Our greatest wish for the 2020/2021 winter season - that the hotels and ski lifts would be able to open for guests and winter sports enthusiasts - was unfortunately not to be. The pandemic still had South Tyrol firmly in its grip, and last winter the majority of the sector had to live with restrictions. Holiday tourism, as in our neighbouring countries, was all but impossible, and the South Tyroleans themselves had to forego their winter sports. Furthermore, we had an incredible amount of snow, a winter landscape of one’s dreams, and the usual beautiful weather. But as the saying goes, all is not lost, and next winter will come around again soon enough.

We are now approaching summer 2021 with cautious optimism. After the long (and cold) corona winter of travel restrictions, people are looking forward to freedom, a lot of sun and warmth, beautiful mountain landscapes, healthy countryside activities and precious times with family and friends. Our guests cannot wait to embark on leisurely hikes and enjoy pleasant evening meals outdoors. Going on holiday is not something we take for granted at the moment, so when a good opportunity presents itself, people in search of a relaxing break will enjoy it all the more. The Dolomites Region Seiser Alm is easy and, above all, safe to get to from both the north and the south. Many of our regular guests - so they tell us - are very much looking forward to coming back here once again and recharge their batteries in our beautiful mountains. We have a lot to offer to young people, sporty holidaymakers and families who are looking for relaxation “around the corner” rather than far-flung lands. With this edition of ALPE, we are setting the mood for the 2021 summer season, a holiday in our beautiful Dolomites Region and will be telling you once again stories of interesting people and places. The small mountain village community of Tiers is, on a par with the Schlern region, home to the widest variety of plant life in South Tyrol. 68% of the land belonging to the town is now part of the Schlern-Rosengarten Nature Park, created in 2003 as an expansion to the Schlern Nature Park (founded in 1974). Some areas of the 7,300-hectare park - the oldest in South Tyrol - are listed as Natura 2000 sites and, as such, come under EU protection. Since 2009 the Dolomites, including the Schlern and Rosengarten Dolomites, have been a UNESCO World Heritage site in recognition of their unique landscape and geological features.

Hiking and beholding the beauty of nature in an area like this is an absolute blessing. The beautiful wild plants are perfectly happy to be admired, but both locals and guests must be aware of the fact that picking them is an outright taboo. I vividly remember my parents drumming that into us children during our walks, a recollection that only heightened my outrage when I bumped into a group of young hikers coming back down from the North Tyrol slope with a young boy of around six, running along picking gentians – and his parents not saying anything about it. I couldn’t stop myself from speaking up, but in the absence of any reac- »

tion on the parents’ part, my sufferance continued as I watched him heading down to the valley, both hands spilling over with gentians, and dropping them along the way. The Schlern-Rosengarten Nature Park is a botanic treasure trove of mind-boggling biodiversity. This immense range is a result of the variety of altitudes and cardinal orientations, and the climatic and geographical differences in the area. Observant hikers or flower lovers will notice, in some areas, how much the flowers change within the space of a few metres. This is, amongst other factors, due to the

properties of the soil: On the Seiser Alm, for example, there are no edelweiss as the soil is mainly volcanic. However, when you get to the “Tourist Trail” leading to the top of the Schlern, with its basic dolomite rock, all of a sudden you come across a veritable proliferation of this emblem of the Alps, also a common sight in the Tschamin Valley.

notoriety. One man who can lay claim to knowing practically all Alpine plants, not to mention having rediscovered a few which were thought to be extinct, is Georg Aichner. He has always loved nature, and realised while hiking that he only knew the names of very few flowers and ferns. He put his mind to finding out more about plants, and to learning their names by heart. “It was no easy task, and it took me a lot of effort to recognise differences which are often miniscule, but the ‘Flora von Südtirol’ (Flora of South Tyrol), group helped me a lot” the plant-enthusiast tells us. “When I go hiking today, it’s no longer the peak that I’m aiming for,

but the impressions and experiences of my nature observations.” One of Georg’s faithful companions is, of course, his camera. He has a particular passion for orchids, he says. In the Tiers Valley alone there are over 40 species of wild orchid: The highest number in all of Trentino and South Tyrol, followed in sizeable quantity only by special biotopes in the Etsch Valley such as those of Castelfeder or Lake Garda. which is generally found only in more southerly climes. When asked where these rarities grow, the amateur botanist answers with a smile: it’s a secret.

One endemic regional species is the Dolomite rock jasmine (Androsace hausmanni). This plant is wellsuited to extreme mountain condition, and grows exclusively in the crevices of the Dolomite rock. It was first discovered in 1851 on the Schlern. Around 40 flower and fern species in the Tiers Valley are considered to be endemic, which is to say restricted to a fairly small area. These endemic plants include the Moretti bellflower (Campanula morettiana), one of the botanic rarities in the Nature Park. It grows in one of the gullies in the Tschamin Valley and at the foot of the Santner peak, and is named, like many species, for one of the many international botanists who had already begun to study Alpine flora in the Dolomite area in the 19th century. The very first information on the flora of Tiers dates back to 1791, but was confined to the low-lying areas; Benedikt Eschenlohr from Germany provided the first information on flora at higher altitudes in 1821 with a botanical expedition report from the Tierser Alpl. One famed South Tyrolean who studied the flora of the Schlern in the 19th century was Franz Tappeiner, a doctor and botanist from Laas.

The list of species is particularly extensive in Tiers, as the climate and geographical location converge with a variety of soil conditions. The diversity ranges from sub-Mediterranean species such as the smoketree (Cotinus coggygria) and the flowering ash (Fraxinus ornus) through to species which are only found in Alpine altitudes above 2,500 metres a.s.l., such as the Facchini saxifrage (Saxifraga facchini) in the scree land of the Rosengarten. “There is even one plant in South Tyrol which has only ever been seen in Tiers: The Venetian lady’s mantle (Alchemilla niphogeton) grows only on the Tierser Alpl and does not appear again until the neighbouring Fassa Valley,” says Georg Aichner. »

It is interesting to note that many species considered to be Alpine flora arrived in this area from farflung climes as a result of climate change. The edelweiss, for example, comes from the mountains of Central Asia such as the Karakoram or the Himalayas. Climate fluctuations over the millennia have led to the distribution of plant species across the planet. Similarly, the poisonous monkshood, columbine, Alpine rose and gentian are also native to Far East Asia, while the crocus and the various blue-

bells originated in the Mediterranean basin and the mountains of North Africa. Arnica, greatly valued for its healing properties, made its way from North America through the continent of Asia to the Alps. Emma likes simplicity With her dirndl and braids, Emma Kompatscher has conquered her world: the retired farmer’s wife from Völs is proof that a simple life is the key to happiness.

E Emma Kompatscher is hurrying through the town; she’s just come from Mass and needs to nip into the local shop to get a few necessities. She always walks the arduous road from the church square up to “Zimmerlehen”, and when somebody offers her a lift she tends to wave them off gratefully; she’s always walked this road, and that’s the way she likes it. The dainty 78-year-old mother of eight children, not to mention grandmother to many and now also great-grandmother looks back on a happy life. In these times when so many people are yearning for a simpler lifestyle, she is an example to follow: of clarity, of self-awareness, and of gratitude.

The eldest of eight, Emma was born in the war years, in 1942, at the Moarhof in Völs am Schlern. “We were self-sufficient. We had horses, cows, oxen, calves, pigs and chickens. Potatoes and wheat grew in our fields, 8 acres at the time, in Obervöls.

Together with maids, farmhands and travelling folk, up to 20 people lived on our big farm. We had the basic necessities, and we worked and prayed hard.” As the eldest, Emma always had to set an example; it is this, she says, which shaped her character.

Born and raised in Völs, Emma described her childhood at length in a long interview for the renowned Zeit Magazin in summer 2019. “My first dolls were fused potatoes: They looked like people, and I dressed them up in knotted handkerchiefs.” Nothing could be more rudimentary, but the toys served their purpose. Emma was a well-behaved, obedient child who enjoyed going to school. Her dream of becoming a teacher was never to be: She was too homesick for Völs, and the city of Meran, where she attended middle school, wasn’t her cup of tea. And then there was Seppl, who showed her the edelweiss in the mountain fields and set her heart a-flutter »

when she was just fifteen. Seppl was 20 and Emma 17 when he proposed to her. Initially, uncertainty regarding degree of kinship posed a slight obstacle, but all doubts were later eradicated. Marrying any other man was out of the question, she says. In 1966, the wedding bells rang and the shy Emma became the Zimmerlehen farmer’s wife. The vast farm, formerly an ecclesiastical fief, towers high above Völs and has been in the hands of the Kompatscher family for an almost unbroken 100 years.

In the past, lunch generally consisted of Knödel bread dumplings with salad and dinner of Muas buckwheat spoonbread, but for a long time now they have had a freezer to store the meat, a treat for Sundays and special occasions. Emma keeps hens, which provide fresh eggs every day; she doesn’t need a cat, she says, as she has the hens for company.

It was here that Emma brought up her eight children, the first of whom was born in 1968. There was always a great deal of work to do on the farm, in the house and in the barns and luckily, Emma’s mother-in-law worked untiringly alongside her. For the young farmer’s wife, the extensive renovation and restoration work on the farmhouse tower and the farmhouse, which included the conversion of the attic to the children’s bedrooms, was equally hard work, but a source of immense satisfaction. At a certain point in time guests began to arrive, whom Emma welcomed with great hospitality. All this work left the young woman with no time for any frippery, and certainly not for a holiday.

Emma bakes her own bread, which brings back the smells of her childhood and is much better than the shop-bought variety. There are still two cows on her Alpine farm, and they supply the milk. Not long ago, Emma made the butter and cheese herself; she learned the skill from her sister-in-law Veronika, took a course to extend her knowledge and now passed the task on to her daughter-in-law.

Emma has no driving licence, nor can she cycle, ski or swim but she doesn’t complain. “I’ve never wanted for anything,” she says.

The relentless rhythm of farm life came to a halt each summer when Emma packed their goods and chattels and they all headed off to the Seiser Alm in June. Together with the kids and a couple of cows, the farmer’s wife spent two months in the seclusion of the mountain pasture, where she made butter and Alpine cheese, and was delighted when Seppl came to visit them on the weekends. Josef “Seppl” Kompatscher, the Zimmerlehen farmer, was a hard-working man: A member of the brass band all his life, he was also actively involved in countless rural institutions and associations. As Mayor of Völs am Schlern, he was an ambassador for this town at the foot of the Schlern for 25 years and was widely known and greatly appreciated throughout the local area. Emma didn’t see much of him, but when he was there, everything was good.

While butter and fresh cheese should be eaten straight away (or frozen for the winter), soft cheese has to mature for three weeks and hard cheese for six weeks. “We don’t make grey cheese,” Emma says, “as the family doesn’t like the smell.” “When making cheese, half of the milk is poured into a centrifuge and the cream is skimmed off,” she explains. “The cream is then whipped to butter, and the skimmed milk made into cheese. Hygiene is the most important part,” She googled how to make mozzarella, but hasn’t quite got the knack of it yet. By selling milk and yoghurt, she managed to supplement the tight household budget. “But we didn’t need much up on the mountain farm,” she says, recalling the times she spent there with her children.

Farmers’ Association, Emma has had her first experience of Association life. “These twelve years have been quite a challenge,” she says, looking back, “because I prefer to be behind the scenes, to be honest.” Emma always wears a dirndl or traditional clothes, she only wears trousers for hiking. “To me, the dirndl means home,” she says. Today, there are only two or three elderly people in the village who still wear the dirndl on normal, non-festival days. Emma has worn her hair in braids since she was a child, as a crown braid in her youth and later, after her marriage, in a plaited bun. But to think that time stood still along with her braids would be mistaken; Emma is interested in world affairs and local politics, and finds out a lot about them through media technology with the help of her children and grandchildren, whom she loves to visit. She writes emails, reads digital mass media, and is perturbed by the “hate speech” on the internet; “These anger-driven, hate-filled comments should be blocked,” she proposes.

farm. “Some of them have gone on to become famous,” she says with a touch of pride. “the former skier Peter Fill, the luge champion Patrick Pigneter and the singer Alexander Rier.” It’s not just her eight children who have turned out well in later life, but these young lads too. When summer draws to a close Emma is always happy to return to the valley and enjoy the pensioner’s life in peace and quiet. That said, she’s never short of something to do. Emma has a deep sense of tradition and is always delighted to pass her knowledge of farming life on to the younger generations. Sometimes she gives interviews on the history of the village, although speaking in public is a huge effort for her. As President of the Senior Citizens’ section of the Völs

The lady from Völs loves harmony and has a strong sense of solidarity. Rather than giving her children and grandchildren big gifts “when it’s always hard to find the right thing”, she donates the money to the needy. And the family is perfectly happy with the arrangement. In 1999, Emma and Seppl passed the farm on to their eldest son Isidor, and in 2005 Seppl gave up his mayoral position. Unfortunately, fate didn’t leave them much time together; at the age of 68, Sepp passed away all too young after a short illness. On a glorious winter’s day in January 2007, a funeral cortège carried Sepp on his last journey from his beloved Zimmerlehen to the village. Emma spends her solitary evenings in the tower of the Zimmerlehen farm, the beautiful home of her old age, but “my bond with my husband remains,” says the deeply religious woman. She often speaks with her Seppl, and kisses his photograph every evening before she goes to bed. And she knows: “Seppl is looking down on me and our children.” «

The pros of the forest The Kastelruth Forestry Station is responsible for the development of habitats on the Seiser Alm and surrounding area. ALPE took a trip to visit Michael Eppacher, forester and manager of the station.

16,000 hectares of woodland: A vast area of jurisdiction for the Forestry Station in Kastelruth, although it comprises just two municipalities Kastelruth and Völs am Schlern. The Station also manages the protected areas of the Seiser Alm and the Schlern-Rosengarten, which falls under both municipalities. The Kastelruth Forestry station is an administrative branch of the Forestry Commission of the Autonomous Province of Bolzano. To give a brief outline of their remit, they work together with local municipalities and private landowners to monitor the conditions of the woodland and countryside at the gates to the Dolomites, taking interventive action as and when required.

Sustainable management. But what exactly does this Provincial corps and its eight staff members do? “Authorisation of tree-felling is one of our responsibilities,” says Eppacher. Most of the woodland is owned by the local councils – around 5,000 hectares belong to Kastelruth, and roughly 1,000 hectares to Völs am Schlern. Like private landowners, local councils have to request authorisation before felling trees; public interest plays a greater part in the decision-making process than purely economic factors. “The ecological relationship between flora and fauna are our main focus of attention” the station manager emphasises. The woodland plays an enormous role in mountain conservation: it shelters settlements and protects them from landslides and avalanches, acts as a nat- »

The duties of a forester are many and varied, and range from countryside observation to dealing with traffic violations in the nature reserve.

ural water reservoir, provides a habitat for countless species of animal, combats natural erosion and is well-worthy of respect as a historical and cultural heritage site.

The Vaia Storm. It is clear, that woodland must be protected and managed. When the Vaia storm raged across South Tyrol in 2018, it razed nearly 5,000 hectares of woodland to the ground in the Jender Valley, a remote valley between the Seiser Alm and Val Gherdeina. Rainfall saturated the steep lands to such an extent that the tall trees toppled to the ground, roots and all. The road below the forestland was now exposed to a constant risk of landslide, and technical interventions were carried out to shield it. “An enormous amount of woodland was hit by the storm, and was no longer capable of performing a protective function,” Eppacher explains. The municipality of Kastelruth installed wooden tripods on the roadside embankments to protect them from snow and landslides in the immediate future, while in the longer term the forestland will once again take on its protective role. The subsequent reforesting is based on a new concept which will see a departure from monoculture planting – and the economically profitable spruce - towards the planting of mixed woodland, capable of regenerating naturally, and leaving the undergrowth to take its own course. The ultimate outcome could vary greatly from altitude to altitude. “The Vaia storm has taught us that,” says Eppacher. The decision to opt for mixed woodland was also influenced by climate change and its ensuing results, slightly higher temperatures, longer periods of drought and extreme weather conditions. The light-demanding larch will be the main tree planted, followed by spruce, which grow well in their shade: This blend should restore the protective function of the forestland.

Natural mixed woodland. One exemplar of natural mixed woodland in the area can be found in the Hauenstein Forest at the foot of the Schlern massif, named for the ruins of Hauenstein castle, erstwhile seat of Knight and minstrel Oswald von Wolkenstein. One of the noteworthy features of this forest is its natural combination of larch (light-demanding

species), spruce (partially shade-tolerant species) and fir (sub-montane shade tolerant species). “A perfect team,” says Eppacher enthusiastically. A further outcome of the freak “Vaia” storm was the building of new forest roads. In less than two years the worst of the damage has been repaired, in part due to the pressing need to limit the spread of bark beetles. New forest roads had to be built to transport the immense amount of fallen timber which, although they compromise the beauty of the forests, will nevertheless be useful for their future management and may be converted into cycle paths, Eppacher muses.

Fauna and Flora. Eppacher places extremely great importance on the forest’s role as a habitat for a variety of animals. In autumn 2019 an unusually high snow pressure together with strong winds damaged a number of trees between the Völser Weiher and Seis am Schlern. Although much of the damage has since been repaired, many trees are still damaged or lying on the ground. “From an ecological perspective, it’s ideal,” says Eppacher: The rotting

Forest management is based on a ten-year forest-management plan. Three full-time forestry workers together with a number of seasonal workers are occupied year-round in the management of every aspect of the forestland, from caring for young saplings to felling trees. Each year, the municipality extract 25,000 m3 of timber from the forest, of which 5,000 m3 are earmarked for option-holders. “The municipality could potentially extract more wood, but the prices on the open market are at rock bottom at the moment, so there’s no profit in it,” the forest manager reveals. If felling trees ceases to be profitable, the forestland would acquire an inestimable value as a Source Protection Area. There are a number of “banned zones” in the forests, where no grazing rights apply and no technical interventions are permitted. And ultimately, the provision of clean drinking water to the valley villages is dependent entirely on the pure springs that gush forth from the thick forest land at the foot of the mountains.

ministration of civil rights of use” as ownership of this land has for many years gone hand in hand with a series of obligations towards the local population. Hereditary grazing rights are exercised on the Seiser Alm, as are options to purchase rights for local residents, both for firewood and construction wood. Treaties dating back to the 14th century and the Reign of Empress Maria Theresa also stipulate clear regulations as to the use of economic proceeds resulting from the sale of round timber: All income must be reinvested into the woodland. How clever our forebears were!

Historic woodland. Once upon a time the Seiser Alm, Europe’s largest mountain plateau, was covered in forest land. Only a few traces of this original forest remain today, and preserving and protecting them is one of the Kastelruth Forestry Station’s main objectives. An abiding hallmark of traditional Alpine mountain landscape nestled in the vast meadows, these natural larch forests are managed and cared for with the greatest of dedication, exactly as the old chestnut groves in the valley areas of Völs and Kastelruth, and Eppacher calls for greater commitment - both public and private - to ensure their preservation. In the Middle Ages the chestnut groves were a source of nutrition for the people, he says, and today they are an important concern for land management. Profitability, nature conservation, a place to relax, a source of drinking water, landscape management, preservers of biodiversity, protectors of the climate and a beacon of hope in the climate crisis: This is what a healthy forest provides, and that is why its ecological and economic health and equilibrium are entrusted to such highly-trained, hard-working professionals. «

“Respect the mountain” The “Respect the Mountain” project aims to promote awareness of the importance of environmentally-friendly behaviour in the UNESCO World Heritage Dolomites amongst guests and locals, and to encourage mindfulness, respect and responsible behaviour in the mountains and in everyday life. The main themes covered by the project focus on potable water and waste prevention.

4 tips for a clean environment: • Think of it like this: “Whatever I take to the mountains, I will bring back home and dispose of it appropriately.” • Stay on the signposted trails and bike routes. Prevent waste, and do not leave any rubbish behind. • Don’t bring anything that is unnecessary. You will find everything you need in the mountain huts and alpine-pasture inns. • Steer clear of plastic bottles and enjoy our fresh tap water.

A number of places are equipped with dog toilets where you will find plastic bags to dispose of your dog’s waste. It is compulsory to carry dog waste bags with you, and to pick up after your dog immediately. These bags must be disposed of in a rubbish bin; do not leave them in the countryside. Please remove your dog’s feces, particularly from fields and meadows. Farmers use these fields to produce food. If cattle eat dog feces, they will suffer a miscarriage.

Mountain rescue The beauty of our mountains is matched in equal measure by the unknown dangers that lurk within them. The Alpine Club South Tyrol’s (AVS) Alpine Rescue Service (BRD) was founded in 1946, and now counts over 1,000 highly-qualified members: women and men, on call around the clock to rescue people from emergency situations in the mountains or the open lands.

A Armin Nicolussi was just a young lad with a fervent passion for rock-climbing when he first joined the mountain rescue team. He completed several years of training on rock, snow and glaciers before becoming a fully-fledged member of the mountain rescue team. After years of training and professional development abroad, Armin Nicolussi has now returned to his home village, and works as a freelance engineer. Last year, the General Assembly of the Seis am Schlern Section of the Alpine Rescue Service elected him as head.

Helmut Kostner lives in Kastelruth, and he turned his passion into his profession. He is a trained mountain guide and the Alps are his office, but he remains committed to the mountain rescue service with body and soul. Dietmar Fulterer is an electrician by trade and has been an expert mountain rescuer since his youth. Nowadays he volunteers as a helicopter rescuer for “Aiut Alpin,” an Alpine helicopter mountain rescue organisation. »

Around the Schlern and on the Seiser Alm, the mountain rescuers are called out to emergencies in summer and winter alike.

Volunteers. All three of them are volunteers, as are the other 34 members of the Seis Mountain Rescue Section. “Everybody is of equal value here, there’s no hierarchy,” says Armin. As head of the local section, he works primarily on administrative problems with his committee, represents the concerns of Seis in the Regional Association, and views his responsibilities as coordination rather than leadership. It is young locals who - with no remuneration give up a lot of their free time to complete an extremely demanding, far-reaching training which encompasses specialised courses and rock, glacier and avalanche training. If aspiring members pass these courses, they must then attend compulsory training seminars held by the Regional Association and countless practical training sessions in the rocks and the snow, even in the very worst of weather conditions. In addition, annual practical training sessions are held together with other

civil protection associations, in order to guarantee a swift, coordinated response in case of disaster. What motivates them to do this?

Community. “Ultimately we are, like everybody who seeks adventure in the mountains, individualists. Being a mountain rescuer means taking responsibility and being willing to put your skills and expertise at the service of others,” says Helmut, the mountain guide. For candidates (the applicants), the appeal of mountain rescuing is the further training they receive in addition to the skills they already possess, and then gain entry to a team which is distinguished not only by its high degree of professionalism, but also of companionship and mutual readiness to help. “Every practice session, every meeting and every mission is a group event. The human dimension plays an extremely important role,” says Helmut as he talks about the value of voluntary work.

Responsibility. “During a rescue mission, it is fundamental to be able to place our absolute trust in one another, which is why we train regularly and hone our team communication skills, as they must be flawless, particularly in the mountains in difficult conditions,” explains Dietmar who, as helicopter rescuer, winchman and emergency-response doctor, has reached the outer limits of the possible on many occasions. In addition, it is this shared hobby and the Alpine experience, that forges such a close bond between the members, he says. Group climbing expeditions in the Dolomites, in the Western Alps, in the rocky lands of the Mediterranean or the recent five-thousander expedition in Georgia, are all experiences that strengthen this bond. 110 missions in summer and 650 in winter, according to the records of the Seis am Schlern section (before the corona crisis!). In summer, in addition

to search missions, these figures generally comprised rescue missions in high mountain areas. The area of service covers the municipalities of Völs and Kastelruth. Hikers who injured themselves, climber who fell from the rope, injuries resulting from vehicular accidents, and also animals - missing sheep and calves - are rescued from inaccessible spots and brought down to the valley. The high number of rescues in winter, on the other hand, are due to slope rescue services, which the mountain rescuers undertake in shifts in the ski resorts of the Seiser Alm, recovering injured skiers from the slopes and transporting them safely to other emergency services. “Unfortunately, we are also called out on needless missions,” says Armin. It has happened that mountain rescuers arrived on the scene and the injured insisted on finishing their cappuccino at the mountain hut Helmut tells us. “We are not a mountain »

hut service,” he says, exaggerating a little for effect as he calls for people to appreciate the immense effort on the part of the rescuers from the moment an emergency call arrives, and all of the potential consequences.

The rescue chain. One must also understand, says Armin, the complexity of a rescue mission. The emergency call (112) is routed to the regional emergency call centre in Bolzano, where the emergency is analysed through a set series of questions, after which the appropriate rescue station is alerted. The mountain rescuers, who are split into small on-call groups, ascertain the mission details, localisation, gravity of the incident and means required (off-road vehicle, helicopter or other) together with the regional emergency call centre and the mission leader by means of a pager. They stay on the line with the 112 team, and meet at the mountain rescue headquarters in Seis, where the mission begins. “From that moment on, we are responsible for the smooth running of the rescue chain, from the emergency call through to the rescue and transportation of the casualty to other civil protection organisations,” says Armin. Guaranteeing a rescue mission which is planned down to the smallest detail, and minimising the time required, calls for optimum equipment. Keeping it updated, purchasing new equipment and carrying out maintenance with latest-generation technological skills are just some of the tasks of the 35 local mountain rescue stations in South Tyrol. The mountain rescue station in Seis, for example, is equipped with a radio transmitter system which allows the rescue team to organise largescale operations in the event of catastrophe, even in the case of a blackout or other disruptions.

The future. Equipped with the latest in technology, all-rounders and/or mountain specialists, the mountain rescue service in South Tyrol steps towards a cross-generational future: The older generations remain members of the association and make themselves useful in the equipment house or on search missions, and the younger generations take the reins.

Five applicants are currently in training. “It’s good to know that young people will be bringing values of responsibility and volunteering into the future,” says Armin. Even now, other Alpine countries depend to some extent on paid rescue workers. And women? “In South Tyrol, there are 52 female mountain rescuers. We do not have any current applicants. One of our concerns at the moment is to inspire women to become involved in mountain rescue associations, to train them and welcome them into our community on an equal footing,” affirms Armin, head of the local station. «

When the men and women of Kastelruth are out for a wander, they often meet up on the path leading to the Schererplatzl, a small clearing above Kastelruth. Leading out from the village along the Marinzenweg trail, past the beautiful shrine beside the Wegmacher farm, the route

leads along trail no. 6 through vast meadows towards St. Valentin. And it’s a bustling with activity from early morning through to late afternoon: People young and old meet up while strolling, jogging or walking the dog. Any time is a good time for a quick chat, or a “Ratscher” in the local vernacular. With the Covid pandemic and all the restrictions

over the past months, it’s these little encounters – naturally, distanced at least 2 metres – that have been a balm for the soul.

Between Kastelruth and Seis. Midway between Kastelruth and Seis, the Schererplatzl is an incredibly convenient set-off point for a pleasant walk and a brief respite from the frenzy of life to recharge your batteries and breathe in the fresh air. Another one of life’s pleasures is to just sit under the old cherry tree and enjoy a spot of “Schlern gazing.” There are endless ways to explore the surroundings, and your choice rests solely on

how much time you have and how fit you are. From here, a steep ascent will take you up to the Marinzen pasture and onwards to the Puflatsch and the Seiser Alm, to the Wasserebene football pitch and training ground if you head north, and Seis to the south. In June, the modern-day knights of the Oswald von Wolkenstein riding tournament gallop up this trail, while in January it is the stage setting of a rural “Farmer’s Wedding” event, with guests arriving by sledge. The school road and the meadows. The older generation have a wealth of stories to tell about the school road, which passed by the Schererplatzl clearing; there was no such thing as school buses in those days. On Sundays, many people crossed the meadows above Kastelruth to get to church. Up here on high, the cattle were driven to the Seiser Alm in spring, where they grazed until autumn. After all the hard toil on the farm, there wasn’t much time left for wandering around, so no doubt the Schererplatzl has always been a popular spot for people to meet up. «

Waiting for the right moment: Fabian Dalpiaz at the Völser Weiher lake

The photo hunter Fabian Dalpiaz spends his nights roaming the woods and mountain pastures in search of the perfect shot. To the young man from Kastelruth, photography is like an addiction.

“Hey, I’m Fabian,” is the introduction on the young man’s website. “I’m 18 years old, and a photographer from Kastelruth.” Skinny, blonde-haired and blue-eyed, Fabian is a man of few words and seems shy on first impression. But when he steps out onto the stage to talk passionately about his hobby, he makes the room his own as he inspires his audience.

A student at the Gutenberg Vocational High School for Multimedia Design - he’s set to graduate in summer 2021 - Fabian got off to an early start in making a name for himself. His springboard came at the age of just 14, when his photo “Milky Way above Alpe di Siusi” took the third place in the international “2017 Astronomy Photographer of the Year” award.

The following year, Fabian was awarded the title of “Young Astronomy Photographer of the Year” with his photograph “Great Autumn Morning.” “It was 5 o’clock in the morning, before school. I wanted to get a photo with the moon, Mars and Venus in the dawn light. But when I was taking the test photo a shooting star flew into focus, and that’s how this incredible photo came about,” explains Fabian, relating the origins of the success. On permanent exhibit in London, the photo has also been displayed at special exhibitions in Liverpool and Florida.

Fabian Dalpiaz leaves nothing to chance. “Every photo begins with an idea,” he says, and then he progresses to the real plan. What’s the best time? How do I get there? Will the weather and vegetation be suitable? After he’s answered these ques- »

tions, the young photographer heads up to his chosen spot during the day, as it is extremely difficult to find the best vantage point at night. For many of his photos, the young student gets up in the middle of the night and pedals off to his planned photo shoot on his e-bike. “Then I set up my camera and wait,” he says. “I wait for the moment as I imagined it.” When he clicks the shutter release button and knows that his lengthy planning and effort paid off, it’s a good feeling.

In addition to landscape photography, the Kastelruther also makes short films and time-lapse recordings. “I find night photography particularly fascinating, as you’re capturing something that is barely visible to the human eye,” he explains. Through long exposure times, he turns night into day. When he first started out, Fabian was a little afraid of the dark; now, he adores being on his own in the blackness. “I’m always cold though,” he admits. “The only way to solve that problem is to wrap up warmly and not think about it.” Fabian knows the brightest and most important stars. “It’s like hunting,” he says. “You sit in the dark and wait. And then, if you’re lucky, the thing you’re hoping for will appear in front of your lens and your patience will have paid off.” Photography is addictive. “Cycling or roaming the countryside in search of new places and subjects is my great passion,” he reveals. “I’m very happy that I live in this beautiful place and can find beautiful new subjects at all times of the day and night.” Fabian first embarked on photography as a hobby at the age of 12, when he would place his camera behind the window to create time-lapse videos of the clouds passing over the town or the cars driving by. Later, the young lad began to film lightning with a small camera. “I posted my short videos on YouTube, but nobody watched them,” Fabian grins. Since then, his hobby has developed into a profession, which he talks about at conferences throughout South Tyrol and Austria. At these events, Fabian exhibits first and foremost the spectacular night shots which have brought him to fame. “Photography is an art: Everybody does it differently,” says Fabian. “That’s the wonderful thing about it.” «

There’s a world of difference between watching a string quartet in a traditional concert hall, in the production hall of a coffee roastery or a farm tavern: “Schlern Music” brings chamber music to unusual venues.

“… simply music” Sonia Simmenauer draws on the energy of the surroundings to find her artistic concept.

The “Schlern Music - Kammermusik unterm Schlern” (Schlern Music – Chamber Music below the Schlern) festival led the town of Völs down trails untrodden in 2019, when the traditional Chamber Music Academy took to the stage in revisited format. First and foremost amongst the changes was the choice of venues; the triumphal success of the event amongst locals and guests was, however, due in virtual entirety to the outstanding artistic vision of legendary agent of the classical scene Sonia Simmenauer, her staff and their knack verging on the uncanny in choosing artists. The event will be held once again in 2021/22, when guest musicians will include Spanish clarinettist Pablo Barragán, familiar to audiences from the 2019 festival. ALPE joined Pablo and Sonia Simmenauer for a chat about their experiences and their plans for “Schlern Music”.

who live in Frankfurt, have been coming to Völs am Schlern on holiday at least once a year for the past decade and their tradition has now been passed down to my grandchildren. They always rave about the time they spend in South Tyrol, so I knew instantly that I wanted to do it. Sonia Simmenauer, you’re French by birth and a long-term Berliner by choice – what prompted you to choose Völs as a venue to develop a chamber music concept? Sonia Simmenauer: Life is filled with incredible coincidences. Peter Paul Kainrath, Councillor for Culture in South Tyrol, whom I knew from the Sound Forum in Vienna and his work in Bolzano, advised the Völs Organisational Committee to ask me if I would consider developing a concept for a small chamber music festival. The name wasn’t new to me, as my daughter-in-law’s family,

Did you find it hard, given the many potential venues in and around Völs, to choose the right places for the event? Sonia Simmenauer: Yes, absolutely, because there are just so many places that are so very different. Every spot has its own distinctive character, and you could quite easily fill each one of them with melodies that would suit them perfectly. From the very outset, there were only “right” places and so, given the limited number of concerts, we had to make a choice. We made our very best efforts to capture a variety of atmospheres.

Pablo, your Instagram profile leaves no room for doubt: You’re on the road a lot. 2019 was your first time in South Tyrol. Were there any impressions that have stayed in your mind? Pablo Barragán: It’s thanks to music and to wonderful ventures like “Schlern Music” that I have the privilege to travel so much, and that is also a significant part of what being a musician means to me, Music tells stories which, in turn, are mainly about people. When you travel, you discover a lot of different ways of looking at and interacting with the world, and these new perspectives always enrich you as a person. Two memories of my first trip to Völs are firmly imprinted in my memory... One time when we had a soundcheck at the Völser Weiher lake right beneath the Schlern, and it was breath-taking. The other time was when we were checking out potential venues and we met Heiner, Clara, their family and their incredible vision at the Stanglerhof farm.

concert hall with comfortable armchairs. In venues like the ones in Völs, this art loses its “sophisticated” identity and becomes, simply, “music”. Pablo Barragán: I wouldn’t say that the venue changes the content of the music either. But it certainly has an impact on your perception of the venue and on how you understand and express the music. It is a great challenge to feel these influences and have the flexibility one needs to merge with the atmosphere. Musicians, particularly chamber music musicians, have a great sensitivity for the audience and the moment. We pick up on a lot, and can react, respond and interact in a variety of ways, either ignoring the energy or becoming a part of it. But then, of course, we leave the music to do the speaking. It’s a really good question, as it leads on to the central issue of the moment and how tragic it is that, over the past few months, we musicians have not been able to

play for a physically-present public. Does this accessible approach attract a different kind of audience, or do the same people come but just have more fun? Sonia Simmenauer: You bring music to people who would otherwise be wary of coming to listen to the music in a “sophisticated” venue. People who are familiar with classical music and have no fear of it, on the other hand, experience a different kind of enjoyment in these novel settings. So both! The informal venues are also popular with families. Does it make a difference when there are a lot of children at a concert? Pablo Barragán: It makes a big difference to me, and a positive one. Their pure, natural energy, their curiosity and spontaneity, their way of listening... it’s

What is the special appeal of relocating a “pure art form” such as chamber music to an unusual venue? Do the surroundings merely inject a breath of fresh air into the “sophisticated music,” or does the venue change the content itself? Sonia Simmenauer: That’s a difficult question. No, it’s not the content that changes, but the people who are listening to it. You listen differently if you’re in a proper theatre, outdoors in the open air with the birds chirping around you, in an unheated chapel, squashed together on hard pews, or in a well-heated

unique, and wonderful. When they are listening, they are absolutely honest, and show you exactly what they like, what they don’t, and how the music or any other art form affects them. I experienced this very intensely at “Schlern Music 2019” when the Goldmund Quartet were playing the “Hunting Quartet” by contemporary composer Jörg Widmann at the Peterbühl; the children were in their element. Curiosity is essential if you want to connect with any art form. Knowledge allows us to relate to art on a different level, but it’s the curiosity to explore and understand that keeps music alive. Sometimes I wish that we musicians could hear music with children’s ears, right from when we start rehearsing. How do you choose the “Schlern Music” musicians who create, as one newspaper put it, “an interlacing of vibration” above Völs? Sonia Simmenauer: First and foremost, we ask the musicians if they can imagine playing in a “borderline,” unpredictable concert situation; this is fundamental. The choice then automatically goes to younger musician who can, and want to, spend a whole week in one place, artists who are interested in other musicians, down to earth, and people who embrace life.

As a musician, Pablo, how do you feel about playing to a smaller public? Are concerts with smaller audiences somehow less important?

Talking of the pandemic, what plans do you have for the upcoming festival in June 2021? Is it possible to find a Covid-compatible solution?

Pablo Barragán: Personally I always give my best, independently of how many people are sitting in the audience. For us musicians, a more intimate concert with fewer people can be a very interesting experience that gives us a different perspective on our music. The energy is certainly different: When you’re playing for a large public a special energy is unleashed, but I’m flexible and always give 100% regardless. That said, it is truly tragic how the current crisis has forced us to play - when we can - to an exceptionally small public, and that this has become normality. With these restrictive conditions, it is harder for musicians to enjoy playing. Many years ago, I played at the “Davos Festival” at the mountain station of a very remote location, which we arrived at on foot, to a tiny audience. It was a particularly wonderful experience, a liberating making of music; more people arrived over the course of the morning. But that was long before the pandemic.

Sonia Simmenauer: We’re going ahead with our planning in any case, as that is the most important thing to do if we don’t want to sink into stagnation in the present. We have once again brought together an array of young artists who are delighted to meet each other and to bring joy to the public. As always, when I have any say in the line-up, the string quartet is the nucleus, the core, the heart. We want to blend a variety of instruments and styles again, to offer both the surprising and the familiar, and to make an experience of the music. Will “Schlern Music” ever organise a concert on the Schlern in “Sound of the Dolomites” style, or would it be too much to ask of the musicians?

EDITOR’S NOTE At the time of the interview, no final decision had been made as to whether the “Schlern Music” could be held in May. Unfortunately, it has since been confirmed that this multi-day festival with two string quartets and guest musicians, including Pablo Barragán, will not take place until May 2022. The magic of chamber music at the foot of the Schlern, however, is still going strong, and on 25 and 26 June 2021, two stars of next year’s festival will be giving us a preview of next year’s event at the mini chamber music festival: Simply Quartet from Vienna, recently crowned ECHO Rising Stars of the 2021/22 season and Italian accordion virtuoso Samuele Telari. Sonia Simmenauer: I think it would be particularly hard to plan, as so much depends on the weather at that altitude: Too hot, too humid, cold, wet and so on. But why not? Maybe a spontaneous session with musicians and audience who have a head for heights! Pablo, what do you think? Pablo Barragán: I’d be there in a heartbeat: Is that an official request? I’ll definitely do it, but I get to choose the programme. Is that a deal?

200 g quark or ricotta 100 g cream cheese 1 tbsp. olive oil Fresh seasonal herbs Salt and pepper

Combine the quark, cream cheese and olive oil. Chop the herbs finely and add to the cheese. Season with salt and pepper. This spread will keep for at least two days in the fridge.

GARDEN HERBS Herb quark is a fresh, healthy spread. Garden herbs grow lush and fast in the summer, and if you know your herbs well you can also pick them wild in the countryside. This way, the herb curd can be prepared as desired and delights with new flavour variations again and again throughout the season. The quark pairs particularly well with soft rye flatbread and Vinschger bread rolls or with potatoes, meat and grilled vegetables.

Two very unusual open-air gourmet events make for an incredible culinary experience in the Seiser Alm summer: The debut event is Berglertafel in Tiers am Rosengarten on 15 July; in addition to culinary finesse, it is also famed for its breathtaking views of the legendary Rosengarten. On 28 July, Kastelruth welcomes guests to a culinary event steeped in history on a Calvary hill; the stage setting for the Krausentafel banquet is the Kofel in Kastelruth.

The Völser “Kuchlkastl” Kitchen pantry event has been a culinary high point of autumn in the Dolomites Region Seiser Alm for 44 years and counting. Foodies and lovers of down-home cuisine can feast to their hearts’ content from 1 to 31 October, when the restaurateurs of Völs warmly welcome guests to enjoy a “Gastronomical October.” The chefs of Völs will be cooking up traditional recipes with a sophisticated twist: Time honoured recipes reinterpreted, and served with love. www.voelserkuchlkastl.com

Prösels Castle is also open to visitors in winter. Winter castle tours are combined with fairytale winter walks, offering visitors a variety-packed alternative to skiing. Every Thursday from 13 January 2022 to 31 March 2022, Prösels Castle will be awakening from its winter slumber and open its doors at 3 pm. During a one-hour tour, visitors will learn a wealth of fascinating information about the castle and its former residents and, at the same time, can visit three art exhibitions and a vast weaponry collection. On three days this winter (Thursday 30.12.2021, Wednesday 05.01.2022 and Thursday 03.03.2022), the “Winter Cuisine & Culture” event will be held for the first time at Prösels Castle: After the castle tour, guests will have the opportunity to sample traditional local products free of charge in the castle grounds, where local producers will be hosting an array of stands. The Winter Kids’ Festival will get the 2021/2022 season off to a rip-roaring start on the Seiser Alm. The day is guaranteed to be fun: Loads of games, good music and surprises will bring a sparkle to the children’s eyes. And while they’re enjoying themselves, they can also learn to ski and improve their skills.

A sporting event illuminated by the glow of flickering torchlight, the chance to put your skills to the test at international level, and the magical winter backdrop of Europe’s largest mountain plateau: In 2022, the Moonlight Classic will once again be offering numerous athletes and cross-country fans the chance to spend a sensational evening on the Seiser Alm by night. Participants can opt to take part in either the 30 km or the 15 km variant of the loop route. Both variants begin and end in Compatsch and are raced exclusively in classic diagonal style. The starting pistol for this cross-country spectacle will be fired at 8pm. At the start/finish area, spectators will already have gathered en-masse to enjoy the atmospheric display when the alphorn players and whip crackers take to the floor to set the scene for the evening. www.moonlightclassic.info

THE KASTELRUTH FARMER’S WEDDING Over the years, it has grown to become an established tradition: The Kastelruth Farmer’s Wedding. It is an authentic reproduction of an old fashioned farmer’s wedding as celebrated since time immemorial here at the foot of the Seiser Alm. The high point of the event is the wedding parade from St. Valentin to Kastelruth. The wedding party, dressed in traditional attire, drive to the centre of Kastelruth in a magnificently decorated horsedrawn sleigh, bringing their guests along with them on a trip back in time to the 19th century.

This culinary gourmet hike leads from Tiers to the Wuhnleger lake via St. Sebastian chapel. Participants can make their way there individually, departing from Tiers am Rosengarten no later than 10 am. Along the route, 4 catering stands will be serving aperitifs, warming soups and many more mouthwatering delicacies. At the final station on the Proa (Alpine meadow above St. Zyprian, hay bales and tree trunks provide the seating facilities around the fire. NOSTALGIA FUN RACE Travel back to bygone days at the Nostalgic Jamboree Race - numerous nostalgia groups from South Tyrol, Trentino, Livigno and Slovenia have been invited to the Seiser Alm to do just that! Spectators can admire the period clothing from a variety of eras on the Panorama slope and meet the nostalgia skiers during the lunch break in the surrounding huts. A prize-giving ceremony rounds off the event, organised in collaboration with Kastelruth nostalgic pro, Otto Mauroner.

Jazz in the mountain huts, soul on the slopes and traditional tunes in the restaurants in the evenings: From 16 to 24 March 2022, musicians from all over the Alpine region will be bringing musical cheer to the Dolomites Region Seiser Alm from morning to night at the Swing on Snow festival. Bands and singers will be getting old and young, winter sports visitors and music lovers alike, into the party mood. The modern interpretation of traditional folk music with jazz, soul and pop reflect the musical culture of the Alps; listeners can swerve in time to the beats and rhythms, and weave their way downhill to the sounds of the tuba, bass, dulcimer and accordion. Concerts will be played on the slopes of the Seiser Alm in the mornings, afternoons in the huts and evenings in the villages of Kastelruth, Seis, Völs am Schlern and Tiers am Rosengarten. www.swingonsnow.com

As part of the Nature Experience programme, we will be taking a trip to a lovingly restored mill, or experiencing a full-moon hike themed around the sagas and legends of the Schlern area, while in Seis am Schlern we will be discovering the magic of dusk and learn the ageold secrets of traditional recipes. Award for the “Rauchhütte”. The Restaurant “Rauchhütte” on the Seiser Alm was delighted to receive a very special award: They were crowned the “Best Gourmet Hut” by the “Falstaff Restaurant Guide 2020 Best of Südtirol.” The Lageder family triumphed with their traditional South Tyrolean dishes served in contemporary, sophisticated style, and the exceptionally well-stocked cellar managed by their daughter Maria, a passionately committed sommelière. Helga was also awarded “Host of the Year” in the “Gault&Millau Südtriol 2021/22”. ALPE is delighted for the Lageder family, and congratulates them on their success!

Perfect conditions for top Nordic skiers Last winter, a host of elite world-class athletes came to the Seiser Alm to train for the Nordic World Ski Championships, held in Oberstdorf in February 2021. In January, the US Cross Country team took advantage of the outstanding trail conditions, including Jessie Diggins, Tour de Ski champion 2021, and Julia Kern, who posted “Seiser Alm has my heart” on facebook. At the beginning of February, the Russian Cross-Country team made their way here complete with the immensely talented Aleksander Bolshunov, leader of the overall World Cup standings and 2020/2021 Tour de Ski Champion, who was extremely impressed with the training conditions: “The Seiser Alm is a magnificent corner of the Earth, and offers optimum conditions for World Cup training,” he enthused.

Exotic skiers on the Seiser Alm At the end of January, the Norwegian National Telemark Team were our guests here in our Dolomites Region. Raphael Mahlknecht, telemark skier from Völs and South Tyrol’s only professional athlete in this discipline, brought his fellow telemarkers from Norway to the Seiser Alm to train. Per Olav Tangen, head coach of the Norwegian A-team and former coach to ski racer Aksel Lund Svindal, has often come to the Dolomites Region Seiser Alm with his team and his family. This year, Trym Nygaard Loken, currently the world’s best telemark skier, also joined them.
