The Company
Almarin was established in 2004 in Barcelona with the objective of developing aids to navigation in Spain. Backed by its Portuguese partners, Almarin made inroads into the Spanish market through innovation and excellence in customer service. Simultaneously, the distribution of boatyard, port and harbour equipment was successfully developed. Almarin designs and manufactures buoys and beacons and has a close collaboration with the leading manufacturers of lights and other equipment with which its buoys and beacons are equipped. To strengthen its position, in 2007 Almarin acquired Balizamar, founded in 1981, and in 2008 Almarin became an industrial member of IALA. Based in Barcelona and competitively manufacturing high quality products in Europe, the success of its navigation buoys encouraged the continual development and investment in the aids to navigation business area. This success led to the internationalization of its activity which began in 2012, initially focusing efforts in the Latin American markets. Today Almarin is a specialist manufacturer of aids to navigation with an increasingly global scope.

Grupo Lindley
The Grupo Lindley of companies began its activities in 1930 with the establishment of Ahlers Lindley, Lda. as a distributor of port and industrial equipment in Portugal. Today the group comprises of four companies, three of which continue to focus on the original business activity: Ahlers Lindley is a manufacturer of harbour and marina equipment; Almovi distributes and services cargo handling equipment in the industrial and harbour markets; Almarin is a manufacturer and distributor of aids to navigation. Ahlers Lindley and Almarin pool engineering and production capabilities sharing expertise in the design and manufacture of fixed and floating structures for the marine environment. Almovi is a market leader in industrial and port handling equipment with highly trained technicians that maintain equipment in the most demanding conditions. Each company employs qualified staff capable of providing service to customers wherever it may be required. The Grupo Lindley companies are proud to be considered a benchmark by customers who have acquired its products and services.

ROTOMOULDED HULL
BALIZAMAR Balizamar buoys are designed and manufactured in accordance with IALA recommendations; this range is suited to most marine beaconing needs. Years of experience combined with the best engineering and a careful selection of materials provide a range of high performance buoys at an affordable price. All Balizamar buoys are characterised for having a unique galvanized steel structure that passes through the hull transmitting the loads through a large circular plate onto the hull. No joints or screws to hold the plastic components together. Balizamar buoy hulls are made of rotomoulded polyethylene and filled with expanded polystyrene foam, which ensures flotation in case of a breached skin. Its steel structure supports the mooring and tower evenly distributing loads on the upper surface of the hull.

FOAM ELASTOMER HULL
SPECIFICATIONS AND CHARACTERISTICS*
GUIA
The GUIA range is the top, most robust range of buoys manufactured by Almarin. They are designed to be used in marine navigation where natural conditions are demanding, there are high volumes of marine traffic or for situations that require using the most rugged product available. The hull of the GUIA buoys is manufactured using closed cell polyethylene foam core, which makes them virtually unsinkable. The core is covered by a polyurethane elastomer skin, which makes the assembly flexible and resistant to impacts they may receive from marine traffic. The load bearing structure, usually a tail, transmits the loads from the mooring to the hull and is manufactured from hot dipped galvanized steel.

SPECIAL BUOYS
A800
The A800 model is an economical and single body buoy manufactured from rotomoulded polyethylene and available in several shapes and colours. This product is the most commonly used for the beaconing of beaches but can also be used for the provisional beaconing of marine works, dredging, small channels and temporary installations. The buoys can be purchased empty or full of polyurethane foam, which ensures the buoy will remain afloat even when the hull has been breached. In very shallow waters, the buoy can be equipped with ballast to ensure its stability. The A800 was designed as a blind buoy but as an option small lanterns and/or top marks (only in the case of the cylindrical buoy) may be installed when used in very calm waters.

SPECIAL BUOYS
SPAR
Spar buoys are recommended for use where there are breaking seas. Manufactured in the shape of a torpedo and with reduced reserve buoyancy, the buoy will submerge and sink under breaking conditions, offering a low resistance and a minimum pull on the mooring. The buoys are manufactured in glass reinforced polyester and their internal chamber is partially filled with closed cell polyethylene foam to prevent it from sinking in case of a breached hull. Almarin manufactures two models: 3m and 6m. The selected model will depend on the depth of the location where they are to be installed. In both cases a minimum depth is required (which will depend on the swell) to ensure the buoy does not touch the bottom. The installation of this type of buoy will require a detailed study of the depths where it is going to operate, since its reserve buoyancy is limited and the design of the mooring is critical for correct operation.

SPECIAL BUOYS
ARTICULATED Articulated navigation buoys have a reduced swing radius. These buoys are recommended for applications that require a highly accurate beacon placement and are typically found in narrow channels or inside the port itself, usually marking the limits of turning basins. These buoys are frequently used for marking the bases of quaysides or moles where there is an abrupt change in depth. Each buoy is comprised of a tube that extends from a universal joint attached to the sinker to the lamp located at the top. A hull that is located a few metres below the surface applies a constant upward force, which maintains the assembly in a vertical position. This type of buoy requires a detailed study of the location and will not perform correctly in applications with strong currents or where the variation in water level is high (due to the tide or wave height). The standard operating depth is between 12 and 60m. The ALBA 2 buoy shown in the picture below is located at the north entrance to the Port of Barcelona.

The quality control of manufactured products is a priority at Almarin. The company strictly monitors the quality of its workmanship and raw materials used. Traceability is of the utmost importance so as to be able to assess performance throughout the life span of the product. Almarin is ISO 9001:2008 and ISO 14001:2004 certified, which shows its commitment to quality and the environment. Regular internal meetings monitor and standardize activities and promote a constant improvement of the company’s products.
Almarin benefits from the Lindley Group’s know-how acquired over 85 years of experience manufacturing products for the marine and port environment. The added value is reflected in the design and control of solutions for their customers.
Almarin has been a member of the International Association of Lighthouse Accessories (IALA) since 2008. IALA provides guidelines and recomendations for the design of aids to navigation; Almarin incorporates the majority of the association’s recommendations into the design of its products.
Almarin is continuously analysing materials, ensuring that the most suitable materials are used for each application. Prior to adopting new designs or incorporating new materials, the solutions are tested using a variety of alternative methods: physical tests conducted at our installations or in the marine environment and materials testing in external laboratories.
The standard, batch produced products are periodically reviewed for updating of designs and procedures.
All the new designs are created using three-dimensional tools and a subsequent structural analysis. The use of state of the art tools and the dedication of qualified personnel in the Lindley Group are the foundation for high quality products manufactured by Almarin.
