Spring is upon us and Summer Camp registration is underway! If you haven’t already, it is time to make sure you take a look at what the JCC has planned for the coming summer. With many years as a camper and staff member under my belt, I have wonderful lifelong camp memories.

From Maccabi Color War and field trips to late nights and hobby hours, the JCC has tons of unique experiences to enjoy. Camp at the J has exciting activities awaiting campers each day with specialty camps including performing arts, sports, and robotics.

For the older kids, we have a unique experience coming to Miami this August.

The JCC Maccabi Games® & ArtsFest® in honor of Herschel Rosenthal will be a tremendous event August 6-11. From home hospitality to volunteering, all of the community has a role in this outreach effort for Jewish teens. If you are a Jewish teen with an affinity for sports or the arts – get involved! Over 500 Jewish families are needed to house teenagers and the efforts of 100’s of volunteers will be essential during this exciting week. Springing into fitness at the J

It’s warm out, but not quite summer yet. With a 50% chance of the El Niño effect making a return this season, that gives us in Miami an elevated peace of mind that we may have a less active hurricane season.

In other words, if this stays true then we might not even have a “scare” this season (Remember Matthew 2016).

This plus more daylight from springing forward this past March are welcome changes to the climate. At J Fitness at the Alper JCC, we’re continuing improvements that welcome change to our center—to give you an elevated peace of mind while having a more active lifestyle.

To the heroes in the eyes of our children, better known as parents, there’s no kidding around when it comes to finding something for your kids to do while you work out and have your “me time.”

Kids ages 7–12 now have a pretty cool place to hang out at and be a kid while you take some time for yourself to get a good workout session in.

Kidz Corner is a game room complete with foosball, table tennis, basketball, a pool table, and video games! Kidz Corner, or "KC," is located on campus right

next door to our Hot Yoga studio, a convenience to those attending our classes there. Yoga enthusiasts with children can also take advantage of our new Parent + Me Yoga classes on Tuesday evenings, where you and your little one can relax your minds together while learning new stretches and poses.

With over 75+ weekly classes at J Fitness, we’ve made it easier for you to tailor your workout schedules. And much like a Starbucks seasonal latte, we are now offering a monthly spotlight class that changes each month on Thursday evenings. This past March we spotlighted resistance training born in the Navy SEALs (TRX), with the following month showcasing the energetic Latin flows of Zumba. With so many trending, successful classes

in the industry, stay tuned for our next catch of the month.

Be sure to download the MindBody app! This allows you to reserve your spot for your favorite class ahead of time from the comfort of your own home, desk, or car (while safely parked and not driving, of course). If you’re on our campus and decide to take a class on the same day but forgot your phone, no sweat. The Welcome Desk now houses an iPad dedicated to MindBody where you can simply sign yourself in at the push of a couple buttons before the class of your choice begins.

Camp will be here before we know it and we are busy hiring our fabulous staff and registering new campers every day.

If you haven’t already done so, register your child for this amazing summer as space is limited and some groups are beginning to fill. Parents, be sure to turn in all your camp papers as soon as possible and make your appointment to see your child’s pediatrician right away.

Among our many wonderful staff we are also hosting two Israeli specialists in our camp. These individuals are part of a program in Israel through the JCCA and the Jewish Agency where over 1,000 Israeli young adults work at camps throughout North America. Our Schlichim have always been so creative and loved by both campers and staff.

They lead the Ruach or Jewish spirit program, help to organize the Oneg Shabbats and plan Israel Day. If you or someone you know is interested in housing our Shlichim for a period of time during the summer, if not the whole summer, please contact Elyse Molk at 305-271-9000 x263.

Be a part of Team Miami August 6–11, 2017 JCC Maccabi Games® and ArtsFest® are more than a sports competition and arts workshops. They are an experiential program encompassing the entire community. The Alper JCC is excited to host for a second time, the first being in 2001. From home hospitality to volunteering, all of the community will have a role in this outreach effort for Jewish teens.

The JCC Maccabi Games® are a week-long Olympicstyle sports competition that began in 1982. Each year, three communities host the Games, with one also hosting JCC Maccabi ArtsFest®. Active for 40+ years, Jeffrey Glasser works with film in medium and large format and pinhole cameras. He prints in a traditional “wet” darkroom on silver gelatin paper and hand-coated platinum/palladium/gold papers as well as digitally with pigment inks on cotton rag paper. He is known for his classical style and strong, simple composition and texture. Widely collected, he has shown in 60+ exhibitions and won numerous awards, including the Grand Prize in the Masters Division of Foto3.

Presented by Dade Art Educators Association (DAEA) and The Fund 4 Design & Art Education, this juried show includes artworks by MDCPS student artists. Now in its third year, the free event includes an art exhibition and silent auction of artworks, goods and services, the Amazing Sketchbook Project Awards, the Isaiah Scholarship Awards, a fashion show, musical entertainment, and refreshments.

Proceeds from the silent auction benefit talented high school seniors who plan to continue their art education.

Super Soccer Stars is a soccer development program for children. All classes teach soccer skills in a fun, noncompetitive, and educational environment. Through our age-specific curriculum, we use soccer to nurture, build self-confidence, and develop teamwork.
