback as well. Send comments/questions to stories@momologymagazine.com. Q. What are some of the biggest issues teens face today? HS ENGLISH TEACHER: Teens are bombarded with social media they don’t have a chance to really connect with people personally. It’s ironic, because we assume we are so “in touch” but it’s a facade! I’m reminded of a short story by Ray Bradbury called “The Pedestrian”; a man gets arrested because he’s out walking (he’s not inside his home watching TV or connected to a video game) ... too much media! HS BIOLOGY/PHYSICS TEACHER: Peer pressure. It is still the same as when we were kids, but the dangers are greater. We were pressured to smoke cigarettes or drink, but kids today are being pressured to try very dangerous and life-threatening things. Kids are pushing the limits and it’s a direct result of being exposed to things on the Internet. We never would have thought to choke each other to the point of passing out because we never knew about it. But our kids are seeing these things and are just curious by nature. Parents need to keep an open, honest line of communication with their kids and allow them to ask questions.

groups, etc. all have benefits to a growing teen. But one of the greatest benefits is keeping them focused and keeping them out of trouble. Coaches and directors have behavior expectations and require respect and good conduct. They are there to push your child to be the best version of him/herself. They will be invaluable influences in your child’s life, both in and out of school. A kid not involved in anything has too much time to get in trouble and nobody other than a parent to care. The more adults that care about the success of a child, the more successful that child can be. To what extent do you feel that parents should monitor teens cell phone usage and social media profiles? HS ENGLISH TEACHER: Parents today have to monitor and talk with their teens about what is happening in their lives - social media complicates it because there is so much technology for teens to dabble and get lost in! I know from my experience in the classroom, some students think the cell phone is attached to their bodies - it’s like an important organ. They focus on the latest Facebook post or text message instead of the classroom lesson!!! Social media has created so many conflicts for teens-I automatically think of cyber-bullying and the suicides because of this social invention!

Q. How do you think parents/teachers/youth pastors/youth centers/etc. can better partner together to give teens what they need to deal with these issues? HS BIOLOGY TEACHER: Without being embarrassing or a stalker, HS ENGLISH TEACHER: I think schools, churches, and most parents parents should monitor every detail of their kids’ cell phone usage. do a good job of helping teens connect with one another. Apps like Snapchat make it difficult, because pictures are immediately removed from the phone after being sent. We don’t allow HS BIOLOGY/PHYSICS TEACHER: Often, when I have called home apps like this. The kids know we monitor their electronics but we about issues with students, the parents are very receptive and don’t talk about it regularly. Quiet monitoring in the background helpful in maintaining the expectations from school to home. But without being totally obvious about it is best practice. When somealso often, there are parents who think their kids are perfect and thing needs to be said, you know it, and this is when they need to can do no wrong. It is very destructive to our children to view them be aware of what you have seen. this way. As adults in their lives we have the responsibility to help them to become the people they want to be. If we let them think Q. What is your advice on communicating with teens in a way that there is no room for improvement, they will never grow and never they will respect and understand? In your opinion, what is the best reach their potential. Praise them when they do good things and way to get a teen to open up and talk? when they make good choices. But every event in life can be a HS ENGLISH TEACHER: Talking with teens and getting them to open learning opportunity. Take every opportunity you can to help them up and talk is the million dollar question! I have no formula - In the grow and learn to think critically about the situation they face. classroom, I cared about students and they knew it! Teens talk to people who sincerely care about them whether it be a teacher, Q. How important is it for teens to have hobbies and be pastor, coach. Once again I go back to question number 1. Who encouraged to develop their talents? really cares about me? To whom am I connected? HS ENGLISH TEACHER: Teens must have an interest, hobby, club, connection in order to succeed---in my 30 years of teaching, I HS BIOLOGY TEACHER: Honesty and humility. If you are honest with found that the students who were involved in band, choir, art club, them and don’t try to manipulate them to give you answers, they sports etc. were the best students! They had higher self-esteem, will talk to you. Being humble about mistakes you have made and more confidence, and more success in all aspects of their lives! letting them know you aren’t perfect can go a long way in making them comfortable opening up. Don’t always feel like you have to HS BIOLOGY TEACHER: Extracurricular activities are invaluable for be a flawless, perfect adult role-model. It may actually have the teens. ONPOINT O

Dr. Derrick Raymer, D.C.

with Dr. Raymer

ne of the things I love about what I do every day is having the opportunity to work with kids of all ages. It makes each day new and different because each young athlete is unique and has their own set of strengths and weaknesses. I may treat an ankle that was sprained at basketball practice for one, while another might need corrective exercises and strength training to prevent an injury from happening. One day I may need to coach an athlete to have confidence in their shoulder while throwing a baseball post-rehabilitation. Another day I may need to explain the importance of performing a particular exercise correctly. Each appointment I have with an athlete or any patient is an opportunity to make an impact in their life. As a doctor and coach, I strive to improve their behavior, habits, and movement every chance I get. During the time I have spent working with and treating youth athletes, I have noticed that there are specific things that seem to pop up again and again. Some are positive, some negative; certain things are important to address immediately, while others are not that big a deal. However, once a particular behavior becomes habitual, it develops into a mentality that can be hard to shake. This can limit progress and impede what we are trying to accomplish.

A COMMON THEME AMONG ATHLETES The following is a very common scenario in my office: Me - “Did you do your exercises at home?” Athlete - “I was going to but I had too much homework to do.” “We are what we repeatedly do. Me - “What did you do once your homework was finished?” Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit. Athlete - “I watched TV.” Me - “Why didn’t you do your exercises while watching TV?” -Aristotle Athlete - “I didn’t have time after my show was done before bed.” Me - “What did you just make? Athlete - “An excuse”. There we have it! When it comes to exercise, athletic training, and many other things in life, the reason we do not do it is rarely more than an excuse. We have all done this before, and I am at fault myself. Think about how many excuses we make every day. The majority of the time we likely do not realize we are making an excuse, but it’s a common habit for most of us. The funny thing about making excuses is that it makes us feel like we are off the hook. Even if we acknowledge we have made an excuse, we remain unwilling to break the habit of making excuses. This becomes one of the biggest roadblocks to progress for a young athlete. To modify behavior, it is imperative to first acknowledge the excuse was made. Admitting that an excuse was the limiting factor from performing a task is a huge step in the right direction of changing the habit.

KICKING THE HABIT THROUGH PERSONAL GROWTH & DEVELOPMENT The process of changing a habit takes time and dedication. It is a life skill that has value beyond exercise, injury recovery, or strength improvement. It affects all aspects of life and every day decisions. I take this as an opportunity for a teaching moment - a chance to flip the mindset of a young athlete to understand the importance of accountability. It is a great moment to enable an athlete to own his or her mistakes, take responsibility, and to grow as an individual. While accountability and responsibility for actions will certainly improve an athlete’s game, my goal is to develop positive habits that impact everyday life. Dr. Derrick Raymer, D.C. is the Director of Sports Performance at Athletic Republic-The Woodlands. He specializes in Injury Prevention Assessments, sports performance training, and treatment of injuries in young athletes. Common conditions treated are shin splints, plantar fasciitis, as well as shoulder, neck, and low back pain.

Call to schedule an appointment with Dr. Raymer and mention Momology magazine for a 50% off Initial Exam. Ask about the new Mighty Moms classes, where you and a few of your friends can experience the same exercises and tactics used for youth development. Classes are small, so space is limited!
