Family skate Community – On the first day of cold weather after an unseasonably warm Christmas, families headed to the Beckwith Recreation Complex Dec. 30 to enjoy an hour of free skating courtesy of the annual Tim Hortons Free Skate. After taking a few turns around the ice, sisters Kristen and Bethany Hogan take a break to chat with mom, Jennifer Hogan, and dad, Kevin Hogan.

Celfest could end after 18-year run News – After 18 years as a tradition in Mississippi Mills, Almonte Celtfest could be ending. According to the Town of Mississippi Mills, there is a large and enthusiastic group of volunteers on the organizing committee, but no one has stepped up as festival chair or artistic committee chair. “We do have leadership and

volunteers for vendors, promotions and publicity, volunteers, site, finances, fundraising, administration and employee supervision,” stated an email from the town, dated Jan. 6. “…With no person at the head to lead our festival and no one prepared to choose and contract the acts, we cannot continue.”

A webmaster is also needed to manage the Celtfest website. The organizing committee will meet Monday, Jan. 12 at Almonte Old Town Hall to close the festival. Those interested in taking over a key role should contact almonteceltfest@hotmail. com or call 613-256-3576 before Jan. 12.

News – It’s a girl! Little Addison Phinney, who was the first baby born at the Almonte General Hospital in the new year, is the fourth addition to a family of girls. Parents Ashley Miller and Chad Phinney already had three daughters – Ciera, 6, Dakota, 4, and Kallie, 3, when Addison was born, leaving dad the sole male in the house. “Except the dog,” joked Miller, “that’s why the dog is a boy. So he’s not so isolated.” Addison was born at 2:07 p.m. on Jan. 1, which is fairly late in the day for a new year’s baby, but actually early for Miller, who wasn’t expecting the baby until Jan. 22. “We never thought she would be a new year’s baby,” Miller said. “It’s kind of fun, though, knowing she was the first one born in 2015.” In the first few hours of her life, Miller says Addison seemed to be adjusting well to her new surroundings. “She’s the easiest baby ever,” she said, laughing. “She hardly ever cries, but we’ll have to see if that sticks after we get her home.” Since Miller and Phinney live in Renfrew, Addison’s three older sisters had yet to meet their new sibling when the Canadian Gazette visited, but Miller says they were excited to have another friend to play with. Four daughters, though, is all Phinney said he could handle.
